STATE SCHOOL OF THE CENTURY

In December, Cal-Hi Sports named Archbishop Mitty High School the State School of the Century. This is the first time Cal-Hi Sports has given out this award. Schools received points based on the number of times they had been named Cal-Hi Sports State School of the Year for their men’s, women’s, or overall athletic programs any time between 2000 and now. “This recognition is something everyone associated with AMHS Athletics is very proud of,” said Athletic Director Brian Eagleson. “It is a testament to the accomplishments of our alumni, the caliber of the student-athletes that walk our hallways, the consistent quality of our coaching staff, and the support of the entire Monarch community.” In the past two decades, the Monarchs have won 104 CCS, 31 NorCal, and 18 state championships, plus 10 national titles. As part of announcing the award, Cal-Hi Sports recognized the school’s legendary basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball programs. In recent years, men’s golf, field hockey, and men’s water polo have also taken home sectional or state championships. Today, alumni of the school’s athletic program include Coach Sue Phillips ’86, the winningest head coach for women’s high school basketball in Northern California, and professional basketball player Aaron Gordon ’13. Other Monarchs playing sports at the highest level possible include professional baseball players Mitch Haniger ’09 and Kris Bubic ’15, softball player Keilani (Ricketts ’09) Tumanuvao, who is part of Team USA and will compete in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, two-time World Cup champion Brandi Chastain ’86, and three-time Olympic gold medalist and beach volleyball extraordinaire Kerri (Walsh ’96) Jennings.
