come to you having just returned from our Annual Conference in Las Vegas. It was an experience not soon forgotten during which we learned more about pediatric endocrinology and diabetes as novices, diabetes educators and advanced practice. We also found time to network with our colleagues and meet new members as well as first time attendees. We introduced for the first time this year the Nursing Excellence Awards. Our recipients this year were Rebecca Crespi for Excellence in Clinical Practice and Irena Hozjan for Excellence in Advanced Practice. I applaud these talented colleagues and look forward to our continued support of these awards at our next conference. Our conference was well planned this year under the leadership of Maryann Johnson, Conference Planning Chair, and her committee. Many thanks to them for bringing together premium topics and speakers in our field of expertise. Our Annual Conference does continue to be a great success and going into the future we will continue to offer those educational needs of our organization. I must also say that much work was accomplished by the Board of Directors prior to the start of our conference this year. Our newest board members, President Elect Nicole Kirouac, Treasurer Linda Burkett and Director Carol VanRyzin, participated with our current and outgoing board members in our strategic planning session which will bring us a realistic plan to follow for the future of our organization. There is more work to be done, and we will be sharing all with our membership once we have a final plan in place. As I returned from our conference, I felt energized and ready to share my knowledge with my daily working colleagues as well as take on the challenges ahead in our organization. I am humbled and honored to say the very least at those leaders that have come before me and I would be remiss if I did not thank Isabel Couto, our outgoing president, for all of her support this year as I have transitioned into my new role as president on the board. Her guidance has been priceless and has assisted in a smooth transition. I wish to continue to work with the board this year on providing more value to our current membership and increase our membership numbers. I wish to embrace the direction our organization needs to take to be the strongest it can be for our pediatric endocrinology community. Our knowledge and strength then benefits those patients and families that we care for each day. continued on page 2

“President’s Report” continued from page 1 I would also be remiss if I did not mention the contributions of our outgoing board members who worked tirelessly during their terms on changes needed and decisions that at times were difficult to make. I personally thank Mary Burr, our immediate Past President, Kathy Clark, Director, and Lee Ann Tincher, Treasurer. Our organization would not have been the same without their contributions during their time on the board. 2013-2014 President Catherine P. In addition, our organization would not be the same without our PENS staff supporting us and assisting us in making our organization stronger every day. Thanks to Jerrie Lynn Kind, Executive Director; Megan Finnell, Meeting Planner; Jody Shelton, Education Program Coordinator; and Mary Henderson, Administrative Assistant. These individuals keep us all on track and going forward; I feel very privileged to be working with them this next year as president. I vow that my goal this year is to increase our membership base to hopefully include our international colleagues, retain our current membership with adding value to our organization and embrace our growing membership of advanced practice nurses as well as diabetes educators. I will have the opportunity to work as the liaison to this year’s convention planning committee and look forward to working with Tammy Nenadovich and her committee to plan for our PENS conference in Louisville, Ky., May 14-17, 2014. As we go forward this year, I look at where we have been as an organization 26 years ago and where we are now. There is still work to be done and I welcome contact from our membership on your needs. I also look personally over the last 35 years of a career that has embraced pediatric endocrinology and diabetes with new eyes each time and with more to learn daily. I look to you our membership for guidance and where the future of PENS takes us all. I challenge you all to introduce a colleague to our organization, its benefits and value as well as what PENS means to you. Let’s work together to make this year the best it can be! My gratitude cannot be greater having this opportunity again within our organization to serve as your president… Respectfully submitted, Cathy

THE HIGHLIGHTS OF PENS LAS VEGAS 2013

e are several weeks past the 2013 Annual Conference, and I am still attempting to get back to my time zone. This year’s conference was a success and I believe that we can bend the rules on the saying “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” so here it goes. I would like to break down the highlights of the conference a bit differently:

E-Energy

filled each and every session. Our Keynote speaker Joe Solowiejczyk, RN, MSW, CDE, started it off! He is an amazing speaker who can energize and motivate anyone to take care of themselves. I do not have diabetes, and I would take my insulin and count my CHOs after listening to him. I must say that I have used a few of his techniques since returning and I think (hope) that I am making a difference.

N-Novice presenters amazed me! I can not tell you how

impressed that I am with each and every one of you. From posters to speakers…bravo!

D-Diabetes

was covered like a carbohydrate should be covered! Topics from family dynamics, management, DKA, camping, transitioning, developmental stages and the artificial pancreas!

O-Optimistic

that next year’s conference will bring us wonderful surprises with more nurse speakers and a diverse set of topics to choose from

L-Louisville, Kentucky, here we come: May 14-17, 2014 O-Outcomes. Improving our outcomes through attending

the conference; we are all striving for this. We as PENS members are constantly trying to improve our outcomes by educating ourselves, networking and researching the best strategies to provide the best care for our patients. Several presentations aimed specifically at improving the set outcomes for each patient such as DKA protocols, algorithms and research.

G-Growth-“The Assessment and Management of Growth Issues” was presented by our First President of PENS, Kathy Clark, RN, MSN, PNP-BC. This is a new CE program brought to us by PENS, the University of Nebraska College of Nursing and Scherer Clinical Communications. This program focused on growth and growth disorders for nurses and staff who work and care for pediatric patients with endocrine disorders.

location… Caesars Palace was magnificent…amazing location, amazing food and the sites are something I am still talking about!

conference…has no fear! All the networking is right at your fingertips! Remember to sign up for the e-Communities and we can continue to share our thoughts, case presentations and practice struggles throughout the year.

C-“Care of the Turner Patient: Clinical Care and Practice

A huge thank you to our Conference Planning Committee and all of your hard work! Looking forward to next year!

Guidelines” presentation and the “Development of the Online Modules for Intensive Insulin Dose Adjustment Education” poster were my top favorites of the conference!

R-Research,

what can we say? I know, let’s quote Zora Neale Hurston: “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.”

I-International experience…did you know that at this con-

ference we had nine attendees from outside the United States? I think this in itself was incredible!

N-Networking at its best! I am so excited to find out that

everyone else is also struggling with EMR. The electronic medical record will be the death of me and many others, per my conversations. In fact, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia had the right idea! It used the message board to say “Hey let’s share ideas, templates, flowsheets and progress notes.” This to me is what PENS is all about – sharing of knowledge to better serve our patients! www.pens.org

Letter From Your

Editor

I wanted to take this time to commission all members to speak up and let your voice be heard! I would love to hear from you. I welcome any articles, member news and ideas that you may have either for the “Reporter” or for the Website. As you all know, all of us on the Board of Directors are always looking for ways in which to improve our organization, but we need to hear from you. I completely understand the difficulties of our professional life as well our home life. As a full time NP in a very busy practice I am not certain which schedule is worse: the hospital or my four children and their sports. As your Editor, I am always in search of articles to be published in the “Reporter” or new ideas for the newsletter. This is your newsletter as a PENS member. What can we do to make it better for you? Please speak up and let me know what you would like to read about or see changed. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Lisa M. Davis, MSN, CNP
