Hello & Namaskar Toastmasters, It all started sometime during February 2018 when I felt an urge to improve & sharpen my Hindi public speaking skills and was seeking a suitable platform of like-minded individuals. And lo behold…! It was as if my prayers were answered and I stepped into the most amazing meeting at Bollywood Toastmasters Club. The joyful participants, the energy and the level of Hindi language used during the meeting was so enchanting that I had made my decision to join the club even before the meeting ended. Within a few months of active participation in speeches and the opportunity to play a Poetry Master role during the Anniversary meeting of the club, got me into lime light. I was offered a position in the Executive Committee as VP Public Relations – that too of the only Hindi & English (Bilingual) Toastmasters club in UAE. It was a proud moment and oh boy what a wonderful journey it has been over the past 5 months at Bollywood Toastmasters Club. The Ex-com members have been a fantastic team with the likes of inspiring TM Vinod Mettammel and dynamic TM Amjad Ali leading from the front. They have been co-operative and have guided me at each step thus far. I am enjoying being the inter-face between the club and the community and am learning many aspects of the club’s activities. One of the privileges as VP Public Relations is the opportunity to release the club’s Newsletter. I am pleased to invite you to read our club’s first newsletter for the Toastmaster year 2018-19. I am sure you will enjoy the wonderful, inspiring and interesting articles written by members including some from our senior Toastmasters. PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Bollywood Toastmasters Club is one of the most charming thing of my Toastmasters journey. I joined this club during it’s early days and the reason to become a part of Bollywood TMC was it’s unique meetings and bilingual status where everyone could take part and speak their heart out without having fear of a language barrier. It’s been almost one year with Bollywood TMC and it feels like having a -childhood relationship with it. The members have been ever ready to provide support to the best of their abilities. Meetings are beautifully organized in which members are the key, members are the highlight and members are the heroes. I feel privileged to serve as President since 1st January 2018 and the journey so far has been immaculate which consists of so many laurels, awards and achievement for the club and myself. The support from the Toastmasters fraternity in general and Bollywood TMC in particular has been just amazing. Bollywood TMC was declared as President Distinguished Club in it’s very first year which is a huge achievement in its own way. We achieved 9/10 points with the support of all members. Kudos to all the members. If you are passionate about speaking and leading and have fear of language quality then this is the platform where you can speak in your Hindi and inspire, persuade and move people for their purpose. Come join us in our meetings as a guest and experience the vibrancy and uniqueness then take a decision if it’s for you….!! Bollywood TMC rocks because we have fun, we enjoy and we learn.

TM Ramesh Babu Menon ALB-ACS Division-B Director | District 105 Message from Division “B” Director “There is a close relationship between the language and the culture of a community - they are inextricably related, so that one cannot understand or appreciate the one without a good knowledge of the other” - Frances Hesselbein The need to communicate triggers both, the occurrence and the development of a language and this need arises and becomes stronger and stronger when one has someone else to communicate with. Bollywood Toastmasters is formed by keeping in view of spreading the art of leadership and communication skills being shared and grew among the vast majority of Hindi speaking communities around Dubai. It takes courage for a leader to identify and confront self-imposed barriers, to put in place the personal strategies required to unleash the energy, innovation, and commitment to self-development. TM Vinod Mettammel, the pioneer in forming language clubs in UAE toastmaster fraternity, has time and again proved his leadership service by forming Bollywood and TAEGUS bilingual clubs - the first Hindi & Malyalam language clubs respectively, in the UAE Toastmaster fraternity. He is an encouragement to many toastmasters to think out of the box and serve with a positive attitude for betterment of individuals and the community as a whole. The Bollywood Toastmasters club meetings that I have attend so far have been a unique experience - each one of them fun filled with interludes of enthralling learning & enjoyment. Leadership is not a basket of tricks or strategies or skills that you pull out. Leadership begins with the quality of the person. Bollywood Toastmasters club is fortunate to have a good set of leaders to lead and make all members equally participative to help grow individually within the Bollywood tag frame. They have proved that the leadership is not about glorious crowning acts - leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine. I am hopeful that the current Ex-com, led by TM Amjad Ali will add another fantastic chapter of successful achievements during their 2nd year in 2018-19 as well. The great potential in leadership and members will see the club through to achieve 10 DCP points without any major obstacle soonest. I am confident that Bollywood Toastmasters Club will grow from strength to strength and I wish this club more accolades and recognitions in the years to come. May Bollywood Toastmasters Club rise as one of the greatest clubs in the Area, Division and District 105 arena.

Dear Members of Bollywood Toastmasters Club, It was Brian Tracy, the American –Canadian Self-Development author and public speaker who said that, “Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field” Learning and Success indeed are two peas in a pod. In Toastmasters, Learning is taken to a whole new dimension. Learning is experienced through enjoyment and having fun, so the probability of getting bored as we learn and grow is zero.When I think of a FUN Toastmaster Club Meeting, I think of Bollywood TM Club meetings. The energy, the gaiety is infectious and the warmth and the support that a guest and member receives is phenomenal. When I had visited Bollywood TM Club some months back, I was impressed by the passion of the members to promote the Club as a bilingual club. Project Speeches and Evaluation Speeches were presented with aplomb and confidence in both Hindi and English. Wherever we provide communication and leadership opportunities to people along with respect and motivation, there will undoubtedly be positive results. The profound wisdom behind the Toastmasters tagline, “Where Leaders Are Made” is reflected in the growth of any individual fortunate enough to become a Toastmaster. As the first Hindi speaking TM Club in the U.A.E, Bollywood TM Club is an example of what happens when learning takes place through encouragement and inspiration, in an entertaining atmosphere. The benefits of being a member in a bilingual club are worth noting. Apart from the obvious advantage it offers us to communicate effectively in another language other than our own, being a bilingual speaker has benefits as far as professional and personal growth is concerned. Since communication is crucial in work environment, bilingualism is particularly revered in international organizations. It also paves us a fantastic opportunity to know people from different cultures and societies. Perhaps most importantly, it encourages us to think more like a global citizen – be more tolerant and respectful towards others. Keep continuing to have the unique identity you have and soar high to make your dreams come true. Why not a Language Toastmasters Club? When I was serving the organization in the capacity of an Area Director, this thought came to my mind, Why not a language Toastmasters Club? I shared this with few of my close friends in Toastmasters. Few of them supported me, few of them encouraged me and few others even ridiculed me. The reason for those who has ridiculed me was, people are coming in ‘Toastmasters to improve their English communication and not for anything else’. Those who encouraged me has a valid reason to extend this magical platform regardless of language, gender, territory and any other kind of boundaries.

In reality, there was a very strong need of Language Toastmasters club in the community. When we decided to go for that many people supported me and fuel up the thought with more ideas. That leads to the birth of new language Toastmaster clubs in UAE in the year 2016, TAEGUS Toastmasters & Bollywood Toastmasters Club. Both the clubs became and listed among few of the best clubs in UAE within a short span of time. When TAEGUS became the Debate Champion in Division-B during the first year of its inception. Bollywood became the President Distinguished Club by attaining 9 out of 10 points in the first year of its operation. There was lot of challenges in this journey, initially to retain the membership was an issue, later finding the set of people to lead the club has become a challenge. But both the clubs were withstand against all the odds and now becoming the healthy clubs in UAE. Bollywood has a very unique fabric as most of the members are from non-Hindi speaking area and still the club became one of the best bilingual clubs in UAE. It is surprisingly true that language Toastmasters club has more fun-filled environment than the English speaking Toastmasters club due to the wide opportunity of expressing the ideas in their own vernacular language. When we are improving in our mother tongue, the ability of reasoning and expressing is also getting improved which helps to enhance our communication in any language of our choice. In my opinion, while we are thinking of Toastmastering, we need not bother much about whether we need to join in an English Toastmasters Club or a Bilingual club. The reason is; language is just a vehicle to transport your idea from one place to another, similarly while in communication, we are transferring our idea from one brain to another. Toastmasters make this process effective in an effortless manner. The best time to learn a language is during our teenage, considering this aspect into account, we are now in the process of starting a trilingual Gavel Club for the kids in the age bracket of 10 to 18 years. 30-40 numbers of children are already shown keen interest to be the part of this newly forming club. Once it is realized, it is going to be the first Trilingual Gavel Club in UAE. Staying away from home and being an ‘introvert to begin with and extrovert once I know you’ kind of person, I did not really have a social circle in Dubai. My social circle was practically limited to my office colleagues and 1-2 friends from earlier days and I hardly made any new friends or social circle since I came to Dubai in March 2016. July 2017 - I attended my first ever Toastmasters meeting in my company. Attempted the table topic ‘Lean is Mean’ and won the Best Table Topics Speaker of the meeting. I was hooked. Being a Change Management Consultant for over 12 years and interacting with and presenting to all levels of the organization from the CXO to the Receptionist; making presentations or public speaking was never a problem. What I realized after attending the Toastmasters meeting is that I never really got feedback for my public speaking or presentations. That was sorely missing and hence there was no assessment (other than some little self-assessment) which could help me improve. With the structured approach to speeches and evaluations, I could finally improve my game at speaking in front of an audience and actually learn to make it better. I joined the Landmark Toastmasters (corporate) club immediately. Then I came to know there were many others that I could attend a guest, now that I was a registered Toastmasters. I started exploring other clubs. Won the Best Table Topics Speaker at quite a few clubs in those days and enjoyed every bit of it. Attending the bilingual Hindi-English Bollywood Toastmasters made me realize that I was talking in Hinglish rather than Hindi most of the times. With the purpose to improve that, I joined Bollywood too. And of course, the other deciding factor was that it was the most fun Toastmasters club I had come across. Who said learning could not be fun. With 2 clubs and exposure to the various Division level events, like DTM Showcase, being organized by the Division leadership teams, the Debate contest, the Tall Tales Contest and the Annual Contests – I tried to attend as many events as possible as a spectator to learn by observation and even engage as role player to learn by doing. With over 60 Toastmaster related meetings of various clubs, events, contests etc attended over the last 9 months of my Toastmasters journey, I now have a social network of literally 100s of Toastmasters. The recognition, support and warmth that I have received from this community is unprecedented for me, its like one big family. This is my new social network, away from home. And I am constantly improving myself and learning from the best people around. I completed my CL recently and on track to achieve CC and ALB in next couple of months. Once these are achieved, I will refocus on Pathways which promises to be the brave new world of Toastmasters with razor sharp focus on ‘what you want to achieve out of Toastmasters’ rather than a generic program on leadership and public speaking development. All with the love, support, help, encouragement of my new social network.

10 Projects at a time? Could you give us more details? What are the electives you have chosen? As you know there are many elective projects in pathways and I chose all those electives that would help me in my work in future such as – building social media presence, create a podcast, managing a difficult audience, prepare to speak professionally, write a compelling blog, active listening. Prepare for an interview, inspire your audience and high-performance leadership. All the above projects do take time. But for a few of the projects I had already begun preparations even before Pathways was launched. Take for instance the elective, ‘writing a blog’, my website was ready even before Pathways was launched in this region. I started reading Pathways’ materials quite early.

Interview We see him often on the pages of district 105, Not just putting up meeting invites and highlights once they are done, But routinely completing his paths. He is a member of many clubs and has attended a record number of 400 meetings till date. He has finished 4 paths till Date. He says with toastmasters he is a changed man now. Let’s hear it from him on what it takes to finish projects on a fast track mode. What inspired you to join this program? I have been working in the adverting field for the last 18 years and have been running a few businesses in UAE and some other counties. I needed the skills to speak in front of huge crowds. In June 2017 I began a search to improve my communication and public speaking skills. It was then that I found the toastmasters website. I did some study and spoke to different toastmasters club. I visited about 17 different club; my first club meeting was on 30th June 2017 I chose friend’s of yoga toastmasters club as my first club because they meet every Friday and that helped me to get more stage time. You are the first in this region to have finished 4 paths? That was quick? I study everyday something about toastmasters projects. It’s not just pathways, I finished all my 40 speeches under the traditional program in just 5 moths after becoming a member.
What was your high-performance leadership project about? My high-performance leadership project was about branding 337 shop across UAE for one of my clients. The framework provided by toastmasters, helped me in completing the project much sooner and in a more profitable manner. nything special we need to bear in mind while choosing paths? If more then one path suits your requirement, focus on the compulsory project that are comparatively easy to finish. In electives you a variety to choose from. I strongly recommend conducting education sessions every 3 months in clubs for new members. What is next on your agenda now? I have completed four paths- presentation mastery, Effective coaching, Visionary communication and Leadership Development. I have already achieved 5 triple crown awards with the help of 17 speeches in different Toastmasters clubs in other countries, 1 speech in Pakistan, 3 speeches in Canada and 3 speeches in United states. This has boosted my confidence tremendously. My plan is to finish 8 paths at least in this term 2018-2019. Sounds grandiose but why not: Why limit ourselves? I dream big now. That’s the big change in my life! (Toastmasters International are you listening…8 Paths in one year!) If I tell you that I started speaking English well only after I joined toastmasters, it won’t be a lie; now I can speak in front of an audience of any size, nationality of culture with reasonable confidence. Someday I hope to speak to United nation as part of “Border Free World”, or work as our international President in a few years from now.
How? Each project requires at least a months preparation. I work on almost 10 project at a time This enabled me to finish faster.
Could you tell us something about the mentoring you received while completing these paths?
I don’t really speak about my work in speeches, most of my projects are about people who inspire me. Luckily, I have so many ready topics to speak on because every person you meet is a story and has story. It’s just a matter of putting it together for an audience.
Mentoring is important for every human being. That’s why Toastmasters has envisioned mentoring in this program. I walked the extra mile to discuss projects with mentors form recommend this to all toastmasters. But I strongly believe that self belief is required to achieve every goal of yours. “You live once with Toastmasters, Toastmasters will live with you forever.” - Amjad Ali
