Pano’raman Science

For ages 7 & above I’m sam, I come from a family of chefs. Yesterday, it was my dad’s turn to prepare snacks. He prepared Mirchi (Chillies) bajji. I love it, except for the mirchi in the middle. My Grandpa said – Grow up! (Sarcastically) I took up his challenge and took a bite of bajji with mirchi. I never knew that my tongue could dance and there were water falls in my mouth and eyes. It was ridiculously hot!

I drank so much of water but the burning sensation didn’t cease until my grandma offered some milk. My grandpa said milk has fats and oils which can cool down the burning sensation. I noticed that this bald man knew a lot about chillies and I asked him

Why are the Chillies so hot ? It is chillies ploy to protect itself from rodents and other mammals, said my grandpa soothing his bald head. I didn’t believe the old man.

I saw birds eating chillies but nothing happened to them!

Pano’raman Science

So, I went to the Pano’raman! Pano’raman is our science teacher. We call him so because he has a very broad mind and answers all our questions patiently. He knows many things too! I asked Mr. Pano’raman what makes the mirchi (chillies) so hot?

Capsaicin... he answered coolly.

Capsss ... What ?

CAPSAICIN (CAP - SAY - SIN) is a chemical deployed by chilies as protection from rodents and other mammals. GrandPa was right! But what about birds? Capsaicin is on the skin of the Chillies. Birds don’t eat the skin of the chillies. They only eat the seeds, digest and secrete the seeds without spoiling. The secreted seeds grow into plants.

Try this at home! Take a spoon of chilli powder and put in the water. If it doesn’t give away any colour like in the first glass, your chilli powder is genuine. If it gives away its colour like in the second glass, it is adulterated.

ITALY

Snowy peaks of Alps, lovely shores of a chain of blue watered lakes, Great Plains watered by the river Po, little hill dressed in olive trees with hill top towns and villages, bright vine yards make Italy a country of timeless elegance and beauty.

Italy can as well lay a strong claim to be the cradle of European culture. It became the very centre of world of Music, art, architecture, and origins of Law, early ideals of Government and the development of Political life. Moreover it is home to the Christian Church. Leonardo Da Vinci, Michael Angelo, Raphael etc, were all great painters who bequeathed to Italy a rich legacy of Painting that is unrivalled. Opera, a style of Music owes its origin to Italy. It seems as if music and Italy go together naturally.

Leonardo Da Vinci painted perhaps the most famous painting in the world“Monalisa”

Colosseum is the largest ever amphitheater built by man. This was the arena where gladiators fought against each other, a source of entertainment for the Romans.

Observe carefully and you’ll find that Italian peninsula resembles a leg kicking football!

The Road Not taken

Road not taken is a sincere effort to discourage herd behavior in India. India has many opportunities to offer. However, there are many unemployed going after a few jobs and there are many jobs where few pursue.

TRANSLATION IS A CAREER Many years ago, a foreigner visited Taj Mahal. Marveled at the monument, he wanted to know more about it. Using signs and gestures he enquired the locals about Taj. On his way home, he wrote a small article on Taj Mahal. In that article he wrote that “Zakir Hussain built the Taj to promote Tajmahal Tea and a glance at Taj is more comforting than the sip of Taj Mahal Tea”. The foreigner was put to shame because of that article. Zakir Hussain neither owned Taj Mahal Tea nor the TAJ MAHAL. He was just a brand ambassador of brookebond Taj Mahal tea.

So, where was the Problem? In the Interpretation!

What is Translation and Interpretation?

Is there any course to become a translator?

The foreigner didn’t know the Local language Hindi and neither did the people know the foreigner’s language. Feeling sorry for the foreigner ? If you do, you can help and get paid as well. Yes, Interpretation is a Job. Translation too!

Translation is a written form of communication from one language to another. Interpretation is communicating orally from one language to another. It is not just a word by word translation; translation / interpretation should carry the same expression and spirit of the original text/speech.

To start with, one must have an enthusiasm to read and write in at least two languages. If you are not doing this and aim to be a translator, start reading and writing whatever you come across. It not just helps in your career, but makes you more polished, lucid and improves your personality.
