introduction
World Antibiotic Awareness Week
The World An,bio,c Awareness Week is a campaign by WHO dedicated towards increasing awareness on an,bio,c misuse and is held on the 12-18 November annually.1 This year, AMSA Interna, onal will be holding a compe,,on based on this event, with the theme “Reducing an,bio,c-resistant individuals by reforming our standpoint in the global community
World Antibiotic Awareness Week
The consequence for this is fatal, since when an infection occurs, it would be a lot harder to cure as antibiotic-resistant bacteria tend to be more durable compared to non-resistant bacteria.4 This condition is becoming more and more prominent in the world today, but studies have found that antimicrobial-resistance has been more prominent in countries where antibiotics can be bought and used without prescription.2,5
As the investigation continues, WHO found that today, antibiotics are overprescribed by health workers and overused by the society, especially on countries with inadequate standard treatment guidelines regarding antibiotics.3 In South East Asia alone, the number of outpatient prescribed with antibiotics has reached up to 67%.2 In the Asian society, antibiotics has been regarded as an all-mighty drug, one where a person should take whenever they fall ill.5 The unregulated usage of antibiotics would lead to ineffective yet frequent antibiotic exposure on bacteria. As a result, these microbes would adapt to the constant exposure and develop themselves into antibiotic-resistant microbes.2-5
By holding this competition, AMSA International aims to increase the awareness and knowledge regarding antibiotics usage, with hopes that we will increase the ability of our participants to curb the growth of antibioticresistance in their own communities.
AMSA International 2018/2019
In the present day, the rise in numbers of antibiotic resistant individuals is an emerging problem, especially in the Asia Pacific Region.2,3 Being antibiotic resistant would mean that antibiotics available today would be deemed ineffective when used on these individuals.2-4
