For our 30th anniversary, we tried hard to come up with clever “Top 30” lists of our favorite or most important books. But no more than a parent is allowed to have a favorite child, we can’t, and don’t, have “favorite” books; they are all, at the expense of sounding like a cornered father finessing the question, our favorites. We came up with a host of objective ways to measure a book: most awarded, most translated, most reviewed, blogged, or “tweeted,” but these quickly proved irrelevant, too obscure, or too difficult to tally. So we fell back on that most tried and true list of the publishing business: our thirty best-selling titles, presented here in no particular order. We hope you have them all on your shelves and, if not, will fill in any missing space. 2

“I grew up in a place that nearly every visitor refers to as the ‘middle of nowhere.’ I take this as a compliment, but I am not always sure it is intended as such. Open spaces and nature is all that I knew for years. As I grew older I experienced cities, but it was often done with the appreciation of a six year old. To this day I find it wonderful to visit cities, to be part of the noises and colors that are resolved in a coordinated jumble—the steel, glass, and concrete making possible architects’dreams. However, I am always drawn back to the country” n ige l pea k e , from i n t h e w i ld s , for more information on this title, see page 16

“The Ortas’ work owes much to historical artistic practices. Their work is rooted in the ‘happenings’ of the 1960s, when artists such as Allan Kaprow, Jim Dine, and Red Grooms devised performances and events that engaged viewers as active participants in their work—whether on a literally physical level through built structures or more viscerally through movement, sound, and light—in an effort to stimulate both emotional and intellectual responses.” from t h e i n troduct ion by z o rya n, lucy + jorge orta . for more information on this title, see page 28

“With this book, I hope to share my appreciation and love for this work. Every mailing tube and carefully wrapped package of prints I received for this project offered an intimate view of its maker. I could see the evidence of time and energy poured into each print. I could feel the texture, the overprints, the accidents—the labor. . .You just can’t beat what happens when ink is laid down on paper: it smells good, it’s messy, and it takes some muscle.” mi k e pe r ry, from pu lle d . for more information on this title, see page 18

“Visual Complexity is a compact archive of an epoch, showcasing tendencies, methods, discoveries, and fragmented insights into the modus operandi of our contemporary society. With over seven hundred projects, the goal is to facilitate a critical understanding of different network visualization methods across the widest spectrum of knowledge domains. This vast repository, frequently referred to as a ‘map of maps’ and depicting an assortment of systems in subject areas as diverse as biology, social networks, and the Web, is the most complete and accessible chart of the field’s landscape.” m a n ue l lim a , from v i s ua l com ple x i t y. for more information on this title, see page 24

“The idea that I can craft my own camera, then use it to create amazing photos still seems, after all these years, too good to be true. Dissatisfied with the instant gratification of digital photography, I find that pinhole photography takes me down a longer, more involved, more engaging creative path. It requires me to be aware every step of the way, to trust that everything will, in the end, be alright. By trial and error, remarkable and unexpected things happen, as well as ‘mistakes.’ We are human and imperfect, and these truths, I believe, should be reflected in the art we create.” c h r i s k e e n ey, from pi n hole ca me r a s for more information on this title, see page 20

In the Wilds Drawings by Nigel Peake Nigel Peake In the Wilds is a collection of artist Nigel Peake’s hand-drawn observations of rural life. From the trees, fields, lakes, and rolling hills that define the country landscape, to the farm houses, tractors, fences, and telegraph poles that build it, Peake’s obsessively detailed pencil and ink drawings and beautifully muted watercolors capture the slow moving rhythm of his surroundings. In a time when everyone seems to be seeking relief from the fast pace of everyday life, In the Wilds offers an escape to a countryside as timeless as it is idyllic. • The author has produced work for high-profile companies such as Hermès, Eastpak, the Ninja Tune record label, the Royal Horticultural Society, and Dwell magazine • The illustrations were drawn just for this book • Like Gregory Blackstock (Blackstock’s Collections) Nigel Peake draws from memory • A visual poem about the glories of country living that makes a wonderful gift

Visual Complexity Mapping Patterns of Information Manuel Lima Our ability to generate information now far exceeds our capacity to understand it. Finding patterns and making meaningful connections inside complex data networks has emerged as one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century. In recent years, designers, researchers, and scientists have begun employing an innovative mix of colors, symbols, graphics, algorithms, and interactivity to clarify, and often beautify, the clutter. From representing networks of friends on Facebook to depicting interactions among proteins in a human cell, Visual Complexity presents one hundred of the most interesting examples of informationvisualization by the field’s leading practitioners. • The first book to integrate a thorough history of information-visualization, with an examination of the real-life situations in which it is used • Lima has been called the “Edward Tufte of the 21st century” and nominated as one of the “50 most creative and influential minds of 2009” by Creativity magazine • Features contributions by leading figures in the field including Lev Manovich, David McConville, Andrew Vande Moere, Eric Rodenbeck, and Nathan Yau • The related website (www.visualcomplexity.com) gets an average of 12,500 page loads a day

Web Typography Viviana Cordova Now more than ever, graphic designers need to embrace web and print together. Even though they are two different mediums, they have to work simultaneously to communicate the message. As time progresses we are likely to see more and more media migrate to the web; younger generations live on the web and graphic designers need to act now to codify new rules that will lead to better design online. Web Typography embraces these problems by proposing solutions, offering inspirational examples, and translating programming terms into graphic design terminology. • Fully illustrated with both diagrams and examples of existing websites • Web Typography was written from the ground up to provide instruction to those individuals aspiring to create web content

An interview by curator and critic Hou Hanru provides insight into the artists’ processes and motivations. • Includes texts by curators Zoe Ryan, Ellen Lupton, Judith Hoos Fox, and Ginger Gregg Duggan • Offers strategies that artists can use to communicate to audiences beyond the field of contemporary art • Lucy and Jorge Orta have exhibited work in a wide variety of locations across the world, including Antarctica and the Amazon rainforest as well as popular museums and art galleries • Will appeal not only to art lovers, but also to anyone interested in sustainable design and social issues

House in the Landscape Siting Your Home Naturally Jeremiah Eck Most homes built in the United States over the last fifty years were merely plopped down on a piece of land without any real integration of house and site. The result is a suburban sprawl of homes that are as uninspiring as they are environmentally unsustainable. House in the Landscape offers a viable alternative for landowners who want to build in a more thoughtful manner. Twenty-two houses by some of today’s bestknown residential architects illustrate nine site types from all over the United States. Each site, the issues it posed, the solutions the architects found, and the resulting house design are discussed and explained in detail, providing a wealth of siting information for the reader. • A valuable sourcebook for architects and new homebuilders alike • Projects by twenty leading residential architects including Bohlin Cywinski, Jackson, Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, the Miller|Hull Partnership, and Turnbull Griffin Haesloop • Features beautiful photographs of the sites and houses, site plans, floor plans, and elevations • Contains a section for nonarchitects explaining how to read and use a site plan

Matter in the Floating World Conversations with Leading Japanese Architects and Designers Blaine Brownell It can be argued that Japan contains a higher number of internationally significant architects and designers relative to its geographic size than anywhere else in the world. Japanese designers regularly implement radical experiments in new materials and building systems that successfully address imminent energy and resource challenges. These technological achievements are combined with an acute awareness of the ephemerality of existence, creating a rich dialogue between the concrete and the abstract. • Materials expert and architect Blaine Brownell traveled to the offices of twenty leading material and design innovators in Japan—including Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban, Kengo Kuma, and Kazuyo Sejima—to find the connections between materiality and transience in their work • The book presents a broad range of design ideas to non-Japanese audiences in an accessible and inspiring way • The dialogues in Matter in the Floating World are organized into four sections—lightness, atmosphere, flow, and emergence—that embody various approaches to materiality and evanescence in Japanese architecture and design • Brownell is the best-selling author of the Transmaterial series

The Mythic City Photographs of New York by Samuel H. Gottscho, 1925–1940 Donald Albrecht During the late 1920s and 1930s, as photography was establishing a firmer monopoly on the visual documentation of the built landscape, architectural photographer Samuel H. Gottscho created a nowclassic portrait of New York City as the quintessential modern metropolis. Silhouetting Manhattan’s new skyscrapers, celebrated buildings—such as the American Radiator Building and Rockefeller Center— and signature skyline with a vision uniquely his own, Gottscho carefully embraced the tenuous line between the documentary and the artistic in photography and shaped a New York City through his lens that was distinctly Gottscho, yet unquestionably New York City. • “Gottscho’s images record in gorgeous chiaroscuro the construction of landmarks that went up during the interwar years, including Rockefeller Center, the George Washington Bridge and an electrified Times Square.” —Metropolitan Home
NOW in paperback
• “[Gottscho captures] a kind of Woody Allen movie diorama of Manhattan, close to the real thing but also very much invented, with no evidence of the Depression or the raggedness of the city below its grandeur.” —The New York Times

We’ve published many books that we believe changed the face of architecture. For a variety of reasons, some of them have been unavailable for years, and as part of our 30th anniversary celebration, we’re bringing them back into print. All are highly sought-after and valuable, not only as collector’s items, but also for the revolutionary ideas they contain. We’re delighted to have them back, and offer you this chance to add them to your library now in case you missed them the first time around.

Animate Form When published in 1999, Animate Form, the first book on the work of architect Greg Lynn, literally pushed back the boundaries of architectural form. It inspired an entire generation of designers to think of architecture as elastic, malleable, and mutable, bounded only by imagination. Using high-end computer animation software, Lynn opened an entire new paradigm of thinking about and discussing architectural form, and, in the process, introduced an entire new vocabulary— blobs, bodies, hypersurfaces, and polysurfaces—to describe the biomorphic shapes he and his followers create. A highly sought after title, we are delighted to bring Animate Form back into print as one of the books from our 30-year history that changed the world of architecture. OneFiveFour Lebbeus Woods Lebbeus Woods is a true visionary, whose drawings are among the richest and passionate as any in the history of architecture. For his first monograph, OneFiveFour, Woods painstakingly drew a book of two-page spreads that weave text, architectural elements, math, and physics into a unique vision of a new humanism for the information age. The powerful immediacy of the art makes it one of the most influential books we have ever published. Critic Michael Sorkin says it best: “In the mesmerizing, astonishingly wrought images of Lebbeus Woods...we are plunged into unfamiliar territory, a world of architecture beginning again....His ever-expanding discourse of the almost impossible is an inspiration not just to build, but to think.” Shipping March 2011 — 7 × 10.5 in / 18 × 26.7 cm 136 pp / 100 b+w Paperback 978-0-910413-80-0 $24.95 / £16.99

Flesh Architectural Probes Diller + Scofidio Like all the work of architects Liz Diller + Ric Scofidio, Flesh is a set of contradictions and complexities. It is both a monograph of their work—the first ever on their art, architecture, and installations—but also not a traditional monograph. It is a both/and, neither/nor book-as-project noted at the time of its publication, in 1994, for its groundbreaking typography and not-toosubtle critique of architecture from within. Since its publication, Diller + Scofidio (now Diller Scofidio + Renfro ) have gone on to become among the world’s most famous architects, but the themes, concerns, and even forms that make them so celebrated today are all here in Flesh, along with its most radical proposition: that anything can be architecture, starting with this book, one of the most sought-after and valuable books in our library. The Architecture of Diplomacy Building America’s Embassies Revised Second Edition Jane C. Loeffler This acclaimed history of America’s overseas embassybuilding program is now available in paperback in a revised and expanded edition. Addressing the security concerns posed by embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, Jane C. Loeffler continues her clear and often charged story of how America presents itself abroad, trying to balance an open and welcoming political philosophy with increasing concern for security in a world beset by terrorism. The Architecture of Diplomacy will appeal to anybody interested in American history and the complicated issue of representing political power through building. • Combines new photography of recently completed embassies alongside vintage photographs of the heyday of American embassy architecture in the late 1950s • “Loeffler’s book is an indispensable contribution to understanding our current diplomatic problems and an invitation to think seriously about how to solve them.” —American Studies International • Noted architectural critic Ada Louise Huxtable says of this new edition, “This excellent book could not appear at a more important and timely moment, when the United States faces the dual challenge of building . . .”

Revolution of Forms Cuba’s Forgotten Art Schools Updated Edition John A. Loomis Prior to the publication of Revolution of Forms in 1999, few were aware that the most outstanding architectural achievement of the Cuban Revolution, the Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Art School), stood neglected just outside Havana. Three architects who aimed to reinvent architecture just as the revolution hoped to reinvent society were commissioned. However, before construction was completed, the school was subjected to an ideological attack that branded it as not in keeping with anti-revolutionary ideals. The organic complex of brick and terra-cotta Catalan-vaulted structures was abandoned, until the original publication of Revolution of Forms brought it to the attention of the world and swayed the Cuban government to commit to its restoration. This updated edition of the classic book adds a new preface, epilogue, and a revised chronology to the first edition’s numerous photographs, drawings, and interviews. • Historically significant work available again after more than decade • Recounts the clash of politics, culture, and revolution over a unique work of architecture • An opera (also called Revolution of Forms), based on the book and directed and designed by Robert Wilson, was performed at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami

Artpark 1974–1984 Sandra Q. Firmin, editor Artpark chronicles the seminal years of an innovative summer residency program during which a diverse group of artists created temporary public artworks in Lewiston, New York, against the dramatic vistas of the Niagara Gorge. Founded during a transitional period in contemporary art when many artists left their studios for alternative art spaces, Artpark successfully balanced a populist mission with the commissioning of some of the most compelling avant-garde art of its day. The first time in print, Artpark features color documentation of these site-specific and performance artworks both in the process of being created and the act of being experienced. • Features important works by celebrated artists including Vito Acconci, Laurie Anderson, Lynda Benglis, Chris Burden, James Casebere, Dale Chihuly, Agnes Denes, Nancy Holt, Allan Kaprow, Gordon Matta-Clark, Mary Miss, Ree Morton, Dennis Oppenheim, Martin Puryear, and Elyn Zimmerman • A primary source on 190s and 1980s American art • Artpark’s legacy informs much work being produced today by a new generation of artists making work that transcends traditional fine-art boundaries

Gateway Visions for an Urban National Park Alexander Brash, Jamie Hand, and Kate Orff, editors Gateway National Recreation Area is one of the most diverse and underused parks in the national park system. Spreading across the coastline of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and New Jersey, it includes wildlife estuaries, bird-nesting areas, salt marshes, historic military forts, beaches, and NYC’s first municipal airport, to name just a few of its exceptional features. It also contains sewage treatment plants, sewer outfalls, landfills, and acres upon acres of “black mayonnaise.” Due to neglect and misuse, this extraordinary natural and national resource is at risk. Ninety percent of the salt marshes in Jamaica Bay—one of the most biologically productive habitats in the region—will have disappeared by 2011. This book presents the collaborative efforts of the Van Alan Institute, the National Parks Conservation Association, and Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation to investigate and document the diverse ecology of the park and reenvision a more sustainable future for it. • Photo-essay by Laura McPhee (John McPhee’s daughter) • With an essay by Los Angeles Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne, and contributions by other notable writers • Detailed maps and renderings of visionary projects

Workbook The Official Catalog for Workshopping: An American Model for Architectural Practice Emily Abruzzo, editor The work shown at the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Biennale is vital and proactive, suggesting solutions, describing the possibilities of new techniques or technologies, or re-framing the problems of the city, and, in the process, defining a new model of architectural practice. From John Portman’s architectas-initiator model to cityLAB’s research-based, innovative community-driven proposals, these works seek to define their own problems, audiences, and missions. The can-do spirit of each of these projects echo the collaborative, team-based methodologies of 306090 Books, co-presenters of the U.S. Pavilion with Atlanta’s High Museum of Art. The impressive scale, reach, and beauty of the participants’ projects makes their ground-up formation all the more inspiring. • The projects presented in the book are both a reflection and an expansion of the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Biennale. The additional images, text, and background information are intended as a sourcebook for workshopping, and the activist spirit it proposes • The processes by which these team-based projects move forward exploit the new technologies of digital collaboration, of meeting over Google Talk and Skype to coordinate between collaborators, across disciplines, and between time zones

Architectural Lighting Designing with Light and Space Hervé Descottes with Cecilia Ramos Architectural Lighting, the latest addition to the Architecture Briefs series, provides both a critical approach to and a conceptual framework for understanding the application of lighting in the built environment. The key considerations of lighting design are illuminated through accessible texts and instructional diagrams. Six built projects provide readers with concrete examples of the ways in which these principles are applied. Short essays by architect Steven Holl, artist Sylvain Dubuisson, and landscape architect James Corner explore the role of lighting in defining spatial compositions. • Architecture Brief on a core aspect of design that is useful not only to architects, but also to engineers and stage/film designers • The author’s firm, L’Observatoire International, has worked on many high-profile projects with well-known architects, some of which are featured in the book (The High Line in New York City and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN) • An appendix section provides additional technical information regarding lighting design as well as a glossary of lighting terms

Young Architects 12: ReSource The Architectural League of New York The Architectural League Prize (formerly known as the Young Architects Forum) is an annual competition and series of lectures and exhibitions organized by the Architectural League and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. The Architectural League Prize was established to recognize specific works of high quality and to encourage the exchange of ideas among young people who might otherwise not have a forum. The competition theme, ReSource, created a basis for entrants to compose their portfolios and critically evaluate their work. This year’s committee posited that architectural practice relies on resources: disciplinary resources, such as theory and technique; physical resources, such as materials and production technologies; and practical resources, such as coordination planning, and financing. Winners include: • Abruzzo Bodziak Architects, based in Brooklyn, NY • Austin+Mergold, based in Philadelphia, PA, and Ithaca, NY • FAR frohn&rojas, based in Berlin, Germany; Santiago, Chile; and Los Angeles, CA • Bittertang, based in Guadalajara, Mexico and New York City

Now in its third decade, this award-winning series continues to build upon its legacy by promoting individual points of view with all of their raw and rough-edged spontaneity. In 1998 we published a hardcover volume collecting the first ten10 issues of Pamphlet Architecture. We are proud to present the next nine issues in the companion volume Pamphlet Architecture 11–20. Model Making Megan Werner The ancient craft of architectural model making may seem unnecessary in today’s age of digital renderings and virtual tours, but physical models remain a uniquely revealing and compelling tool for the architect. More forcefully than any other way of visualizing a building, models represent ideas, as opposed to images. The sensory impact of a physical model, its materiality, is an important step in the design process. Once an idea is materialized, it exists in the real world, and the real world reacts—with limitations or opportunities, which become clear through the process of making. A model not only allows the designer to explore freely while testing out specific ideas but also to advance and communicate his or her ideas effectively to others. • Presents the nuts and bolts of model making. In thirty-three “concept blocks,” Megan Werner explores a wide range of possible types including laser-scored acrylic models, basswood topography models, acidetched metal blocks, peeled paper blocks, 3D-print models, cement pour blocks, and many more • Includes handy appendices on materials, tools, and tips and techniques, as well as a glossary of design concepts

Wandering the Garden of Technology and Passion John Marx Architect Pierluigi Serraino, introduction by Chris I. Yessios John Marx is of the generation of design architects who witnessed their pencils morph into mouses and their drafting tables into computer desktops. Throughout this transition, he has maintained a remarkable aesthetic consistency in his architectural projects. Wandering the Garden of Technology and Passion is a study of digital design through Marx’s work. This beautifully illustrated book traces the professional path of an architect whose mastery of digital tools transformed his practice into a global player, but who still manages to hold on to the intimate qualities of a boutique practice. • A thoughtful discussion of the role of computer-aided rendering in architectural practice • A how-to for small firms aiming to work globally • Lush imagery of projects that allows the reader to compare renderings to the built form

“The Handy Book of Artistic Printing beautifully reproduces more than 150 examples of this lost and disparaged work, along with essays that contextualize the movement in the history of American printing. . . likely to inspire a nostalgia in art lovers.
