DEATH SENTENCES Amnesty International recorded a significant decrease in the number of new death sentences known to have been imposed globally in 2020 (at least 1,477), down by 36% compared to 2019 (at least 2,307) and by 53% on 2016 (at least 3,117).

Variations in the nature and availability of information on death sentences for some countries continued to affect Amnesty International’s assessment and ability to accurately compare trends by country.
