War on water waste! Saving water is great for the environment and your pocket! Try these top tips: Toilets use about 30% of the total water used in a home. Insert a water device (save-a-flush) in the cistern and save up to three litres per flush If you’ve got a shower, use it instead of having a bath. You can have up to five showers for the water used in just one bath. Use a shower timer to avoid being in the shower too long A dripping hot tap wastes water and energy. In one week it could waste enough water to fill a bath. Report leaking taps and get them fixed Washing machines use a lot of water so always wash a full load Wash the car with a bucket and sponge rather than a hose. If you have a water butt consider getting a hose connector Always turn off the tap when brushing your teeth Chill a jug of water in the fridge. Our ‘Get Connected’ project helps residents get online and benefit from the fantastic opportunities the internet offers - helping you find information, connect with family and friends, explore hobbies, pay bills and even a spot of shopping. We can provide the skills, motivation and access to computers you need to help you get online.

Need some help getting online? We’ve 48 Digital Champions working in our local communities to help you get online and build digital confidence and skills. They can help you in a friendly and informal environment to browse the internet and see what it has to offer. Our hugely successful DIYSOS scheme has won an award! We’ve been recognised DIYSOS team receive their award with the Learning in Families and Communities Project Award in the South East. DIYSOS teaches unemployed and low waged volunteers practical home maintenance skills, including wallpapering and floor laying. These skills are then put into practice at places like village halls and communal gardens, helping to benefit local community venues. All participants are presented with certificates of achievement, home decorating kits and vouchers to use at Brewers Decorating Store. MP pays us a visit! Nick Hurd MP with Sussex residents

Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society, visited Eastbourne in May to hear from local residents who we’ve helped into work.

Cream teas and consultation! In June, more than 75 of our older residents enjoyed cream tea at Leeford Place, Battle. We invited older residents who live in our general needs homes to come and find out more about our services. The agenda included consultation on our governance structure and a talk by our Money Matters Team. We gave out useful information on our services for older people. There was also a chance for residents to feedback on anti social behaviour in their area. And after all the hard work, everyone enjoyed delicious cakes, scones and sandwiches!

He met participants from our successful employment programmes including the ‘Get On’ project and ‘DIYSOS’. He heard how they’d gained confidence, found work, got into university and even set up their own businesses as a result of the projects. Sussex resident, Lucy Mepham, who attended the DIYSOS and the Get On training courses explained: “It was a big step for me to even sign up for the courses but I’m so glad I did. As the weeks went by, my confidence grew and the tutors helped me see how many choices I had.”

Are you interested in shaping and influencing the services we provide to residents? The Area Panel has resident vacancies and we’re looking for new people to get involved. You’d need to be available one evening every three months to attend our quarterly meetings. We’d also like members to help represent the panel at events. You can work this around your availability and find a level of involvement that’s right for you. We offer training and support for all our members. Police Sgt Dave Townsend – Independent member says: “Being a member of Hastings Area Panel is a very good way of interacting with the community. I see residents on the panel being empowered and making decisions that improve the quality of life for fellow residents.” Residents who register their interest before 12 August will be eligible to stand in the annual elections. Community chef leader training We’ll be running a six week course (one day a week) starting in September in the Hastings area. The course gives you the skills, knowledge and confidence to successfully run cookery classes, clubs and food related activities in your community. Our Coastal Space Project has recently set up a new high street marketplace delivering employment, skills and enterprise support and advice. The new service is called ‘St. Leonards Works’ and is based at 14 Silchester Road, central St. Leonards. It’s open five days a week you can make an appointment or just drop in and see them! They provide free advice and practical support, including: Careers advice CV writing and application form help Interview practice Training and apprenticeship advice Desk space with internet, printer and telephone Jobs board and job brokerage with local employers.

Residents get creative

Mosaic malarky We’ve been working with residents in our Housing for Older People (HOPS) schemes to create some fantastic mosaic artwork. So far residents from Halton Heights, Torfield Terrace, St Martins and Royal Terrace have all been involved. The project will soon be coming to Bevin Court in St Leonards. The mosaic artwork even featured at our older people’s art exhibition in Hastings. Our mosaic art tutor is Emma Frankish who’s a previous ‘Get On’ participant. Sidley fun day In June we held a brilliant event for local residents in Sidley. It was a great chance for residents to chat with staff and Area Panel members about our services and feedback on any improvements they’d like to see. There was lots of fun to be had and even a climbing wall for those brave enough to give it a go!

They are supporting the ‘teddies for tragedies’ scheme, which makes teddy bears for children who otherwise would never have one. Fantastic work! Twelve participants have been presented with awards to mark their achievements on our ‘Get On Plus’ training programme, funded by the Big Lottery. ‘Get On Plus’ provides practical training courses and workshops to help people build their confidence and skills to move into volunteering and paid work. Participant Danny Sutton has completed several courses with us. She said: “I’ve really enjoyed all the courses I’ve done. We all work really well together and all the tutors are so helpful.” ‘Get On Plus’ has five modules participants can choose from including: ‘Working in the community’ and ‘Making IT work for you’.

Affordable homes for local families in Eastbourne We’ve officially opened nine New homes for local families new homes at Appledore Close, Eastbourne and local residents have already moved in! The project resulted from a partnership with Eastbourne Borough Council, who’ve transferred three sites to us. Appledore Close was the first site to be completed, a further two schemes will finish later this year. Local resident, Mr Green has moved into Appledore Close with his partner and four children after spending six months in temporary accommodation. He said: “Our new home is fantastic, really spacious and it means a fresh start for myself and my family. It’s been a smooth process moving in and staff have kept us updated all the way.”
