Almost a decade before be completion of the mosque in 2019, a small scale surau, for approximately200 person, was built on the same 3 acre reserve. The modest and humble design of the surau with wide overhangs and free-standing fair faced brick walls, equipped with a naturally ventilated prayer hall landed the architect not only a national award buat also a bigger commssion.

One would not immediately recognise Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman as a religious building, for without its signage, it could be a commercial project. And yet, perhap not-for while the mosque is undeniably beyond a basic model of a mosque, it still features one of the most elementary components in islamic architecture, especially those in warmer climates, a mashrabiya screen.

Throughout the years, a lot of studies were made to Hence, a wider street with parking on each side, and examine problems associated with the implementa- a 5ft pathway separating the street from the lot is tion of affordable housing. In terms of design aspect, proposed with hope to decrease individualistic value it focuses too much on reducing construction cost by replacing personal carporch with low fencing and meeting basic housing need without really trying private garden within lot. to be innovative and improvising the lifestyle quality. One might question the safety and security aspect of Spaces that encourage social interactions should be this design. Architecture is about creating a better celebrated in order to create stronger community place to live, work and play and making people feel bond within a neighbourhood. Common spaces such good in their surroundings. It shouldn’t be restricted as the streets and pathways are one of the places because of security factors. Safety and security meawhere people would interact with each other. sures can be achieved through surveillance systems, community patrol, neighbourhood watch etc.

Unkept back lanes have always been a huge drawback of any residential or commercial developments. From unsightly view to giving access to burglary, it never really gave any benefits other than providing ventilation. A simple solution to avoid this is by eliminating back lanes, orientating building back-toback and replacing rear openings with skylight. Apart from preventing illegal back extension, it is also proven that more units can be acquired by replacing single storey 22x55 lot with double storey 22x35 as explained in the diagram in the poster.

URBAN HYDBRID

Design Competition Rumah Mampu Milik Johor 2014 Top 5-Honorable Mention Idea/Conceptual Ar. Hj Razin Design/Presentation/Project Managing by Max & team

In order to achieve government aims to provide adequate and decent housing for all; something needs to be done especially at the implementation level. Special attention must be given to affordable housing since majority of this country population are in this category. Architects are continually inventing new solutions to confront the challenges of maximum unit count paired with minimum budget, all the while incorporating architecture's latest technologies and trends into the designs. Design, of course, can't solve it all. Among some of the issues related to affordable housing apart from the clear miss-match between the supply and demand is the lack of consideration on the location of affordable housing in Malaysia. Affordable housing is intended for people with low and middle range incomes or the so called working-class to be able to own a house.

54 | r e - s u m e ’

However, these housing are usually located in the country side, far away from their working place which is in the city. Contrary to the common believe whereby city is only for the rich and famous; the demand for affordable housing are actually more imminent in the urban area. The scheme suggest a solution to satisfy the immediate need of urban occupant by using existing available land within urban area to build these affordable housing. Available land does not necessarily mean it is vacant. It could be a land with public building such as market place, multipurpose hall, public library, transportation terminal or even a less patronized food court. Sharing the land can be as much effective as owning it individually through a well thought design. A new building typology is introduced by creating a hybrid between affordable housing and existing building without losing initial land function which is for the public.

BOX HOUSE Batu Pahat, Johor 2017

Design And Built Design/Presentation/Project Managing/ by Max & team

62 | r e - s u m e ’

BOX HOUSE is a house created with the purpose of living closer to nature, temporarily away from the noisy, smoggy city. The owner chose Ayer Hitam land about 40km away from Batu Pahat as a place to return after busy working days. More importantly, the homeowner always wants to see nature anytime, anywhere while living in the house. Therefore, to meet the above demand,

LrvaStudio has arranged an alternating garden throughout the length of the house to create the effect of welcoming sunlight, wind and trees. With an area not too large, the width iand the length of the two sides is have divided the space flexibly: a)Garden front yard, parking lot. b)The outside courtyard creates a green area in the house, this space is also a place to receive and circulate air into the front and back yard.

Kempas, Johor 2018

Design And Built Design/Presentation/Project Managing/ by Max & team

How can architecture respond to such a site?; As a response, I saw the roof as is an important contextual element within the area and develop it as a concept. In this quiet residential area, there are narrow streets with a mix of old and new houses, in which their appearance and roof forms are diverse. As an approach to the context, I selected an appropriate roof for both the program and the site and made a study.

As a result, I decided to choose simple sloped roof with a ridge in a diagonal line. The roof form was eventually approved as it demonstrated that despite the house’s scale, it considered the urban context.

It is possible to live in this central space while feeling all the signs of family life with the blind spots made by floor slabs with different levels, kitchen and stairs.

This simple framework, which allows the space The house is for a family of 4 people. The main to stand out, details were planned minutely spaces are open to form a single space and providing the house with consistency and coact as the hub of second floor where the family herence to the design. spends most of their time. r e - s u m e ’ | 67
