ASTA Global Convention
ASTAGLOBAL CONVENTION
WELCOME TO ASTA GLOBAL CONVENTION Welcome aboard the Breakaway as we prepare to “Seas the future” together in this unique setting for an ASTA Global Convention (AGC). We have our eyes trained on the horizon so we can help you prepare for what lies ahead. We know that the only way we are going to make a difference, to effect change, to move the needle in a way that ensures a vibrant travel industry, is to focus our energies on the same opportunities at the same time. Together. As travel professionals, you are in the experience business. And nothing can replace the experience of meeting face-to-face and having the kind of conversations with your peers and with the experts that will inevitably make you better at what you do. Here is what you can expect during the convention this week:
Sales Sessions to Boost your Profitability—we have a lineup of sales executives with decades of experience on how to drive up your bottom line, such as Norwegian’s own Andrew Stuart, EVP of Global Sales and Passsenger Services. They’ll teach you how to strengthen your supplier relationships, or your agent relationships if you are a supplier, to become a sales superstar and to upsell whether it be tours or cruises or group travel.
Inspiration—We designed many of the sessions to look beyond the present, and to inspire. You’ll be inspired by Nolan Burris, chief Visioneer of Future Proof Travel Solutions who will lead you to new levels of excellence. You’ll be entertained by speakers such as cruise expert Jeff Drew who wants you to think outside of the box and fine a new niche, and you’ll be ready for the next generation of leisure traveler after hearing how to stay one step ahead by CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg.
A Great Destination—We’ll spend three days on Bermuda, the “Jewel of the Atlantic,” where you will experience the destination either through ASTA-only events or by enjoying the shore excursions. And we have lined up hotel inspections for you to learn more about the properties.
Enjoyment—We’re on an award-winning cruise ship, so that speaks for itself. In addition to the dining, nightlife/entertainment and spa offerings on the ship, we also have a Taste of Bermuda gathering on land with local suppliers, and a special reception in the historic City Hall of Hamilton with Mayor Graeme Outerbridge. And finally, we want to thank you for choosing to take the time to join us for this week-long adventure. It is our hope that you will be inspired and find new ways to move your business forward and sharpen your sales skills. The opportunity to network with your peers is just as valuable as the educational sessions. If you are not an ASTA member, we hope you will consider joining and benefitting from all we do to promote and defend this community. To our proud partners and our members, we thank you for your continued support and hope that you enjoy Bermuda and Norwegian’s Breakaway. I look forward to spending time with you this week.

Perhaps that’s why so many simply never get around to doing it. In this inspirational workshop, we’ll take you through a different approach to putting your plans to paper, and making your business or career dreams come true. We will take a tour of the simple things that can enable, or derail your efforts. You’ll learn how to spot obstacles and conflicts, and bring everything back into alignment. Whether you are an agency owner, a manager, or an entrepreneurially minded consultant; everyone can benefit from learning how to create a plan and make it happen. But, don’t expect the usual boring business approach here. We’ll be starting with your heart before we get to your head.

The marketing adage “PICTURES SELL” couldn’t be more true for travel. And if a picture’s worth a thousand words, what’s a video worth? If you’re like most travel professionals, you take lots of personal photos on your site inspections of hotels, cruise ships, new aircraft, and destinations you travel too. And if you’re really hip and current, you’re even taking video! But what do you do with all those great resources once you get back to the office? How can you use those tools to help you sell more travel? (After all, that’s the goal, right?!)

It has often been said that a database is your business; it is one of your most valuable assets should you ever decide to sell your agency. It is also one of the most important tools for success today if used strategically. This session will take a nontechnical view of agency databases from the perspective that matters the most: building relationships. So while we won’t be discussing bits, bytes and clicks, we will be talking about how to get the most from whichever database you have, or are considering.

This session will examine the things travel agents can do to limit their liability when a disaster strikes, a supplier goes bankrupt or something goes wrong on a cruise or tour, as well as look at the steps that can be taken to minimize risk overall. Room: Le Bistro, Deck 6
In this session, you will learn what makes the state of Yucatán, México so special, and the unique experiences you can offer your clients looking for a different Yucatán experience. The capital of the state, Mérida, was geographically cut off from mainland México until the 1950’s. Its wealthy residents had easier access to the U.S.A., Cuba and Europe than to the rest of Mexico. This isolation sent the city’s affluent community traveling to Europe (particularly France), where they imported lavish goods and European styles. Mérida became known as the “Paris to the West”. Sumptuous mansions and palaces still line the elegant Paseo de Montejo, a tropical Champs Elysées, just blocks away from the Main Square. Today, Mérida is a cosmopolitan and cultural destination with world class attractions including museums, performing arts, historic houses -some of them turned into beautiful boutique hotels- and haciendas, as well as a destination for excellent medical attention and great shopping.

listing on ASTA’s consumer website—TravelSense.org, which has over 54,000 unique visitors per month. In the first six months of 2014, over $1.3 million in travel requests were made available to ASTA members.
Access Unmatched Industry Resources – ASTA offers resources that busy travel professionals don’t have the time, resources and expertise to gather on their own. The ASTA 2014 Regulatory Compliance Handbook is a prime example. ASTA has read and analyzed all the federal statutes that apply to travel professionals and has translated them into language that is easy to understand and use.
Protect Your Industry – Many decisions affecting your profitability and your freedom to operate are made by people who know nothing about the travel agency industry. ASTA monitors legislative proposals, endorse travel agents’ interests to members of Congress and organizes grassroots support. Your support helps secure a healthy and sustainable retail travel environment.
Promote Your Value – ASTA is constantly promoting, and in some cases, defending the retail travel agency industry. This is a fantastic industry, with a great story to tell.
Stop by the ASTA Booth or the ASTA Information Desk to join, renew or visit. Pam Bonin, Director of Membership
Strengthen Your Network – ASTA’s meetings provide you with opportunities to build lasting professional friendships with peers and suppliers that can help you grow your bottom line. They are open to you and all your employees.
Engage Your Employees – As an ASTA member, you can extend ASTA’s valuable industry resources and benefits to your frontline agents.
Collaborate – ASTA needs to hear from YOU. ASTA offers unique opportunities for you to be actively involved with industry leaders through chapter and national committees and meetings.
ONE VOICE – Let’s face it, we’re in this together. The retail travel agency industry can accomplish so much more if we ALL come together as One Voice.
