Amphion’s €10,000 “Mastering-Quality System” SoundStage Global Doug Schneider May 11, 2013
Amphion’s Anssi Hyvönen brings an interesting topic of discussion to every event in which he and his company participate in. For High End 2013 it was this: studio-quality sound for the home for a reasonable price and without much inconvenience.
Anssi says that it’s been a vision of his since he was 14, which was one of the reasons he started Amphion; however, for various reasons, the notion of studio-quality sound at home wasn’t possible back then. But that’s changed. Today, a computer-based system can play music files at the same sampling frequency and bit depth that studio engineers record music at (24-bit/192kHz usually, or even higher in same cases), so it’s now technically feasible to have a studio-like setup at home and hear exactly what the recording engineer heard. With that in mind, Anssi unveiled the €10,000 “mastering-quality system,” comprised of Amphion Two15 two-way monitors (€3600/pr.), a Lindell AmpX (€1599), an Antelope Zodiac Gold DAC-preamp with Voltikus power supply (€3595), €200 worth of cables, plus an Apple MacBook computer (his preference, but someone might obviously pick something else). The system’s sound seemed to impress everyone in the room, but Anssi was quick to point out that studio listening isn’t done in such a large space, and so far away from the system, with so many people. Instead, the order of the day at virtually every studio is nearfield listening by one or a few people. So he invited people to come closer to the speakers and listen to even better sound. After that, he pointed out that almost anyone can find a suitable space in any home for a nearfield setup -- even in the attic. All in all, this was one of the most convincing demos at High End 2013 and I could certainly see someone pursuing a system just like this if hearing exactly what those in the studio heard is their goal. Studio-quality sound in the home was once a dream, but is now a reality -- and for a fairly reasonable price. http://www.soundstageglobal.com/index.php/shows-events/high-end-2013-munich-germany/137-high-end2013-features/389-amphion-s-10-000-mastering-quality-system

Amphion Two15
May 12, 2013
I wasn’t really aware of what room I was walking into when I was confronted with an astonishingly simple, pure, articulate sound that really perked up my ears. Aha! Amphion, a Finnish company run by Anssi Hyvonen—why am I not surprised? Many years ago while searching for near-field monitors that would satisfy, I settled on two speakers that did it for me: the venerable Harbeth HL-P3ES-2, and the Amphion Ion—a dandy little two-way mini-monitor with a more modest approximately $1300/pair price tag. But the sound that so startled me walking into the room was something quite special. It’s not often you get to hear the playing of an original master tape, which in this case was Inga Rumpf’s “White Horses”—an all analog production recorded by Dirk Sommer of Sommelier du Son, released on the Edel Germany label. Wow! Words fail me...quite extraordinary. The system that sat between me and the recording—and managing to remain effortlessly invisible—started with the master tape being drawn through a Nagra IV-S at 15ips, followed by an Antelope Audio Zodiac Gold performing the preamp duties, then on to a Lindell Audio Amp-X, and finally arriving at the Amphion Two15 (€1500), a D’Appolito configured, relatively compact speaker. Here’s the salient tid-bit: these are the same speakers Dirk used to record, mix, and master the album. Quite the treat to literally hear a recording exactly as the recordist did in the making. The result was what I can only describe as an immaculately pure sound. Should you be in the market for some near-field speakers, you simply can’t proceed without auditioning some Harbeths—my long-time favorite near-field monitor maker—but I’ll add without hesitation, a session with some Amphions will likely provide an ear opening and somewhat faster-sounding alternative. You’ll find Amphion’s website here, the Two15 is so new it’s not on their website yet. http://www.stereophile.com/content/munich-high-end-2013 More information on free samples from this “Made with Amphion” recording available from http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue64/hfs1.htm

The super colourful Amphion room was a nice place to be. The sound was good and the display of the full range of colour options gave a very young and vibrant feel, one of the guys said I fitted in very well with my red hair and multi coloured dress!

Munich: A Few Of My Favorite Things Stereophile Michael Lavorgna May 13, 2013
Finland-based speaker manufacturer Amphion grabbed my attention with their display of very enticing limited edition versions of their Ion+ speakers but I was really drawn into their compelling story when listening to the simple â‚Ź10k setup featuring the Amphion Two15 professional monitors (â‚Ź1500/each), Lindell Audio AmpX, and the Antelope Audio Zodiac Gold DAC/Preamp. The desktop/near field strikes me as the new hi-fi frontier mainly because so many of us spend so much time in front of a computer monitor with terabyte-busting music collections of increasing quality. With speakers and systems like this Amphion-based rig, you can get exceptional near field performance without busting your bank account. http://www.stereophile.com/content/munich-few-my-favorite-things More information from http://www.amphion.fi/files/8813/6774/6823/Amphion_Pro_A4_ok_highres.pdf

Amphion Ion+ Limited Edition Audiostream Michael Lavorgna May 12, 2013
Amphion was showing off some colorful versions of their Ion+ speakers (€500/each) that were hand painted by Danish artist Kristian Hornsleth in a limited edition (€3,000/pair). For those looking to brighten up their listening environment with aural and visual art, these speakers fit the bill on both counts.
Amphion also enlisted the design expertise of Finnish firm Studio Halonen for another somewhat more subdued but equally interesting Ion+ limited edition (€2,000/pair). The Ion’s sport a 1” titanium tweeter and a 4.5” aluminium woofer and are rated at 50 - 25,000 Hz +/-3dB. http://www.audiostream.com/content/amphion-ion-limited-edition

Finnish Amphion showed their new pro-audio mastering models which not merely sport a d’Appolito array with central wave-guided tweeter but... ...passive radiators to improve the impulse response over ported alignments (€3.000/pr). The smaller €2.000/pr model with single mid/woofer gets a single passive radiator. Obviously pros aren’t the only ones allowed to purchase these. Expect a review of these in our pages.
Here is a slew of Ion+ models in various colors including custom artwork. It’s not just Italians who do style.
Igor Levin’s Antelope Audio with strong roots in the recording industry announced their €3.000 Zodiac Platinum to add DSD in 64x, 128x and 256x flavors. Like the existing Gold, there’s stepped analog volume with remote control, a plethora of i/o ports including analog, 64-bit reclocking and twin 6.3mm headphone sockets now with independent volume levels http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/munich2013/5.html
