An easy day on the bike for Matteo meant we could talk all things bike, from Sportful apparel to favorite races… Tosatto is such a classy bike rider, modest and understated, the ultimate professional. We can all learn something from a guy who has been a pro for 15 years, won stages in the TDF and Giro d’Italia…. Ever happy to share his knowledge it was an insightful few hours…. And a lot of fun! Spectacular photos in the mountains require going up hill. To be specific, one big hill called the Monte Grappa. It’s a mountain that’s visible from the Sportful HQ it inspires and tortures us on a daily basis… It’s tough to concentrate at work knowing there are great roads to be ridden. Steve Smith, Sportful Brand Manager decided the route should be different from the norm. In the spring of 2012, a dirt track from Cismon del Grappa, was partially paved to ensure access to the mountain, in case of forest fires. Steve likes to think… “They paved this for us!” A present of sorts to a group of cyclist’s who love the Monte Grappa. The gradient is steep from the outset, the hairpin turns offer the only respite, and it goes on and on… But the views! They’re spectacular! Blurred only by the sweat in my eyes. The climb finishes with a transition of dirt and gravel that seemingly adds to the drama of the days climb. It leaves us all smiling. Matteo throws both arms in the air. it’s a victory for all just to reach the top. Legs warmed up, the photo shoot begins.

R & D, (research and development) two simple letters make this one of the most interesting product lines in the collection. The apparel is a melting pot of ideas, material technology and manufacturing processes.

SPORTFUL R&D

Instead of asking what if? Sportful R & D brings together the ideas of tomorrow. Design facets, which will be incorporated into all product lines in the seasons to come. Heading up this exciting development is Andrea Peron, former pro and Sportful’s Race Performance Director. It’s a project that draws upon his day-to-day job of working with Team Saxo – Tinkoff and years of experience riding bikes. Imagine having the opportunity to put ideas into practice with “out of box” solutions. As a pro Andrea had a dislike for silicone grippers, to the point of removing them from jersey’s and shorts, much to the dismay of team. Andrea went onto explain… “While the silicone grippers served a purpose, they only caused irritation, when you ride you don’t want these kind of problems they only serve to distract. The removal solved the latter problem but caused both jersey and short to ride up. You’ll see with the “double step openings” on the R&D apparel, we solved both problems, it works perfectly, and you barely feel anything…” “Panel construction of the bib-short is now near perfect. Working with Stefano Sartor, Head of the Pattern Engineering office, we placed the seams and panels to work inline with your limbs. At no point are you working against the seams or panels in your pedal stroke.” The design process has seen a number of samples made… with a refinement to each. It’s not something that’s happened over night. The upshot is, Andrea now has his perfect kit and plenty of miles in his legs!

PERFORMANCE

There are typical cyclists who ride year-round (or almost) and cyclists who love the snow in the winter and the sun-drenched mountain roads in the summer. I share the spirit and feelings of a cyclist, but I belong in the second category. Motivated by passion and tradition, in the winter I cross-country ski, participating in the Master Tour circuit. But from March to October I take out my bike and put in long kilometers, which help me maintain my form for the winter. My work requires a lot of concentration, so I feel the need to carve out some time to clear my head. The bike is good therapy, because while in the winter on skinny skis I like to be competitive and race hard, in the summer I like to enjoy myself with medio fondos or training rides. I love to ride early in the morning. I love to ride long distances. I love to let my bike carry me over the familiar roads of Croce d’Aune, Faller, Lamon and Val Nevera. I suffer, I really suffer, with all the strength training I do to build up my shoulder muscles for skiing, which the bike takes away and then forces me to rebuild. I choose clothing that is comfortable above all, like the Total Comfort Bibshort. With its 18mm seat pad, I don’t suffer in the saddle even at the beginning of the season, and, since I have the build of a muscular cross-country skier rather than a typical cyclist, it gives me maximum comfort even on the longest rides. Ultimately, I really love riding. It’s my way of keeping in shape and thinking...what more could I want?

The best product ideas always come to me when I’m out on the bike. And Hot Pack is probably my favorite. It was actually the first Sportful product idea I ever had and it came to me a year and a half before I started at Sportful. In January 1999 I was in Tucson, Arizona, for a winter training camp, doing daily long solo rides to get fit for an ambitious racing schedule.

HOT PACK

Tucson usually elicits visions of unbearably hot weather, but during late January I was starting rides at 7:00 in the morning when it was -2°C and finishing six hours later with temperatures hitting +27°. I would start the rides underdressed and freezing and finish them overdressed and dehydrated. Thin, lightweight and especially compact wind protection seemed like the ideal solution: a windproof vest, windproof arm and knee warmers, booties, and gloves that could all fit in one jersey pocket. We did the first Sportful Hot Pack in Winter 2001. It weighed 100 grams, didn’t provide much water repellency and fit pretty badly. But we’ve continuously worked to improve every aspect, and this latest version feels like it’s nearing perfection. The Hot Pack Ultralight Jacket is only 50 grams of 7-denier yarns a jacket so small that it takes up less pocket space than a cell phone and a gel. Yet it’s fully windproof and water repellent. Living now at the edge of the Dolomites, I end up riding a lot in the mountains. And I always throw a Hot Pack jacket in my pocket if there’s any chance of rain or a long, cold descent. If it’s colder I’ll use a vest while riding up the mountain and then add a jacket over the top for the way down, as layering two pieces provides additional warmth. I see a lot of Hot Pack jackets on other riders, and it’s cool that an idea that popped into my head while I was shivering through downtown Tucson all those years ago is making so many people more comfortable now. The lightest most compact protection ever made for cycling. You never know when the weather can change so we set out to make the jacket that you can always take with you. It takes up only 1/3 of a pocket, weighs 51 grams, is totally wind proof and is highly water resistant. The 7 denier fabric is so fine that each jacket uses 35 km of yarn. New for 2014 is the 39 gram vest.

Because I work during the day and don’t have much free time, I often get up early in the summer to avoid the traffic and ride in silence, accompanied only by my thoughts. I’m always very careful about my clothing choice, and I wear lightweight Second Skin arm warmers and a Hot Pack. The rhythm of the pedals merges with my breathing. The still-cool air and the smells of the awakening mountain make climbing effortless. My mind feels free and rejuvenated. It almost seems like I’m waking up with the mountains around me, and I feel that pleasant sensation of balancing between dreaming and being awake, where you feel safe, protected by a friendly environment that holds you close before letting you open your eyes for good. Then gradually as you climb, and the rays of sun begin to illuminate and warm the faces of the Pale di San Martino, you wake up and discover that you’re part of an enchanted world. From there you turn your bike around and descend, ready for the spectacular day that’s just beginning, feeling like you’ve ridden in a small corner of heaven.

On the roads of the West Coast - When I come home from an adventure, I often find myself absorbed for hours trying to fix in my memory the moments and situations that characterized my experience and made it unique and striking. I like to deceive myself into believing that the more I think about it, the more everything that happened will be reinforced and permanently held in my memory. But time often confuses recollections. The strength of new experiences dominates those from the past. The shapes lose their clarity, the precision of the details is replaced by a sort of general outline, the smells lose their intensity, the lights grow dim and the sounds become progressively more muffled. The trip becomes a memory, loses its original identity and becomes an expression of what it left you: experience, inspiration and curiosity. Traveling, you move around and see new places—different, sometimes rough and often difficult to understand—but above all, you meet others. The meaning of a trip lies in these people— the people you share moments with or simply meet on the street. Men or women who don’t speak your language but who manage to communicate and make themselves understood anyway through looks, smiles and gestures. Time cannot change or cancel these people, or cause them to fade. They will remain unchanged and unchangeable in my memory, and it is to them that I owe my continuing desire to seek, discover and learn.
