s we all know, the gym is going to be heavily populated this time of year and even though you may want to improve your lifestyle the gym crowd may not be your thing. So we’ve compiled a short-list of alternative workouts that take you away from machines and double up as great hobbies:

Yoga/Pilates

Yoga is steadily becoming a more popular extra curricular workout. It encourages flexibility, it helps with stress by calming your mind and over time you develop tone and muscle, when lifting your body weight.

Dance

Anyone who stays on the dance floor all night knows that dancing is a real workout! Perhaps a Salsa class in a bar, a Hip Hop dance class, Tap, or Contemporary. It can be anything. You can even up the ante by wearing small wedged heels during a class to work out the legs and glutes.

Marathon

Marathons are probably a lot less

Lamb With A Cranb erry, Tomato and Thyme Crust Lamb is a great source of protein and the cranberry gravy gives a lovely warm feel to it.

Researched by : Laura Ward Ingredients for Cranberry gravy • 1 clove of garlic, crushed • 1 bottle of rosé wine • 1 large sprig of fresh thyme • 4tbsp cranberry sauce • 2 tbsp caster sugar • 25g butter, olive oil spread can be used to make it healthier.

Ingredients for Lamb • 2 garlic cloves • 1 red onion, chopped • 1 leek, sliced • 1 green pepper sliced and deseeded • 50g sun-dried tomatoes • 3 tbsp cranberry sauce • 2tbsp thyme leaves • 3 racks of lamb, chined. Recommend asking your butcher to do this for you • Pinch of sea salt • Ground black pepper

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Place the garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, cranberry sauce and thyme into a food processor using it to form a smooth paste.

Season well with freshly ground black pepper.

2. Trim most of the fat off the lamb. Spread the cranberry mixture generously onto the outer side of the lamb to coat evenly. Put the crust side up onto a roasting tray, season with a pinch of sea salt and a generous amount of ground black pepper.

3. Boil the kettle and pour a small amount of water in the tray around the lamb. Add the pepper, sliced leek and onion to the water in the tray.

4. Place in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes for medium-rare or for well-done 30 minutes. If the crust starts to burn cover lamb loosely with foil.

5. Whilst the Lamb is cooking, this is a good time to prepare the cranberry gravy.

Put the garlic, rose wine and thyme into a large pan, bring to the boil and boil rapidly for 15 minutes or until reduced by half of the liquid. Strain, discard the thyme and return the wine to the pan. Add the cranberry sauce and caster sugar and stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Set aside.

6. After the lamb is cooked, take out from the oven. Transfer it to a warm plate and leave to rest for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, pour the rose wine mixture into the roasting tin and bring to the boil, scraping up all the pan juices into the gravy. Whisk in the butter until glossy and season to taste.

Cut each rack of lamb into cutlets and serve with the cranberry gravy, roasted or mashed.

Lemon and Lime Risotto

Ingredients • 2 shallots • 1 stick of celery • 60g unsalted butter • 1 tbsp olive oil • 300g risotto rice • 1 litre vegetable stock • 1 unwaxed lemon and 1 lime, juice and zest • 2 sprigs rosemary, leaves picked and finely chopped, plus extra to garnish • 1 egg yolk • 4tbsp parmesan, grated, plus more to sprinkle • 60ml double cream

This Risotto is for the days when there is the light blue sky and a small breeze, but the chill factor is still there. The creamy texture fills you up keeping the energy going for the cold day, and the lemon is refreshing to keep the day beaming.

Method

1. Place the shallots and celery into a food processor. Do not leave food processor on, start and stop the machine quickly until they are a finely chopped mush.

2. Heat half the butter, the oil and the shallot and celery mixture in a wide saucepan, and cook to soften the mixture (approximately 5 minutes.)

Make sure the mixture doesn’t start turning into a brown colour.

3. Add and mix the rice in.

4. Heat the stock in another saucepan, keeping it at simmering point.

5. Pour in a cup full of the stock into the rice and keep stirring until the stock is absorbed.

Then add another cup full and stir again, continue doing this until the rice is al dente.

You may not need all of the stock, equally, you may need to add hot water from the kettle.

6. Mix the lemon and lime zest with the rosemary into the risotto, and in a small bowl beat the egg yolk, lemon juice, parmesan, cream and a pinch of black pepper.

7. When the risotto is ready (- when the rice is no longer chalky but still has some bite) take it off the heat and add the bowl of eggy lemon and lime mixture, and the remaining butter and season with salt to taste.

Serve with more grated parmesan if you wish.

It is ready to dive in.

Banana and Nutella Cake Bar with a Zing

This cheeky cake idea, is good for the pallet and for the calorie counting. chocolatey! Researched by : Laura Ward Ingredients for Cake 200 calories per slice • 150g softened butter • 75g light soft brown sugar • 50g golden caster sugar • The zest of 1 large orange •½ 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 3 large eggs, beaten • 175g self-raising flour • 2 medium bananas, approx 180-200g peeled weight • 2 tbsp Nutella

INGEDIENTS FOR CAKE Icing • 75g icing sugar • 1 tbsp cocoa powder • 25g butter, softened • 1 tbsp milk • 1 tbsp Nutella • Small hand full of grated cocoa beans

Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180C/160 fan/gas 4. Line an 18cm square baking tray.

Grab a bowl and cream together the softened butter, sugars and vanilla, until pale and fluffy. Beat the eggs into the mixture, a small bit at a time, adding a spoonful of the flour to avoid curdling.

Sift the remaining flour into the bowl, and fold in gently.

2. Pound the bananas in a bowl with a fork, making sure no large pieces remain.

Fold into the cake mixture, adding the zest of the orange. Spread half the mixture into the bottom of the tin.

3. Gently warm the Nutella in a small saucepan or microwave. Mix the grated coco beans in with the Nutella (add as much as you desire depending on how chocolaty you want it.) Using a teaspoon, dot the Nutella across the surface of the cake mixture in the tin and use a sharp knife or toothpick to marble it evenly throughout.

4. Cover the Nutella layer with the remaining cake mix and spread evenly.

5. Bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until the cake starts to shrink away from the edges of the tin. Remove from the tin and leave to cool on a wire rack.

6. While the cake is cooking, this is a good time to prepare the icing.

Sift the icing sugar and cocoa powder into a bowl. Rub the softened butter into the icing sugar using a spatula, then add the milk and Nutella. Whisk with an electric mixer.

7. Once the Cake has cooled down add the icing on top evenly spreading it out.

There you have your Nutella banana cake bar.

For decoration add chopped hazelnuts on the top and cut in to slices of your choice.

Rhubarb and Straw

• 300g rhubarb, ends trimmed Scatter them over a large, heavy baking tray • 2 tbsp honey with sides, sprinkle over the 2 tablespoons of • 2 tbsp golden caster sugar, plus 2 sugar and toss together. Spread the rhubarb tbsp out on the tray then roast for 8-10 minutes • 200g strawberries, halved or or until just starting to soften. Scatter the quartered depending on size strawberries over the top, sprinkle over the 2 Ingredients for topping teaspoons of sugar and drizzle 1 tablespoons of • 200g double cream honey. Roast for 4 more minutes until the fruits • Toasted almonds are just tender but still holding their shape and the juices are syrupy. Remove and leave on the baking tray to cool. The Roasted Fruits are now ready.

2. Mix the sugar, custard powder and corn flour in a medium saucepan with 2 tablespoons of the milk to make a runny paste.

Beat in the egg yolks then stir in the rest of the milk.

Scrape in the vanilla seeds, then drop in the pod.

Cook, stirring constantly, over a medium-low heat, until the mixture is thick. Just before it boils, remove from the heat and stir in the creme fraiche until smooth.

Pour into a bowl, cover the surface with cling film to stop a skin forming, cool, then refrigerate until completely cold.

That is the custard prepared.

3. When both the custard and roasted fruits are ready, crumble the amaretti biscuits into 4 serving dishes of your choice.

4. Meanwhile, whip the cream till soft. Layer the fruits over the amaretti biscuits, along with some of the leftover juices. Remove the vanilla pod from the custard, then spoon the custard over the fruit. Finish with a dollop of the cream and a sprinkling of chopped almonds.

Does Moschino embrace being a ‘Chav’?

hat word begins with C, contains four letters, and is one of the most offensive words in the English language? It’s definitely not the word you think it is, so let me help you out… CHAV. The definition of a ‘Chav’ is a young ‘lower-class’ person, known for their ‘reckless and rude’ behaviour.

They usually wear (real or imitation) designer clothing on an extreme level and purposely embrace the OTT (over the top) look… sounds classy right? Lol. Well many people have called Moschino ‘chavy’, but is that really an offence to Jeremy Scott? The American designer is about making a statement, and maybe this is partly his way of making it. Scott’s Autumn/Winter 14 collection with the ‘McDonolds’ design is a great example of this.

Remember the tune? Picturing Will Smith? Bikini clad girls and a load of guys sat round cars? Nah? - Probably just me. But you know what, this song is probably one of the songs that comes into my head when I’m thinking of Summertime. Along with a picture of a girl with an amazing figure in a beautiful bikini on a beach somewhere. Roll on 2 seconds later and even more vivid image of myself in a bikini, most likely with a bag of cheetos in hand and then I start to feel violently sick. This happen to you too? If not, I’d imagine that you’ve already got a great body or you’re just totally up on your fitness game. However, at the moment I am not. Dark nights and warm food are currently where it is at...Thus why I give to you the below information.

For each and every woman we can have a period, time or even flash of our lives where we don’t feel physically our best.

When we don’t feel this it can sometimes be translated to our confidence and then onto how others can perceive us. Every woman comes in different shapes, sizes, heights and weights and there would be no beauty in the female form if we all looked the same. Saying this, when we go away, however great we think our body is (or not), we always need a bikini that fits our body shape. As without this we’d end up wearing something that just makes us not only look a littttle bit strange. Vain you may say? But oh so totally true. Comfort in a bikini is key, but in finding this comfort you most likely will need to find the perfect fit too. Therefore I give you below an option for each body shape out there, as who doesn’t love to have a little helping hand? I know I do.... so just where are those body-toning tips for Summer? ihanna turned heads last month as she headed to Good Morning America in a head to toe pink ensemble.

Whilst she has never been one to shy away from fashion forward outfits, she really did nail it yesterday. The full on pink look definitely turned heads and I think if anyone can pull it off Rihanna certainly can! had the pleasure of interviewing America’s Next Top Model Annaliese Dayes and her best friend Dani J who was a mentor on ITV show Model Mayhem & Misfits. The two beauties decided to embark on the life changing experience of Rally De Gazelle, a 9 day all female motor race rally in the Moroccan desert.

They have limited resources and without mobile phones, GPRS or essentials. They explained that this is going to be one of the biggest challenges they have ever done but it is all for charity and will be completely rewarding.

As I had two absolutely gorgeous models in front of me, of course we had to talk about MEN! I got the inside scoop of the girls ‘types’ and

they also shared some very personal stories about their worst first dates.

It was truly refreshing to interview such beautiful, humble and honest hard working women. I wish the girls best of luck in the future!

On coming back from the rally, Annaliese and Dani J comments on how they found the experience: “The whole adventure felt like a wild dream. So many challenges, obstacles and boulders; packed into every day. Who knew we’d get caught in a full blown blizzard? Yes an actual blizzard! I saw things i’d never thought i’d see and did things I never thought I would do. But at the end of it I’m proud that I proved I was able to exist outside my comfort zone; and I really hope that that can inspire

At Amor we are loving the new series Not for the Radio (NFTR).

NFTR is hosted by Duane Jones (AKA Vis), Posty from GRM Daily and Chams from Face4Music. The three enigmatic hosts get UK’s finest artists to lay bare their secrets and clear up any rumors.

Apart from titillating tales about the music industry, there is also a lot of wisdom dropped.

Lethal Bizzle who is known for his legendary grime hit POW, revealed exactly how much money each artist on the track was paid.

Bizzle’s interview focuses on money matters, he reveals that he’s been broke and to avoid that he only buys what he can afford twice.

NFTR’s latest interview with So Solid’s Megaman was interesting and insightful. Apart from talking about the music business, he also revealed that he used to date American singer Kelis.

It’s reminiscent of America’s Breakfast Club with how the hosts probe the interviewees and ask them uncomfortable questions. NFTR shows a different side to many of our favourite artists and helps us get to know them better. We look forward to more eye-opening and exciting shows form the series.

Why Empire will be missed

I

have been streaming the Empire musical drama series and have just finished the first series!

The US TV show that has been dubbed a “HipHop version of Glee”, has finally come to end for now. Empire has been labelled stereotypical, accused of not being inclusive due to the majority black cast and some have even called it “coonery”. I strongly disagree with Empire’s detractors; it’s an addictive show that tackles ignored issues and it will be sorely missed.

Empire centres around a HipHop music and entertainment company, Empire Enterprises.

The despicable Lucious Lyon played by Terrence Howard heads Empire. He has three sons, the eldest Andre who plans to run Empire but lacks any musical talent. His middle son is Jamal who is a gifted singer but his father shuns him because he’s gay. Then his youngest son is Hakeem, an aspiring rapper, who is unfortunately mediocre but is the apple of his father’s eye. Their mother is the feisty ex-convict Cookie played by the amazing Taraji P Henson.

Lucious Lyon isn’t just all things evil; he’s a representation of hyper-masculinity that dangerously runs rampant in the black community. His rejection of his son – Jamal’s sexuality,

forcing him to get married and pushing him in a trashcan is a harrowing narrative that is deeper than just the shock factor.

Another poignant moment is when eldest son Andre is diagnosed with the bipolar disorder and Lucious stridently says that black people don’t have these sorts of problems.

The stigma around the mental illness in the black community is an important taboo that needs to be addressed. I am all for Empire showing that mental health has no colour.

Empire is also rollickingly good fun. The twists and turns have me clutching my chest. Some people have complained about the use of guest stars but I love it and see it as a display of black excellence.

The finale attracted more than 17 million viewers a huge growth from the pilot’s views.

Empire will be sorely missed. The only thing I’m happy I won’t have on my screen is Hakeem and Camilla (Naomi Campbell) romantic scenes.

Empire will be available for its UK audience on channel E4 on Tuesday 28th April 2015.

pring has quite literally sprung up on us; which means we will soon be spending a lot of time (and money) at summer festivals. However, ticket prices are increasing year after year with some festivals charging over £200 per ticket.

Thus, for those of you looking for a weekend of great music without the hefty price tag; we have put together a list of some of the best budget festivals in the UK this summer.

1. Love Saves the Day

23-24th May 2015 Eastville Park, Bristol The festival boasts an all-star dance line up of Azealia Banks, Gorgon City, Redlight and Julio Bashmore to name a few.

Weekend tickets are currently selling at £80 which is less than half the price of most major UK festivals.

2. No Tomorrow Festival

6-7 June 2015 MNEK, John Newman and Jessie Ware are all rising British stars who have already been confirmed to play alongside established legends such as DJ EZ this Summer.

amuell Benta, creator of the hit web-series All About the McKenzie’s, released a video-rant online earlier this year effectively stating that he feels there are far less opportunities, together with a huge lack of support, within the acting field in Britain. He then fled to America in the hope of finding the success he hasn’t found in the UK as an actor. Since the 1950s, it has been a well known fact that Black actors have struggled more so than any other race to get a foot in the door of the entertainment industry and once there, it seems their careers are short lived after having usually been typecast in stereotypical roles such as ‘the

violent thug’, or as a background artist. The UK has also seen black talent as fitting enough for roles considered ‘behind the scenes‘, like that of a radio show intern/assistant however, not so much as an on-screen presenter on mainstream television. Is this all about to change though? Once upon a time talents categorised as ‘Ethnic’ would only receive the smallest parts (on stage/screen). Nowadays, although things have massively improved for black talent in the UK, black performers now appear only to see real success if they make the move to Los Angeles (the land of dreams supposedly). The likes of Idris Elba (Luther, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom), David Oyelowo (Lincoln, Selma), Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean, Skyfall) and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda, The Secret Life of Bees) are British actors who each saw their profiles raised after pursuing opportunities across the pond! So, what is the real issue for those who are Black, talented but, British? What prevents them from getting a look-in, as it were, with leading roles that do not call for them to portray a stereotype? I think Naomie Harris summed it up beautifully in an interview when she said, “I think it’s quite simple, really and that’s work. I think there just isn’t enough work in England to sustain a career long term unless you want to do one of the British soaps and stay on that. We have to travel across to the States because, they have a much bigger market; it’s a much bigger industry and therefore there are a lot more roles for us and that’s why actors end up going to the States.” She has a valid point. After all, the need for more films, gritty TV drama and with them diverse character opportunities has long been the desire of numerous British actors who are serious about their craft.

That said a lack of support within the Black and EthnicUK talent circle is also a problem. If we were all a little more supportive of one another I’m sure that would play a massive part in many more being able to achieve their dreams of success!

requently women are told we are not ‘real’ women if we cannot orgasm during sex. Whether we’re being mislead over the ‘this is how sex should be’ scenes from a film or the glossy pages of a magazine telling you how to receive the perfect orgasm, is not all true. I covered the ensemble with a long black fur coat and I was ready for business.

Due to the celebration, I drew for one of my favourite bottles of champagne (Moet Chandon) accompanied by two champagne flutes, the latex free condoms (SKYN) and hit the road. As he’s about to slide both fingers in, I reach for the of champagne. 4 shots of rum and two glasses of champagne in 30 minutes... I realise I may have crossed my tipsy line.

We fumble around and by this point I’m just begging for him to put it in. He makes me wait!

I feel him edging me lower to go down on him, trying my hardest to maintain my posture I resist and stumble slightly.

He takes the hint, turns me round and thrusts himself inside of me. Numb from the alcohol, I can feel how wet I am and my body is weakened by the feeling.

The Conundrum of ‘You Complete Me’ I

f I only had those Jimmy Choo shoes, if I only got a promotion, if I only had a thousand Twitter followers, if he only liked me back…

We’ve all been there. You walk by a shop window or bump into an old crush and you feel that pang, if I had you – I would be complete.

I’ve been thinking about the connotations of ‘you complete me’ for a while now. The idea that we need certain people or things in life to fulfil us otherwise we are insufficient.

When I was a kid I used to daydream a lot about love. It was kind of like my hobby, mainly spurred by noughties chick flicks and songs by the Backstreet Boys.

I used to imagine love was the missing puzzle piece to my fragmented tortured teenage soul. That love would heal all my emotional wounds, define my place in society and make me feel complete.

In my teens, my boyfriend became my best friend, my family, my partner in every aspect of my life. I grew up with this notion that love and validation from another person would fulfil me, and for a while it did. It was not until years later when we broke up that I was faced with the hard truth: no one can complete anybody else. And it’s unfair to expect them to.

The concept of ‘you complete me’ can be toxic because in reality there is not one damn thing, person or commodity that can

complete us, except for our own selves. If you feel insecure about your body, then a relationship will not fix those insecurities, it will only haze them for a while. If you feel like a relationship will stop you from feeling lonely, guess what? If you’re with the wrong person, it’s the loneliest thing in the world.

Living life with the philosophy of ‘you complete me’ is like filling up a bucket with a hole in the bottom. It’s never enough. It’s conditional. It’s temporal. It places your happiness in the palm of someone else’s hand. It’s that faint but mighty voice that whispers a million little deceptions: ‘without this I am lacking’, ‘If you don’t love me, I am not loved,’ and ‘I am not enough on my own’.

Well lady, I want to tell you, that maybe you don’t always feel ‘complete’, maybe you don’t have your shit together all the time.

Maybe you are a work in progress BUT, my friend, you are enough.

Believe me. Your life isn’t the abridged version of you, it’s the full hardback copy with a bonus chapter.

Leaning on another person so much that you can’t function without them isn’t love, it’s reliance, it’s dependence, it makes love a necessity when it should be a choice. Love should always be a choice. A choice of actions, a choice of words, a choice of commitment.

How about instead of ‘you complete me’ we go with ‘you don’t complete me… but I want you anyway?’ Maybe not movie worthy – but still romantic, right?

They say it’s not good to compare your relationship to others, but surely it can’t be that wrong to try and mirror a model relationship like Will and Jada’s? Besides we can all learn from other people’s experiences and save our selves a lot of heartache.

Have you ever asked yourself ‘what’s their secret?’ I know I have. Is it wealth; good looks or talent that makes these couples a force to be reckoned with? Another key question which pops into my head from time to time is, ‘what makes

them last?’ Don’t get me wrong, we’re all different and unique, so there is no way one set of relationship rules could apply to us all. There is however certain etiquettes that we can learn to help our relationships grow.

I can probably guess what you’re thinking. What about LOVE? (Two hundred or so words deep and she hasn't even mentioned the word…)

Well that’s because love alone simply isn’t enough. The secret to a lasting relationship is commitment and hard work. Unfortunately love only gets you through the honeymoon phase.

The secret to any ‘happily ever after’ story is, learning to cope when the hearts and flowers disappear.

Luckily for you guys I’ve come up with a simple (yet effective) list to help you survive the post honeymoon period.

1. Communication.

Communication is key to every good relationship. How many times

have you heard that one right? Well it’s true. Don’t assume your other half is a mind reader or ‘knows you well enough’ always let your feelings/views be heard. This is best way to ensure that they are understood and respected. A big part of communication is also listening and understanding what’s being said. So learn to talk less when appropriate.

2. Arguments. Every

couple argues. If you don’t there is something seriously wrong with you.

They can be prevented (sometimes) but sooner or later you will argue about everything from sex to whose turn it is to make the dinner. When it comes to arguments I say it’s always better out than in. Don’t take things too seriously because chances are you won’t actually remember what it is you were arguing about.

3. Sex. When it comes to sex

it’s either good or bad. Anything in between is basically bad. Boring sex is very bad so don’t let it get too predictable. Sex is supposed to be fun and spontaneous not a chore to attend to at least once a week. Try new things (together) and don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. The longer you’re together, the better you’ll understand that freaky sex is always good sex.

4. MONEY. If you have

it, great! Just be wise with it. If you don’t have money or are experiencing financial difficulties, remember to work as a team. The worst feeling in the world is being broke and alone. Always keep your money separate. Not because you shouldn’t trust your other half, but rather to ensure one of you has

something saved for a rainy day.

You’re only a power couple if you both get money. Don’t depend on one party to be the breadwinner.

5. CHASE YOUR DREAMS. The most

damaging factor to any relationship isn’t infidelity it’s resentment. Power couples are great individuals who join forces. Remember to chase your own dreams first and let them chase theirs.

6. RELATIVES/ FRIENDS.This is a really

tricky one. It’s human nature for us to vent, and it’s more than likely that the person we turn to is a loved one. Just be mindful of what you say about your partner/relationship when venting. What you’re feeling might just be in the moment and it’s a lot harder for the third party to forgive and forget.

7. SOCIAL MEDIA.

. I reckon I could write an essay on the disadvantages of social media relationships. There is nothing good about posting your relationship status, business, issues or whatever on Facebook. It’s CRINGE, you’re giving people a front row seat to your private life and it makes all the

Airing your business out in public only puts a strain on your relationship so don’t do it. Some people don’t even have their other half on social media so really you’re expressing your undying love to your followers, which is kind of creepy.

8. COMPROMISE.

Most relationships don’t make it past the honeymoon stage because people are not willing to compromise. Compromising is not about changing yourself for someone else, it’s about meeting in the middle for a bigger goal/ purpose. People change and so do situations. Don’t get too stuck in your own ways or you’ll get left behind.

9. LET SLEEPING DOGS DIE. We’re only

human, mistakes will be made.

However NO good can ever come from bringing up the past. If you’ve chosen to forgive, learn to forget.

10. TRUST. Last but

definitely not least, trust. I cannot stress how essential trust is in a relationship. Not just trusting your partner won’t let you down or hurt you; but also trusting yourself enough not to do the same. Once the trust is broken things can get very difficult but if you can overcome this you can pretty much face anything.

What is it about a sexually liberated female that gets people talking? Why is it okay for a man to have more than one partner (sometimes at the same time) but not okay for women? We glorify a man who is (sexually) experienced but a woman with a past is deemed as ‘damaged goods’.

There’s no arguing that sex in a relationship plays an important role. What isn’t clear, is why there is so much concern surrounding single women and sex.

The prevalent usage of the term Milf (Mother I’d Like to F***) indicates a slight change in societal views; but how accepting are we of mothers who dare to be sexy?

There’s a difference between wanting to feel sexy and sleeping around. Wearing revealing clothing is not synonymous with being a whore, but for many of us that’s just how we see it.

Are men and women really equal? If you’ve answered no or ‘to an extent’; this signifies the root of the problem. All females (above the age of consent) should be able to use their sexual freedom as they please without being judged or labelled.

Long gone are the days of prosex feminism. An early 1980s movement which believed that

sexual liberation was an essential part of a woman’s freedom.

Opinions are no longer only divided between the sexes. As I just pointed out with my own views; women can’t seem to agree on the topic either. Contrary to feminist beliefs of exploitation; some women boast complete control of their bodies and decisions as sexual beings. Some women even use their bodies for material gain.

CONSENT: AN ATTEMPT TO DEBUNK THE MYTHS The National Students’ Union (NUS) Women’s Campaign has teamed up with Sexpression UK, to increase the accessibility to information about relationships and sex.

It is perhaps logical to educate, or rather re-educate, the population on what consent is through educational establishments themselves.

Consent - defined in painfully simplistic terms - is the act of giving permission to carry out a subsequent act.

Yet the term and concept have been manipulated by “lad culture” in universities and a rape culture that permeates through the media into mainstream society. The gradual misconstruing of the word has been the root of the myths that must be detangled in order to establish what does and what does not constitute a ‘yes’.

This partnership has seen immense amounts of national success simply by opening up a dialogue that previously bordered on taboo. Entitled the ‘I Heart Consent’ campaign, this nationwide initiative has made its way into multiple university campuses.

However, as is the case with almost any social awareness campaign, critics were quick to denounce our attempts to dissipate the myths. When promoting Lancaster University’s Consent Week event on Twitter, I was approached by a critic who highlighted that raising awareness about consent was not the ‘cure’ for rape but after my rather reserved reply in which I emphasised that there were misunderstandings surrounding consent, this Twitter user proceeded to tell me that it is simply a case of ‘lots of people having drunk sex they regret.’ I have to tip my hat to him for being the perfect example of why we need to re-educate, and actually recontextualise, what consent is.

Drunk consent is not consent for the primary reason that the person concerned is not sober, and therefore not in the correct mindset to consent.

Needless to say, this ideology applies to drug usage too. However, How can we possibly re-establish the true meaning of healthy, consensual sex when our social context itself is littered with such juxtapositions?

Hopefully this campaign can open up a healthier dialogue.

Manage your priorities

You just have to accept that your day will not always go to plan, which is why we have to be ready to reprioritise. To save time in the work day make a to-do list at home. It’s important to have two sections, urgent and important. When it comes to unplanned changes, you will have to make a decision on which tasks are pushed back of the queue.

Allow your brain to slow down

By switching from multitasking to just focusing on one thing at a time helps slow the brain. Focusing on one task will help you in the long run as it will avoid twice as many mistakes you may have made through balancing several tasks at once. It will also make you feel more relaxed and in control.

Get your email inbox under control

Emails are the biggest way to communicate as they are almost an immediate response. But that doesn’t mean you have to immediately respond. Go through the list and move emails to a ‘to-do’ file that needs more thought and any events quickly note in your calendar.

Organising your emails will help make you prioritise any future work.

Make it easy to get yourself started – Instead of trying to tackle a massive project, or several all at once, try to break it down into chucks.

Working in little bits can actually help speed up the process.

THE SCARY SIDE OF

UBER

The Indian government have banned the app-based car service, Uber, after the sexual assault of a female passenger by an Uber driver, who was previously accused of rape, late last year. This move on part of the authorities shows an attempt to mask the more serious issue of a rape epidemic that is pervading the Indian society. Words : Yashi Banymadhub

ntil this recent attack on a 26 year old woman, Uber was deemed the safest means of transport for women and as the most popular means of public transport amongst women. It was even described by the New York Times as a company that was ‘a greater friend of the urban women in India than the government ever was.’

This isn’t saying much when you consider the lack of action by authorities to tackle sexual harassment. For instance, banning car services have made matters worse by leaving women with less transport options.

For example, The New York Times has revealed that despite the fact that Uber conducts background checks, this can easily be avoided with a bribe of under $10, meaning that the safety of women is compromised when they are driven around by potential criminals.

Although more people have been raising their voice to oppose sexual assault since the 2012 Delhi gang rape of a medical student; The Safe Cities Delhi Programme has revealed that 92% of women are reported to feel unsafe in public areas which shows that by turning a blind eye to the concerns of the majority of its women, the Indian government is no less of an accomplice to sexual predators that seek to degrade and destroy the lives of Indian women.
