The Tale Solo Project Graduation Thesis Advisor Julia Czerniak Yazd & Tehran, Iran

This thesis investigates the potential of narrative storytelling to generate a design through speculation and depiction of the protagonist’s spatial experience. This story depicts scenes from the imagination of a girl on her journey from Yazd to Tehran, Iran. *This Project submitted to Fairy Tale Story Competition To read the story on Inkitt click on the link

Yazd

Yazd, Fahadan Neighborhood

Yazd, Lari House

The city of Yazd, is located in the central part of Iran. Yazd is a historic city founded in 4th century AD. The city is among the oldest and the biggest clay cities in the world. The atmospheric spaces that were created by architecture such as mosques, interior spaces with ornaments and window crafting make the space valuable regarding being memorials. The old city has architecture that has remained since 4th century and is representative of the age of the city. The old city of Yazd is considered as one the sties in this thesis because of historic and traditional notion of Iranian architecture. Lari house in Fahadan neighborhood is considered as the first site. The fiction begins with the protagonist’s character in the house and she decide to leave the house after 25 years living there. The protagonist describes the moments and experiences that she has in historic places or architectural features that created special atmosphere/feelings for her.

Tehran - Ekbatan Apartments

Tehran-Ekbatan Apartments Tehran, is the second city where the protagonist lives. In 1970s West of Tehran became the center of modern development and new, modernist buildings such as monument, airport, residential complexes were raised. Ekbatan residential apartments, as the first place where the protagonist lives, could be considered as the most important and the most influential modern mass residential project. It hosts around 40.000 people with accessibility to transportation and infrastructural requirements such as schools and shopping center that somewhat makes the place independent form the city. Ekbatan is considered in the story as the first neighborhood that the protagonist lives in when she moves to Tehran as a pose to experience the modernity.

Exisiting Market

Building Block

As the final product in this thesis, I designed an elevated park on top of the Phase 1 market that built in the 1970s, in response to lack of sociable place and improving social and architectural qualities. The concept of design is to transform the experience of the protagonist in the city of Yazd, bring it to Ekbatan and create a picturesque moment that simulates the experience of “Home. I used the experience of alleyways to create a canopy over the public park. The created space has the experience of Yazd, such as meandering, having the feeling of materiality, shading and etc.

Chapter I: This chapter begins in “home. Talks about Lari House in Yazd where the imaginary protagonist grow for 2526 years and her character shapes based in the place. This Chapter describes how the characteristics of the house can shape the understanding of the space and influence the characteristics of the protagonist. The concept of this house talks about the privacy, scenery, passive architecture .

Chapter III: The third chapter describes the moment the protagonist move to Tehran, a modern metropolitan and faces Ekbatan, her new place to live. This chapter describes the issues, challenges, and contradiction she experiences when she moves to Tehran.

Chapter II: The second chapter describes Fahadan neighborhood where is lari house is placed. The neighborhood that the protagonist grows up. This chapter focuses on ideas such as meandering, climate, sequential view spaces and creating sequential space and human scale.

Chapter IV: Chapter four, describes the imaginary world, that the protagonist dreams about in Ekbatan, an imaginary elevated park, that is that the idea of the Fahadan neighborhood (the concept of chapter 2). she dreams about things she missed in her hometown such as meandering, shades, human scale.

Chapter V: Chapter five has the idea of home. She imagined the place in response to modern buildings of Ekbatan which are out of human scale so that she dreams of a place that reminds her of her home with the ideas of scenery views of materiality and privacy.

Modular Apartment In Collaboration with Gary Thurston

Comprehensive Studio Professors David Shanks and Bess Krietmeyer Brooklyn, NY

Urban Oblique

As Brooklyn grows fast, and changes shape, especially horizontally, the requirement of place to live which is affordable, easy and quick to construct is tangible. The project considered as modular apartment project which meets the mentioned requirements. The site is seen at the intersection of Classon and Willoughby Avenue in Brooklyn. In this topic in addition to designing of the building, other factors such as constructional aspects, HVAC systems, structural, environmental analysis and fire codes are considered. The concept of the design is to consider modules in a way that their different formations shape different square footage as well as being structural.

Tehran Theater Hall Undergraduate Thesis Supervisor Dr.Farsi Tehran, Iran

Considering the long history of traditional performing art in Iran, on one hand and importing western performing art as a part of modernization in the 19th century, caused this tradition to became less important to western style. In recent years. This concept has been tried to promote the place and importance of the traditional performing art. This important of reviving traditions has been considered for years especially in Tehran, as the Capital of the country that has both modern and traditional identity. In this Thesis, I integrate Iranian performing art with the modern theater by keeping traditional characteristics and feelings. The result is a theater hall that has both conventional and modern[western] performing arts. The site is in Harft-Tir area which is one of the crowdest areas that includes both commercial and residential areas.

Capula Hall Solo Project

Slums of Utopia Professor Lawrence Chua Jerusalem, Isreal

Premise, My project was to design a new monument in order to present the ‚new Jerusalem.› The monument depicts the city as a united one city, encourage the citizens of each side hopeful to a united future and define itself as the symbol of Jerusalem by montaging the new with the old symbol in order to have the legacy of the past. In designing Copula Hall in The City and The City, it functions as a checkpoint between the two cities. The concept of the design is to make the checkpoint monumental as well as to facilitate the traffic from Berszel and Ul Qoma. The design does not only function as a checkpoint but also as the monument. In addition people and traffic can pass through as well as working as the monument of the city for both Berszel and Ul Qoma.

Project Description, The concept is to design a monument that is the representative of the united Jerusalem with the same values for both of the population, even though both populations ignore each other but Cupola Hall is the only one that has the same value for both populations, and they have take the advantage of the same benefits. On the other hand, it should have the characteristics of Cupola Hall in the book. The environment of story has somehow eastern European/ Western Asian connotations. Such as in Berszel is economically has a lower rate than Ul Qoma. In my opinion, the book and its addresses are more similar to Ex-Yugoslavian/Ex-Ottoman Empire countries. In addition to its monumentality, it also facilitates the traffic and works as a checkpoint between Palestinian and Israelian part.

As a result I considered Ilirska Bistrica in Slovenia as a moncument in a place that was historically was some part of Ex-Yugoslavian/Ex-Ottoman as precedent. So I collaged Dome of the Rock›s plaza with the designed monument as a pose to present the new United monument that is united for both sides with the same values such as not being ignored by the other side. Also, Ilirska Bistrica, as precedent is capable of going through so cars can go passing through. In this case, monument becomes a neutral zone for citizens of both sides they also are able to walk through the other side and connecting Islamic Quarter neighborhood to Armenian Quarter neighborhood. I designed the monument and checkpoints a way to merge the crosshatch areas into one united road. In fact, roads from Palestine and Israel merge into one road and able to enter the checkpoint, and going the other side of the old city.

Music Pavilion, Tehran Visitic Critic Studio Professors Katherine Hogan, Vincent Petrarca Tehran, Iran

The music pavilion is in a public park and was considered as a short studio project on a small scale. The project began with this question “ How do you spend your spare time?” which one the things I do, I listen to music. In the next step, I transformed the content of the question in the service of public and I reframe the question as “How a spare time can integrate into public architecture?” As a result, the designed building is considered as a music pavilion in a public park.
