However, in regions with snow, sand and/or mud, the buck may drag his feet and/or make deeper tracks.” Dr. Harry Jacobson, retired professor emeritus of Wildlife and Fisheries at Mississippi State University, states that, “If the tracks are very large, then a good chance exists that the tracks may have been made by a buck. But generally speaking, determining the sex of deer from tracks is very difficult.”

Truth and Fiction About Deer Tracks NOV 11, 2010 07:33P.M. Truth and Fiction About Deer Tracks by J. Wayne Fears

Truth and Fiction About Deer Tracks J. Wayne Fears Can Does Have Bigger Tracks Than Bucks? According to Dr. Jacobson, sometimes deer populations are so badly managed that hunting pressure eliminates a large majority of the bucks, whereas the does are treated like the sacred cows of India, allowed to put on heavier body weights and reach much-older-age classes than the bucks do. “That’s why often a doe’s track will be bigger than a buck’s track in places where the deer herd contains does that are older than the bucks.”

Pottstown PA --(Ammoland.com)- Because so much misinformation exists about deer tracks and what information they can communicate, I’ve talked to wildlife biologists and avid deer hunters to learn the truth about deer tracks. Can You Tell the Sex of a Deer by Its Track? “The only sure way to know if a deer track you’ve found is that of a buck or a doe is to see that animal standing in its track,” Dr. Bob Sheppard of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, an avid bowhunter and bowhunting instructor, says.

Can You Tell the Weight and/or Physical Condition of a Deer by Its Track? Charles DeYoung, a research scientist and professor emeritus at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, mentions that you can note some general characteristics about deer, if you see their tracks side by side, particularly if one track is a fawn’s and the other a buck’s. But, “Generally you can’t determine this, unless you’re an Apache.”

Although most wildlife scientists agree with Sheppard, Bob Zaiglin, a certified wildlife biologist in Texas, explains that, “Knowing the lay of the land is more important to bagging a buck than seeing deer tracks. But some experienced hunters can distinguish a buck by the size of the track and more importantly by the spread of the feet.” Joe Hamilton, a certified wildlife biologist, QDMA’s (Quality Deer Management Association) founder and the organization’s Director of Education for the South, believes that, “In much of the East, when a hunter spots a big track on the ground, more than likely he’s looking at the track of a large doe. In many areas, the does are allowed to live longer than the bucks, become bigger as they get older and make larger tracks.

Can You Tell from the Tracks Whether the Deer Is Walking or Running? Dr. Keith Causey, a retired professor of wildlife science at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., says, “Usually you can tell whether a deer is walking or running by the distance between the tracks, as well as whether the toes are spread on the impact from running.”

Does Seeing the Dew Claws as Part of the Track Indicate a Buck Has Made It? Horace Gore, a long-time wildlife biologist, answers this question with, “No. Often the size of the animal and the medium the track is being placed in will determine the depth of the print and whether or not a dew claw is apparent in the print. In soft mud or clay, even the track of yearling deer may reveal a dew claw. In a freshly-plowed field, the print of a dew claw can be present as part of the track. However, a very-large buck walking across rock or hard clay may not leave a big track at all or a dew claw print in the track.”

Why Is Finding a Deer Trail with Tracks in Both Directions Important to Your Success? Dr. Sheppard has learned that finding a trail with tracks going in both directions often signals he’s at a deer hot spot. “One of the best places to find this type of trail is in a funnel region where the terrain is neckeddown by two-different types of converging habitats. Deer will move back and forth along this trail all day to get from one section of woods to the other part of the woods.” Horace Gore mentions that, “A trail like this means the deer probably are going to a food supply and coming back to a bedding ground. If the tracks only are going one way, then you don’t necessarily know what the deer are doing.”

Handgunner Celebrates 35 Years Of Excellence NOV 11, 2010 07:08P.M.

How Important Is Locating Deer Tracks to a Successful Hunting Plan? “Obviously, you want to see some deer tracks to reassure yourself psychologically that there are deer around,” Zaiglin mentions. “But on many places with dry, rocky terrain, like southern Texas and Mexico, you won’t see any tracks, even though plenty of deer may be in an area.” Gore believes tracks can be very important to a deer hunter’s scouting successfully. “If you’re scouting a spot looking for trails and deer sign but don’t find any tracks, probably no deer are in the region.”

American Handgunner Celebrates 35 Years Of Excellence

Can You Identify the Track of a Deer and Continue to Hunt That Same Deer from Its Track? Gore is skeptical about a hunter’s ability to determine that one particular track has been made by the same deer year after year. “If the deer’s track is exceptionally big, you may be able to say year after year that the same deer has made the track. But the deer will have to be an unusually large track.”

American Handgunner Magazine San Diego, Calif. --(Ammoland.com)- American Handgunner’s January/February issue hits the stands as the first in a series of six celebrating the magazine’s 35th Anniversary. This action packed issue features Springfield’s .45 XDm.

The main function deer tracks perform is to notify you that a deer has walked through a place at some time in the past. Discovering deer tracks is no guarantee the same deer will walk back through that region again. Generally deer tracks do not tell you the sex or the size of the deer.

The anxiously awaited addition to the popular XD Series has a 4.5″ barrel and has upgrades in finish, CNC cuts, grip sizing spacers along with other exciting new additions.

To learn more about deer and their habits, go to www.jwaynefearsbrand.com, and see information about my “Deer Hunter’s Pocket Reference” book.

Handgunner’s own Clint Smith writes, “Our early test gun showed the fit and finish we’ve come to expect from the XD series, and the XDm in particular. It felt solid in the hand, and the enhanced ergonomics of the grip-profile was immediately apparent.”

In this issue, Mike “Duke” Venturino takes a look at the usefulness of Big Bore Snubbies in the feature article, “Big Bore Snubbies: Brawny carry guns—or a big waste of time?” Duke got S&W Models 627, 657 and 629 from the S&W Preformance Center and put them to the test. “In my opinion barrels will differ more individually in regards to accuracy than they will because of lengths. What does suffer, is the shooter’s ability to actually hit with them because of reduced sight radius,” writes Duke. CZ 455 American Switch Barrel Rifle in 22 LR & 17 HMR Duke also comments on how the short barrel affects velocity saying, “In a nutshell, velocity loss can vary from inconsequential to extreme. The key factor is what the ammunition is meant to do in the first place.” To read Duke’s full review of the Big Bore Snubbies, see our January/February issue. CZ USA Firearms

But, each year, this small town makes a big city effort to mark Veterans Day and to honor our local veterans. Just after dawn, volunteers put out nearly 650 flags in the city park. Each flag is in memory of a local veteran. This year there are seven new flags. For the last several years, bad weather has prevented a full display of these honored flags. This year all the flags were put on display. When their task is done, there is hot coffee and pastries waiting for the volunteers at the nearby VFW post. The ladies of the Geneseo Women’s Club are up before dawn to make sure the treats are ready. As the flags quietly mark the day, ceremonies are held inside the VFW

management practice that would favor wolf-lovers at the expense of hunters, stockgrowers and others.

Wolf Policy Negotiations are a Ruse

This is definitely not the picture usually presented – that Montana and Idaho are smugly happy with the status quo and blame evil Wyoming for blocking progress to making overpopulation of wolves a permanent institution here.

NOV 11, 2010 03:21P.M. Wolf Policy Negotiations are a Ruse – we need Wolf Control

In order to radically alter the status quo, I wrote a bill that was introduced into the 2009 Montana legislative session, SB 183, that would have forcibly wrested control of wolves out of federal hands, and the hands of our FWP, and placed wolves under stern management according to the will of the Legislature (FWP not only has NOT sought permission from the Legislature for its wolf policy and practices, it has actually outright ignored legislative direction). An Idaho clone of that same bill was introduced in the Idaho Legislature in 2009. That bill didn’t pass in 2009. We fell three votes short in the Senate. However, we will be back with that bill in 2011, introduced again by Senator Joe Balyeat (R-Bozeman). With substantially improved public sentiment (improved for state control of wolves), I believe we can get this bill passed. About the three states hiring an attorney to “negotiate” with the USFWS, I believe that is a ploy invented to help persuade the Montana Legislature to not pass the 2011 version of SB 183 (no bill number yet for 2011). Heck, the feds know that the wolf train wreck can no longer be camouflaged. They definitely do not want to be seen as having their hand on the throttle of the train when it comes completely off the tracks. They want out, right now. So, there’s nothing for them to “negotiate.” Even if something reasonable could be negotiated with the USFWS, the results of that negotiation would and could not bind the federal courts or those suing to allow the wolf rampage to continue unabated.

Letters to the AmmoLand Editor: Got something on your mind? Let us know and you can see it here. Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Greetings from Montana. In a recent article about Wyoming joining Montana and Idaho to negotiate about wolves, be advised that the sentiment in Montana and Idaho is not all as it has been held out to be. There are LOTs of citizens, hunters and landowners in Montana who are absolutely fed up to the gills with our Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ tolerance of wolves, total agree-ability to do whatever the feds want about wolves, and outright complicity with the feds and sometimes illegal acts done in the process of foisting wolves on Montana.

So, there is zero potential benefit to the three states negotiation with the USFWS, EXCEPT that Montana and Idaho wildlife managers can warn their legislatures to hold off on corrective legislation while “delicate negotiations” are in progress to magically solve the entire wolf problem. Ditto for the secret (and thereby illegal in Montana) negotiations that are rumored to be going on between state wildlife agencies and Defenders of Wildlife and EarthJustice, the plaintiffs in the pending suit to block wolf delisting. Absolutely nothing binding can come from any such negotiations. They are designed only to give state wildlife administrators a reason to ask state legislatures to hold off on stronger legislative medicine while the wildlife agencies continue to cooperate with the stall tactics that are an ongoing win for the wolf advocates.

Throughout this fiasco, FWP has minimized and dramatically downplayed current and future impact of wolves, especially on game populations. Their position on wolf impact all along has been so disingenuous and so incorrect as to qualify as deceit rather than innocent mistake. Administrators have actually ordered FWP personnel to silence about wolf impact on game populations. The people of Montana are angry, almost beyond measure, at our state wildlife agency for having so readily sold Montana citizens down the river over wolves.

Negotiations are a ruse – just another tactic to stall any real solution while wolves put an end to hunting.

People in Idaho feel the same, or even more strongly.

Gary Marbut, president Montana Shooting Sports Association

And, FYI, there are many of us who bless Wyoming for having held out on wolf management to prevent the acceptance of an area-wide wolf

on trapping in Maine and Minnesota. However, had the antis won; the legal precedent set by these cases would have set the stage for much, much more than just a ban on trapping in those states. Anti-hunting groups across the nation could have used the case as basis in other courts to attack hunting, fishing, and trapping.

Your Right to Hunt & Why Canada Lynx Matters

There are all kinds of ridiculous lawsuits that anti-hunting groups could dream up if they had set a favorable precedent in the lynx cases.

NOV 11, 2010 01:07P.M. Perhaps they’d set their sights on pheasant hunters in Kansas claiming they are “harassing” an endangered species by simply walking through fields that the species might occupy (harassing an endangered species is prohibited under the ESA). Maybe they’d seek a fishing ban in Florida because fishermen could accidentally catch a fish listed as threatened under the ESA.

Your Right to Hunt & Why Canada Lynx Matters By Jeremry Rine, Associate Director of State Services

The sheer amount of time and money that these groups have spent in court highlights just how important of a precedent the lynx cases could have set for them and how dangerous it could have been for sportsmen. They’re willing to spend years in court and countless dollars on legal fees because they know that if they get that one precedent-setting win it will make it that much easier for them to chip away at hunting, fishing, and trapping in other states. U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Fortunately, sportsmen have won the first few rounds in the Lynx battles. Even so, sportsmen can’t turn a blind eye to what is happening in other states because, in the end, something that seems too far away to matter, like the Canada lynx in Maine, could end up playing a pivotal role in whether or not you get to hunt, fish, and trap in your own backyard tomorrow.

Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- For years you’ve probably been seeing our press releases talking about the ongoing court battles over the Canada lynx and trapping in both Maine and Minnesota. Hopefully, you’ve read our latest release highlighting the victory on the recent appeal in Maine.

About: The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance is a national association of sportsmen and sportsmen’s organizations that protects the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress and through public education programs. Visit www.ussportsmen.org.

In the most recent case, the Animal Welfare Institute and the Wildlife Alliance of Maine filed a lawsuit against the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife requesting an injunction to permanently shut down trapping in the state. They claimed that Maine’s trapping regulations allowed for Canada lynx, a species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), to be incidentally caught in traps.

Ultimately, the Court ruled that even if lynx were incidentally caught in traps the antis had to show that accidentally catching a single lynx “irreparably harmed” the lynx population as a whole. In the end, they couldn’t do this. Sportsmen won the case and the subsequent appeal.

If you aren’t a trapper in Maine or in Minnesota there is a good chance that you’ve wondered what the Canada lynx (and the above case) has to do with you. Why does a lawsuit concerning lynx in Maine matter to a hunter in Kansas or a fisherman in Florida? The answer can be boiled down to two words, legal precedent. Legal precedents are set when courts interpret what the law says, in this case the ESA. These interpretations are examples for other courts across the country to follow. On the surface, the lynx cases were a simple attack

Now, that experience is one of the things he’s driving for.” Today, Zeigler has overcome multiple surgeries, painful rehab and various setbacks in a long and grueling healing process. But he’s making progress. In fact, he and his fiancée, Jessica Hansen, on Saturday completed the Fort Hood half-marathon route on bicycles. RMEF supplied Hansen, who helped organize the marathon, with RMEF-logo clothing to use as prizes and gifts. Upon receiving the merchandise, she e-mailed Allen, saying: “I picked up the boxes at the Post Office this morning. I broke into tears when I opened them up. You guys are unbelievable. This stuff is really great and I know the soldiers are going to be so grateful and so happy to receive it. I’ll send lots of pictures. Thank you for not only supporting Patrick but for being patriots in general and for reaching out to other soldiers. RMEF has been life changing for us and we are only getting started with you guys! Thank you so, so much.”

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation MISSOULA, Mont. --(Ammoland.com)- A team of marathoners representing the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation was among the 3,000 athletes who spent Saturday “running to remember” the deadly attack at Fort Hood, Texas, on Nov. 5, 2009.

For more information about supporting victims and families affected by the Fort Hood tragedy, visit http://novemberfifthfamiliesassociation.org.

The Fort Hood Run to Remember, which recognized the one-year anniversary of the tragedy and may become an annual event, was part of a series of weekend activities at the post designed to honor the fallen, provide a time of remembrance for the victims and families affected by the shooting, and support those who were wounded. The event featured a half-marathon, 5k, one-mile walk, music and entertainment.

Zeigler’s friends also launched a web site: www.healpatrickzeigler.com. The RMEF team, co-sponsored by Smith & Wesson, included Kevin Jarnagin, Bronnice Green, Sean Oneill and Matt Rice. Volunteers also manned an RMEF booth at the event.

The RMEF team dedicated the 13.1-mile half-marathon to the 13 victims and one unborn child killed in the shooting. But their endeavor also honored the heroic recovery efforts of a special soldier who survived four gunshot wounds in the attack —and who still dreams of recovering well enough to go elk hunting someday.

Allen added, “Veterans Day is this week, on Nov. 11, and we ask all Americans to do your part in remembering our country’s military veterans. If it weren’t for our servicemen and women, we simply wouldn’t enjoy the freedoms and lifestyles that make us who we are as people, conservationists and sportsmen.”

RMEF “adopted” U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Patrick Zeigler shortly after the shooting, promising to make his elk-hunting wish come true as soon as he’s healthy enough to go.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation: Snowy peaks, dark timber basins and grassy meadows. RMEF is leading an elk country initiative that has conserved or enhanced habitat on over 5.8 million acres—a land area equivalent to a swath three miles wide and stretching along the entire Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico. RMEF also works to open, secure and improve public access for hunting, fishing and other recreation. Get involved at www.rmef.org or 800-CALL ELK.

A fully donated and outfitted elk hunt, along with cards, letters and countless prayers and good wishes have been supplied by RMEF members and supporters nationwide. “Our organization has developed a very special relationship with Patrick and we’re anxious to see him fully recover and eventually experience elk country and join the fraternity of elk hunters,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “We’re humbled at the sacrifices that he and his family and colleagues have made, and we’re pleased to be able to offer small but meaningful gestures to help them through a difficult time.”

Last December, Zeigler’s father, Pat, told Allen: “When I told Patrick about the offer to go elk hunting, it was one of the few times I’ve seen his eyes light up since he’s been in the hospital. He loves to hunt and fish and be outdoors. He always wanted to hunt elk but never had a chance.

The Precision Rest is made of sturdy powder-coated aluminum enabling steady support for firearms ranging from semi-automatic and bolt-action rifles to shotguns, muzzle loaders, carbines and pistols. It locks together with a quick-release lever that provides coarse height adjustment as well as fast disassembly and transport. Shooters can use the Precision Rest in prone position or on the bench for indoor or outdoor shooting.

New Ultra-Light Precision Shooting Rest Available from Montie Design NOV 11, 2010 10:01A.M.

Designer Michael Poorman, the Montie Design staffer who took the Precision Rest from concept to design, said the biggest difference between this product and others on the market is its weight and usability for on-site adjustments in rifle support.

New Ultra-Light Precision Shooting Rest Available from Montie Design Research Triangle product design firm continues to expand its lineup of shooting-related products and equipment.

“The biggest challenge in designing the Precision Rest was making it easy to adjust for the user without making it too busy or complicated,” he said. According to Roland, a former competitive shooter, the buzz surrounding his firm’s equipment has led to an entire product line which will be launched in time for the Christmas shopping season. The combined offerings will include Montie Design’s full lineup of shooting rests, as well as clothing, furniture, and accessories geared toward a rugged outdoor audience. “Online sales have been encouraging for us so far, and seeing how the firearm industry has followed retail’s lead in utilizing internet and social media marketing, we’ll be launching our new brand via an online catalog near the beginning of December,” Roland said. Over the past two years, firearm retailers and manufacturers have been posting record profits, despite challenging economic factors. This has in turn led to more jobs and increased tax revenues.

In addition to sales of shooting equipment being encouraging, Roland said, the process behind creation of his products has helped draw attention to his firm’s product design capabilities. “The shooting gear is definitely a revenue stream, but at our core we are an innovative product design shop, no doubt,” he said.

Montie.com Morrisville, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Collaborative product design and development firm Montie Design has announced the availability of the Precision Rest, the latest in its innovative line of portable hunting and recreational shooting equipment.

For more information on the Precision Rest or other Montie Design products and services, visit www.montie.com. About Montie Design Montie Design is a collaborative product design and development firm with core competencies in industrial design, mechanical design and fuzzy front end services. Implementing a client-centric approach in taking products from concept to marketplace, Montie Design balances vision with usability in realizing products that are economical to manufacture, elegant and robust. The firm operates out of the Research Triangle Park region of North Carolina with access to industry-leading technology, resources and innovative thought. For more information, visit www.montie.com.

The ultra-light Precision Rest weighs in at just 2.5 lbs for easy transport in the field or on the trail, and sets up quickly and easily to provide fine and coarse adjustment for critical shot placement. The Precision Rest is a product that fills the void between shooting stick type products and heavy duty, recoil reducing rests. “We’ve been receiving helpful feedback from customers who’ve purchased our X-Rest and AR-Rest which is leading to the development of new products like the Precision Rest,” said Montie Roland, president of Montie Design.
