Sailing Seven SeaS A History of the Canadian Pacific Line

SAILING SEVEN SEAS

A History of the Canadian Pacific Line by Peter Pigott 978-1-55488-765-1 256 pages, hardcover 6 x 9, 150 x 230 mm 34 b&w and colour illustrations in two 8-page inserts, tables, bibliography, index $35.00 £20.00 History November

Peter Pigott Under Canadian Pacific’s red-and-white-checkered flag, the company’s founders, George Stephen and William C. Van Horne, created a rail-sea service from Liverpool to Hong Kong. Boasting sternwheelers, Great Lakes bulk carriers, ferries, and luxurious ocean-going liner leviathans, the Canadian Pacific shipping line sailed around the globe. In both world wars the entire fleet served gallantly as Allied troop carriers. After the Second World War, the company staved off the realities of the jet age for as long as it could, replacing liners with container ships, until what was left of the legendary maritime operation was sold off in 2005. With a witty and informative style, author Peter Pigott evokes not only the nostalgic heyday of ocean travel but reveals a slice of almost-forgotten Canadiana. From the stifling steerage quarters of immigrant ships to the elegant drawing rooms of nautical titans such as the ill-fated Empress of Ireland and the Empress of Asia, from U-boat-haunted convoys to container ships, shore dwellers and old salts alike will be delighted with Sailing Seven Seas. Peter Pigott is the author of 15 previous books, including the bestselling Canada in Afghanistan and Canada in Sudan. A well-known aviation writer, he has also published Wings Across Canada: An Illustrated History of Canadian Aviation and Wingwalkers: The Rise and Fall of Canada’s Other Airline. He lives in Ottawa.

This selection of writings by 29 women, known and unknown, professional and amateur, presents a unique portrait of Canada through time and space, from the 17th to the early 20th century, from the Maritimes to British Columbia and the Far North. There is a range of voices from high-born wives of governors general, to an Icelandic immigrant and a fisherman’s wife in Labrador. A Loyalist wife and mother describes the first hard weather in New Brunswick, a seasick nun tells of a dangerous voyage out from France, a famous children’s writer writes home about the fun of canoeing, and a German general’s wife describes habitant customs. All demonstrate how women’s experiences not only shared but helped shape this new country. Mary Alice Downie has written and edited 28 books for children and adults. Her many books include And Some Brought Flowers with Mary Hamilton, and The WellFilled Cupboard with Barbara Robertson. She lives in Kingston, Ontario. Barbara Robertson, now deceased, earned degrees in history from the University of  Toronto and Queen’s University. She was also the author of Wilfrid Laurier: and co-editor of Ottawa at War.

NO LACK OF COURAGE Operation Medusa, Afghanistan

No Lack of Courage is the story of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s first battle. It is a revealing account of Operation Medusa, the largely Canadian action from September 1 to 17, 2006, to dislodge a heavily entrenched Taliban force in the Pashmul district of Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province. At stake, according to senior Afghan politicians and NATO military commanders, was nothing less than the very existence of the reconstituted state of Afghanistan, as well as the NATO alliance itself. In a bitterly fought conflict that lasted more than two weeks, Canadian, Afghan, and Coalition troops defeated the dug-in enemy forces Fortune Favours the Brave and chased them from the Pashmul area. 978-1-55002-841-6 $35.00 £20.00 In the end, the brunt of the fighting fell on the Canadians, and the operation that saved Afghanistan exacted a great cost. However, the battle also demonstrated that Canada had shed its peacekeeping mythology and was once more ready to commit troops deliberately to combat. Moreover, it revealed yet again that Canadian soldiers have no lack of courage.

Colonel Bernd Horn, an experienced Canadian Forces infantry officer, is currently chief of staff of the Land Forces Development and Training System. Dr. Horn is also an adjunct professor of history at the Royal Military College and has authored, co-authored, or edited 28 books. Some of his recent publications Show No Fear are Establishing a Legacy and The Military Leadership Handbook. He lives in 978-1-55002-816-4 Kingston, Ontario. $35.00 £18.00 4

By the same authors: Royal Tours 1786–2010 is a penetrating look at the tours of 11 royals who were or would be monarchs, viceroys, and commanders-in-chief of Canada. Leaving California in 1983 to tour British Columbia, Queen Elizabeth II said she was “going home to Canada.” Since its pioneer days, the Royal Family has made the country home through tours of public service, naval and military duty, and residence. Beautifully illustrated, featuring photos from the June/July 2010 tour of the queen, Royal Tours 1786–2010 is a captivating look at how these tours shaped Canada and the royals themselves, with an eye for the significant, interesting, and humorous. Included are the young naval captain who became King William IV, Queen and Consort: Elizabeth and Philip the long Canadian residences of Queen Victoria’s father and daughter, those who 978-1-55002-725-9 would be kings and governors general, the triumph of the first reigning monarch’s $30.00 £15.00 tour, and the current queen’s six decades of regular presence. James Fitzjames was a Royal Naval hero of the early 19th century. A lively man with a wicked sense of humour, he joined the Franklin Expedition at the age of 32 — and never returned. But he packed more into those 32 years than most people do in a lifetime. He sailed iron paddle-steamers down the Euphrates River in 1835–36 and fought with conspicuous bravery in wars in Syria and China. But Fitzjames wasn’t what he seemed. He concealed several secrets, including the scandal of his birth, the source of his influence, and his plans for what to do after the Franklin Expedition. The author strips away 200 years of misinformation and half-truths to enable us to understand, for the first time, Fitzjames and his significance for the Franklin Expedition. It is also a great portrait of an attractive and brave character who doesn’t deserve obscurity. William Battersby is an investment manager who has been researching the Franklin Expedition for many years. He is the author of an article on the lead poisoning suffered by its members in the Journal of the Hakluyt Society. Battersby lives in London, England.

Toronto’s Military Legacy aldona sendzikas Stanley Barracks begins with the construction in 1840–41 of the new facility that replaced the then decaying Fort York Barracks. The book recounts the background of the last facility operated by the British military in Toronto and how Canada’s own Permanent Force was developed. During the course of the stories told in this history, we learn about Canadian participation in war, including the two world wars and the barracks’ use as an internment camp for “enemy aliens”; civil-military relations as Toronto’s expansion encroached on the lands and buildings of the barracks; the establishment and growth of Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition; the struggles and discrimination faced by immigrants in Canada in wartime; the employment of the barracks as emergency housing during Toronto’s post-war housing shortage; and the origins of Canada’s famed Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In short, Stanley Barracks is the story of Toronto. Aldona Sendzikas was formerly the assistant curator at Historic Fort York, and during that time became very familiar with Toronto’s military history. Currently, she teaches military history, among other history courses, at the University of Western Ontario. She lives in London, Ontario.

Victor Feldbrill is an account of the life and cultural contribution of one of Canada’s most talented conductors. Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at 18. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast. Walter Pitman has been a federal MP and an Ontario MLA, president of Ryerson University, and director of the Ontario Arts Council. He is a Member of the Order of Ontario; an Officer of the Order of Canada; and the author of Elmer Iseler, Music Makers, and Louis Applebaum. Currently, he lives in Toronto.

Written with his son, David, Lifting the Silence is also a father-and-son journey of discovery that uncovers a remarkable letter that serves as testament to what still defines Canada today. Postmarked “France August 1946,” the fragile letter bares the soul of a people beaten down by cruel times and extols their admiration and gratitude for Canada as a nation of spiritual and economic resources that helped them out so much during the war. The letter closes with a heartfelt expression of hope to once again receive the downed pilot they had sheltered in 1942 in an atmosphere of peace.

Q U E S T

B I O G R A P H Y

Tom Thomson (1877–1917) occupies a prominent position in Canada’s national culture and has become a celebrated icon for his magnificent landscapes as well as for his brief life and mysterious death. The shy, enigmatic artist and woodsman’s innovative painting style produced such seminal Canadian images as The Jack Pine and The West Wind, while his untimely drowning nearly a century ago is still a popular subject of fierce debate. Originally a commercial artist, Thomson fell in love with the forests and lakes of Ontario’s Algonquin Park and devoted himself to rendering the north country’s changing seasons in a series of colourful sketches and canvases. Dividing his time between his beloved wilderness and a shack behind the Studio Building near downtown Toronto, Thomson was a major inspiration to his painter friends who, not long after his death, went on to change the course of Canadian art as the influential — and equally controversial — Group of Seven.

Crime and Punishment in Upper Canada provides genealogists and social historians with context and tools to locate sources on criminal activity and its consequences for the Upper Canada period (1791–1841) of Ontario’s history. Illustrative examples further aid researchers in this era of the province’s past, which is notoriously difficult to investigate due to the paucity of records and indexes. An entertaining, educational read, the book features chapters with detailed inventories of available records in federal, provincial, and local repositories; published transcripts and indexes; online transcripts and indices; and suggestions for additional reading. The book also contains engravings (jails and courthouses, public hangings, judges), maps (indicating locations of jails, jurisdictions), charts (for statistics such as frequencies of different kinds of offences), and document examples (court minutes, jail registers, newspaper reports, et cetera), while case studies demonstrate the use and relevance of various records. Many family researchers with Ontario roots discover they have ancestors who were teachers. Those with no teachers in the family may have ancestors who were part of the Ontario education system as students. Education and Ontario Family History outlines the resources available for education from about 1785 to the early 20th century, not only for genealogists but also for other historians with an interest in educational records. Many historical resources are currently being digitized, and Ontario and education are no exceptions. No wonder late Victorians valued the steamship and the Suez Canal. What difference did the inventions of the telephone or steam engine make to our ancestors’ lives? Do you know what a rod or a chain is and what they measured? Time Traveller’s Handbook considers documents and how to look at papers and artifacts that have survived over the years, as well as those family legends and “mythinformation” handed down by word of mouth. This sort of information can be found on the Internet — somewhere — but the researcher can waste a lot of time hunting for it. In an entertaining yet useful manner, Time Traveller’s Handbook brings together for family historians a lot of facts our ancestors once knew, took for granted, and used regularly. Althea Douglas has written numerous articles on genealogy, Canadian local history, and heritage conservation. Her previous books include Tools of the Trade for Canadian Genealogists, Help! I’ve Inherited an Attic Full of History, and Here Be Dragons: Navigational Hazards for the Canadian Family Researcher. She lives in Ottawa.

Canada’s Heritage Celebrations Dorothy Duncan

By the same author:

Feasting and Fasting is an introduction to the foods and beverages that were a central part of how our ancestors celebrated important events. Long before the arrival of newcomers, the First Nations were celebrating the passages of life, the changing seasons, and the gifts of the Great Spirit with feasting. As settlers from around the world arrived on Canada’s shores, they brought with them the memories and traditions from home. Diverse and unique culinary histories began to develop as the newcomers were unable to find some of their traditional ingredients and were forced to compromise. Wild game, fruit, plants, grains, vegetables, and maple sugar were often transformed from survival foods to the foods of celebration. Food brought families and communities together to pay tribute, to honour, to celebrate, to mourn, and to be comforted. This is a sampling of their events and what was on their tables at births, weddings, funerals, religious holidays, garden parties, and more! Dorothy Duncan has worked with organizations across Canada and around the world to ensure that Canada’s culinary history is recognized, researched, and recorded. In 2007 her book Canadians at Table won the Cuisine Canada and University of Guelph Culinary Book Gold Award. Nothing More Comforting, Dorothy’s first book for Dundurn, was published in 2003 to wide acclaim.

DYNASTIES and INTERLUDES PAST AND PRESENT IN CANADIAN ELECTORAL POLITICS

October LAWRENCE LEDUC | JON H. PAMMETT | JUDITH I. MCKENZIE | ANDRÉ TURCOTTE

Dynasties and Interludes provides a comprehensive and unique overview of elections and voting in Canada from Confederation to the recent spate of minority governments. Its principal argument is that the Canadian political landscape has consisted of long periods of hegemony of a single party and/or leader (dynasties), punctuated by short, sharp disruptions brought about by the sudden rise of new parties, leaders, or social movements (interludes).

By the same authors:

Changes in the composition of the electorate and in the technology and professionalization of election campaigns are also examined in this book, both to provide a better understanding of key turning points in Canadian history and a deeper interpretation of present-day electoral politics. Lawrence LeDuc is a political science professor at the University of Toronto and is the co-author of Absent Mandate and Political Choice in Canada. Jon H. Pammett is a political science professor at Ottawa’s Carleton University and is the co-editor of several studies of Canadian elections, including, most recently, The Canadian Federal Election of 2008.

Of related interest: When President Barack Obama sat at his desk for the first time in the Oval Office in January 2009, one of the farthest things from his mind was Canada. On Capitol Hill the whirling pursuit of interests was intense. In Ottawa, Canada’s senior officials were too preoccupied to appreciate that the nation’s neighbours to the south weren’t paying attention to the affairs and concerns of the Great White North. Canada’s relations with the United States are broad and deep, and with Obama in the White House, the two countries are about to enter what could be a new era of hope and renewal. From water and energy policy to defence, environmental strategy, and Arctic sovereignty, author David Dyment provides an astute, pithy analysis of the past, present, and future continental dance between two countries that have much in common yet often step on each other’s feet.

d Miriam Newho use and Peter Mes saline

The Actor’s Survival Kit is required reading in Canadian theatre schools and is a constant resource for its many readers across the country. This fifth edition gives actors fresh research from today’s experience, new lists of Canada-wide contacts, and input from success stories. It speaks to a new generation of artists, giving them an up-to-date guide to the business of acting.

By the same author:

The book addresses a range of new issues: performer websites, video selfproduction, and sending résumés and networking on the Internet. It also takes a fresh look at old ones: agents, self-promotion, and work opportunities for women and minorities. The authors learn by constantly talking to emerging artists about the problems they face in the business in Canada. Often those conversations begin with, “You wrote the book!” The authors are still receiving thanks from grateful artists who have been guided by this irreplaceable book over the years. Miriam Newhouse has acted in and directed theatre worldwide and across Canada. She has appeared in film, radio, and television and is the labour cochair of the Ontario Advisory Committee for Health and Safety in the Live Performing Arts.

Twenty Greatest Hockey Goals ERIC ZWEIG

Every hockey fan remembers certain goals scored that stand out from all others. But if one had to name just 20 as the greatest ever accomplished, what would they be? There’s Paul Henderson’s third game-winning goal in 1972, the one that clinched the Summit Series for Canada against the Soviet Union. Also Mike Eruzione’s upset “Miracle on Ice” winner for the United States against the Soviets at Lake Placid in 1980. And don’t forget the famous Stanley Cup winners by the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Bill Barilko in 1951 and the Boston Bruins’ Bobby Orr in 1970. From the goal by the Montreal Victorias against the Winnipeg Victorias in the 1896 Stanley Cup rematch that truly made hockey’s most famous hardware a national event, to Wayne Gretzky’s 77th goal in 1982 that beat Phil Esposito’s single-season record for goals, to Sidney Crosby’s “golden goal” in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Zweig serves up a slice of exceptional hockey moments that’s sure to provoke heated discussion. Eric Zweig is a managing editor with Dan Diamond & Associates, consulting publisher to the National Hockey League. His books include Fever Season, Tough Guys: Hockey Rivals in Times of War and Disaster, Crazy Canucks: The Uphill Battle of Canada’s Downhill Ski Team, and Star Power: The Legend and Lore of Cyclone Taylor. He lives in Owen Sound, Ontario.

Because of these historical facts, Newfoundland and Labrador has tales of the supernatural that date back centuries, to a time before Canada even existed as a nation. Here the ghosts not only lurk in old houses and forlorn cemeteries, they come up out of the sea to walk the decks of ships before the eyes of terrified crewmen. They lament out on the ice where 77 men perished in the Newfoundland Sealing Disaster of 1914. And in St. John’s the courthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of Catherine Snow, who was hanged in 1834 for the murder of her husband. Edward Butts is the author of numerous books, including Murder, Line of Fire, Running with Dillinger, True Canadian Unsolved Mysteries, and The Desperate Ones, which was nominated for the Arthur Ellis Award. By the same author: Who committed Toronto’s Silk Stocking Murder? Why did a quiet accountant in Guelph, Ontario, murder his wife and two daughters? When did police in Alberta hire a self-styled mind reader to solve a mass murder? How did an American confidence man from Arizona find himself facing a murder charge in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia? These questions and more are answered in Murder: Twelve True Stories of Homicide in Canada, the latest collection of thrilling true Canadian crime stories by Edward Butts. The keenly researched chapters tell the stories behind some of Canada’s most fascinating murder cases, from colonial times to the 20th century, and from the Atlantic provinces, to the West Coast, and up to the Arctic. You’ll meet John Paul Radelmuller, the Gibraltar Point lighthouse keeper whose murder remains an unsolved mystery; wife-killer Dr. William Henry King; and Sinnisiak and Uluksuk, Inuit hunters whose trial for the murder of two priests became a national sensation. Butts also profiles the investigators who tracked the killers down, and in some cases sent them to the gallows in this collection of true tales that range from shocking and macabre to downright weird. by Mazo de la Roche 978-1-55488-793-4 296 pages, paper 6 x 9, 150 x 230 mm $24.99, £14.99 Fiction December

In Renny’s Daughter, Adeline Whiteoak is voyaging overseas. It is now 1948, and she travels with her Uncle Finch and cousin Maurice to Ireland and then London. On the ship she meets a charming Irishman and falls in love. However, when scandal breaks, she embodies her namesake and refuses to give him up. Meanwhile, back home, Jalna’s peace and beauty is threatened by a neighbour’s speculative designs.

In Variable Winds at Jalna, the immediate sequel to Renny’s Daughter, Maitland Fitzturgis and his sister, Sylvia Fleming, travel from Ireland for his official acceptance by the family as Adeline’s husband. Finch and Maurice also return, and Maurice brings with him his own problematic affairs of the heart. It quickly becomes one of the most fateful years that Jalna has known, and the story ends with more than one peal of the wedding bells.

Mazo de la Roche, in 1927, was an impoverished writer in Toronto when she won a $10,000 prize from The Atlantic Monthly for her novel Jalna. The book became an immediate bestseller and was eventually adapted for stage, screen, and television.

GREGOR ROBINSON

Returning to Ontario’s Muskoka region as an adult to bury his father, Ray Carrier is taken back not only to a tangled romance in that green paradise but also to the woods and lonesome swamps that haunted his teenage dreams. As a young man, Ray was enchanted by the grace and privilege of the American Miller family on Providence Island, the resort community up the road from the farm where Ray and his widowed father spent their summers in the 1960s. Ray’s father had always said that he was too impressed by money. But it was more than that. There was Quentin Miller, a beautiful girl a bit older than Ray who thought nothing of strolling to the end of a dock, stripping naked, and diving into the lake.

By the same author:

But something happened near the abandoned railway tracks long ago that added death to the equation of love and money. And now something has to be settled before Ray can finally achieve peace and let go of Providence Island and the Millers once and for all. Gregor Robinson previously published a short story collection (The Dream King) and a novel (Hotel Paradiso) and has had plays produced at the Toronto Fringe in 2006 and 2009. He has been nominated for the Journey Prize three times and has had mystery stories nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Arthur Ellis Award, and the National Magazine Award. He lives in Toronto.

When Alice, an elderly woman, smells the coffee her husband Jules has just made, she gets up. This ritual repeats itself every day, until one morning she finds him lifeless on the sofa in the living room — the coffee hasn’t quite finished filtering through. While Jules slowly turns into a statue that seems to be carved out of marble, Alice reminisces about earlier days and tells him things she hasn’t dared or been able to express before. When subsequently she has to come to terms with the sorrow and loss she is faced with, David, the autistic young son of a woman who lives in the same apartment building, becomes part of this process in an unexpected way. This deeply moving Belgian novel has been translated into many languages. The German edition alone has sold over 120,000 copies. Diane Broeckhoven has written close to 30 books, which have earned her various awards and have been translated worldwide. De buitenkant van meneer Jules was published to great acclaim in 2001. THE SILENCE ON THE SHORE

Voyageur Classics Fiction February

HUGH GARNER INTRODUCTION BY GEORGE FETHERLING

Originally published in 1962, The Silence on the Shore is considered by many critics to be Hugh Garner’s best, most ambitious novel. Truly, in the person of Grace Hill, the landlady of the Toronto boarding house where most of the book’s events take place, Garner has created a fictional character never to be forgotten. Grace is a middle-aged snoop and an overweight nudist whose sexual release comes from watching wrestling matches at a hockey arena that is a thinly disguised Maple Leaf Gardens. By the same author:

Around Grace orbit her various boarders: alcoholic George Lightfoot; Walter Fowler, an aspiring writer whose marriage has just broken up; Aline Garfield, a fundamentalist Christian grappling with various urges and torments; a Polish refugee woman; and a colourful cast of others whose lives intersect in drama that arises from arbitrary or coincidental encounters. According to scholar John Moss, the book is “the best realistic novel of Canadian city life yet to be written.”

Storm Below 978-1-55488-456-8 $24.99 £14.99

Hugh Garner (1913–1979) immigrated to Canada in 1919, settling in Toronto. His most famous novel is Cabbagetown, released in its entirety in 1968. In 1963 he won the Governor General’s Award for Hugh Garner’s Best Stories. George Fetherling is a poet, fiction writer, and voyager. Among his many books are Travels by Night: A Memoir of the Sixties and Running Away to Sea: Round the World on a Tramp Freighter. He lives in Vancouver.

GREY OWL INTRODUCTION BY JAMES POLK

In 1931 Grey Owl published his first book, The Men of the Last Frontier, a work that is part memoir, part history of the vanishing wilderness in Canada, and part compendium of animal and First Nations tales and lore. A passionate, compelling appeal for the protection and preservation of the natural environment pervades Grey Owl’s words and makes his literary debut still ring with great relevance in the 21st century. By the 1920s, Canada’s outposts of adventure had been thrust farther and farther north to the remote margins of the country. Lumbermen, miners, and trappers invaded the primeval forests, seizing on nature’s wealth with soulless efficiency. Grey Owl himself fled before the assault as he witnessed his valleys polluted with sawmills, his hills dug up for hidden treasure, and wildlife, particularly his beloved beavers, exterminated for quick fortunes. Grey Owl (1888–1938), an Englishman, immigrated to Canada as Archibald Belaney in 1906 and quickly constructed an identity as a Native, assuming the Ojibwa name Wa-sha-quon-asin. He was world-renowned for his work as Canada’s pioneer conservationist and spread his message of preservation through multiple bestsellers, including Tales of an Empty Cabin and The Adventures of Sajo and Her Beaver People. James Polk has written on Grey Owl and other animal-story writers in articles, reviews, and a book, Wilderness Writers. The former editorial director of House of Anansi Press, he was publishing policy adviser in the Ontario government and is the author of a novel, short stories, and a play. He lives in Toronto.

DEAD LIGHT DISTRICT Jill Edmondson A Sasha Jackson

Mystery

As open-minded as she is, private investigator Sasha Jackson feels out of place when her latest case plunges her into the world of commercial sex. A classy madam has hired Sasha to find a missing Mexican hooker, which seems easy enough at first. However, everything becomes complicated when a nasty pimp turns up dead in the wrong hotel. Things get even worse when a spaced-out call girl, an arthritic old lady, and a Rastafarian pawnbroker enter the scene. Sasha figures out why the hooker ran away but not where to. How fast can anyone run in stiletto heels? When the next body turns up, Sasha has her moral compass tested as she tries to understand the sex trade and how those enmeshed in it will do anything to survive — even if it means murder.

Marc Garneau, Roberta Bondar, Julie Payette, Robert Thirsk, Chris Hadfield, and more recently, Guy Laliberté, the founder of Cirque de Soleil, all have one thing in common: they’re some of the very few Canadians who have been in space.

Canadians in Space 978-1-55002-940-6 $27.99 £15.99

The launch of a spaceship is terribly exciting. That’s why thousands of people come to watch. They laugh, cheer, and applaud as the rocket rises. They see the smoke, steam, and white-hot fire as millions of litres of fuel burn in seconds. They feel the chest-thumping impact of the sound. Then they stare upward for a long time until they can no longer see even a tiny speck in the distant sky. By that time, the craft is in space. Canada’s astronauts come from across the nation: from farms, cities, and little towns. They went to large schools and to small ones. Maple Leaf in Space showcases these amazing Canadians who have ventured off our planet and delivers some of the thrill of what that’s like. John Melady is a veteran writer and space enthusiast. He has written many books, including Canadians in Space, Star of Courage, Heartbreak and Heroism, and Pearson’s Prize. Melady lives in Seaforth, Ontario.

Jennifer Crump The summer of 1812 saw the beginning of one of the most brutal wars to take place on Canadian soil. With more than 1,600 people killed and a battlefront that extended from Halifax Harbour in Nova Scotia to the Columbia River in what is now British Columbia, the war featured many brave men and women who fended off much larger American forces. Canada on Fire is an exciting account of the War of 1812 as told through the stories of the heroes who helped to defend Canada, people such as Mohawk chief John Norton, who led a small army into battle against the wishes of his tribe, and Red George Macdonnell, who spent the war defending the St. Lawrence River. With descriptions of the battle at Lundy’s Lane, the adventures of the Sea Wolves, and the antics of James Fitzgibbon and his Bloody Boys, Canada on Fire reveals By the same author: the War of 1812 as it has seldom been seen. From 1906 to 1914, the Empress of Ireland, one of the fastest and most elegant liners of the Edwardian era, graced the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Remembered primarily for sinking in only 14 minutes in the St. Lawrence River and for having a greater loss of passenger life than the Titanic, the Empress’s true legacy is the significant role it played in the building of Canada. During the ship’s many crossings between Canada and England, it ferried royalty, politicians, scientists, authors, actors, captains of industry, and military servicemen aboard its decks, but most important, it carried more than 115,000 hopeful immigrants who left Europe to build new lives on Canadian soil. Into the Mist is the story of the Empress of Ireland, of the many people who walked its decks, and how, in the early morning of May 29, 1914, the great ship came to rest on the bottom of the St. Lawrence River. Anne Renaud’s previous books for young people include Pier 21: Stories from Near and Far, Island of Sorrow: The Story of Grosse Île, and A Bloom of Friendship: The Story of the Canadian Tulip Festival. Her books have been shortlisted for numerous honours, including the Silver Birch Award, the Red Maple Award, and the Red Cedar Award. She lives in Westmount, Quebec.
