Foreword
The following pages are a collation of selected work during my three years at the University of Kent, studying to complete my RIBA Part 1. Each project exercises a different style of design and therefore showcases my diverse skillset. The projects are shown in chronological order as I grow and sculpt my design skills in education. Since I have recently completed my RIBA Part 1 Placement, I have included my work from practice. The final section of this portfolio presents my personal interests and transferrable skills which I constantly strive to better and that I pride myself in dearly. Once one understands Architecture is not merely the design and science of buildings, the possibilities are endless. I hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I did creating it thank you for your time and interest in my endeavours.

Caravanserai
Art Gallery Facility on Whitstable Beach Year 1 / Spring 2013 / Chris Gardener
7 of 60
The first full briefed project of my Academic years - Caravanserai challenged my inner budding architect in every aspect of the field. From my first site visit, on the historical beach of Whitstable, to expressing my artistic vision in architectural design as well as fine arts. The client required an art gallery space, complete with a temporary movable space and permanent exhibit - showcasing my personal artistic interests.
With the brief being vague, it provoked an insight into understanding the needs of the client and what would be beneficial to their vision. Overall, as the first full architectural exercise, it raised an awareness of flexibility of the specification initially outlined by the client as we as architects are responsible for the best outcome of every brief - along with building my spatial planning, lighting and aesthetic appeal as a designer.

Adapt and Extend
Archeology and Heritage Museum, Canterbury UK Year 3 / Autumn 2014 / Jef Smith
11 of 60
To design the new Exhibition Centre of Canterbury Archaeological Trust. This new public building needs to incorporate an existing building and to be adapted to the historic center of Canterbury. The existing building needs to be adapted to a new use and to modern requirements The design will propose a suitable extension to this building.
You are free to choose whether the extension will be dependent to the original building or an autonomous entity. This project enabled me to realise the importance of preservation - the preservation of aesthetic as well as emotion in design. Putting this on the pedestal throughout the design process generated successful results.

Urban
Sheerness-on-Sea, Town Rejuvenation Year 3 / Summer 2015 / Nikos Karydis
Your final project is the design of collection of community based facilities centred on music, dance and food in Sheerness‐on‐Sea. Your project will include rooms for music teaching, practising and playing, larger halls for dance and events, and a market hall for fresh produce. You will also design 30 one‐bedroom flats. In urban terms: Foster a greater sense of community; collective endeavour and mutual support; a sense of identity and purpose; top‐down and bottom‐up regeneration, combining outside benevolence with the engagement and energy the existing inhabitants. In architectural terms: Provide an urban catalyst: a relatively small intervention that can build momentum which attracts more people to choose to live there, filling gaps and enabling regenerations. The scheme shows existing transportation links and urban grid being utilised within the fabric of the focal ‘community hub’ itself. By investigating the gaps within the two towns, [bluetown] and [miletown] in detail, along with the appropriate sun stratergies I was able to create a new route through the site that acted as the axis to plant a new urban footprint. Conceptually, the aim was to echo the heritage of sheerness by incorporating old and new building technologies, represented by light and heavy materials.

MASTERS PORTFOLIO 2016-2017: AN AGEING COMMUNITY (IDEAL HOMES) PREFIGURATIVE ARCHITECTURES (RESEARCH)
SOCIAL
ECONOMIC
“EMPOWERMENT IS OFTEN FOUND IN THE DETAILS OF THE MUNDANE WORLD. IT COMES FROM CONTROLLING ACCESS TO PERSONAL SPACE, FROM BEING ABLE TO ALTER ONE’S ENVIRONMENT AND SELECT ONE’S DAILY AND FROM HAVING PERSONAL SPACE THAT REFLECTS AND UPHOLDS ONE’S IDENTITY AND INTERESTS” (RIDGEWAY ET AL., 1994)
PHYSICAL
AS DESIGNERS, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RENDER A STATIC SET OF PRINCIPLES THAT CAN BE APPLIED TOWARDS THE DESIGN PROCESS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE AN IDEAL. AS SPATIAL AGENTS HOWEVER, THE PROCESS OF DETERMINING THESE PARAMETERS OF DESIGN SHOULD NOT BE THE AIM - WITH THE BEST INTERESTS OF USABILITY WE MUST STRIVE TO APPLY AN INCLUSIVE AND PARTICIPATIVE METHODOLOGY TOWARDS A SPECIFIC IDEAL, ONE THAT RESPONDS TO THE DYNAMICS OF PHYSICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHANGE. THE CONCEPT OF THE ‘IDEAL HOME’ IS NOT A CONSTANT. INSTEAD IT IS ONE OF MANY AGES, GENDERS, ABILITIES AND CULTURES - TO NAME A FEW. FIRSTLY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE HOME. IT CAN BE SEEN AS ONE OF THE KEY SPACES THAT GIVES SHAPE AND MEANING TO PEOPLE’S EVERYDAY LIVES (GURNEY, 1990) AND A SYMBOL OF ONES IDENTITY AND PERSONAL EXPRESSION. THE HOME, AT THE VERY LEAST, SHOULD OFFER A COMBINATION OF REST, SECURITY, PEACE, QUIET, COMFORT AND HEALTH (GILMAN, 1903). THIS PROJECT AIMS TO EXPLORE THESE IDEALS FROM A CONTEXTUALISED PERSPECTIVE, DRAWING EMPHASIS TOWARDS INCLUSIVITY: FROM A DESIGN PERSPECTIVE, THE USER’S PERSPECTIVE, AS WELL AS THE PERSPECTIVE OF A CONSCIOUS DESIGNER.
THE IDEAL HOME
HOUSING PROVISIONS IN THE UK ARE CURRENTLY FAR FROM INCLUSIVE. THE DEMAND FOR SOCIAL HOUSING IS HIGHER THAN EVER AS INFLATION WITHIN PRIVATE RENTAL SECTORS CONTINUES TO ISOLATE A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF PEOPLE. THE NUMBER OF MORTGAGE FREE HOMEOWNERS IS STEADILY ON THE RISE AS YOUNGER PEOPLE STRUGGLE TO BREAK FREE OF PRIVATE RENTAL MARKETS, MAKING OWNERSHIP OUT OF REACH FOR MOST, RESULTING IN A HYPER-COMMODIFIED HOUSING MARKET FOCUSED ON EXHANGE VALUE.

THE IDEAS OF AVAILABILITY AND AFFORDABILITY WILL BE TACKLED THROUGH THE FOCUS ON DESIGNING WITH ABILITY. IT WILL ASSUMED THAT AFFORDABILITY IS A RESULT OF CAPITAL DUE TO INDIVIDUAL ABILITIES AND AVAILABILITY IS BECAUSE OF FLAWED HOUSING PROVISIONS AND DESIGN. ABILITY IS IDENTIFIED BY THE USER , AND SHOULD BE THE MAIN CONSIDERATION AS SPATIAL AGENTS .
ABILITY IS DIRECTLY RELATIONAL TO A MOMENT IN TIME. ALTHOUGH OLDER PEOPLE ARE MORE VUNERABLE TOWARDS
[DIS]ABILITY, ALL AGES SHOULD BE GIVEN CONSIDERATION, TO FORM A UNIVERSAL INCLUSIVE STRATERGY FOR DESIGN. *BELOW ONLY SHOWS A LIMITED SENSORY CATEGORY, AND PEOPLE MAY EXPERIENCE A COMBINATION AT VARYING POINTS IN THEIR LIFETIME. [DIS]ABILITY IS THEREFORE, IN SOME CASES, DYNAMIC.

/ ARE THE PLANNING, CONCEPTION, EVALUATION,
[DIS]ABILITY IS UNDERSTOOD AS A RESULT IMPAIRMENTS, EXCLUSION FROM GOOD INCOMES AND JOBS, LACK OF CONCERN WITH SPATIAL ARRANGEMENTS AND SOCIAL NETWORKS. THIS PERSPECTIVE DERIVES FROM THE SOCIAL MODEL OF DISABILITY WHERE INDIVIDUALS FEEL LIMITATIONS FROM AN IMPAIRMENT, AND THEREFORE PHYSICAL /SENSORY IMPAIRMENT MAY TRIGGER DISADVANTAGES IN LABOUR MARKETS OR IN ACCESS TO ASPECTS OF SOCIAL LIFE . WE INTEND TO NEUTRALISE THIS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE - HOWEVER IMPAIRMENTS ARE VARIED IN SEVERITY, ARE DYNAMIC , SOMETIMES TEMPORARY , AND DIVERSE . THE DESIGN OF CURRENT HOMES REINFORCED DEPENDENCIES, AFFECTING NOT ONLY THEMSELVES BUT RELATIVES AND POTENTIAL SUPPORT SERVICES. HOUSING HAS TAKEN IN INCREASING IMPORTANCE AS THE RELATIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF OLDER AGE AND CHRONIC ILLNESS HAS GROWN, SHIFTING THE AGE DISTRIBUTION IT WITHIN THE WHOLE POPULATION , WITH THE HOME BEING A CRUCIAL LOCATION FOR MANAGING HEALTH IN OLDER AGE. HOWEVER MANY DISABLED PEOPLE DEPEND GREATLY UPON THE HOME OR IMMEDIATE LOCALITY BECAUSE OF CONSTRAINTS PLACES ON THEIR LIFESTYLE BY ATTITUDES OF THE NON -DISABLED: INADEQUATE HOUSING FACILITIES, SPACE, SEATING, SECURITY AND DESIGN ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND CAN GIVE ‘HOME ’ SOME NEGATIVE MEANINGS . TODAY, THE TERM ‘SPECIAL NEEDS’ IS USED INCREASINGLY FREQUENTLY, OFTEN IDENTIFYING DISTINCTIVE HOUSING ISSUES AND DESIRABILITY OF OF RELATIVELY INTENSIVE FORMS OF HOUSING MANAGEMENT OR HIGHLY SPECIFIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. HOWEVER, THIS APPROACH CONTINUES TO SEGREGATE AND CREATE BOUNDARIES , AS OPPOSED TO INCLUSION .
INCLUSIVE DESIGN APPROACH
THIS RESULTS IN A LOW ABILITY OF PURCHASING POWER WITHIN THE PRIVATE HOUSING MARKET, MAKING [DIS]ABLED PEOPLE INCREASINGLY DEPENDENT ON SOCIAL HOUSING
A [DIS]ABLED PERSON MAY ALSO HAVE EXTRA EXPENSES SUCH AS MEDICATION, TRANSPORT, MAINTENANCE. ADAPTATIONS TO EXISTING HOMES CAN BE OUT OF REACH AND SPECIFIC
DESIGNING FOR SPECIFIC IMPAIRMENTS THEREFORE IS NOT SOCIALLY OR ECONOMICALLY EFFICIENT. OCCUPIERS MAY MOVE ON, IMPAIRMENTS MAY BECOME MORE SIGNIFICANT OR REVERSE OVER TIME. IMPLEMENTING ISOLATED DESIGN SOLUTIONS HENCE MAY LIMIT INVESTMENT FLEXIBILITY, AS WELL AS LOWERING POTENTIAL USE VALUE FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE OCCUPANTS .

DUE TO THESE FACTORS, DESIGNING WITH AN AGED FRIENDLY CONSCIOUS IS MOST APPROPRIATE WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURAL SPHERE. THESE STANDARDS WILL REDUCE THE FURTHER COST OF ADAPTATIONS WHILE ENHANCING INDEPENDENT LIVING. THE CENTRAL IDEA IS FOR A NORMAL HOUSE TO BE BUILT WITH ENOUGH FLEXIBILITY SO THEY CAN FACILITY COMFORTABLE LIVING OVER A FAMILY LIFE CYCLE: INTERNAL DESIGN, INTERNAL AMENITIES, FIXTURES AND FITTINGS . DWELLING DESIGN ADAPTATIONS SHOULD BE AIMED AT CONVENIENCE, SAFETY AND COMFORT; AND SHOULD BE RESPONSIVE TO SPECIFIC USER UNDERSTANDING OF DETAILED NEEDS, BUT AGAINST A BACKCLOTH OF IMPROVED UNIVERSALISTIC BUT FLEXIBLE STANDARDS , FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO ALSO BENEFIT FROM . A KEY APPROACH TO THIS PROJECT IS THE VISITABILIITY STANDARD (ROWE, 1990) - NON-RESIDENTS USING A WHEELCHAIR SHOULD BE ABLE TO SOCIALLY VISIT A HOME. THE ABILITY TO ENTER A HOUSE , THE ABILITY TO PASS THROUGH INTERIOR DOORWAYS OF THE HOUSE, AND AS A MINIMUM, GROUND FLOOR ACCESS TO AN ACCESSIBLE TOILET . THESE FEATURES ARE DESIGNED FOR WHEELCHAIR USE WHILE VISITING/LIVING, BUT ALSO ACCOUNT FOR OCCUPANTS WITH TEMPORARY MOBILITY IMPAIRMENTS, FOR EXAMPLE, A BROKEN LEG. LIVING PERMANENTLY IN THE HOME WITH A SIGNIFICANT MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT REQUIRES TWO ADDITIONAL BASIC FEATURES ON THE GROUND FLOOR : A FULL BATHROOM AND A BEDROOM . WHILE WE SHOULD CONSIDER THESE IN THE DESIGN OF NEW BUILD HOUSES, IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO APPLY THESE PRINCIPLES TO EXISTING HOUSING STOCK. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT PURCHASING NEW PROPERTY IS INACCESSIBLE BY MOST. HOWEVER, ADAPTATIONS TO AN EXISTING DWELLING CAN PROVE COSTLY, THUS OPENING UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A NEW POLICY OF OWNERSHIP .
AGE-FRIENDLY AND VISITABILITY
“WHILE
THERE IS DIVERSITY OF INTEREST AND IDENTITY, THERE REMAINS AN ESSENTIAL LEVEL OF COMMONALITY IN THE COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE OF DISCRIMINATION AND OPPRESSION.” (PRIESTLEY
1998).
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RENDER THE ‘IDEAL HOME’ WITHOUT CONSIDERATION OF ‘THE IDEAL NEIGHBOURHOOD’. THE IDEAL HOME IS ONE THAT IS THAT PROMOTES AND MAINTAINS SOCIAL BONDS, ONLY POSSIBLE THROUGH A CONNECTED AND ACCESSIBLE RANGE OF COMMUNITY ASSETS. BURNAGE MCR IS THE PERFECT PRECEDENT TO DEVELOP PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED PROCESSES. THE AREA WAS SUBJECT TO AN IN DEPTH ANALYSIS WHILE DEVELOPING A NEIGHBOURHOOD ACTION PLAN: SHARED GARDENS AND DYNAMIC INTERVENTIONS IN PUBLIC SPACES. THESE METHODS OF RETERRITORIALISATION OF SPACE WILL PROVIDE A GOOD ECONOMICAL BASIS TO PROPOSE AND APPLY NEW HOUSING POLICIES AND METHODS OF DOMESTIC SPACE.
THE PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES: - TO REINSTATE THE USE VALUE OF EXISTING HOUSING STOCK FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS - TO MAKE SOCIAL HOUSING AND OWNERSHIP AVAILABLE AND AFFORDABLE TO THOSE CAUGHT IN THE PRIVATE RENTAL SECTOR, ‘LOW-PRIORITY’ INDIVIDUALS, AND OF VARYING ABILITIES - TO CONSIDER THE DYNAMIC NATURE OF INDIVIDUAL ABILITIES/IMPAIRMENTS/NEEDS WITHIN THE DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT

A HIGHER THAN AVERAGE NUMBER OF OLDER PEOPLE LIVE IN BURNAGE, HOWEVER THERE ARE ONLY CERTAIN POCKETS OF THESE PEOPLE LIVING ALONE TOGETHER. FOR THOSE WITHOUT A VEHICLE AND/OR REPORTING BAD HEALTH, THEY ARE FACED WITH A HIGHER CHANCE OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL ISOLATION AND RESTRICTIONS TO COMMUNITY ASSETS.
IN THE IMMEDIATE DOMESTIC SPACES BELONGING TO THESE LONE OCCUPIERS, APPROXIMATELY 20-33% OF SPACE IS UNUSED/UNDERUSED.ALONG WITH POSSIBLE EXPENSES IN ACCORD TO TRANSPORT, IMPAIRMENTS AND BILLS, THOSE WITHIN THE SOCIAL RENTAL SECTOR ARE ALSO FACED WITH BEDROOM TAX. ALL THESE FACTORS COULD POTENTIALLY LEAVE OLDER PEOPLE VUNERABLE TOWARDS POVERTY. COMMUNITY ASSETS

THESE SPACES COULD DO NOT ONLY TIE UP MONETARY CAPITAL, BUT A CAPITAL OF USE VALUE. CONSIDERING THE HIGH DEMAND FOR A VARIETY OF HOUSING NEEDS IN BOTH THE SOCIAL RENTAL AND PRIVATE PROPERTY MARKETS, IT BEGS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A NEW HOUSING STRATEGY.
CURRENT STATUS: BURNAGE, MANCHESTER
AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM IN BURNAGE IS THE AMOUNT OF WASTED SPACE. LONE OWNER OCCUPIERS ARE LIVING ALONE IN LARGE PROPERTIES THAT THEY MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN OR SUITED TO THEIR ABILITY, BUT ARE PERHAPS CONCERNED ABOUT INHERITANCE/SOCIAL ISSUES AND AVAILABILITY IF THEY WERE TO DOWNSIZE. THIS MAKES IT INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE AREA TO CLIMB THE HOUSING LADDER TOWARDS OWNERSHIP, AS THERE IS LESS HOUSING STOCK APPROPRIATE FOR A GROWING FAMILY, RESULTING IN RELOCATION. WITHOUT NEEDING TO RELCOATE, HOMEOWNERS WILL BE ABLE TO RELEASE CAPITAL IN THEIR HOME BY LEASING BEDROOMS TO HOUSING ASSOCIATION SOUTHWAYS. IN RETURN, THEY WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INCREASE THE SPATIAL FLEXIBILTY OF THEIR HOME ACCORDING TO THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES VIA A PREFABRICATED EXTENSION SOLUTION. THE MODEL WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE TO THE SOCIAL RENTAL SECTOR, FOR LOWER RENTS. IN THIS INSTANCE BEDROOM TAX WILL BE ERADICATED. HENCE, THERE IS A HIGHER AVAILIBILITY OF HOUSING STOCK TO RENT AT AFFORDABLE PRICES FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE, WHO ARE ABLE TO BREAK AWAY FROM PRIVATE RENTALS, OR EVEN HOMELESSES AND SAVE TOWARDS OWNERSHIP. THE VERSATILITY OF THE ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION IS ADAPTABLE ACCORDING TO ABILITY IN A SET MOMENT IN TIME, FOR CURRENT AND POTENTIAL OCCUPIERS.

THE INTERVENTION FOCUSES ON THREE KEY PRINCIPLES:
- TO REINSTATE THE USE VALUE OF EXISTING DWELLINGS IN BURNAGE, MANCHESTER - TO MAKE SOCIAL HOUSING AND OWNERSHIP ACCESSIBLE TO ‘LOW-PRIORITY’ INDIVIDUALS - TO CONSIDER THE DYNAMIC NATURE OF INDIVIDUAL IMPAIRMENTS/NEEDS WITHIN THE DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT THE MANCUINAN SUBURB OF BURNAGE IS HOME TO PREDOMINATELY OLDER PEOPLE. HOUSING IS A MAJOR COMPONENT IN DISABLING OR ENABLING ENVIRONMENTS THROUGH PHYSICAL, ADMINISTRATIVE AND FINANCIAL CHARACTERISTICS, AND PEOPLE EXPERIENCING IMPAIRMENTS DUE TO OLDER AGE OR CHRNOIC ILLNESS. THE ISOLATED MAY ENCOUNTER RESTRICTIONS AND BARRIERS IN PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO CONDITIONING THEIR LIFESTYLES. IN RETURN THIS MAY AFFECT POSSIBILITIES OF INTERACTION WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND ASSESTS IN THEIR AREA. MOST HOUSING HAS NOT BEEN DESIGNED WITH OLD AGE/IMPAIRMENT IN MIND, DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENTS OFTEN INHIBIT EFFECTIVE SELF-MANAGEMENT OF ILLNESS OR IMPAIRMENTS, AND MAY EVEN EXACERBATE A CONDITION - AFFECTING LIFESTYLE OPTIONS AND COMFORTS OF DAILY EXPERIENCE. THIS MODEL DOES NOT PROPOSE EXTENSIVE NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR AN ADAPTATIVE HOUSE, WHICH CAN PROVE COSTLY TO INSTALL, BUT A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL MEANS OF LIVING THAT IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF DAILY TASKS WHILE REMAINING INDEPENDENT. OWNER OCCUPIERS WILL HAVE THE CHOICE TO RELEASE CAPITAL IN THEIR HOMES IN THE FORM OF DISUSED SPACE TO HOUSING ASSOCIATION SOUTHWAYS, EFFECTIVELY MAKING THE PROPERTY PARTLY SOCIAL RENTED. THIS COULD BE AS SEEN SIMILAR TO HOUSE REVERSION SCHEMES, HOWEVER UNLIKE HOME REVERSION WHERE OWNERS MUST BE OVER THE AGE OF 65, THE SCHEME WILL BE OPEN TO ALL TO AID VARYING REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUALS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE. THE SCHEME WILL ALSO BE OPEN TO EXISTING SOCIAL RENTAL TENANTS LIVING ALONE. AS A RESULT OF THE PROCESS OCCUPANTS WILL BE ENTITLED TO AN INCREASED HOUSING BENEFIT (NO BEDROOM TAX) AND LOWER RENTS. MAKING THE SCHEME ACCESSIBLE BY ALL INDIVIDUALS WILL IN TURN HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, AND A STEP FORWARD TOWARDS AN INCLUSIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD.

WHILE THE MODEL IS MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL AT A SPECIFIC POINT/PERIOD IN TIME, AS SEEN IN THE INSTANCE OF MRS BARLOW, IT ALSO HAS THE ABILITY TO CHANGE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF DYNAMICS OF OCCUPANTS OVER THE LIFE COURSE: "A SEQUENCE OF SOCIALLY DEFINED EVENTS AND ROLES THAT THE INDIVIDUAL ENACTS OVER TIME" (GIELE AND ELDER 1998). THE LIFE COURSE CAN BE INTERPRETED AS TIME/AGE, AS SPECIFIC EVENTS, OR AS LIFE STAGES. THE EXAMPLE OF JENNY, ZANE, SHAN AND MRS BARLOW DEMONSTRATES HOW THREE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN BENEFIT FROM AGED FRIENDLY AND INCLUSIVE DESIGN. THE FLEXIBLE FUNCTIONALITY OF BOTH THE ECONOMIC AND SPATIAL AREAS OF THE MODEL ENABLE ADAPTABILITY ACCORDING TO A CHANGE OF CIRCUMSTANCE(S). SPATIALLY, THE EXTENSION PODS CAN TAKE ON VARIOUS USES, AND CREATE DIFFERENT ZONES TO THE HOUSEHOLD. ECONOMICALLY, THE TENURE IS AVAILABLE IN THE FORM OF A PERSONAL CHOICE: AND HAS THE FLEXIBILITY TO SUIT EVERY INDIVIDUAL. OVERALL, AS DISCUSSED PREVIOUSLY, UNIVERSALLY DESIGNING WITH A SPECIFIC [DIS]ABILITY IS RESTRICTIVE TO THE LIFE CYCLE OF A HOME, AND TIES UP FINANCIAL CAPITAL. THIS MODEL DEMONSTRATES HOW THE HOME CAN BE IDEALLY RESPONSIVE TO THE VARYING REQUIREMENTS OVER A LIFE COURSE, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME HELPING YOUNGER PEOPLE ONTO THE PROPERTY MARKET. THIS IN TURN RESULTS IN AN ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD.
THE GENERATIONAL TRANSITION
THE INCLUSION OF THE PROPOSED MODEL INTO BURNAGE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO ERADICATE ISOLATION, AND FREE THE SHACKLES OF THE PRIVATE PROPERTY MARKET. IT IS EVIDENT THAT REINSTATING THE USE AND SOCIAL ELEMENTS OF THE DIFFERENT ZONES OF DOMESTIC SPACE FOR ALL ABILITIES IS KEY TOWARDS INCLUSION. IN THE CASE OF MRS BARLOW, SHE WAS ABLE TO REINSTATE HERSELF BACK INTO HER NON-CAPITALIST ACTORIAL ROLE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, PRIMARILY DUE TO CHANGES IN HOUSING PROVISIONS/POLICY AND SPACE, COMPLIMENTING THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE SHARED GARDENS AND MOBILE WORKSHOPS. THESE FACTORS HAVE A SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT ON HEALTH AND WELL-BEING - REGARDLESS OF AGE; CIRCUMSTANCES, OR ABILITY. AS ARCHITECTS IT IS EASY TO CONSIDER INCLUSIVE PRINCIPLES (NOT ALWAYS THE CASE) WHEN DESIGNING NEW DWELLINGS. BUT WHAT ABOUT OLDER HOUSING STOCK? OLDER PEOPLE TEND TO LIVE IN OLDER HOUSES, OFTEN ALONE, AND IT IT UP TO US AS SPATIAL AGENTS TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND WELL CONNECTED TO THEIR NEIGHBOURHOOD THROUGHOUT ALL COURSES AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF LIFE.
AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH TOWARDS ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF DESIGN IS REQUIRED TO ADDRESS THE SIMPLE FACT: WE ARE ALL DYNAMIC, AND OUR URBAN ENVIRONMENT MUST RESPOND
BURNAGE: AN INCLUSIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD

UNDERSTANDING OF PREFIGURATION HAS DEVELOPED THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR - AS IS THE NATURE OF PREFIGURATION ITSELF. THIS DYNAMISM WILL DICTATE THE WAY I PERCEIVE THE IDEAS OF PREFIGURATION HENCEFORTH.
THIS
DYNAMIC NATURE, I BELIEVE, IS THE RESULT OF AN EVER CHANGING SOCIO - POLITICAL SYSTEM . T HEREFORE THESE PARALLELS PRESCRIBE THE OUTPUT SPECIFICALLY FOR DISRUPTING THE EXISTING SOCIAL CONDITIONS - AS EXPLAINED BY DINERSTEIN IN ‘T HE P OLITICS OF A UTONOMY IN L ATIN A MERICA ’(2014). P REFIGURATION THEREFORE , WHETHER IN THE FORM OF AN URBAN OR SPATIAL INTERVENTION , IS AN EXPRESSION OF REVOLT AGAINST THE SYSTEM - AN EXPRESSION OF POSITIVE POLITICAL CHANGE. THIS BOOKLET EXPLORES ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICES/ PROJECTS THAT IMPLEMENT A NEW SET OF URBAN POLITICS. THROUGH NOTIONS OF PREFIGURATION, THEY ADDRESS THE CRISIS AND NEED TO DISRUPT ‘ POST - DEMOCRATIC OR POST - POLITICAL […] THE CURRENT POLITICAL CONDITION IN WHICH THE SPACES OF PUBLIC REFLECTION ARE VOIDED OF DISPUTE AND DISAGREEMENT AND REPLACED INSTEAD BY A CONSENSUALLY ESTABLISHED FRAME WITHIN WHICH PARTICIPATION SERVES TO UPHOLD AN IMAGE OF DEMOCRACY.’ (BOANO, KELLING 2013)

TODO POR LA PRAXIS [TXP] · MADRID TXP AIM TO CREATE A DATABASE OF ACCESSIBLE, SOCIALLY EFFECTIVE SPATIAL/ URBAN METHODS. THESE METHODS ARE FIRST IMPLEMENTED THROUGH THE PARTICIPATION OF COMMUNITIES TO DISRUPT THE SOCIOECONOMIC URBAN LANDSCAPE - SKILLS AND METHODOLOGIES ARE DEVELOPED AS ‘THE P E O P L E A R E PA RT O F T H E P O L I T I CA L PROCESS’(BOANO, KELLING 2013). WITH THE INCREASING DECLINE OF AUTHORITATIVE SENSITISATION TO SOCIAL NEEDS, TXP PUSH THE CREATION OF THESE USER-GOVERNED SPACES AND INTERVENTIONS — WITH AS MUCH FOCUS ON THE PROCESS AS THE END RESULT. BY MAKING THE PROCESSES OF THESE INTERVENTIONS OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE, THE USER IS ABLE TO REPLICATE/IMPROVE/MODIFY THEM AND ENGAGE IN BUILD-PROJECTS OF EMPOWERING CULTURAL RESISTANCE. THE PARTICIPATIVE NATURE OF THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT ALLOWS THE CREATION OF AN INTERVENTION THAT EMPOWERS OF THEMSELVES AS ONE COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY, RECOUPS ITS USE VALUE AND GIVES CHARGE BACK TO THE PEOPLE. WALTER’S WAY · LEWISHAM, LDN
· 1980
WALTER SEGAL WAS KNOWN FOR DESIGNING A SUSTAINABLE SELF - BUILD HOUSING SYSTEM BASED ON TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION. THIS
SINCE WHOLE FAMILIES COULD BUILD THE HOUSES TOGETHER, THE BUILDING PROCESS
IN ITSELF ENGENDERED A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED TO BE A SELF-BUILD PROJECT BY THE INDIVIDUALS THEMSELVES, AUTHORSHIP OF THE PROJECT CAN STILL BE SEEN TODAY AS EXEMPLIFIED IN THE ROAD NAME: "WALTER’S WAY". THIS QUESTIONS WHETHER THE INTENTIONS OF EMPOWERING THE CITIZENS AND NOT THE ARCHITECT HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL HOWEVER A HOMAGE TO THE IDEALS OF THE ARCHITECT.
INTRODUCED THE NOTION OF AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF OWNERSHIP. THIS METHODOLOGY OF SELF BUILD ALLOWED THE COMMUNITY TO ‘ WIRE THE LANDSCAPE OF THEIR COMMUNITIES WITH THE DEVICES, NETWORKS, OR ARCHITECTURES THAT THEY DEEM WORTHY OF LOCAL ATTENTION OR CONCERN.’ (JIMÉNEZ 2014) ‘WALTER’S WAY’ WAS A COLLABORATION BET WEEN THE LOCAL COUNCIL, KEEN TO SHORTEN SOCIAL HOUSING WAITING LISTS, A COMMUNITY KEEN TO OWN, AND AN ARCHITECT WANTING TO DISRUPT THE CURRENT METHOD OF OWNERSHIP. BY REDUCING ARCHITECTURE DOWN TO ITS ESSENTIALS, HE ENABLED PEOPLE TO BUILD THEIR OWN HOMES, BASED ON A MODULAR GRID FROM MATERIALS AVAILABLE FROM THEIR LOCAL LUMBERYARD. WALLS COULD BE MOVED, AND USERS COULD REARRANGE THEIR OWN SPACES ALLOWING THEIR HOMES TO CHANGE AND ADAPT ACCORDING TO THEIR LIFESTYLE. THERE WAS NO NEED FOR EXPENSIVE SLABS , INSTEAD THE FOUNDATIONS WERE PLACED WHERE REQUIRED, AND THE TIMBER FRAMES CONSTRUCTED ACCORDINGLY.

METROPOL PARASOL EPITOMISES THE ISSUES REGARDING THE CRISIS - EGOISTIC STARCHITECTS AND EVER-EXPANDING COSTS, WITH A HUGE
DISREGARD OF THE SOCIALIST VALUES OF THE STATE, BUT INSTEAD MOSTLY FOR PERSONAL INTERESTS/MEDIATED REPRESENTATION. MORE IMPORTANTLY HOWEVER , THE RESULTS OF CONSTRUCTION WERE UNFULFILLING. THE SITE WAS OCCUPIED BY THE SEVILLIAN INDIGNADOS IN A CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED ON 15MAY 2011. 15M SEVILLA WAS A PART OF A WIDER ACTIVIST MOVEMENT IN SPAIN BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE LOCAL ELECTIONS AND THE CONSEQUENT DEFEAT OF THE SPANISH SOCIALIST WORKERS' PARTY. THE PROTEST WAS BASED ON THE UNJUST INVESTMENT OF PUBLIC MONEY, NOT JUST INTO A SUBSTANDARD, ANOMALOUS STRUCTURE BUT INTO CAPITALIST STRUCTURED BUSINESS SACYR. SACYR HAS A 40-YEAR CONCESSION OVER THE BUILD, DUE TO THE DEBT THE STATE OWES EPITOMISING A VERSION OF THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS OF THE CURRENT B RITISH GOVERNMENTS. IT IS APPARENT THEREFORE, ‘LA SETAS’ WERE SIMPLY CONSTRUCTED DUE TO PRIVATE INTERESTS OF THE GOVERNMENT - IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT MAYOR ALFREDO SANCHEZ MONTESEIRÍN WAS CAMPAIGNING TO BE RE-ELECTED AT THE TIME OF PROPOSAL.

THE SETAS THEREFORE ACTED AS A PLATFORM FOR A C T I V I S M , B O T H P H YS I C A L LY A N D SYMBOLICALLY.‘THE DISRUPTION OR CLAIM FOR CHANGE MIGHT SURFACE IN THE WAY AN A R T E F A C T A P P E A R S , T H E WAY I T I S FABRICATED, THE WAY IT FUNCTIONS OR THE WAY IT SHAPES OUR EXPERIENCES OF PLACES AND THINGS.’ (THORPE 2014) THE SETAS THEMSELVES DISRUPT AND TEAR THE URBAN FABRIC OF OLD CITY. THUS, THORPE’S CLAIM APPLIED IN A METAPHORICAL MANOR IMPLIES A SIMILAR DISRUPTION EMBODIED IN A POLITICAL MOVEMENT. ‘ARTISTIC PRACTICES (THUS INCLUDING ARCHITECTURE AND SPACE) A R E F O R M S O F V I S I B I L I T Y T H AT CA N THEMSELVES SERVE AS INTERRUPTIONS OF THE GIVEN PARTITION OF THE SENSIBLE.’ (BOANO, KELLING 2013) IF THE GOVERNMENT WANT TO DISRUPT THE URBAN VERNACULAR IN THE FORM OF A CAPITALIST MONUMENT, THE RESIDENTS OF THAT URBAN VERNACULAR WILL DISRUPT THE ORDER OF SOCIETY - SET BY THE GOVERNMENT.
