Bat Yam - City edge, Way of living Thesis project | Created in: Bezalel Academy of Art and Design
The project offers a new urban reading, to the Bat Yam industrial area. The references: Massive changes that the Industrial area will undergo throw, including Metropolitan traffic network of light rail and change in uses, from low tech to high tech and entertainment. In addition, the project relies on the future tenants, that offer new ways of living to Bat Yam. The planning supports the idea, by creating a structure that combines mixed uses, in a building and the building block. This system creates horizontal and vertical relationships, which combine public and private passages and areas. These combinations are the ones that allow the tenants, to have that wanted way of living. In fact, the social network and lifestyle, are the one that outline the structural system. This design, with its city center character, creates a reaction at the surrounding living environment, in the existing neighborhoods at the edge of town. That reaction leads to thickening of the main street, and offers a new neighboring unit to Bat Yam. Living on Both sides of the street. Folding the street event to the depth of the block, creates the horizontal connections, thus allowing the network to be consist, multidimensional multi-systemic.

The exercise: Planning a proper building. Referring to issues such as positioning, movement, relations between volumes and facade. Planning in a given ground allocation and dealing with a given program. Achieving a high-quality set of drawings as part of the planning process.
My interpretation: My reading of the given exercise, was a mixed uses building for various social and communal activities. Planning at the heart of Jerusalem, by nature defined the plan of the building. Linkage to a sealed facade of an existing building on one hand, and making room for the street floor on the other. This spirit had led me to choose the rectangle and the ellipse, as the generic morphology of the building. The most interesting part of the building, which host the movement element, emphasize the existing tension between the two shapes and act as the building generator.
