WELCOME WELCOME CEREMONY CEREMONY ''The Joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives. - Russel M. KEYNOTES KEYNOTES “Telemedicine: Changing Medical Care in Covid times Before becoming a Doctor, I was a patient myself,” says Dr. Saurabh Chawla, Co-Founder at DOCTERZ. As someone who has worked in the rural settings he has a deep understanding of the existing Primary Healthcare Infrastructure. The changing times and need of patients motivated him to set up DOCTORZ.COM an online consultation platform. As the Hospitals are occupied with COVID patients. Both patients and doctors need safer ways to engage with each other. A solution to follow up with doctors, the ability to make payments, and receive doctor’s advice is required to create a safe healthcare system. Technology has been constantly changing how patients receive healthcare, irrespective of geographical boundaries, making quality healthcare more accessible and affordable even in far-flung areas. At the same time, patients’ expectations for a convenient healthcare system are also evolving. However, the lack of awareness of patients about digital solutions due to their complexity, or the lack of knowledge about current online healthcare solutions have been the major drawbacks which need to be dealt with at the earliest. Hence, there is a need for a user-friendly platform with user-centric approach which can be used even by common people.

Classical Music Why it is high time to ingrain classical music in India's health care and role of Medical students. It is said "Music can heal wounds Medicine cannot touch." Biological explanations may not do justice to the effect music has on man, however to quote Plato "Music is mortal law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything else". Starting with the Neuro-Psycho-Endocrinology of music and the researches related to the application of Music Therapy in palliative treatment, the session was an enlightening one. Highlighting the void of this particular field in India Dr. Tara Rajendran talks about how it can benefit patients and help to revive the artists of our country. Talking about the need to change and reignite the lost passion of classical music in trained medical students, she establishes the need for a new outlook to Music as a whole.

Medically mediocre As one of its kind session, Medically Mediocre was an extraordinary & cheerfully delivered interactive talk by Dr. Avi Singh, the current VOCI for AMSA- India with several academic accolades to his name. The aim was to help everyone discover their unique way of learning and instill confidence in themselves, no matter which college in which part of India they are in, and how they have been scoring in the past. Thanks to Dr. Avi’s brilliant tips and tricks, expressed through a uniquely personalized and aesthetic presentation with 20 secret pearls of wisdom in there & tricky Questions to challenge the human mind. Everything was comprehensively kept forward to help the students realise that it is not about how intelligent one is, but how confident, quick and wise you are.

Indian scenario of global surgical research For the fourth keynote of AMSACON, we had Dr Dhruv Ghosh, who is Hub Director (India), Global Surgery Research Collaborative, University Of Birmingham, UK and Professor (Paediatric Surgery), Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, Punjab, India Consultant (Paediatric Urology), Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman speak to students about global surgery research in India.

The session was hosted by Dr Rohini Dutta, intern at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana and Researcher at the Indian hub for global surgery. The session began with Dr.Ghosh discussing the healthcare scenario in India followed by the the creation of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, which encompasses almost 110 different countries, efforts have now been set on working at the highest level - with governments, health ministers, and financial officers - to enact changes in policy and infrastructure for whole countries to improve people’s access to surgical care. Currently, 5 billion people around the world do not have adequate access to basic surgical care. Our global economy could lose 21 trillion dollars between 2015 and 2030, with 12.3 trillion lost by low- and middle-income countries, so the lack of surgical care worldwide is also a significant detriment to the progress of humanity. Global surgery research aims to provide data to impact the healthcare scenario by providing solutions in LMICs like India. Medical students can get involved in research with NIHR India Global Surgery Hub in the following ways: Formulating their own Micro studies after successfully procuring funding by NIHR Global surgery University of Birmingham through the Indian Hub with the help of faculty mentors.

Asian Medical Students' Association- India

Taking part in ongoing Randomised control trials (RCTs) or the ones in inception eg. GIRAFFE RCT, etc. Taking part in existing ongoing cohort studies/ micro studies funded by NIHR eg. CROCODILE. For the same, GCP Training is required. The Indian hub of global surgery is already establishing an online portal for providing medical students with GCP Training. Other research opportunities would be put up on the website, promoted via social media. Ultimately, whether you are interested in surgery/anesthesia/OBGyn, global/public health, economics/finance, policy, technology/engineering, education/empowerment, statistics/research, or any combination of these, you have a very significant contribution to make to this growing field. And no matter how young or old you are, no matter how little or how much you can contribute, your involvement in global surgery is incredibly necessary and valuable. We are looking for determined, driven and hardworking medical students with a strong interest in surgical research. A protocol on how you all can be formally involved along with a google form is underway. Watch out for the same in the upcoming month! The session ended with a quick impromptu QnA with Dr Ghosh and Dr Rohini where queries about finding mentorship in surgery and being an able mentee were discussed. You can view the session on AMSA-India youtube channel incase you missed it. For any queries contact: Dr Rohini Dutta Instagram @beyondhercurls_ Twitter : rohdutta

As it was their first event, the MERSA team had put in a lot of efforts to make the sessions as informative and funfilled as they could, with a lot of activities and hands-on-training. 30 participants were selected out of 200+ applicants based on their motivation behind joining the workshop. At the end of day 3, the participants were asked to fill a post-event questionnaire consisting of questions from the pre-event form in addition to few more questions to access the knowledge gained through the workshop. The participants were scored based on their performance in the homework given, their proposal and the post-event form and a baseline passing criteria of 50% marks were fixed. The passing scores along with the attendance of 3 days was the eligible criteria in order to qualify for the certificate.
