MAHLER

BRAHMS Variations on a Theme by Haydn SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished”

Fans of Gustav Mahler will rejoice in his fifth symphony – the heroic opening fanfare, boisterous scherzo and exuberant finale. Unique to this evening is the poignant lyricism of the famous adagietto, the heart of the work and one of the most unbearably beautiful moments in all of classical music. We pair it with a concerto described as “the heart’s jewel” of the violin – Mendelssohn’s Concerto in E Minor.

Piano Concerto No. 2

Superstar and TSO audience favorite Kirill Gerstein brings not one, but two piano concerti in late February. Brahms greatly admired and once called Schubert a “child of the gods,” so we pair this Brahms Project with the evocative “Unfinished” Symphony.
