ACHA at the Summer Leadership Summit
Summit Featured Informative Speakers
The 2014 Leadership Summit was held in Chicago, July 25-27. ACHA organized the conference in conjunction with the AIA’s Academy of Architecture for Health.
“Change” was the theme for the 2014 Summer Leadership Summit. SLS speakers echoed the need for change, in each of their presentations.
The opening session was at ACHA’s certificants luncheon. The presenter was Deborah Bowen, President and CEO of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Ms. Bowen spoke about the major changes occurring in healthcare and the need to “think outside the bed.” As hospitals are linked into health networks, a new array of patient care services will improve health outcomes. This will require “enterprise thinking” beyond just hospital care.
Pamela Peele, Chief Analytics Officer for UPMC’s Insurance Division, spoke on the topic of “Big Data.” Pamela Peele, Pamela Peele, Chief Analytics Providing one Chief Analytics of the most Officer, UPMC entertaining presentations of the conference, Ms. Peele referred to her healthcare analytics team as a “knowledge factory” pouring through claims data to locate patients at-risk for major medical problems. She spoke about the importance of uncovering Steve Executive VP hidden or “dark data” forLittleson, healthcare systems, hoping to manage their patient’s medical services and related costs. Ms Peele reminded the audience that “you can’t manage what you cannot see.”
To make her point, Ms. Bowen showed several case studies, including Palomar Health’s new hospital and facilities at Henry Ford Health System.

He reviewed CMS’s new reimbursement standards including value-based purchasing of medical services and the focus on readmission rates for Medicare patients. Patrick Charmel is President and CEO of Griffin Hospital, the first hospital built to Planetree standards and recipient of the 2014 ACHA Legacy Award. His presentation titled “Patient Centered Care: A Strategic Imperative in Healthcare’s New Era” compared per capita Littleson, SteveSteve Littleson, Executive VP of Meridian Health healthcare spending between the U.S. and other countries. Mr. Executive VP of Charmel’s talk focused on end of life care, moving from volume to Meridian Health value, and moving toward a long-term, preventative care model. Planetree’s model for Patient Centered Care made its first steps at Pacific Hospital in San Francisco through the work of pioneer Angelica Thieriot in the 1970’s. What started out with 13 patient rooms has now grown to include hospitals in 14 countries, touching the lives of patients, families, and staff.

2014 South Atlantic Regional Conference The fifth annual Chautauqua on Regional Healthcare Architecture, presented by the South Atlantic Region of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, was a huge success. Over 90 participants came together to listen and discuss the challenges that face hospitals in today’s era of “accountable” healthcare delivery. The all-day conference entitled Accountable Care Meets Accountable Design – Collaborating for Returns on Investment included a combination of excellent speakers that were all focused on proactive responses to the accountable care marketplace we all find ourselves in.

This led to more specific issues and concerns facing small practitioners and “in-house” hospital facilities architects, as opposed to large healthcare firms and specialized consultants. There will be follow-up discussions regarding these issues and those concerns and issues will then be submitted for ACHA review.

ACHA Certification Exam: New in 2015 Change is often a good thing. Healthcare is a constantly changing industry, and architects who serve healthcare clients must keep up with that pace. Every three to five years we go through the steps to validate the ACHA certification examination and ensure that it reflects the critical tasks performed by healthcare architects. This was the year to validate the exam and make changes. The College is in the final stages of a job analysis study to provide evidence as to the validity of the content outline used for the ACHA certification examination. A committee of 15 ACHA certificate holders created a draft content outline that is intended to be the basis of the certification examination. The content outline and examination will be updated after analyzing the input collected from a wide range of subject matter experts to validate the outline and comment about modifications. Thank you to each of you who participated in this process, whether on the committee or by completing the survey. Note: the examination will only be offered during one administration period in 2015, and it will be during the month of July at testing centers throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as at the Summer Leadership Summit in Chicago. Since the content outline for the examination has changed, examination scores and resulting statistics need to be reviewed to ensure that examination scores are accurate. In addition, ACHA will verify the accuracy of the passing scores for the examinations. Therefore, in 2015 candidates will not receive score information or pass-fail decisions on the day of the test. Final score reports should be mailed to candidates within six weeks of the conclusion of the examination window. More information will be available in the 2015 Candidate Handbook and on the website soon at www.healtharchitects.org.

President’s Message How I Spent the Summer Leadership Summit ... “Any ideas about what I should write about in the upcoming President’s column?” It was the last day of the Summer Leadership Summit, and Tib Tusler, FAIA, FACHA, and I were at the Midway Airport before boarding our Southwest flights home. What could we say about the ACHA activities that transpired at our summer meeting? That another hugely successful SLS had run its course and it had the adrenalin rush of riding the rapids of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho! We started on Thursday morning with the Academic Summit, filled with leaders in programs of Healthcare Architecture from Institutions of higher learning from across the country. They were very interested in how we were updating the entrance exam for our organization and were genuine in their desire to prepare their students for our exam. From there we went to our College Regents meeting, where we had scheduled a training session with a social media consultant. The purpose was to learn about social media types and determine which ones would be most effective in reaching out to younger members in our field – the 25 to 40 years old architects – and increasing their participation in the College. That evening, we had an interactive Board Dinner with members of the College Board, the Academy Board and the AIA Foundation Board. This provides an excellent opportunity to get to know all of the leaders of all of the facets of healthcare architecture in the United States. At 7:30 Friday morning, we began the committee meetings of the College, including those of the Past Presidents, the Advanced Education and Network Committee and others. At noon, we were delighted to hear from Deborah Bowen, the CEO of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The ACHE is an unbelievable organization that is both huge and extremely effective.
And then, right on time, we kicked off the Summer Leadership Summit. It was very well attended, and the Connie S. speakers were excellent. The Speakers McFarland Committee, chaired by Phil Tobey, FAIA, FACHA, may be the most effective working committee of any I have ever seen. Thank you, to everyone, including Joan Suchomel, AIA, ACHA, who is the real organizer of the event. And thanks to all of our sponsors who helped us keep the costs low for this top notch summit. The AIA Academy Foundation event was unbelievable on Friday night. We had free run of the entire Shedd Aquarium for the price of a small donation to the Foundation. ... What a magnificent way to help a worthy cause! Saturday morning, we began again at 7:00 a.m. and continued to hear from more speakers, with a panel concluding the event at 5:00 p.m. that afternoon. Sunday morning, our weekend ended with a well received tour of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Outpatient Care Pavilion. So, summer must be drawing to an end now that the SLS is over. And, as we write thank you notes to the fine list of speakers we had, we are reminded how fortunate we are that we have this successful venue where we can interface with all of our groups and partake of such high level education opportunities. Next year, the event is July 17-19, 2015 in Chicago. Put it on your calendars now, and do not miss the very best meeting of the year for healthcare architects.

ACHA’s Mobile Exam, Batting 1000% The first offering of ACHA’s “Mobile Exam” occurred in Chicago, at the Summer Leadership Summit. Four candidates took the exam, hoping to earn their board certificate in healthcare architecture. All four passed the exam. The computer-based test reports the candidates’ scores at the testing site. Congratulations to ACHA’s newest certificate holders: Mildred Baker, AIA, ACHA; Elizabeth Normand, AIA, ACHA; Aaron Shepard, AIA, ACHA; and Todd Wambach, AIA, ACHA.
