The Simple guide to a perfect BBQ I’m going to share some of my favourite exotic barbecue recipes that are simple to make, delicious and purse friendly and they guaranteed to go down a treat with your guests! Researched by : @MyaSavannah_

Garlic And Chilli Prawn Skewers

S

TA Ingredients RT 2 tbsp Olive Oil ER 1/3 cup Sweet Chilli Sauce 1/3 cup Coriander Leaves, chopped 1 tsp Lime Zest 2 tbsp Lime Juice 2 Cloves Garlic, finely chopped 1.2 kg large Green Prawns, peeled, deveined, tail left on Coriander Leaves, Aioli Dip Sauce, Coriander, Lime Zest and Juice, and and Lime Wedges, to serve Garlic in a medium shallow dish. Season to Method taste. Add Prawns and toss. Thread Prawns Step 1: evenly onto skewers. Cover and refrigerate Combine Oil, Sweet Chilli for 15 minutes. 08 Amor July 2015

Step 2: Preheat a greased barbecue plate on medium-high heat. Using tongs, remove Prawns from marinade and barbecue, turning skewers occasionally, for 2-3 minutes until pink and just cooked through. Arrange Prawns on a plate. Sprinkle with Coriander Leaves. Serve with Aioli and Lime Wedges.

Sticky BBQ Wings INGREDIENTS 6 Chicken Drumsticks 6 Chicken Wings 2 tbsp Clear Honey 1 piece of Fresh Ginger, peeled and grated 1 clove Garlic, crushed 1 tsp Chinese Five Spice 2 tsp Soy Sauce 3 tbsp Orange Marmalade 1 tsp Grated Orange Zest 1 tbsp Sesame Oil Method Step 1: Slash the Chicken Drumsticks three to four times each with a sharp knife and place in a non-metallic bowl with the Chicken Wings. Mix together all of the marinade ingredients and pour over the Chicken. Leave to marinate for at least 2 hours, or overnight if you can, turning occasionally.

Step 2: Once it has marinated, place the Chicken on the barbecue over medium-hot coals and cook for about 20 minutes, brushing with any marinade left in the dish as it cooks. If it’s colouring too quickly, move to a cooler part of the barbecue to cook more gently. It’s important you cook the Chicken all the way through. (If you’re unsure, pierce a Drumstick with a skewer: if the Juices are still pink, cook until Juices run clear.)

HEALTH 2 1/2 cups Whole Milk 2 heaping teaspoons Dry Mustard (more if desired) 1 pound Cheddar, grated, plus more for baking Salt Seasoned Salt 1/2 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper Optional spices: Cayenne Pepper, Paprika, Thyme Macaroni and Cheese and Sliders Bar: 3 yellow Onions, halved and sliced 3 tablespoons Butter 8 ounces Gorgonzola Method Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Cook the Macaroni until still slightly firm. Drain and set aside. Step 2: In a small bowl, beat the Egg. In a large pot, melt the Butter and sprinkle in the Flour. Whisk together over medium-low heat. Cook for a couple of minutes, whisking constantly. Don’t let it burn. Pour in the Milk, add the Mustard and whisk until smooth. Cook until very thick (about 5 minutes). Reduce the heat to low. Step 3: Take 1/4 cup of the sauce and slowly pour it into the beaten Egg, whisking constantly to avoid cooking the Eggs. Whisk together until smooth. Pour the Egg into the sauce, whisking constantly. Stir until

smooth. Add in the Cheese and stir to melt. Add 1/2 teaspoon Salt, 1/2 teaspoon seasoned Salt and Pepper. Add any additional spices if desired. Taste the sauce and add more Salt and seasoned Salt if needed! Step 4: Pour in the drained, cooked Macaroni and stir to combine. Serve immediately (while it’s still very creamy) or pour into a buttered baking dish, top with extra Cheese and bake until bubbly and golden on top, 20-25 minutes.

Amor’s Top Concealers

C

oncealer is a girl’s best friend, whether you’re using it to hide tired eyes and the dark circles that go hand in hand with long hours and late nights, or to conceal an awkward spot that appeared out of nowhere. Now we all know how tricky it can be to find a great concealer - whatever your skin concerns may be. Finding the correct shade for you can definitely be very confusing! Women with particularly fair skin often struggle to find a concealer light enough for their complexion, with the most common complaints being that shades offered are either ‘too orange’ or simply ‘too dark’ – even from top brands! On the other end of the spectrum, darkskinned women also frequently experience difficulties when trying to match themselves to their ideal concealer shade. Here at Amor we have tried and tested the best on the market to bring you a list of concealers worth buying. Each brand has a range of shades and tones to suit all skin colours. When finding the right shade for you, remember that your concealer should contain the same tone as your foundation whilst being 1-2 shades lighter. Words : Alice Crick and Grace Donnelly

Crazy For Curls

L

et’s not beat around the bush pun intended - this year’s Met Gala and Cannes Film Festival proves that the ‘50s Hollywood deep set sleek waves are back. As wedding season is fast approaching, not to mention proms and Summer balls, channel your inner Jessica Rabbit (or the more preferable comparison Blake Lively) to get sleek deep set waves like Amal Clooney at the Met Gala or Salma Hayek at the Cannes Film Festival instantly giving your friends major hair envy. To achieve this look, use a GHD Curling wand by twisting small sections of your hair around the tong all following the same direction, so that your entire head is laden with ringlets. Once your hair has completely been curled you then brush these out and add a light hair serum (this is optional depending on how sleek you want your style), this will loosen your curls but enable them to collect in a wave-like formation. Sweep your hair all over to one side and voila.... red carpet ready! Why not channel this 50s uber glamorous style but opt for an updo; still in keeping with the trend but adding a twist, which is what the twenty first century is about, right? Look at Kate Beckinsale or the one and only Queen B who turned heads at this year’s Met Gala (minus the lift wars). Keep hair fully tonged

Amor July 2015 17

BEAUTY and collect in a tight, slicked back ponytail, this way you still feel like a fierce female yet remaining cool in the Summer heat when all hair types have a tendency to frizz. To opt for a natural day time curl, as your hair is drying, leave it tied up tight in a towel. You can be painting your fingernails, applying your make-up, reading a book once your hair has dried it will have a loose yet natural looking curly wave. To ensure that your curl doesn’t drop out during the day you can quickly whip your hair up in a tight bun held together with a crocodile clip. Then once you let your luscious locks down and have that L’Oreal moment, you’ll have everyone wishing they knew your curly hair secrets. Words : Maisie Bovingdon

‘Black Don’t Crack' Exploring The Darker Berry Words : Patricia Obaro Odje | www.pbelle.co.uk

A

s you may know already, the urban dictionary associates the phrase ‘black don’t crack’ with how African-Caribbean skin tends not to age as much as other skin tones. So why is this? Is it simply a matter of skin tone or is there a little more to it? Let’s investigate...

Aging Regardless of the colour of our skin, humans will age and naturally appear older than their previous years. However there are two types of aging. One type is called chronological aging, determined by time. The other type of aging that the phrase ‘Black Don’t Crack’ refers to is called photoageing which is determined by the different amount of pigment your skin produces.

Melanin In our skin cells we all have the pigment melanin, stored in pockets within your skin cells known as ‘melanosomes’. The size of these pockets vary

help against skin cancer and fine lines or wrinkles, but also take into account other forms of aging that are more common in darker tones such as dark patches and age spots.

BUT REMEMBER! It is still extremely important to protect your skin with appropriate sun creams regardless of your skin tone as melanin does not offer 100% protection. As we know the amazing Bob Marley lost his life to skin cancer, so be aware!

depending on your skin tone; the darker the tone of your skin the bigger the pockets are. As a result of this factor, pale skin produces very little melanin, in comparison to Asian skin tones that produce a yellowish melanin called ‘phaeomelanin’. The darkest and thickest melanin, known as eumelanin is produced by black skin. But what does all this mean?

Met Gala 2015 Beauty Alexa Chung

Protection Because melanin in darker skin tones tend to be high in density, black skin tones are able to absorb and disperse more light because the pigments are so close together. The tightly packed melanin protects darker skin tones against UV rays. Studies reinforce the point that increased melanin also provides

style she chose made her skin glow, drawing attention to her eyes. Check out these tips and tricks to achieve Alexa’s look for any event or date night.

Alexa did not apply any product to her eyebrows which added to her natural look and complimented the darker eye colours she was wearing. Simply use a clear mascara to brush through your eyebrows to keep them in place. Collection Clear Mascara (£1.99) is ideal to get this look without breaking the bank.

Skin: Alexa has very clear skin naturally so for this flawless look, she applied a minimal amount of foundation on her skin to the naturally red areas, such as around the nose and eyes. To achieve this at home, apply a lightweight and dewy foundation to your skin with a stippling brush; giving you the glowing and natural look similar to Alexa’s. Try using Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation (£9.99 Boots), which is packed with nutrients and nourishes the skin, but still provides the coverage needed.

20 Amor July 2015

Eyes: Alexa’s simple makeup drew attention to her eyes which were bold with a darker shadow and a classic cat eye. Using an eyeliner pencil, she shaped her eyes to make them appear larger, using the liner to elongate the lower lash line, and blend it into the corner of the eye. Through the crease a light brown shade is added which helped to define the eyes. Lastly, she used a light coating of mascara. You can achieve her eye make-up with just three products. By using a chubby pencil eyeliner to create the smoky look, the Eyeko Fat Eye Stick (£4.00) blends well and gives a dark intense look. For mascara, use one that doesn’t clump up the lashes, but elongates them. Roller Lash by Benefit (£19.00) is perfect for this; it makes the lashes appear

longer and thicker, yet still natural. And finally for the crease shade, Maybelline ‘Big Eyes’ in the shade ‘Luminous Brown’ (£6.99).

Linda Hallberg

Lips: For her lips, a very light pale pink shade was used, just to make her natural lip colour appear plumper. Crème Cup by MAC (£15.50) if used lightly is a very similar shade, it will also give your lips a matte effect, similar to Alexa’s look. Words : Jasmin Woodward

Barry M’s Sunset Daylight Curing Polish and Topcoat

B

arry M’s new collection claims to be fierce competition for the pro salon gel market. No need for UV lamps and dryers, the topcoat uses natural daylight to set off the curing process, creating that fresh out of the salon look. The gel polishes are quick drying, approximately 2 to 5 minutes creating a chip resilient shiny finish that lasts up to 10 days. There are currently seven colours available and I think you’ll agree the names are fantastic - ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Red’, ‘Peach For The Stars’ and ‘The Way You Make Me Teal’ are my favourites! From deep blues and reds to fluorescent peach and nude, Barry M have created a strong foundation for the collection with all of the key classics, though I’m looking forward to seeing the range expand with a few more exciting options. The Sunset varnishes can only be used with the Topcoat for the full curing effect, however they can easily be removed with ordinary nail polish remover, so there’s no extra cost for a new manicure. Polishes are priced at £4.99, available now at www.barrym.com. Words : Araminta Pender, Beauty Editor

What to WEAR on a SUMMER’S DATE 1. A floral dress.

ight, if you don’t know, I love a fun date (especially when the weather is nice). Arranging, or even trying to find a date, is a stressful situation in itself, let alone finding something to wear! With our sporadic English weather, dates in the Summer often end in our top lip sweating (if you sweat easily, you understand my pain) or getting caught in a light British shower. Totally not needed when you’re thinking about continuing to look cute and bag that endof-night-kiss. But whenever I’m deciding on a date outfit, I try to think that anything could happen. Over planning? Maybe... but the way I see it is that you just never know where/how your date will end. With the heat coming up, and Summer finally here; I’ve thought of a few safe, and sweat proof, Summer date outfits.

24 Amor July 2015

Sexy yet not too much, plus these are often made of floating material, to keep you cool … and looks pretty too. Summer Heaven! Team with wedges and you’re good to go!

Sahana Cream Floral Print Scuba Midi Dress | £15.00 | prettylittlething.com | Tropical Floral Jumpsuit | £39.00 | MissSelfridge.com

2. Playsuits/ Jumpsuits.

These are my favourites because I’m quite tall; therefore I can never go wrong with either of them. The jumpsuit is more suited for the evening, as most will have the backs, and arms out. So even if your legs are covered you still have enough flesh on show to let your skin breathe.

3. Skorts.

You probably remember last Summer’s ‘hype’ over skorts. The skirt mixed with shorts that came in black, red and (the ones I have), the white (I purchased mine from River Island by the way)... Well I have a feeling they could be back this year and definitely ideal for a date. Cool, airy, but less chance of knickerflashing! Perfect with a simple tee, flats or heels if you have enough faith in your not -falling-over ability.

4. Midi Skirt.

One fashion trend that I wouldn’t usually wear but I’ve never been more grateful for is a mid length skirt. This knee length or longer skirt is definitely cooling, but you still look like you’re handling the Summer like a pro. Even when you’re not.

5. White shirts…

If your date is taking you somewhere fancy for dinner (which he should be) then flashing the flesh might not be ideal. Floating white shirts are perfect for hot nights, plus with white you won’t see your deodorant marks. Either team with a pair of skinny jeans, or a skirt, not too short though because you’re going to want to keep your modesty! (loool).

Brave choice but unfortunately on a date I had last year, I managed to spill wine (Rosé) down myself. But just wait… you think that was bad? I spilt it on the place any girl wouldn’t dream of… the crouch. Even though I can laugh about it now, it wasn’t very funny at the time.

2. Hot pants.

No.... Unless you happen to be a Victoria’s Secret model. Even then, I would strongly advise against wearing denim shorter than your underwear, no matter how cooling it is... Your other cheeks will soon be looking ‘tacky’ when you get turned away from that classy restaurant he will be taking you to. Finally you need to make sure you feel comfortable in your outfit choice, as there is nothing worse than constantly fiddling and pulling down your not-so-clever ensemble. Throw in some Summer heat into that panic, and you have yourself one sweaty disaster. Just remember to stick with cooling, yet not too far from your style, and the rest should come naturally. estivals; florals. An unavoidable, seemingly perfect match for those long Summer weekends spent frolicking about in fields, swaying to music whilst sipping a few ciders. There’s nothing wrong with picking some floral features to perk up your festival garb, but it’s time for change - say bye-bye to the blooms. The endless array of floral headbands, wreaths, O.T.T crowns and chains of fake daises swinging from every possible part of your outfit needs to simmer down. How about being a little more original this year, and opting out of the aged festival fashion clichés? No doubt if you avoid these go-to areas when it comes to festival outfits, you’ll be making statements of your own and standing out for all the right reasons.

1. Excess fringe. Tops, bags - but tops in particular with unduly large and long fringing just leads to one thing, being whipped in the face. This risk becomes worse when

TOP 7 FESTIVAL FASHION NO-GOES!

IMAGE: LoveBoxFestival.com 17-18th July 2015 suspect liquids are being thrown about, leading to a soaking wet, whippy mess - not comfortable at all! Garnishing yourself in fringing will inevitably lead to very awkward tan lines, too. Not a great look.

3. Excessive Tie Die. I’m all for DIY fashion, but tie-dye t-shirts and baggy dresses seem to rule over the festival fields… It’s just everywhere. If you want to shake up a plain tee, flick some fabric paint at it, sew on some gems or buttons - I guarantee you’ll have more fun in the process, and produce some great pieces to show off this festival season.

MultiPack Bindi’s | £10 | Amazon

2. Indian Head Dresses and Bindis. Cultural Appropriation is rife during festival season. You wouldn’t wear such items every day, so why treat them as fancy dress at festivals? To liven up your look, add some subtle feathers or hair ornaments to a braid and give your locks a mini-makeover.

Tye Dye Crop Top | £6 | Primark Khaki bikini Top | £17.99 | New Look

4. Bikinis as Tops. It’s definitely wise to wear a bikini top/cossie as a bra when going to a festival, as a mixture of boiling heat and inevitable water/mud fights, you’re safe in the knowledge that no good underwear has been ruined. However, rocking up with nothing but a bikini and some denim shorts is definitely not a good idea. You need to cover all bases, so rather, incorporate your beautiful swimwear into your

Amor July 2015 29

FASHION outfit. It will add a little Summer chic to any festival garms. For example, throw a crochet waistcoat or vest over the top, or an oversized shirt tied at the waist - perfect!

5. Wellies. I hate to add this to the list, as they seem so practical, but WELLIES need to be detached from the usual festival fashion. They’re restricting, sweaty, heavy and not that comfy. Save them for muddy woodland walks and opt for some ankle boots, or even better, weather watch to see if you could get away with low tops- just DON’T opt for sandals. Dust, mud, rain will all soak in and make your long walks to each act a slippery state - save your feet and be sensible!

6. Excessive Zips/Buttons. If fashion is utility in this case, then I

Lavender Wellies | £17.99 | StylistPick Crochet Playsuit | £20 | PrettyLittleThing urge you to limit the fastenings on your clothing whilst at a festival. Excess zips and buttons, especially on play/ jumpsuits only make it a nightmare when you need to visit the facilities… it’s bad enough having to use portaloos in the middle of a muddy field anyway, so do yourself a huge favour by dressing comfortably and freely. ummer for most people equals festivals. Whether it be V Festival, Glastonbury or even all the way to Benicassim, festival fever hits us all hard. With each festival catering

to different genres and ages there is definitely something for all. And with this excitement underway, the ticket paid and your bags all packed to go, there’s only the ever important festival

wear to attend to. However, for those of you who can’t attend a festival (probably like me, as I have 50,000 weddings to go to) then you can still get on down with the festival fashion. After all, Summer is made for exciting outfits and so what if you’re not sat on a grassy field, beer in hand listening to Calvin Harris DJ? Just bang on his CD and get yourself in the back garden lookin’ as fierce as ever! Every Summer the festival fashion doesn’t sway too far from the last year, as a constant wild west, fringed and cowboy theme sets the tone time after time. In saying this I don’t mean for everyone to bang on a pair of shortshorts, cowboy boots and a Stetson, but some frayed Levi’s, a cropped T-shirt and a fringed bag. However, each person’s festival style differs from the next, but with every option out there feel free to mix and match, as sometimes not followin’ the “rules” makes that outfit even better.

AMY WINEHOUSE

OVER THE YEARS

A

morelles look out for the up and coming film documentary showcasing the unseen life and death of Amy Winehouse, with behind the scenes footage and unreleased songs. We see the Jazz songstress in a light we never got the privilege to see. In light of the up and coming film, we decided to take a look at a timeline of Amy’s pivotal moments.

1983

Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14th 1983, to her Jewish parents Mitch and Janis. Amy grew up in North London with her mother, father and older

38 Amor July 2015

brother Alex, where from a very young age, she was surrounded by Jazz music and musicians.

1993

Amy’s parents separated when she was nine years old, that was the same year that Amy began to attend Susi Earnshaw Theatre School, every Saturday. Whilst there, she worked on furthering her vocal talent and education and also took up tap dance. She attended Susi Earnshaw for 4 years until seeking full-time training at Sylvia Young theatre school in 1996. Winehouse attended many other schools, including the BRIT school for performing arts in Croydon.

2000

Although Amy had been around music from a young age, it wasn’t until the age of 14 she began to write and play music. In 2000, her best friend Tyler James, sent her demo tape to A&R representatives and in 2002, Amy signed to Simon Fuller’s management company ‘19 Entertainment.’ Amy later signed to Island Records (Universal) where she released her debut album ‘Frank.’

27th 2006. It reached number 13 in the UK Albums chart and included several singles such as ‘Rehab’, ‘Back to Black’ and ‘You Know I’m No Good’. ‘Back to Black’ went platinum in the UK, selling over 1.85 million copies. Winehouse won 5 Grammy Awards for this album including ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’.

2007 2003

Amy’s debut album ‘Frank’ was released on October 20th. The album and the songs within were influenced by Amy’s Jazz background as well as one of her main musical influences Frank Sinatra. Amy won the Ivor Novello Award for this album.

Throughout her success, Amy’s turbulent relationship with on-andoff Boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil, was heavily mediated by substance abuse. Despite this, in 2007, Blake and Amy got married on May 18th 2007.

2006

Amy’s second and most famously known album, ‘Back to Black’ was released on October

2008 spelt a turbulent time in Amy’s life. She was in and out of rehab for drink and substance addiction. This caused Amy to cancel many shows and performances. album with her good friend Mark Ronson, which didn’t go ahead. On July 23rd 2011, Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in Camden, London. The cause was alcohol poisoning. This caused a worldwide outpour of sympathy and loss for a truly great artist. Amy was 27 when she died. Throughout her life and death, Amy’s father Mitch played a profound figure. He described himself as not only her father but her friend and confidant. After her death, Mitch set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation in her memory. The foundation helps young people with drug and substance misuse and to provide support for the most vulnerable through music. The foundation was launched on September 14th 2011, which would have been Amy’s 28th Birthday.

2009-2011

Amy made brief and few appearances throughout this period in her life. Many of her performances were either cancelled or cut short due to booing from the crowd or Winehouse being unable to deliver. She was set to release a third

INTRODUCING NEW MUSIC SENSATION

BONKAZ I

had the pleasure of interviewing Bonkaz at the Hustle Clothing photo shoot. He’s got a jampacked Summer ahead of him as he has just been added into lineups of shows and festivals including Glastonbury!!! And will also be releasing an EP at some point. Bonkaz talked about how his sudden rise to fame is still new and he is humbled by the support that he is getting not only by his core fans but also artists that

he has always looked up to such as Kano, Wretch 32 and Skepta. I complimented Bonkaz on his unique dress sense, I brand it as A$AP Rocky meets Shoreditch… He told me that his dress sense hasn’t always been so quirky, but in recent years he has found himself taking in different aspects from areas and incorporating that into how he dresses. Speaking of bespoke style, Bonkaz’s dream collaborations would be The Kooks, Mumford And Sons, MIA or Artic Monkeys. There’s a lot of anticipation around the release of the ‘We Run The Block’ T-Shirts. Bonkaz plans on making the T-shirts bespoke and wants his fans to wear them a few times and build a collection, as every pivotal moment of his career he

will release a memorabilia t-shirt. Although there is no set release date, Bonkaz will be interacting with his fans via social media to keep them updated on their release. I asked Bonkaz if he has a name for his fans, he explained he doesn’t want to put them into a bracket – he went onto say “every single one of them are different… I even take time to reply to all my tweets as a way of gratitude.” Of course I had to talk ladies - Bonkaz is currently single, I was very surprised when he told me he hasn’t necessarily got a taste in women but appreciates makeup in moderation and has a thing for button noses! – Cute! His celebrity crush would be singer/songwriter Sinead Harnett. I love the fact that Bonkaz showed a sentimental side in his unreleased song, I managed to get a sneaky listen to whilst on set. The song hasn’t been named yet, but there are thoughts on calling the heart-felt track ‘Honesty’ - It is a song about his ex, Amorelles, I am telling you, if your ex wrote this song about you – you would defo be back in touch wanting to give him another try! It was a pleasure interviewing such a humble, warm artist. I wish him the best of luck with his upcoming projects as well as his love life! Words:@MyaSavannah_

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHOCOLATE

W

hether it’s sadness, feeling stressed, menstrual pains, pregnancy cravings, as part of foreplay, addiction, or to stage the old-school ‘’poo on the pavement’’ prank, we all seem to have an on / off love-hate relationship with chocolate. However, with more and more so-called experts and scientists claiming chocolate is very high in calories and something we should not have too much of, is it time to break-up with chocolate, or can there be a compromise within the relationship? Too much of anything can have a negative impact on anyone be that our physical or mental health. Often it has been said that chocolate is a great substitute for sex and, although not a true statement for everyone, something that good cannot

possibly be so bad for you! Unless you have a chocolate related allergy, whereby it brings you out in spots, or a rash, why should you give it up? If you’re eating way too much chocolate (be honest) then it is definitely time to have a word with yourself! As is the case with all things, it’s about moderation, balance; meeting chocolate halfway as it were… While some types of chocolate are very bad for us, causing heartburn and other such health problems, there are those (such as dark chocolate) which have been known to lower cholesterol and offer mild relief for abdominal cramps. But, too much of this yummy, pleasurable, moreish stuff and your head might literally explode!! So, slow down the pace with your chocolate of choice, allow for some distance between you, take a break without the Kit-Kat, meet up maybe once, or twice a week and when you do, indulge in just half of its goodness and leave the rest for later. I’m sure it will always be worth the wait! ;) If you think you might be allergic to chocolate, see your GP ASAP. Top 10 Tips for Dating from Singles Badge

I

n this day and age the dating scene is not easy to navigate; from filling out long-winded forms on dating websites, to the too quick and easy swipe from left to right – the margin for error has never been bigger! Singles Badge is an app that helps simplify things; it helps you say ‘Hi I’m single’ and allows you to get to know someone as naturally as possible in this digital age. So what happens when you take the plunge and go from, virtual to reality? First dates are never easy and although awkward chat up lines in the pub seem to be becoming less and less popular, you can’t avoid the nerves of a first meeting. Singles Badge has come up with 10 top tips to help you get through your first date and onto your second. So they want to go on a date! What do you do next?

1) Don’t over-think the venue!

Going for a drink in a more intimate pub or bar is probably the best option

for a first date. Some people try to be more adventurous and creative for their first dates, but actually that can over complicate things! Picking somewhere quiet, where you can have a good chat and get to know each other is worth it in the long run. Then if there is a second date, the more fun activities can follow and will be much more appreciated by you both once you are more relaxed and comfortable with each other.

2) What to wear?

Dress appropriately for the occasion and be aware of your social environment. Men – Don’t wear a suit unless you are going to an occasion that requires a suit. Wearing a suit can look far too formal and stuffy, if you are out for a drink then wear something smart/casual. Make an effort with your appearance, i.e. don’t wear trackie bottoms, but be comfortable! Jeans and a good fitting shirt or a polo shirt make for a more casual look. You can always team that with a suit jacket for good measure. Women – Wear something that you feel comfortable in, the last thing you need is to be constantly fiddling or pulling your top/skirt down! You still want to feel amazing in whatever you are wearing though, as this gives you confidence. Be wary of shoes that are ill fitting or too high to walk in. That little black dress if teamed with appropriate footwear and accessories is always a good choice.

3) What to order

Keep it simple but keep it clean! We all love ribs, but eating them will not show

you at your most attractive! With BBQ sauce all over your face and meat in your teeth! Don’t order a salad and then eat all your date’s chips! Order something that is easy for you to eat and talk at the same time.

4) Conversation

Probably the hardest part of a date, nerves can make it difficult to keep the conversation flowing. Before the date, make a mental note of some questions to ask. Keep the conversation a mix of questions about your date and information about yourself. Ensure you listen and don’t just talk about yourself – this is a big turn off! Don’t get too political or opinionated on your first date either, these conversations can be misconstrued and you’ll have them at a later date anyway. Avoid mentioning exes! If the conversation comes up, keep your opinions on your own ex, pleasant, short and concise. You don’t want to risk your date thinking you are still hung up on your ex.

5) Mind your P’s and Q’s

It is so important to be polite and have good manners. Ensure you have good table manners and don’t talk with your mouth full of food. Don’t eat too fast either! Be thoughtful and romantic but don’t come across too strong as this can be off putting.

6) Seating Plan

Try and sit at a right angle to each other so there are other places to look apart from directly at each other. This will make you both feel more relaxed

and the date will feel less intense.

7) Phone etiquette

Do not have your phone on the table throughout the date. You shouldn’t look at your phone either, as this can appear rude. Only answer the phone if it is an emergency. If you have children and are worried the baby sitter may try and get through, then explain this at the beginning of the date. Checking your phone can be interpreted as you being bored rather than worrying about the sitter.

8) Paying the dreaded bill

Who should pay? It is always good for both parties to offer to pay for the bill, or at least their part. People have very different ideas on this situation. Some people believe it is their duty to pay for the entire bill, others feel that splitting the bill is the way forward. There is no right or wrong answer to this, but get a feel from your date as to their wishes. If they are happy for you to pay, then by all means go ahead and pay for the bill. If you feel they are uncomfortable then just split the bill. If the date has gone well, there should be another date where you can split the bill or take it turns once again.

9) The Goodbye

This is another awkward moment on a first date! But you should always follow the rule of less is more on a first date! Only you can judge the situation in terms of – handshake or a friendly kiss. That will be down

Amor July 2015 53

LOVE & SEX to how well the date has gone! But be confident in your action, if it is a handshake, make it a firm one and if it is a kiss, make it friendly... no tongues! First dates should be no more than a hug and a kiss on the cheek! They will respect you more in the long run.

10) The Follow up

If you have had an enjoyable date then it is always a good idea to text your date to thank them for the night. From their response you will be able to gauge whether or not you want a second date! If your date doesn’t respond then wait until they do. Don’t keep hassling them; be realistic in your expectations. If you get no response then perhaps they aren’t that interested. He Blew My Mind

H

e gave me the best kisses to date! I don’t know what came over me, my body was completely at his mercy. He pushed my head back against the pillow and kissed me on my forehead passionately. He forced my hands up above my head so they were linked and I could feel the cold of my bedroom wall on the backs of my fingers. The chill sent shock waves down my spine as his kisses trailed along the side of my face down to my neckline. Surrendering my control to him was mind blowing, I was panting so hard. The anticipation was driving me wild, I lost all control of my body; I didn’t want him to stop, but I was so fearful to lose control - I was whispering to him to stop. I tried to put my hands down and wriggle out of his hold, but he forced them right back up and pinned both of my hands in place with his forearm.

‘He Blew My Mind’

54 Amor July 2015

My heart jerked, I love a man who can dominate a situation. My toes curled and my nails dug into his forearm as he groped my breast. My panting increased to loud moans, I could feel his grin as his hot breath hovered over the middle of my chest. He led his kisses down the side of my waist and stopped at the top of my thigh. He slowed down the pace, released the hold on my hand and slowly put his two fingers into my mouth. He rotated his fingers slowly forcing them in and out with a slight linger on the withdrawal. I hate fingers in my mouth, it’s usually one of my ‘no go’ areas, but everything about this experience forced me to surrender to his desires. He slid his wet finger down the front of my body, over the top of my nipple then massaged his palm down to my clit. I couldn’t bare it, I squirmed with pleasure. He rose to his knees, lifting both my legs still keeping them in the bent position. His face floating just above my body, he kissed my cookie. His lips lingered just above my clit so I could feel the moisture from his breath. My body moaned, my hands lifeless, I wanted to cry out, so I bit down hard on my bottom lip. He started slowly kissing me on my clit and breathing heavily accentuating every crease in his lips. Pinning my legs down with his shoulders he began to stroke his large hands up my waist towards my breast, still maintaining my grip into his shoulders I was struggling to maintain control, the pleasure heightened. My body was uncontrollable, my abs clenched nearly giving me a stitch and my toes so tightly curled the arches of my feet ached. I whimpered! Next he flipped me over so I was sitting directly on his face, thighs either side of his cheeks where he held me up so I was slightly above

him, his tongue moved profusely on my clit. He lowered spreading my juices with his tongue, going lower the sensation was driving my body crazy I couldn’t keep still, the feeling was like spasms, an uncontrollable tick. He played with the centre just using the tip of his tongue, and then he positioned two fingers on my clit, lightly patting them back and forth. I didn’t know where to focus my attention, my mind and body was confused! Completely confused! I went into a state of shock. I completely froze up. He knew he owned me at that second. I could tell he enjoyed every moment of making me weak. His gloat was so cheeky, he lingered over me, kissed my forehead then bear hugged me… Words : Ashanti-Avril

I Think I Still ‘Love You’

I

think I still love you. But did I love you to begin with? Was it lust because I couldn’t have you? I met you and we connected, you would stare into my eyes when I spoke and I would do the same back. Whatever this was, it was exciting and new, but neither of us knew what would happen later down the line… So my story begins. It took me six months to stop thinking about you, six months to stop hurting, six months to stop the memory of you lingering over me. It was hard; it was difficult to accept the idea that you went onto live your life and be happy, and I was stuck. Stuck in a parallel universe where I was no longer with you, I couldn’t send a text, I couldn’t ring your phone, and I couldn’t be your friend - you were gone. One morning I woke up with you next to me and the next I’m knocking on your front door with tears rolling down my

face because you broke my heart; I was crushed like a little schoolgirl in the playground who had been left in the corner on her own because she wasn’t pretty enough, wasn’t good enough for you. The moment you decided to have a family with another person was when you made a life changing decision for both of us. Nine months on - I am hollow, I feel nothing, no pain, no hurt and no regret. There was a time where I would cry everyday, for a month, those days became routine. Then I woke up one day and I was hollow. Everything was gone, all I had was the happy memories, and I could say your name without crying, and absent of that dreadful uncontrollable lump quivering in my throat. Nine months - it is funny really if you think about it… It took nine months for your baby to enter the world and it took nine months for our love to die. I say our love, as that is what I was told, I was told you loved me… So now I sit here still hollow, but hollow with a small gap filled. In this hollow shell I hold something for you. That gap I believe is the love I have for you. Nearly one year later - one

year since hearing your voice and seeing that face that made me smile from ear to ear I saw you standing there at the train station, I always wondered in the back of my mind what I would

feel when I first ever set eyes on you again and right now in case you happen to accidently click on the Amor website and onto the Love & Sex page, I don’t think you have the right to know what I felt… All I can say is, I think I still love you… Words : Anonymous

T

he Riverside Brasserie located beside the river Thames provides a truly stunning setting for a great un-hurried meal whether it’s lunch or dinner – a tranquil oasis, just forty minutes drive from central London. So, why not try something new? We’re so used to

different cuisines from literally all over the world, here in London, which makes the fine food, great service and location of this restaurant a place really worth your consideration ladies. The menu offers a good but not extensive choice of dishes – which makes selection that little bit easier. We chose Liver Pate with Fig Chutney and the King

Prawn with Herb Salsa both dishes were really tasty and presentation was good. For the main course we selected Pan Fried Duck which was served with a Red Wine Jus my dining partner was asked how he wanted the Duck cooked, and received the dish exactly as requested! The Pan Fried Salmon was served on a bed of Mashed Potato was absolutely delicious, we also had a side of Green Beans to share that was totally adequate for two people. Finally, we ordered dessert – which was maybe a little ambitious – because, I was really satisfied, however I was persuaded to try the Eton Mess – Meringue Raspberry, Strawberry,

Cream light, and not too sweet – the sort of dessert you can slowly enjoy simply savouring the tastes and textures, my partner ordered the Apple and Apricot Crumble – again really good and the right size after a really rounded meal. Our only regret is that we did not have more time to take in the subtle and attractive experience that is Riverside Brasserie. Words : Jackie Jones

Shaka Zulu

Address: Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, Camden, London NW1 8AB Cuisine: SOUTH AFRICAN

M

y guest and I arrived at the high end South African restaurant - Shaka Zulu, located in the heart of Camden. On arrival we were taken aback by the impressively extravagant interior built up of 20ft high warrior statues of the warrior King Shaka, other animal statues, prints and carvings. The low-lit split level restaurant, bar and club pays homage to the nineteenthcentury reign of the King of the Zulus - Shaka hence the restaurant name.

The menu provides a selection of South African’s Game Meat including Zebra, Boar, Ostrich, Crocodile and Springbok. Many visit just for drinks. The eccentric cocktail and champagne bar offer an extensive list of drinks to choose from, from classics to their own signature mixtures. It is evident Shaka Zulu’s wine list shows great pride in its South African wine making heritage, not to mention, the waiters are more than happy to come up with their own cocktail concoctions on request! One drink to look out for while dining

is the Rum Blazer, that contains Spiced Rum, Grand Marnier Liqueur and Cinnamon dust which is presented with an entertaining demonstration sporting the technique of lighting whisky and throwing the flaming liquid between two silver tankards! The service was top quality, like the décor. Staff were friendly, polite, knowledgeable and

GILGAMESH

Address: The Stables Market, Camden Market, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8AH Cuisine: PAN-ASIAN

R

uby Mae, and myself were lucky enough to take advantage of the opportunity to review the talked about Gilgamesh Restaurant, on behalf of Amor Magazine. The restaurant is located, in the Stables Market, Camden Town and for those of you who don’t know, Gilgamesh is a pretty exclusive restaurant serving Pan Asian dishes, sourced from Japan, China and South East Asia. The stairway, with its hugely impressive carvings that adorn the walls lead us up to the restaurant where we were offered a table that gave us a view of the open kitchen – chef’s table. The restaurant boasts a retractable roof, a good seating plan, more carvings and great ambience. We felt it appropriate to ask the waiter to help with our order, which was probably a very good idea! A good idea, too, for anyone with a limited experience of Asian food. We started with Cocktails; and Edmame Beans ‘to get the taste buds going’, followed by Sashimi Tuna and Maki Rolls, and then on to Dim Sum and Tempura. The main ingredients included, Salmon, Avocado, King Prawn, Tuna, Dumplings with Scallop, Chicken and Prawn, Pumpkin, Lemon Sole and condiments. Our waiter gave us tips on

the order in which to move, slowly, through the sequence of appetising tastes – which if eaten too quickly would probably fill most diners. We were then guided onto the main course of Baby Chicken and Beef accompanied with Green Rice which was flavoured with Coriander and a great tasting Red Wine. Finally, as recommended by our waiter we shared the Chocolate Fondant Dessert with Ice Cream – Sweet Heaven!!!!! From cocktail to dessert the presentation was excellent – a riot of colour texture and shape. I have to say girls, this was a truly memorable taste experience, we were at the table for around three hours being indulged with great, mouth-watering tastes. Gilgamesh comes highly recommended whether it be a large party or a more intimate meal for two. It is a most pleasurable experience, it certainly seduced our senses of taste, smell and sight. Thank you Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is set to impress even further with a new champagne bar and private chef’s table called Belle Époque. Words : Jackie Jones

Happy People Don’t Just Happen: 10 Ways to Find Joy in the Everyday

Words : Yazmin Joy Vigus | @yazminjoy | www.aliljoy.com eople keep telling me I’m a happy person. Really? REALLY!? Moi? These people clearly haven’t seen me at 6am post-coffee-time. Turns out happy people don’t just happen. It takes work to be a smiley, positive person. And if you’re like me, it doesn’t always come easy. Do you ever find happiness hard work? If your answer is ‘yes’, you are NOT alone. Life is tough, man! ‘Whatever your predominant thoughts are, will be But there are some things expressed in your health and surroundings, which you can do to perk up your means that your future is entirely under your own daily routine and boost your control’. Dr Venice J. Bloodworth mood.

P

10 Ways to Find Joy in the Everyday: 1. Positive Affirmations

Start the day by declaring words that affirm and empower you. I am loved. I am wealthy. I am beautiful. I am smart. I am prosperous. I am healthy. Feeding yourself positive affirmations aligns your mind with your desires. Prayer and meditation grounds your emotions.

62 Amor July 2015

2. Listen to Feel Good Music

Is it time to update that playlist? Permission to get your groove owwwn! It’s been scientifically proven that music can have the effect of raising levels of dopamine, the same chemical released in the brain when you’re in-love, by as much as 9%.

3. Work it!

Exercise increases endorphins and makes you happy. Period. Don’t have time to squeeze in a gym session? Make small adjustments to your daily routine that work for you. Why not take the stairs instead of the lift? Cycle instead of drive? When you walk, walk briskly so you get your heart rate up. Do a type of exercise which you ENJOY too. If running isn’t your thing, take up a dance class. If you don’t like being indoors

do an outdoor activity instead. If you make it enjoyable you are less likely to quit!

4. Set Realistic Daily Goals

When you break down long term aspirations into smaller manageable chunks you have the satisfaction that you made progress. Success is a culmination of lots of smaller steps. Happiness is an ongoing attitude not a product of success.

5. Make Appreciating the Little Things a Habit

Hmmm, doesn’t this coffee taste delicious? The sun is shining, how marvellous! Oh goody, rain – I love puddles. See what I mean!? This is about you tuning your brain to take joy in the world around you. As Rachel Hickson explains in her 40 day devotional Pathway of Peace, ‘experts tell us that it takes three weeks of concerted effort to change a negative behaviour and six weeks to establish a new positive alternative’.

6. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

In a recent study by The Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, researchers found a strong correlation between depression and social media. It turns out comparison really IS the thief of joy, with more of us looking through filtered lenses at the world of our peers. In the digital

age we are attuned to immediate approval and instant gratification. Problem: IT’S STEALING OUR JOY PEOPLE!! Tip: when you see someone excelling in life, don’t let it discourage you, let it INSPIRE YOU.

7. Give Yourself a Pat on the Back for Your Daily Achievements

Many of us spend so much time focusing on what we have to do next we forget to give ourselves kudos for what we have done. You’re awesome! Remind yourself that.

8. Be Kind to Yourself

You are not perfect. You are not a robot. And hell, there will be days you’re not a fountain of joy either. And that’s OKAY! Make a balls up? Allow yourself to process how you feel. If you need to let off steam, do it. Then learn and move on. Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Perfection is overrated.

9. Understand that Setbacks DO NOT Mean Step Backs

Don’t let setbacks steal your joy. Easier said than done, I know, but as leadership expert John Maxwell explains: ‘adversity is always the partner to progress’. Next time you are confronted with a setback see this as a challenge that is shaping your character, skill and ability to move forward. Pow pow!

10. Lift Someone Else Up

When you are feeling like crap, try lifting someone else up. So simple, yet powerful. Supporting someone else, paying someone a compliment, speaking well of other people – is all about outward thinking. You get what you give.

BOOST YOUR CAREER JOB SEARCH DO’S & DON’TS Words : Jan-Marie Revers @JMRevers

DO’S

1. Get organised. 2. Time management. 3. Prepare - Tackle interview questions. Questions such as; “Why should we hire you?” and “What do you know about the company?” are inevitable in an interview. So is the “Tell me about yourself” line. However, this is where the majority fail to ‘sell’ themselves.

4. Understand yourself and your

talents and research the company.

64 Amor July 2015

5. Ensure there are no gaps in your employment history. If you do, make sure you can justify these breaks.

6. Check your spelling and grammar. 7. Stop procrastinating. Apply, apply, apply!!!

DON’TS

1. Don’t send the same cover letter – edit accordingly. A generic cover letter which you send to all employers is a lazy approach to job searching. Employers can often tell when a cover letter was not tailored specifically for the advertised role.

EUROCENTRISM, ETHNICITY AND THE

GIRL CHILD

W

atching ‘The Doll Test’ for the first time was a harrowing experience. Comprised by the African-American psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark in the 1940s, video footage of the test shows shocking footage of children innocently associating a white-skinned doll with positive characteristics and a dark-skinned doll with negative personality traits. Regardless of the country, the culture in which these children have been raised, and even the ethnicity of the child who is answering the questions, they collectively reach the same conclusion.

Beauty is a concept that is ingrained into the mindsets of young girls almost from the moment of birth; to be beautiful is to be successful, to be liked in the eyes of men is to be successful. Beauty may, in itself, be a problematic measure of success, but it undeniably defines the self-confidence of the vast majority of young girls and women in our society. However, when the universally accepted definition of beauty is Eurocentric, and therefore whitewashed, there is little we can do in terms of providing the girl child of ethnic minority parents with this self-confidence. It is arguably the role of media representation to, through the establishment of relatable, What this is demonstrative of is an aspirational characters to build selfinternalised racism and internalised confidence; of course, Walt Disney’s filmic inferiority that, although subconscious, is potentially fatal. If, in childhood, these children are indoctrinated with racial prejudices, what is there to stop these attitudes being carried forward into adolescence, into adulthood, and ultimately passed through generations? Something to consider when watching the darkskinned girl child point to the darkskinned doll and call her ugly.

Amor July 2015 65

LIFESTYLE kingdom - full of princesses punctuates every young girl’s personal development and self-awareness. Fairy tales, when told orally, allowed children the imaginative freedom to create a character within their own minds, but the translation of fairy tales into a visual, filmic medium means that the viewer is given a set visual image of the character, and thus

we need to be teaching young girls is to celebrate personality traits outside physical appearance, such as intelligence, kindness and courage. Disney princesses, thankfully,

perhaps a set image of what constitutes beauty. When only four of the eleven Disney princesses are ethnic minorities, seemingly created, according to The Daily Tugrum, ‘to appease minority viewers’, we have a huge problem in media representation. As the article goes on to claim, ‘a token princess is created and then producers are done with the minority.’ Film production companies, scriptwriters, directors, and perhaps everybody involved in the Disney filmmaking process is avoiding the responsibility they have towards an audience of young girls who are growing up in an increasingly multicultural environment. If children’s culture, through which they are socialised, does not undergo a timely evolution alongside social and demographic change, how can we expect children to adopt progressive values? To return to the previous point about beauty being a problematic measure of success, perhaps what

also have these human qualities, but somehow these are always overshadowed by their beauty. We, as adults, are responsible for instilling certain values in children, and it is therefore down to us to redefine what selfconfidence should be and where it should come from. Racism and ageism are just two examples of many when it comes to the ways in which human beings formulate prejudices against one another. Just some food for thought. Words : Sharlene Gandhi
