ABOUT US SPA I NEW DELHI The School of Planning and Architecture had a modest beginning in 1941 as a Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic. It was later affiliated to the University of Delhi and integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning. On integration, the School was renamed as School of Planning and Architecture in 1959. Recognizing the specialized nature of the fields in which the School had attained eminence, in 1979, the Government of India, through the then Ministry of Education and Culture, conferred on the School of Planning and Architecture the status of “Deemed to be a University”. With this new status, the School had broadened its horizon by introducing new academic and extension programs and promoting research and consultancy activities. It was recognized as “An Institute of National Importance under an Act of Parliament” in 2015. Equipped with the best faculty personnel and well-crafted study programs , fused with field training and cross-cultural sophistication , the school has emerged as a brand name for the best learning in the fields architecture , design , planning and project management
MBEM
The Department of Building Engineering and Management was founded in August 1979. Always a step ahead , SPA became the very first school to offer a dedicated core course in Construction and project management in India, presently, MBEM is a two year full time Master’s program formulated to create Industry ready project management professionals. The course is devised to simplify the concepts of three core branches of project management, Real estate management and Finance management, focusing on Human resource management, Quality management, Contract management and Building structures and services. Research assignments and dissertations are aimed at developing analytical abilities of students to become competent professionals . Building Engineering and Management integrates the engineering aspects and management practices for building projects and it focuses on grooming efficient professionals who can accomplish complex building projects by coordinating with specialized building consultants, through all stages of construction, right from inception to completion.

School of planning and Architecture is one of the premier institutes reflecting the manifold shades of learning and co-curricular activities. Our college is striving hard towards the goal of providing innovative and quality education with high standards to achieve academic excellence. The motto of our de-partment is to provide quality education with high standards to face the challenges in life by providing many value added courses to enhance their career prospects. The excellent infrastructure, highly experienced teaching faculty along with training and placement cell ensures a bright future for its students. Over the past 38 years our students have managed to excel in the industry and this makes the recruiters to offer our students diverse and key roles in their organizations. The batch of 2020 brings to-gether a mix of academic and professional back-grounds. Thus, we are confident that our students will emerge as assets not only to this institution but to the organization they belong to and also to the country at large.

I am pleased to introduce the batch of 2018-2020, of Masters in Building Engineering and Management. Upon completion of this two year specialized full time course, the competent students selected from all over the country grow into the industry befitting professionals. It really is an exciting time to be in the department head as we continue to strive ahead while holding on to a 38 year old tradition of expertise. With the changing paradigms of the construction project management industry ,the course content has evolved as well over the years. Our department has been recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in research and innovation. In December 2016, research associates at BEM department developed and successfully launched the B-Fire application. B-Fire is a building Fire Risk Evaluation system which evaluates the building parameters on the basis of fire prevention protection and life safety. In August 2017, SPA Delhi hosted a GIAN workshop on BIM with Prof. Henry Abanda from Oxford Brokes university. U.K. in summer 2018, BEM department in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University, U.K. participated in a student exchange program as well. With a highly experienced and qualified faculty pool blended with industry expert talks, workhops and live project participation produces a rich academic and field exposure for the students. With immense pride, I see the students carve out a distinguished identity for them and become the torchbearers not only in India but globally as well. The motivated and self driven students of this institute are aptly suited to meet all the unique expectations of every firm in the construction industry.

The key notion behind all of the activities taken up by the students is aimed at their holistic overall development to excel not only in technical and managerial aspects, but also in interpersonal skills, a vital factor to become a good project manager. BEYOND THE CURRICULUM As we believe in creating all-rounders we also indulge our student in other departments like Environmental planning. Transport planning, Real estate and housing , Disaster management and Urban planning so that they get a wide spectrum of knowledge along with full understanding of the contemporary industry demands. ANALYTICAL RESERACH Research based study is encouraged through several research papers, master thesis, during the course which not only helps to build their analytical thinking but also encourages students to think across varying spectrum of the subjects and to analyse their findings by applying the knowledge acquired throughout the course and communicate their ideas rationally and systematically.
PROFICIENCY IN SOFTWARE Students are well versed in MS Office applicantions (Excel., Power point, Word), Project Management software (Primavera, MS Project, etc.) archietctural Softwares (AutoCAD, Sketch-up, 3Ds Max), presentation and editing tools (Photoshop, Illustrator) and engineering softwares (Stadd pro, ETABS, SAP 2000).

CURRICULUM OUTLINE
APPROACH The course of MBEM was conceived with a vision of galvanizing the ever-squabbling siblings. Architecture and Construction Management. The curriculum encompasses a diverse array of subjects from the fields of architecture, civil engineering ,project management and human re-source management. Guidance from some of the best professionals and academicians hones the students into motivated and well-groomed individuals, at the threshold of their careers as project managers . RESEARCH ORIENTED STUDY MBEM lays emphasis on research projects, in the form of two seminars and one final semester thesis. It encourages the student to comprehensive studies related to the subject and it environs through extensive literature and market reference , thus widening their scope of knowl-edge and exposure. The completed work, which is a treasure trove in the MBEM class room library, is the contribution of the students to their subject and industry. INDUSTRY ORIENTED PEDAGOGY With the aim of adhering to the lofty standards of the industry, MBEM has incorporated guest lectures, special lectures, workshops and site visits. The department is fortunate to have been graced by some of the most respected professionals that the industry has to offer. The summer internship undertaken by the students after the completion of the first year of studies gives them invaluable insight before heading into the industry.
