You’ll love, you’ll love, you’ll love this DINOSAUR PET!
Picture Books • Spring 2012
Some kids have puppies. Other children have cats. But in this entertaining new picture book and CD by multi-Grammy® winner Neil Sedaka, his son Marc Sedaka, and New York Times best-selling illustrator Tim Bowers, a little boy cherishes something even bigger and better: his own pet dinosaur! Following his best-selling Waking Up Is Hard to Do, Sedaka offers a fresh, funny, child-friendly take on his hit song “Calendar Girl,” following the delightful antics of a cuddly, prehistoric pet as it grows, and grows . . . and GROWS.

The history of rock ’n’ roll would be incomplete without the innumerable contributions of NEIL SEDAKA. Sedaka began studying music at the age of nine, and later catapulted to stardom with hits such as “Oh Carol,” “Calendar Girl,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” and especially “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.” His songs “Bad Blood” and “Laughter in the Rain” both reached #1 on the music charts. He has written over a thousand songs, received a Grammy Award for Record of the Year for “Love Will Keep Us Together,” has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In his fifty plus year career, Sedaka has sold over sixty million records. But he does not rest on these laurels: He continues to write, record, and perform worldwide. Sedaka has been married for forty-seven years to his wife, Leba, and they have two children and three grandchildren.
From a little egg the boy brings home, out cracks the most appealing child-size dino ever to appear in a picture book, with a wonderful appealing smile. But month by month, he gets bigger and wider and longer and taller. Soon, he’s eating them out of house and home, the bed is sagging under his weight, and the ceiling’s too low. This sweet saurus can even reach the fireworks on the Fourth of July! But no matter how giant the dinosaur gets, nothing gets between a boy and his pet. With its witty rhyming lyrics, amusing and gloriously colorful illustrations and a catchy, irresistible tune on the CD, kids will be reading and singing and dancing along.
MARC SEDAKA is a successful comedy writer for both film and TV. His credits include New Line Cinema’s Overnight Delivery starring Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd, CBS’s King of Queens, and NBC’s Inside Schwartz. He is also the author of What He Can Expect When She’s Not Expecting, an infertility guide for husbands that was inspired by his and his wife’s own personal struggle to start a family. Now the proud father of three young children, Marc spends most of his time playing with dolls, building puzzles, and, of course, introducing a whole new generation of music lovers to his father’s wonderful songs.

TIM BOWERS has illustrated over thirty books, including The New York Times best seller Dream Big, Little Pig! by Kristi Yamaguchi. His books have been the recipients of numerous state and national awards and been chosen as Junior Library Guild selections. His artwork has been exhibited in the Society of Illustrator’s Annual Art Exhibition in New York and Los Angeles and the prestigious Original Art Exhibition, celebrating the fine art of children’s book illustration. Although Bowers grew up around unusual pets, including his grandparents’ squirrel monkey and a singing African Grey Parrot, he never had a pet dinosaur but he definitely wanted one.

An affecting story of family, loss, and memory Dara loves the stories her grandmother, Lok Yeay, tells of the Cambodian countryside where she grew up—stories of family, food, and the stars above, glowing in the warm, sweet air. There are darker stories, too—stories of war and loss that Lok Yeay cannot put into words. Lok Yeay yearns to return to Cambodia to be with her brother. But when that dream becomes impossible, it’s up to Dara to bring Lok Yeay back to a place of happiness.

The true story of Joseph-Armand Bombardier’s journey to invent the snowmobile Joseph-Armand was a mechanical genius with the heart of an inventor. From the time he was fifteen, he pursued his dream of inventing a machine that would “float on snow.” At a time when Canadian roads were unpaved and unplowed, he was determined to create a vehicle that could get snowbound people to church or school or the hospital during the winter.
Photographs, courtesy of the J. Armand Bombardier Museum, show various snow vehicles invented by Bombardier, including the Ski-Doo® snowmobile.

It’s loads of fun. This collection of terrific (and safe) experiments will have you creating marvelous messes, making awesome discoveries, and shouting, “Aww! Cool!” when you observe some of the craziest chemical reactions around. After all, what could be more entertaining than playing with icky-slicky stuff, going gas-tastic, getting totally gross, and cooking up some really weird incredible edibles? Along with having a great time, though, every kid will also find out the real science behind why some combinations fizz and foam, and others morph into glooey glop. You’ll become wizards of ooze who also find amazing ways to whip up a wacky liquid that changes color, a pool of gloop with cornstarch, and yucky mixtures of gelatinous bogus barf or fake blood with fruit punch and coloring. And imagine making a sculpture in slime—what a masterpiece! You’ll find all that here . . . and much more. Cartoon illustrations throughout add to the amusement, and in addition to the experiments there are fascinating notes on incredible but important accidents in chemistry; fantastic facts; guidance on talking like a scientist; and of course, advice on safety and when to have adult supervision. So, whether you are mixing a muck milk shake or creating the slimiest, gooeyist mess you can imagine, you are guaranteed to have a blast.

It’s gross and it’s great—Animals doing what comes naturally. “Ewwwww” might be the first thought that comes to mind when you think of feces, but animals use poop in dozens of cool ways. They use it to trick predators and prey, send messages, feed themselves and their babies, build homes, mark their territories, and so much more.
Animal poop is good for much more than just food. Some ground-nesting birds spray a thick circle of poop around their eggs to keep insects away, while hippos and rhinos use poop to mark their territories. Some caterpillars shoot it to throw predatory wasps off their trail, while other caterpillars build umbrellas with their poop to hide under. Parasites may take the poop prize: Some use poop to reproduce, creating zombie ants and zombie snails! Get the scoop on animal poop with fun facts and cool photos, then use what you learn to surprise friends and gross out teachers and family.

Once again Lutus asked Harry the Herring to summon everyone to the abyss. Their sense of danger heightened and hoping for more plinkies, the creatures of Higgins Hole gathered unusually quickly. There was an air of tension and dread in the sea. Even the snappers maintained a respectful silence. Lutus had just climbed Speaker’s Rock when a garfish swam up to him breathlessly. The poor fellow had been badly mauled, and I felt a pang of guilt that such a brave, selfless fish had no name. “Lutus!” the wounded hero cried. “They’re coming! The great whites! Just beyond Manta Head!” The brave fish had obviously risked his life to warn us. His message delivered, he collapsed at Lutus’s feet. “We’re under attack!” Lutus cried. “Someone help this poor fish, and everyone else go back to your hiding place! Don’t come out until I announce that it’s safe.”

The strangest, stickiest disaster in American history January 15, 1919, was an unseasonably warm day in Boston, Massachusetts, and a day that would go down in history. One minute it was business as usual on the waterfront and the next—KABOOM! A large tank holding molasses exploded, sending shards of metal hundreds of feet away, collapsing buildings, and coating the harborfront community with a thick layer of sticky-sweet sludge.
