conclusion appendix

introduction The focus of the semester 06 is on contextual issues. this covers aspects of responsive environments, social and cultural contexts, needs of the community and disabled members of society, climatic factors, structural elements in design, application of appropriate design and technology. The design projects have been divided to two, one minor and one major. These projects was of such nature to strengthen the student’s ability in spatial and site organization whilst simultaneously encouraging exploration of the use of technology in the design conception and visualization besides applying the knowledge on structures, building sciences and construction into the realization of design schemes. Therefore, the usage of computer technology is very much expected for this semester. In addition, the aspect of designing to local environment and context, as well as needs of the community and the disabled shall be considered. the lecturers encourage critical, insightful, and thoughtful considerations to the end-users of the design proposals and the place they are located. This undoubtedly implies that the research component is of the utmost necessity throughout the semester. all these provide new challenges for the students to overcome and come up with responsive design schemes.

MinOR PROJECT -

PARAMETRIC OVERHEAD (2 persons/group) context: fspu courtyard, uitm shah alam Task: Designing the chameleonic overhead sheltering device by parametric rules issue: The faculty’s courtyard, as the heart of FSPU, is the place for various range of events, from highly academic gatherings to strictly recreational and social rendez vous. Being roofless, the assembly of rented tents in odd shapes & fashions in this zone is unavoidable; althought they do not speak of a design-based faculty but more of a wedding-ceremony appropriate. It also means that tolerance to noisy installations and the mess of non-planned logistics blocking the pedestrian ways has to continue despite the schooling session being on. Must this be so? duration: 2 weeks

site analysis: fspu courtyard

process: mapping & mock-ups

Congestion of the courtyard was studied based on normal day, events and climate. Mock-ups to study the concept of leaf vein network, which includes Voronoi and triangulation system.

MAJOR PROJECT -

FRAGILE PLACES, VIRTUAL SPACES context: langkawi island, kedah darul aman Task: Intervening ecologically fragile places through digital mediated technologies and spaces Issue:

Nature and the man-made world have their own ecologies, each with a degree of fragility of its own. “Interruption” to this ecology might break the cycle of interdependence and natural growth of the area. But interruptions are bound to happen as long as there is human development, the most prominent symbol being the form of architecture. How could architecture take presence whilst ‘lightly touching the earth’?

duration: 13 weeks

site analysis: kilim village

interim crit 01

Further study was done to find the underlying issue of Kilim Village, the potential of Java Plum fruit, and also to conclude hypothetical programmes to be implemented.

process: idea & mock-ups

Spaces are redefined and organized, the chosen site was analysed. There were several mock-ups to test on the concept of Java Plum seed.

drawings

Form of the gallerium was further developed through Rhinoceros and SketchUp softwares.
