WINGS OF MAGIC Toastmasters Club Dubai

We are delighted to welcome you to the second edition of newsletter of our grown up, magical ‘WINGS OF MAGIC TOASTMASTERS CLUB’ in Dubai, known as WOM as well. As always your appreciation echoes in our mind while putting our candid efforts to showcase the dazzling journey WOM has had so far aptly reflected in its achievement of so many distinguished awards & recognitions including toastmasters from the club reaching district level in many championships. A Toastmaster is a reflection that exhibits a panorama of prowess. There is a world to be known about it apart from the fact that we at WOM are engaged in promoting leadership and public speaking along with the personality. We in our club believe in 4 important factors that make us disparate from the mundane outside, known as 3 C's and they are:

EDITORIAL DESK

i) Confidence: We aim at invigorating the conviction with which a person states what had remained unspoken for ages when this aplomb combines with the right amount of oratarity it is sure to leave everyone dumb stuck with the resultant poise. Each one of us here is aptly imaginative and artistic to do wonders with their presentation skill and without any doubt these skills will go miles if integrated with the ultimate quality of having. ii) Control Over the ups & downs in our mind in our thoughts. And finally what this breathtaking iii) Conceptualization of Toastmaster's boasts of is a gradual but exponential increase in the confidence of thoughts. Nothing is as crucial as making sense when speaking in front of an audience. As an editor we tried our best to conclude the collation of all the knowledge, perception into following pages. The articles, the event appearing in this news letter are exact voices from the soul though the entire ExCom team contributed in the making of this news letter yet special mention must be made of TM Sanjay Gagrani, TM Sumanta Banerjee, TM Sanjay Agrawal, TM Prabhadeep Singh Baweja & TM Shamsher.

TM Amjad Ali, ACG, CL Vice President Public Relation

We would also like to facilitate each and every Toastmaster till now for being the reason that we can impressively cruise the oceans of time and one and all with us on this voyage of reminiscence. “Life is what you live and not what you think" hence fellow toastmasters be on your wings to experience the highlights of the enormous and courageous expedition to ensure The Magical Make Over. TM Sanjay Gagarani, CC, ALB President

MOVEMENT OF PRIDE As we wrap up 2017, I want to thank each one of you for your contributions to our club & the Toast Masters International. It’s that time of the year when we are busy reflecting on our past and setting new goals for our future. It’s that time of the year when fresh resolutions are being listed and plans are put in place for achieving greater prosperity. Welcome to 2018 The New Year is a fresh beginning, a beginning that is filled with bright future for all of us. It is often said that ‘stronger the foundation, higher is the building’. This is especially true for us who have seen ‘Wings of Magic’ go from strength to strength in the previous year. We were able to take our club to different levels of glory only because we were focused and worked together as a well knitted family. Movement of Pride ‘Success is a journey, not a destination,’ goes the saying and is so true for our profession. We should not rest with our success; instead we should sustain it with continuous journey to ultimate excellence - season after season. It was indeed a moment of pride for all of us when our dynamic members TM Saju Varghese and TM Amjad Ali was conferred with DTM and Triple Crown respectively during recent district Meeting. The performance of our club is something which we all justifiably are proud of, more specially when we just celebrated successfully another milestone meeting no 125th. Contest Seasons “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit,” says the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, which aptly fits our club. We need to think differently and think big. We need to continuously strive to explore and conquer the emerging frontiers of challenges. January to April is the months of contest activities in a Toastmaster world. Dear Leaders, indeed it’s the time when we tests our skills. But more importantly, it’s the golden opportunity to learn and shine. The best way to be ready for the upcoming contest is to start early. And I am sure that together WE CAN bring more glory to our dear club. Further, a number of other initiatives are also underway that are meant to add to the capacity, capabilities and skills of our members with the overall objective of making them the best leader in the world. I look forward to receiving your suggestions & guidance to achieve this objective. I as a President would like to urge you all to “MAKE TOASTMASTERS WORK FOR YOU’. There are abundance of knowledge and experience one can obtain from not only making speeches but by taking up leadership roles in club meetings as well as speech contest etc. As I conclude, I take this opportunity to welcome the onset of winter. December not only reminds us of celebrations but also about the change as a way of life. Let’s keep in tune with changing times in UAE with the onset of VAT introduction. With the Christmas being celebrated, let us vow to give our heart to friends and our forgiveness to foes. Let us display our tolerance to adversaries, offer our selfless services to nation and charity to the needy. Merry Christmas to all of you and Happy New Year!

FAIL FASTER FOR FAST SUCCESS

DTM Wilsom Lewis

DIRECTOR

“Essential aspect of creativity not being afraid to fail” -Dr. Edwin Land

DIVISION F | 2017 - 2018

There can be no success without failure. It is just a part of the process. You need to fail to win. We must have heard this quote several times since our childhood “Failures is the stepping stone for success” I am sure you will agree with the statement. If someone says that he has never failed: either he must be lying or he has not tried anything in his life time. “I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” -Thomas Alva Edison These quotes look very simple and motivating. How about applying these in your life. That is not simple. It is very hard to accept some failures. This is the time the greatest elements come to our help that is “Positive thinking” If you learn the skill of positive thinking, then the ‘accepting the failure as learning’ will come into play. We all have joined toastmaster program. It is such a wonderful platform where you can fail umpteen times. Imagine you are giving your first speech in public and there is a chance you may fail. There will be a great risk that you will never be called again to give any presentations. However, If you are a toastmaster with few years of experience there is a less chance of failure, because you have already failed many times and practice well.

“Essential aspect of creativity not being afraid to fail” -Dr. Edwin Land

A ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS

TM Kamlesh Manik, ACB, CL

DIRECTOR AREA 25

We heard this very often, possibly when we were quite young and impressionable. It made a big impact on us and we came to accept as a dictum. Perhaps it served us to an extent.

DIVISION F | 2017 - 2018

How well does it hold true for us as Toastmasters? In my view? Not much. If we want to make the most of our Toastmaster journey we have to take every opportunity that comes our way, all the roles we are offered and all speaking opportunities we can grab. Most of us do that but perhaps only in one / ‘Home’ club. That is certainly good but perhaps it is the minimum, bare minimum we have to do. What about visiting other clubs? Attending contests and competition outside of our affiliation? Why, you may ask? Every Toastmaster, each club and so on has a flavour, a feel, perhaps a bias. If in our entire Toastmaster journey we stayed glued (stuck) to that one type of experience, would we be a well rounded Toastmaster? Exposure to different speakers, evaluations, meeting themes and even roles by visiting different clubs is a great way to finesse your Toastmaster skills. Besides, variety is spice of life, is it not? Be adventurous, be bold, be a rolling stone and become as successful and known as a Toastmaster on the roll, as successful as The Rolling Stones!! TRIPLE CROWN WINNER 2017 He is an engineer in Electronic and Communication who turned into an entrepreneur for the past 25years in the field of Information Technology. He runs his business in India, UAE and US. He is the current District Admiration Director of District 105 and has served the toastmaster as the Past Area 66 Director as well as the Past President of Friends of Yoga Toastmasters. Currently he resides in United Arab Emirates.

Interview with DTM Saju Varghese Why do you consider Toastmasters program as very important one? The program offered by Toastmasters is indeed one of the best I have ever witnessed. It helps to develop and practice communication and leadership skills in the safe, supportive environment of your club, working through projects and assignments that enable you to build real–world skills in a variety of disciplines. You can learn at your own pace in a proven curriculum that was built on four guiding principles mainly Experiential learning, Peer feedback, Mentoring and Self-paced program, that have been in place since Toastmasters was founded in 1924.

What are some obstacles you have had to overcome? During my initial stages understanding the overall long-term benefits were not very visible to me. I was lucky to attend a Toastmasters International convention in Kuala lumpur, Malaysia that helped me to understand the magnitude of the organization as well as the potential benefits I could obtain from this program. Other obstacles were getting good mentors. How do you use your communication and leadership skills in your business and profession? The communication skills gained from Toastmasters have helped me immensely in enhancing my confidence, attention capturing, bringing finesse to my voice modulation. The greatest Leadership skill that helped me is the art of delegation.

What advice do you have for aspiring Toastmasters? Focus on each Project very carefully, understand and prepare it well to make the best out of this program. Be consistent and you will be able to Tell us about your experiences as DTM / and a District Excom member? Experience as a DTM, it brings lot of responsibilities on your shoulder to nature and mentor Clubs, Areas and Divisions. Members set certain expectations about you and you need to meet them as well as walk your talk. As District officers team, this gave me a lot of insight into the operations of a district and its goals and how they are achieved. When I was the Area Director, Which is also a part of District Excom, such insight into the way District operates was not very.

Interview with TM Amjad Ali (left) fastest ACG and triple crown holder by TM Prabhdeep Singh (right) WINGS OF MAGIC Toastmasters Club Mentor

What Challenges have you faced as a Toastmaster? Well, the biggest challenge was to face the audience and to speak in English before an audience. Back home in Pakistan, I studied in Urdu medium school and college where there was no scope to speak or practice English language and this continued till I landed in UAE. Even in UAE also I worked in a company where environment was not conducive as far as dealing in English was concerned. As a matter of fact it was the Toastmasters where actually I started speaking in English in the real sense before the audience and with the experience gathered during the last 6 months I feel now very much confident speaking and conversing in English with anybody. How has Toastmasters benefited you? Oh! It’s huge. Last 6 months of experience in Toastmaster has completely changed me from a shy to a confident person. But I had to work hard for it. I started non-stop reading, writing and speaking in English in the best possible manner. Fortunately I was surrounded by very conducive environment with the presence of veterans & experienced Toast masters from whom I learnt a lot. And because of that I could deliver more than forty lectures, handled more than twenty five leadership projects till now and feel very confident to handle any future projects Do you have any advice for members? I can only advise to all new members, is to take this journey very seriously & sincerely because these learning experience one will never have anywhere like the Toast masters where one you pays almost nothing but in return he /she learns a lot but with his/her own pace and abilities How does Toastmasters add value in life? To me the Toastmasters not only just add value but change ones entire life in a very positive way; it has transformed me from no one to someone. The experience was the practical one and not just reading books. Once someone completes the journey he/she can face any leadership and public speaking challenge anytime anywhere in this world.

ARE YOU COURAGEOUS SPEAKER? One of the key objectives of our life is to become courageous speaker and what it takes to become courageous speaker, let us find together. The speeches which are emotional, novel and memorable win hearts and we need to understand how we can bring our speech, having all the three aspects in our speeches. The talks that work best are the ones where people can really sense that humanity. The best talks are the ones with emotions, dream and imagination. For making our speech emotional we have to be passionate where we bring the best out of us, master the art of storytelling and practice relentlessly. Someone said ‘Passion is the thing that will help you create the highest expression of your talent. We need to dig deep to identify your unique and meaningful connection to your presentation topic’. Passion leads to mastery and your presentation is nothing without it but keeps in mind what fires you might not be the obvious. Science shows that passion is contagious, literally. You cannot inspire others unless you are inspired yourself. You stand a much greater chance of persuading and inspiring your listeners if you express an enthusiastic, passionate, and meaningful connection to your topic.

Charter President WINGS OF MAGIC Toastmasters Club

Oprah Winfrey said “You’ve got to follow your passion. You’ve got to figure out what it is you love- who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe that the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dreams.”

TM Prabhdeep Singh Baweja, ACG, ALB Past Division F Director

It is very difficult and nearly impossible to electrify an audience without feeling an intense, meaningful connection to the content of your presentation. The business pitch is one of the most critical presentations in business. You cannot influence and inspire others by speaking about a topic that you do not love. The first step to inspiring others is to make sure you are inspired yourself. You will connect with people more profoundly than you ever thought possible. You will have the confidence to share what you’ve learned as a true master. That’s when you will be ready to give the talk of your life. We need to master the art of storytelling. We need to tell stories to reach people’s hearts and minds. Stories stimulate and engage the human brain, helping the speaker connect with the audience and making it much more likely that the audience will agree with the speaker’s point of view. Storytelling is the ultimate tool of persuasion. You simply cannot persuade through logic alone.

Page# 9

Dale Carnegie believed in the power of stories to inspire audiences. As per him ‘The great truths of the world have often been couched in fascinating stories.’ There are three simple, effective types of stories and inspiring communicators and the best presenters stick to one of three types of stories. One of these is personal stories that relate directly to the theme of the conversation or presentation. Second one is about other people who have learned a lesson that audience can relate to and the third one is about Products or brand involving the success or failure of products or brands. Great speakers are indeed mavericks, adventurers and rule-bending rebels who take risks. They tell stories to express their passion for the subject and to connect with their audiences. Ideas are the currency of the twenty-first century and stories facilitate the exchange of that currency. Stories illustrate, illuminate and inspire. It is very important that we practice relentlessly and internalize your content so that you can deliver the presentation as comfortably as having a conversation with a close friend. True persuasion only occurs only after you have built an emotional rapport with your listeners and have gained their trust. If your voice, gestures and body language are incongruent with your words, your listeners will distrust your message. Your delivery and gestures, mastered through hours and hours of practice, will enhance, your overall message, but without passion and practice, your presence will be severely diminished. Your strength as a speaker comes from inside. Novelty recognition is a hard-wired survival tool all humans share. Our brains are trained to look for something brilliant and new, something that stands out, something that looks delicious. Reveal information that’s completely new to your audience, packaged differently, or offers a fresh and novel way to solve an odd problem. The human brain loves novelty. An unfamiliar, unusual or unexpected element in a presentation intrigues the audience, jolts them out of their preconceived notions and quickly gives them a new way of looking at the world. Don’t follow someone else’s story. Create your own masterpiece. When you are encouraged to unleash your creativity and to take an innovative approach to presenting their ideas, they rise to the challenge. The jaw-dropping moment in a presentation is when the presenter delivers a shocking, impressive or surprising moment that is so moving and memorable, it grab’s the listener’s attention and is remembered after the presentation is over. Jaw-dropping moments create what neuroscientists call an emotionally charged event, a heightened state of emotion that makes it more likely your audience will remember your message and act on it. Every performer has atleast one jaw-dropping moment-an emotionally charged event that your audience members will be talking about the next day. Every presentation needs one. Get one and use it. Your presentation content will make a better impact if it can be stamped onto the minds of your listeners. Don’t take yourself or your topic too seriously. The brain loves humor. Give your audience something to smile about. Humor lowers defenses, making your audience more receptive to your message. It also makes you seem more likeable and people are more willing to do business with or support someone they like. Humor involves some risk and most people don’t have the courage for it, which is why most business presentations are awfully dry and boring. Laughter lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, improves breathing, increases your energy, and just makes you feel good. If you feel good, you will deliver a better presentation, and that’s something to smile about. You have to really be courageous about your instincts and your ideas. Otherwise you’ll just knuckle under, and things that might have been memorable will be lost. Deliver presentations with components that touch more than one of the senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. Remember, the brain does not pay attention to boring things. It’s nearly impossible to be bored if you’re exposed to mesmerizing images, captivating videos, intriguing props, beautiful words and more than one voice bringing the story to life. Nobody is going to ask you to build multisensory elements to your presentation, but once they experience it, they will love every minute of it. The brain craves multisensory experiences. Your audience might not be able to explain why they love your presentation; it will be your little secret. Be authentic, open and transparent. Most people can spot a phony. If you try to be something or someone you’re not, you’ll fail to gain the trust of your audience. Courage stands out. Courage gets noticed. Courage wins hearts and minds. Courage is what you need to deliver the talk of your life. I know you have courage. Find it, celebrate it and revel in it. Courageous public speaking will transform your life and the lives of people who listen to you. Page# 10

DO WE REALLY UNDERSTAND TRUE LOVE?

TM Sumanta Banerjee

True love is when someone becomes more important to you than yourself. It is eternal. Love does not rise, it only falls and that’s likely why we have the English expression “Falling in love”, which is so significant. There cannot be any exchange in true love. With true love, you are ready to lose something of yourself for the sake of love. Unfortunately, love in general is understood as just a transaction. Normally, we enter into a relationship under the so-called framework of our comfort and profitability, and to confirm this, we say ‘I love you’. There are emotional, financial, psychoiological, physical or social needs. And this so-called love has become a sort of mantra. Of course, there would be some experience of love in relationship, but that would be with certain limitations and is bound to fall apart, since these are relationships of convenience, expectations and conditions. The moment you have conditional love it doesn’t amount to love. Love cannot be between two human beings only. One cannot say ‘I have to fall in love’. It happens and when it does, it comes from within.

“Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.”

The ancient Greeks called love the madness of deities. Modern psychologists define it as a strong desire for an emotional union with another person. But what, actually is love? It means so many different things to different people. Songwriters have described it as “whenever you’re near, I hear a symphony.” English play wright William Shakespeare said: “Love is blind and lovers cannot see.” Greek Philosopher Aristotle said: “Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” true love doesn’t have a happy ending, because true love never ends.

YOU ARE A LEADER

WINGS OF MAGIC Toastmasters Club Dubai

TM Sanjay Agarwal, CC VP Education

JOURNEY FROM ATTITUDE TO GRATITUDE 1st time in my life, I was surprised to learn that to make member or to sell your own product, I need to show off my attitude to prospective clients. In one of the training on network marketing they taught to maintain your attitude if you want to persuade your product or to make member into your group. They told me that by pretending yourself busy and expressing as kind favor to the client, you may get attention and incline your client to close the deal. Turning point came in my life when I was in dilemma of my career. I was passing through stressful and challenging phase. I shared my problem with few close friends. One of the friends guided and gave me one book to read and implement religiously. The book was “The Gratitude - A way of Life” by Louise L. Hay. I am thankful to my friend and to this book for teaching the lesson on Gratitude, which transformed my life. Few of the philosophies, I share with you and I am sure that, it will revolutionize your life as well. Be thankful to universe for everything. The more you are grateful the more positive response you find. Thank God even in the midst of misfortune. It teaches you lesson on tolerance and facing challenges of life. Someone has said that life is beautiful gift and our job is to explore it.The more gratitude you feel about the past, the happier in present. Universe always gives us what we believe we deserve and more of what you are focusing on. Believing in ourselves is the most important strength we have; it is up to us to make the efforts. Life can be a real challenge, but our dream can come true if we are thankful for what we have already been given. Give unconditional gratitude to everyone regardless of whether we think they deserve it or not. Shift your attitude from complaining to blessings. It relieves you from stress and pain. What we should remember is only the good things about each person and let the other thoughts go. Gratitude is magical magnetic tangible force. The more you feel it, the more reasons you will find to feel it, Gratitude is not the result of things that happen to us. It is an attitude we cultivate by practice. The first step of getting the love you want is to appreciate the love you have. Remember that you cannot be Grateful and unhappy at the same time !

SUCCESS IS NOTHING BUT A SIDE EFFECT OF ONE’S MADNESS

GRAB EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO REACH YOUR GOAL

TM Amjad Ali, ACG, CL VP Public Relation

“As long as you are breathing you are still in the game” I was born and raised in a humble family in the early eighties. I went to school without knowing the reason why. But it seems I was born blessed with the qualities of persistence and consistency to rise and shine and to change the fate of my entire family. Since I was not able to enjoy my childhood and teenage because of financial constraints, I believe God had a surprise scripted for me due to my persistent attitude. I remained determined and successfully started my business when I was 31 and after few years of business success I became an accomplished man with everything a successful and rich person could have such as beautiful happy family, business, travelling and independent life. The encouragement of my friends made me realize that I have latent public speaking skills and started searching for a platform to develop my public speaking skills. I got to know about Toastmasters International in June 2017, and as I experienced several meetings in different clubs I found it very much interesting, educational and a friendly environment. So I joined up immediately and started delivering my speeches and here are some of my achievements in last 4 months of Toastmasters experience.

1. Achieved (CC) Competent Communicator 2. Completed (CL) Competent Leadership 3. Completed (ACB) Advance Communication Bronze 4. Triple Crown Award 5. I have visited 42 different clubs and 108 meetings I enjoy Toastmasters a lot and take every meeting as an educational session and English class for learning. I find myself vastly improved in communication and leadership in such a short period of time and hope to continue the momentum for myself and to help the Toastmasters community and the world. One of my reasons to join Toastmasters is to become a world level motivational speaker to help the less fortunate around the globe and Toastmasters International seems to be the best platform I found. THE LITTLE GIRL IN DUBAI DOLPHINARIUM..! Recently I had been to watch the Dolphin show in Dubai Dolphinarium. There my attention was caught by a cute little girl who was very enthusiastic about the show ever since she entered the Dolphinarium. I could see that from the way she looked excited and how she actively she was interacting with her parents. Her parents were also happy to see their child so happy. One of the items in the show was that some of the children were given numbered plastic balls to throw in water at one. The child whose ball is picked up by the Dolphin is a winner. This girl also actively participated in the game. However, her ball was not picked up by the Dolphin and someone else was declared a winner. The girl walked back to her seat along with her father but there was a total change in her mannerism now. She was no more looking excited and cheerful, as she did just before the ball throwing game. She sat on her seat with folded hands and frown on her face. She was trying to express her displeasure at not being declared the winner. Her parents were trying to console her and cheer up by saying that she was still the best and that this loss did not mean anything to them. However, she sat in the same posture for rest of the show. It brought forward some important questions to my mind. Why did the child get so upset if she did not win a particular game? The reason is that she has not been taught how to take failure by her parents. Many parents, in order to please the child, always tell them that they are the best and praise them even if they err. That instills a super-confidence in them and they start believing that they are real heroes. This creates much bigger problems in life of these children later.

TM Suhas Inamdar However, the more important questions was that after the child was upset with the results, she did not enjoy the remaining part of the show, which was equally or more exciting than before. However, she did not enjoy it at all, because she was too pre-occupied in expressing her emotions to her ‘caring’ parents. In pursuit to display these emotions, she missed the show. And who was affected because of her endeavors? No one but her. The show went on as usual, The other hundreds of children and people clapped and enjoyed as before. Her parents were of course a bit concerned, but not to the extent she was affected. Here is the irony. Many adults behave the same way. Whenever they get upset with someone or something, they cannot concentrate on what is happening in front of them for next few hours, days or even weeks, because they keep thinking of the past unpleasant incident. This behavior deprives them of enjoying life’s those moments which are not going to come back ever again. And again, who gets affected here is not anyone else, but they themselves. There is no meaning in spending time about thinking regretful past and missing out on the current life. Life is meant to be enjoyed each moment…!

“NO ONE HAS EVER BECOME POOR BY GIVING.” “NO ONE HAS EVER BECOME POOR BY GIVING.” Never underestimate the difference you can make with your help in somebody else’ life. Step out, reach out and help and see for yourself the difference in peace, happiness and satisfaction that you gain. It’s a fundamental part of humanity to help others. As a matter of fact, helping others is helping you only. And the reasons? Well see for yourself in the following : 1. A Favour for a Favour As the old sayings goes....What goes around, comes around. Just like a boomerang, it comes back to hunt us may be in different form different shapes. When you help someone most likely he or she will reciprocate to you with the same passion and emotions. This is an unwritten law of nature which fuels practically every move in our life. Hence do good to get you reciprocated. 2. Karma goes both ways. “As you sow, so shall you reap” is the basic understanding of how karma, the law of cause and effect, works. ” Karma can be divided into a few simple categories — good, bad, individual and collective. Depending on one’s actions, one will reap the fruits of those actions. The fruits may be sweet or sour, depending on the nature of the actions performed. Everything we say and do determines what’s going to happen to us in the future. Whether we act honestly, dishonestly, help or hurt others, it all gets recorded and manifests as a karmic reaction either in this life or a future life. 3. Doing well feels good. Doing good makes you feel good. Being kind to a co-worker not only enables and elevates them – it lifts your mood. Adding outrageous value to a customer and making them feel like the VIP that they are not only makes them your goodwill ambassador (spreading word of your services like a virus) – it unlocks a wellspring of positive sensations inside of you. Going the extra mile for your spouse or your child not only leaves them better than you found them – it helps you feel connected to the ones you love (which promotes happiness and fulfillment). Helping others is a great way to feel better about you. Seeing a smile or even tears of joy makes it all worth it. It’s as simple as that. Page# 17

You might not get paid for doing this, but the real reward is better than $$ 4. Good publicity is the best publicity. People notice when you’re doing good even though publicity was not your intention. Even the simplest gesture can make an awesome impression.
