Elderly individuals with strong social connections have lower levels of mortality, reduced suicide rates, less fear of crime, better physical health and have significantly higher levels of psychological well being (Kweon, Sullivan, and Wiley 1998).

This studio focused on the development of a complex housing program through design iteration and research. This health and wellbeing studio focused on employing people-centered values and evidence-based research to create a meaningful building. The general idea of this project is to provide an opportunity for the elderly in Bronzeville to age in place, to continue to live in the same area that they have lived in. Through our design, we wanted to promote a high quality of life through the promotion of physical and mental health, the opportunities for them to express their autonomy and independence, and to foster a meaningful sense of community through social interactions. To promote a sense of community we aimed to have neighborhood engagement, to be in a safe and welcoming area with other generations, and promote purposeful activities to establish strong social ties with one another.
