WELCOME to MOROCCO Thank you for joining us in Marrakech for ASTA’s 2015 Destination Expo. We are thrilled to discover this exotic land together with you adding another unique destination to your list of specialties. Each year we search for a destination that is rich in culture and opportunity. We hope you will take every advantage in becoming a specialist of this diverse country, discovering it from the mountains to the sea, from the desert to the dozens of historical sites and cities. ASTA and the Moroccan National Tourist Office (MNTO) have much planned for you right here in Marrakech—from the opening night dinner complete with an Arabian horse show sponsored by the MNTO, to a reception fit for royalty at the Selman Palace sponsored by Royal Air Maroc. Marrakech is laying out the red carpet for ASTA agents. Our educational sessions are designed around making you an expert, allowing you to experience all the sights and sounds of Morocco so you can tell the story of this this beautiful destination. You will

leave here knowing who to sell Morocco to, how to do business in this culture, and maybe even how to cut through government red tape. And whether you are a male or female business owner, you will be inspired by the stories of some amazing women during our Women of Influence Panel. The first female Mayor of Marrakech, Fatima-Zahra Mansouri will share her story on what it is like to push outdated gender boundaries. But in a dynamic destination such as Morocco, you will want to leave the classroom behind and get out and take in as much of this country as possible. We kept the program tight and lined up with as many pre and post tours as possible to allow you to experience this country on your own, or in small groups. Take this opportunity to experience as much as you can, from great cities such as Fes and Casablanca to the Sahara Desert and the Atlas Mountains. This Destination Expo would not be possible without the generosity of our partners, the MNTO and Royal Air Maroc. We also appreciate the tremendous support shown by all of the exhibitors who made this program possible. ASTA agents, please get to know these exhibitors, and make sure you qualify to earn your ASTA Morocco Destination Specialist certificate so you can wow your existing customers, and add a new specialty to entice prospective clients. Thank you for joining us. Let’s explore Morocco together.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Unless otherwise indicated, all functions will be held at the Palais des Congres Convention Center.
Thursday, February 26 8:00am – 5:00pm
Registration Location: Bahia Area Foyer 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Opening Night – Fantasia
Shuttles to the Opening Event will depart from Palais des Congres at 5:30pm and 6:00pm.
You will not want to miss this magical evening where you will be transported to a page from One Thousand and One Nights… The fantasy begins as you walk through torch lit palm groves to a collection of colorful and exotic Berber tents. Once inside, you’ll pull up a cushion and prepare to be entertained and feted. You will be offered a sumptuous feast of Morocco’s best cuisine, and entertained by skilled folk dancers, musicians and entertainers. You might even witness a sultan taking his carpet for a spin. But that’s not all. As you exit your magical tent, you’ll take a ring side seat for the main event – “Fantasia” – a show like no other. Fantasia, based on an ancient war ceremony where tribesmen from around the country would display their horse and rifle skills, is a cultural art. You’ll experience a dizzying, and at times thunderous, synchronized dance between riders and their Arabian horses. Imagine a starry night in an open field lit only by torches, as two groups of traditional warriors on horseback race toward each other from opposite ends of the field holding red flags. Hold on to your Fez and prepare to be amazed. Sponsor: Moroccan National Tourist Office

Half Day Sightseeing Tours with Lunch Hidden Gems of Marrakech Dive deep into the heart of the medina (old town) and visit the unique sites and often overlooked gems of Marrakech. One stop will be the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a former 14th century school that is now a historical site opened to the public. Its 130 student dormitory cells cluster around a courtyard richly carved in cedar, marble and stucco. Another gem you’ll visit is the Almoravid Koubba. Built in 1117, it is the only remaining example of Almoravid architecture in Marrakech. The interior is richly decorated with floral patterns (pine cones, palms and acanthus leaves) and calligraphy. And finally, you will explore the Museum of Marrakech, which is as much about the building – the Dar Menebhi Palace – as is it is about the artifacts it houses. Built at the end of the 19th century, it is an example of classical Andalusian architecture, with fountains in the central courtyard, traditional seating areas, a Hamman and intricate tile work and carvings. The museum contains exquisite examples of Moroccan art, books, coins and pottery that are representative of Morocco’s diverse cultures.
Marrakech Medina and Souks (Old Town and Shopping) This tour will guide you through the rich history, exotic labyrinths and open-air theater of the medina (old town) and allow you to discover the heart and soul of Marrakech. It begins in Djemaa el-Fna Square, just as the snake charmers, story tellers and entertainers awaken, and just as the local food vendors begin to fire up their stoves for the day. As you continue, you will be guided deep inside the Medina to corners you simply could not find on your own. And along the way, you’ll visit the bustling souks (open air markets), mosques and other ASTA Destination Expo - 15
ADE15-024 Morocco Program of Events_v6.indd 15
2/9/2015 2:06:46 PM
prominent architectural features. While at the souks, you have the chance to shop, taste and even haggle over the price of Moroccan garments, jewelry, spices and oils. By the time you finish all of your senses – sight, sound, taste, touch and most definitely smell –will be stimulated.
The Magical History Tour Immerse yourself in the culture and deep history of Marrakech, which, founded in 1062, is the second oldest imperial city in Morocco. You’ll start out at the Koutoubia Mosque, whose 250 foot minaret was completed in the twelfth century, and is said to have inspired other buildings such as the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat. You’ll stroll by the Bab Agnaou gate, which is the entrance to the royal Kasbah. You’ll also see the Bahia Palace, which was built in the late 19th century. Bahia Palace’s name, translated as “brilliance,” captures the essence of the Islamic and Moroccan style it contains. While they say you can’t take it with you, some have tried, as you’ll see when visiting the Saadian tombs. After the tombs were walled off by the sultan Ahmad al-Mansur in 1603, this amazing treasure remained unseen by anyone until its discovery in 1917.
Moroccan Culinary Experience You’ve tasted tagines and mint teas, so you’ve no doubt experienced the rich aromas of Moroccan cuisine. Now it’s your chance to learn the secrets so you can take them home with you and share with those that you love. During this session, you will learn about the rich aromatic spices and oils used to prepare Moroccan meals. You’ll also get a chance to prepare a Moroccan meal with guidance from a local expert. You’ll make a tagine, bake local bread, and be taught the secrets of couscous. 7:00pm – 10:00pm

Full Day Sightseeing Tours with Lunch Marrakech: On the Path of Carrie Bradshaw If you’ve seen Sex and the City 2, then you have a good idea as to what this tour is about. If you haven’t seen it, let’s just say you’ll walk a mile in Sarah Jessica Parker’s shoes…well, maybe not Manolo Blahniks, but in her footsteps at least. Regardless of whether you can identify with the movie or with any of its main characters – Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda – you will certainly identify with its set – Marrakech. While the film claimed to be in Abu Dhabi, in reality, the fabulous setting was, indeed, Morocco. This tour will take you to the famous Djemaa el-Fna square and medina. It also will take you to a number of luxury hotels, such as the Taj Palace Marrakech, La Mamounia and Amanjena that were used when making this film. So, if you want to see Morocco like a movie star, and have a glimpse at the more luxurious side of Marrakech, this is the tour for you (Cosmopolitans not included).
The Atlantic Coast, Essaouira and Argan Forest Essaouira – on the Atlantic Coast – will on one hand feel French, as it was designed by the Frenchman (Nicholas Théodore Cornut) who designed Saint-Malo in Brittany, and also feel Portuguese, as the Castelo Real de Mogador (fortress) was constructed by the King of Portugal in the 1500’s, yet it won’t take long for you to see that its soul is definitively Moroccan. UNESCO has described the town as “a multicultural centre as proven by the coexistence, since its foundation of diverse ethnic groups, such as the Amazighs, Arabs, Africans, and Europeans as well as multiconfessional (Muslim, Christian and Jewish).” While in Essaouira, you’ll visit the Museum of Essaouiral, experience the Castelo Real de Mogador (fortress), where you will have the option of climbing its tower. You’ll also have free time to visit local craftsmen and merchants, or to check out the local catch-of-the-day as fishermen offload their catch. You’ll also get to experience the coastal winds, or the alizee, that
ASTA Destination Expo - 17
ADE15-024 Morocco Program of Events_v6.indd 17
2/9/2015 2:06:46 PM
are unique to Essaouira. Essaouira, and its famous alizee winds are a world renowned host to kite and windsurfers. On your way to and from Essaouira, you’ll also get to see the Argan Forest, where you’ll likely stop and see how Moroccan argan oil is made.
Atlas Mountains and the Berbers This tour has it all – breathtaking Atlas Mountains, gorgeous valleys, spectacular waterfalls, authentic Berber culture, a short hike, as well as a break from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. Oh, did we mention the fresh air? On this tour you’ll go through the Asni Valley, pass through traditional Berber villages built from adobe and stone, and even experience Berber customs by drinking mint tea with locals. After breaking bread and eating in true Berber style (no fork or knife), you’ll have the chance to visit a Berber co-operative where traditional rugs, pottery, and jewelry are made on site. Depending on our timing, we might even visit a local school.

Find a job. Fill a position.
Many job seekers and employers are discovering the advantages of searching ASTA Career Center for jobs and qualified candidates to fill them. When it comes to making career connections in the field of travel, the mass market approach of mega job boards may not be the best way to find what you need. The American Society of Travel Agents created the ASTA Career Center to give employers and job seeking professionals a better way to find each other and make that perfect career fit.
Employers: Target your recruiting to reach qualified professionals quickly and easily. Search the resume database to contact candidates and get automatic email notifications whenever a candidate matches your criteria. Job Seekers: Whether you’re looking for a new job, or ready to take the next step in your career, we’ll help you find the opportunity that you’ve been looking for.
Visit www.asta.org/careers to post your job or search job listings.
