TEATRO URBANO: THE LOOP

2. mapping the intervention Part 2 of an assignment on the Rotte river in Rotterdam, the first is a master plan for the Rotte from its rural beginning to its urban end. The knot is the crossing between the Boezem and the Ratte, and then the highway and then the roads, the shores ... All these limits -natural and unnatural- have created islands of settlements with different identities. In one hand, grasping the knot in its complexity allows to graft what we think this area needs, the missing line, the missing height. In the other hand, mapping the knot is trying to define each entity. And this zoning will help diagnosing the problems, to give local solutions. There can’t be one answer to several questions. The intervention is on 3 levels: the level of each “district”, then on the whole “knot” and finally in connection to the master plan.

T The design: -1. The loop: is a pedestrian, bike bridge that challenges the car road domination by going above it, then at the end slightly under (on an archeological tunnel) to end in the dancing island or just to go back along the Rotte from the other shore: it has the value of a landmark, it connects the different interventions. -2. At the end of the loop: the underground museum: while analyzing the maps of the area, the archeological value of the underground came to light. The loop path goes down and becomes a lit tunnel with display cases of history pieces dug out during the construction process. -3. The agora is a place where the mixed background district can come together, play different kinds of sports like football and skateboard. In the Agora, a world map is placed where people can pin their origins, different roots for the same tree‌ -4. The Dancing Island: powered by the move of the dancers, this kine-sensitive platform can generate enough energy for the whole neighborhood, it promotes social cohesiveness and at the same time promotes a greener energy alternative. -5. The green snake on the other side of the Rotte is a reclaimed space on the busy shores where green platforms open the view to the river while cleaning the water. -6. The Pagan Mount: an abandoned artificial hill that can be planted in prairie like fashion and adds a layer of mystery to the ‘wild’ area behind, a singularity in the Dutch landscape in general and we aim to preserve it, its uniqueness, its borderline illegality, but at the same time we aim to make it safer by making it visible.

A LANDSCAPE APPROACH TO THE REFUGEE CAMP 1. diagnosis: the camp as it is

The refugee camp has borrowed to the roman camp model its structure: 16 tents is one community, 16 community is a block, etc. following a strict orthogonal grid that does not take into account the site topography. this organisation although efficient and fast to implement ignores the social dynamics of the refugees who -coming with traumas- need a familiar layout.

The refugee camp is a graft, a satellite that is barely connected with an appendix to the city / host community, whereas cities grow differently, their “normaladditions can be in the shape of a sattelite, an extension, a regeneration or a sprawl. The starter pack for every family: containing a plastic tent, a cloth, basic cooking ustensils, a lamp, a plaid, a jerry can, a fan and a gas cooker.

MASTER THESIS PROJECT 2. the site: the pathological flows

On the Austrian Hungarian border, thousands of refugees were blocked, unable to go further. On this very symbolic border that witnessed the first breach in the iron wall, refugees are faced with the inconsistencies of the European policies on borders and refugees hosting. Austria the richest side seems unattainable with the new barbed fences, on the ground, there is no physical border not even natural ones, apart from a small stretch of the Danube river. In fact, the countries were one at different milestones of their shared history. Right now, the Hungarian border cities are dorm cities, decaying with an aging population and deserted villages. The Austrian side has better economic opportunities but still needs the neighboring country mainly for agricultural produce and medical tourism. Both are faced with the challenge of a growing attraction ot bigger cities. However, the border is also part of a European plan for development: CENTROPE aiming to strengthen the transport network in this strategic hub and possibly have a better coordination in ecological measures and educational programs. A lot of possibilities and yet‌

A LANDSCAPE APPROACH TO THE REFUGEE CAMP 1. joint strategy: for the camp INTEGRATION OR MOBILITY: Activating mobility : the right to the Civitas or the right to return

PRODUCTION: Clean agriculture: permaculture Fitting into the CENTROPE plan: developing the SME entrepreneurship initiative

ACCLIMATION: Integration by education and trainings / Adapting to an environmental friendly setting Skill based assignment in the network of camps ->The right to the landscape

DISCOVERY: Choosing the right site: a network of mini -camps / Optimizing existing grey and blue network Assigning identity to the sectors with colours and landmarks

M

MASTER THESIS PROJECT 2. joint strategy: for the region BINDING: Improving industrial and housing infrastructure in Hungary /Permaculture / Lively city centres

BONDING: Arranging a forum and an emporium between the city and the camp

BRIDGING: Regional ecological connections / Revive old functions and tissues Sharing schools, hospitals, etc.

PREPPING: More wind farms Creating platforms of production / rehabilitating the decaying

A LANDSCAPE APPROACH TO THE REFUGEE CAMP 1. Mosonmagyarovar: the camp as a revival landscape

On the palimpsest of the Danube meandrings, a new agricultural landscape is reactivated through the camp, making it productive, autonomous and connected to the region through commercial exchange, while giving more room to the water. the region is therefore better protected against flooding.

M

MASTER THESIS PROJECT 2. from the contextual design to replicability

A zoom-in: with a more flexibble grid that mimics the surroundings and the vernacular agriculural patterns, new possibilities emerge, houses around patios create semi privacy that is safer for kids, alongside agricultural lands, planted courtyards provide produce for families. on the edge of the camp, goods are exchanged with locals.

Updating the UNHCR guidebook with directives making the emergency response more contextual and sustainable.
