Zicht op het paradijs

A view of paradise

In het paradijs sprak men Nederlands. Ik was er als kind vast van overtuigd dat Adam en Eva (en de slang) voor mij en mijn zussen, en voor de andere kinderen in onze straat, verstaanbaar met elkaar praatten. Carry van Bruggen formuleert het iets anders maar bedoelt hetzelfde wanneer ze in Hedendaagsch Fetischisme schrijft: “Uit mijn jeugd herinner ik mij hoe iemand mij vertelde dat de Franschen een mand “panier” noemen. Ik keek naar het ding en dacht: Ze kunnen het wel panier noemen, maar het is toch een mand.” Boekenkasten zijn er vol geschreven als bewijs dat onze taal de natuurlijke moeder aller talen is. En niet alleen aan de Nederlander was die overtuiging eigen, bijna alle volkeren bepleitten hun eigen zaak. Anno 2014 halen we onze schouders op over zoveel onwetenschappelijkheid. En de Hof van Eden is al lang uit ons zicht verdwenen. Maar toch kunnen we bewondering hebben voor de fantasie van vroeger, en hoe deze werd vormgegeven. De neerslag van deze overtuiging, en van de heimwee naar het paradijselijke, wordt bewaard in musea, en is tastbaar bij de antiquaar.

Dutch was spoken in Paradise. As a child I was convinced that Adam and Eve (and the serpent) conversed in a tongue that was understood by me, my sisters and by the other kids on our block. The Dutch writer Carry van Bruggen expressed the same feeling in different wording, when she wrote ninety years ago: “From my youth I remember that someone told me that the French call a basket a ‘panier’. I looked at the thing and mused: They may call it a panier, but it still is a basket.” Many, many books have been written in the past centuries to prove that our own language is the mother of all languages. Not only Dutch writers held this conviction, almost all nations had their language advocates. These days we shrug our shoulders at so much chauvinistic and unscientific bias. And the Garden of Eden has faded from our view a long time ago. But we still may feel admiration for the fantasy of past centuries, and for the way this fantasy was moulded in concrete form. This concrete form is safe-kept, and on view, in our museums, and it is tangible at your antiquarian booksellers.

As usual this catalogue serves as a stepping stone to our Antiquarian Book Fair. We celebrate the seventh lustrum: The 35th Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair will open its doors on Friday, October 3, at 2 PM to 7 PM, and on Saturday, October 4, from 10 AM to 6 PM. As in previous years we organize the Fair jointly with our friends of the Union of Dealers in Old Books (BOB). We cordially invite you! First and only Dutch edition of an account of the voyages of three English merchant adventurers: John Sanderson in the Levant, Egypt and Constantinople (Istanbul), presented here as 1671-1676 but in fact describing travels in the years 1584-1602; Henry Timberlake in Jerusalem (1601); and the young John Smith in the Ottoman Empire (ca. 1598-1604) before his more famous voyage to America. All three are loosely translated from the relevant accounts in Purchas his pilgrimes, London, 1625, but the accounts of Sanderson and Timberlake are written in the first person. The present publisher added some texts from other sources, and the frontispiece and other illustrations, etched and engraved in a style sometimes reminiscent of Romein de Hooghe, are also new. Timberlake, though Protestant himself, shocked more narrow-minded Protestants by his accounts of the kindness of a Muslim Moor journeying from Fez to Mecca, who had joined his ship at Algiers and secured his release when he was arrested in Jerusalem. Slightly browned and with the title-page backed, apparently to strengthen it after a library stamp on the back was erased, minor and mostly marginal smudges or spots and a small marginal tear, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. Lacking the final blank leaf. The dedication was supposed to precede the publisher’s note to the reader, but is here bound after it. The binding is rubbed and tattered, with most of the title-label gone. First Dutch edition of a fascinating account of English merchant adventurers in the Levant, Egypt and the Ottoman Empire: Indiana Jones ca. 1600. With large folding plate (43 x 52.5 cm) engraved by Antony de Winter, showing a large ship in full sail and two smaller sailing ships at its side, with a key to all main parts of the ship, the masts and the rigging, referring to the numbers used in the main text. Later red half cloth. € 2.250,Extremely rare fourth(?) edition of De volmaakte bootsman, with the folding plate printed from the original copperplate probably engraved for the lost first edition ca. 1700. It is a practical guide for future boatswains by Symon van de Moolen. It covers the names, location and measurements of all main parts of a ship, the masts, the rigging, etc. and includes nine “charters” for various kinds and sizes of ship in the Dutch navy: tables giving the materials needed to build the ship, with their dimensions, including materials for the rigging and masts. The book ends with an appendix describing 77 numbered European, Jerusalem crusaders’, Maltese and Turkish maritime flags. Title-page detached and reattached, 1 leaf with a corner torn off, touching the catchword, some minor restorations to the folds of the plate, the title-page and the introduction. Important socialist satirical weekly of truly international level; not only of interest on account of the artistic quality of the drawings, but also for its literary contributors, and the influence it had on public opinion. Most of the crew, about 250, were rescued by small ships from Jamaica after Archer had sailed a ship’s boat to Montego Bay. Most of the other ships lost had no survivors. Edward Riou (178?-1801) had sailed as midshipsman with the third voyage of James Cook. ‘When the colony of New South Wales was established in 1788, it was expected that supplies from England would arrive at regular intervals. However, one of the first two supply ships never arrived, when disaster overtook H.M.S. Guardian, commanded by Lieut. Edward Riou. The Guardian, laden with two years’ provisions for the new colony, left London in July 1789, but was wrecked on an iceberg twelve days out of Cape Town. FOUQUET, P. Views of Amsterdam. (Atlas van Amsterdam. Amsterdam, P. Fouquet Junior, 1760-1786). Folio. 19e eeuwse half leren band met rood titelschildje met goudopdruk, marmers op de platten. Verzameling van 90 kopergravures van Amsterdam naar tekeningen van en in koper gebracht door Jan de Beijer (1703-1773), Simon Fokke (1712-1784), Caspar Philips Jacobsz (1732-1789), Hendrik Keun (1738-1787), Paul van Liender (1731-1797), Hendrik Spilman (1721-1784), e.a. Formaat band 44,5 x 35 cm. € 4.975,¶ Dr. I.H. van Eeghen: "De kunstverkoper Pierre Fouquet liet van 1760 tot 1783 door bekende Amsterdamse tekenaars de stad in beeld brengen, en die tekeningen, hetzij door henzelf, hetzij door anderen graveren. De prenten kregen een opschrift in het Nederlands en in het Frans, en werden los of in series verkocht. De eerste serie van 1760-1761, die getekend was door Jan de Beijer hadden 10 of 12 prenten. Het succes wat hij had, deed Fouquet voortgaan tot 1778. Omstreeks 1780 liet hij een inhoudsopgaaf drukken voor 100 prenten, uiteraard ook in het Nederlands en in het Frans. Omdat ze gedeeltelijk al genummerd waren, hebben er diverse nummers een toevoeging gekregen van een sterretje. Vooraan kwam nog een kaart van Amsterdam. Daar de prenten los werden verkocht en door de koper moesten worden gebonden, verschillen de bewaarde exemplaren sterk ". Ons exemplaar heeft geen tekst, titel of inhoudsopgave, geen plattegrond en telt 90 gezichten, 10 exemplaren met een ster, 80 gezichten met of zonder nummer. De gravures zijn verschillend van kwaliteit en formaat, sommige zijn tamelijk donker, hoe donkerder de gezichten hoe later de druk (de laatse druk is uitgegeven door Maaskamp in 1805). Twee gravures hebben een vouw (gebruikelijk want deze zijn groter). - Rug en marmers geschaafd, scharnier voorzijde gedeeltelijk gebroken. AMSTERDAM. Afbeeldinge van het Uytstekend Raadhuys tot Amsteldam, van vooren aan te zien geordineert door den zeer beroemden Architect d'Heer Ian van Campen, Ridder. Gezicht op het Paleis op de Dam. Ets uitgegeven te Amsterdam bij Iohannes Covens en Cornelis Mortier na 1721. Stoffering van buiten geinventeert en gëetst door Laurens Scherm. The first plate measures 19.7 x 25.9 cm, the others ca. 17.5 x 23.5 cm. Loose sheets inserted in modern portfolio. After the calligraphic title and the portrait of Bakhuizen follow an impressive personification of the city of Amsterdam, showing the Maid of Amsterdam riding in Neptune’s triumphal chariot, with in the background the 64-gun man-of-war Amsterdam (built in 1688) and the shipyard and depot of the Dutch East India Company, and below, a 6-line verse celebrating the Dutch overseas trade. The other plates show coastal, harbour, river and sea views, including the IJ (Amsterdam), the Maas (Rotterdam) and a family picnicking on the shore of a river, with a wide variety of ships and boats, from large men-of-war to small rowboats, on calm seas and in violent storms. At the upper left corner a crowned Dutch lion and at lower right a key to 150 numbered buildings, bridges, streets, canals etc. At the foot, right of the centre, a 32-point compass and a cartouche, surmounted by Neptune, with a 12-line Latin text above a scale bar and Bast’s signature (“Petrus Bastius fecit”). Landwehr, Romein de Hooghe, 39. The very rare first edition of this beautifully illustrated book and considered to be one of the most important books (and the first it seems) on unarmed combat. The 16 pages of text explain how the various defenses must be executed, the wonderful illustrations by De Hooge visualize how that in practice works. Prof. Syndey Anglo (Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe): “historically speaking the most important treatise on unarmed combat ever printed. In many ways, the finest of all wrestling books - and deservedly the most famous - ... It is, perhaps, unique in combining an effective system of unarmed combat with an exposition from which it really would be possible to learn. ..., and he therefore sought out the great artist Romein de Hooghe so that his book should be perfect in all its parts” (Anglo). Nicolaes Petter (1624 - 1672) was a 17th century German wine merchant and wrestling master. He was born in Mommenheim, Germany, and took on an apprenticeship in Amsterdam, Netherlands as a young man. He then joined the wine guild and went on to become a successful wine merchant. Petter practiced a style of grappling known as luctorius, and was known in his time as an undefeatable wrestler. His clientele seems to have consisted mostly of upperclass gentlemen, and the techniques he taught were considered more “civilized” than common wrestling. Petter wrote an extensive treatise on grappling as a means of urban self-defense titled Klare Onderrichtinge der Voortreffelijke

A. Gerits & Son b.v. Antiquarian Booksellers Worstel-Konst (“Clear Education in the Magnificent Art of Wrestling”), but did not publish it before his death in 1672. His widow inherited the manuscript and published it with illustrator Romeyn de Hooghe in 1674, and it was reprinted and translated many times in the following centuries. Sydney Anglo describes this text as “historically speaking, [one of] the [two] most important treatises on unarmed combat ever printed”, and notes that “in many ways, the finest of all wrestling books-and deservedly the most famous-was the treatise by Nicolaes Petter and Romeyn de Hooghe”. The combination of Petter’s lucid descriptions, devoid of all jargon, and de Hooge’s masterful depiction of pain and violence in the engravings, elevates the book to its position of solitary eminence. It is also probably unique in presenting an effective and complete unarmed combat system in a format from which it would be actually possible to learn. The book is very rare: ABPC lists 6 copies at auction between 1983 and 1991 and no further copies since. - A bit browned along the edges but a fine copy.

Contemporary overlapping vellum, title handwritten to spine, a very nice copy. € 5.000,Ter Meulen-Diermanse 567; Printing and the Mind of Man, 258 (for the first edition). Blaeu calls it the second edition because the 1626 Frankfurt edition was not edited by Grotius himself and published without his authorization and consent. "Between 1625 and 1631 Grotius revised and enlarged the book and shortly after the end of his stay in France he published a second edition (this edition) in Amsterdam in 1631, which should be considered as constituting its definitive text" (ESS, vol. vii, p. 177 ff). This 1631 edition thus constitutes the definitive text of this famous work. This is the first edition to be published in the Netherlands and the first to be published in folio. The edition published in 1631 is the most important of the 5 editions that were published and edited by the author himself (Ter Meulen-Diermanse, 567, note 3). Between the first edition of 1625 and the last of the 5 published and edited by Grotius himself there are over 1114 changes, additions and corrections, of which over 950 are to be found in this edition. The Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius is the founder of the modern concept of international law and is celebrated for his treatise on the law of war and peace, De jure belli ac pacis, 1625. Severing law from theology, he argued there that actions were bound by natural law, based on man's own nature and independent of God, and that on the basis of the law of nature it was possible to formulate a coherent code suitable for all times and places. The section dealing with the "law of peace" had no parallel in the work of any predecessor; it was a marvel of inductive juridical composition and formed the foundation of the whole system. The work is considered to be one of the pioneering texts of modern international law. - Handwritten ex-libris "A. Couperus and Netscher were close friends since they met at secondary school in The Hague. In a letter to Netscher, Couperus thanked him for the gift of this book, although he wasn’t impressed by the politicians portrayed in it: ‘Ik heb je werk met belangstelling gelezen, omdat het van jou was; anders had ik het, geloof ik, niet gelezen. Want al die mannetjes interesseeren me om hunzelve heel weinig en alleen een beetje, om de kunst, die jij wel zoo goed bent aan ze te verspillen. Ik hoop van harte dat je er veel geld meê verdient; anders begrijp ik in mijn onpolitieke naïveteit heusch niet waarom je al die vervelende heeren zoo analyzeert.’ In September 1890 Couperus dedicated his novel Noodlot in print to Frans Netscher. Books from the library of Couperus are rarely on the market.

This is one of only two copies skillfully and tastefully bound by Phoenix Bindery’s Philipp Janssen; decorated with an imprint of an original army boot on the upper cover. The rough and at the same time delicate appearance corresponds perfectly with the title and contents of the book. A fine contemporary Dutch art binding!

Explanatory text by Antoine de la Barre de Beaumarchais (who, like Picart, lived in the Netherlands) after Michel de Marolles. An English, a French and a German edition were published simultaneously.

Toen de Amerikanen in 1776 hun vrijheidsstrijd tegen het Verenigd Koninkrijk begonnen, leverden de Nederlanders hen wapens via Sint Eustatius. Toen de USS Doria met de nieuwe Amerikaanse vlag in top kwam aanzeilen werd zij begroet met saluutschoten van Fort Oranje. Het was de eerste keer dat een buitenlandse mogendheid de vlag van de Verenigde Staten eerde met een saluut. De Engelsen verklaarden hierop Nederland de (Vierde Engelse) oorlog. Een Britse expeditie van 3000 troepen kwam van Saint Lucia op 3 februari 1781 aan op St. Eustatius. Na een enkele schotwisseling gaf de Nederlandse gouverneur zich over om bloedvergieten te voorkomen. De Britse controle over St. Eustatius duurde slechts tien maanden.

In 1772 verhuisde Luzac van Den Haag naar Leiden om zijn oom Etienne Luzac, eigenaar en uitgever van de Gazette de Leyde, bij te staan. Zijn bijdragen in de Gazette baarden in Europa, maar vooral in Amerika, groot opzien. In 1785 aanvaardde hij in Leiden het hoogleraarschap in het Grieks. Luzac werd 17 februari 1796 ontzet uit zijn ambt als hoogleraar in de vaderlandse geschiedenis.Bij het neerleggen van zijn rectoraat, 21 februari 1796, verscheen zijn beroemde oratie ‘De Socrate cive’, een pleidooi voor die staatsregeling waar de wijsgeer koning en de koning wijsgeer moet zijn. De oratie is opgedragen aan de president van de Verenigde Staten van Noord-Amerika, John Adams en door de schrijver zelf vertaald en met aantekeningen uitgebreid. Een jaar later verscheen een herdruk. Luzac deed vervolgens ook afstand van het hoogleraarschap in het Grieks. Eerherstel kreeg hij pas in 1802’. NNBW, 1, 1290-94. Boeknr: 590772.

A lovely copy. € 9.500,First edition, second issue (known as ‘type B’), of Rousseau’s greatest work. It is ‘the first great emotional plea for the equality of all men in the state ... a crucial document of egalitarian government’. The printing history of this book has been amply set out by Rousseau’s bibliographers T.Dufour and R.A.Leigh at hand of the correspondence between Rousseau and his Amsterdam publisher Rey. On 6 January 1762 Rousseau suggested to Rey to use for this his new book a changed version of the vignette that was used before for the Discours sur l’inégalité. Rey commissioned two vignettes: one showing Justice standing with helm and balance, and one showing Justice seated with cap. Rey chose the former, but in a letter of 28 February Rousseau disapproved of this choice because he found the result messy. When Rey received this letter he apparently had already started the printing. Yet he decided to meet Rousseau’s wishes and made a new title for which he used the vignette with Justice seated. This vignette however was somewhat bigger and Rey decided to move the first three lines of the title (‘Du contract social’) to the half title. In the mean time he received a new letter in which Rousseau asks for reasons of discretion to replace a note on civil marriage on pages 321 and 322 by another note, a few days later followed by another letter in which he orders to suppress this note as well. Rey again decided to meet Rousseau’s wishes and printed again pages 321-324. The suppression of the note meant that page 324 would become blank, and Rey decided to use it for a catalogue of his books. Apparently when these changes were made copies had either already left the printing office or were overlooked. Only few copies of the first issue (known as ‘type A’) have survived. *Dufour 133. Some, mostly marginal repairs to first and last leaves, the last leaf with loss of a few words of text which have been added in a modern hand. Kept in a fine modern box. € 6.500,First, manuscript edition, of utmost rarity. Written in a period that the author lived in utter poverty and hence could not afford having printed this text he let the publisher Didot make a number of manuscript copies. They were sent to some 30 ‘outstanding philosophers and physicians’. This is an attempt to develop a truely positive social science based upon the methods of the natural sciences. Saint-Simon believed that society could be understood by its underlaying natural laws which would result in a social science capable of constructing a perfect society. His arguments for the scientific organization of society have been seen as ‘the first example of pure socialism... understood as an economic system in which production is entirely carried on in common and the fruits of labour distributed according to some ideal standard’ (R.T.Ely). The text was printed for the first time in 1858 in a stout volume entitled P. Enfantin, 1858 - H.Saint-Simon, 1813. Science de l’homme. Physiologie religieuse. It was printed again the next year in the second volume of the Oeuvres choisies, accompanied by a list of names of some 30 addressees. The text of the manuscipt shows various differences with the printed text. It includes for instance the Resumé, omitted in the first printed edition but included in the Oeuvres choisies (vol.II, p.141). *Mazzone 29. The present copy lacks the last parts and the final title to volume 4 of the second series. Volume 4 of the second series was published from 1877 to 1900 and is often found lacking or incomplete. We have pp. 1 to 218 (of 338) and plates 1 to 38 (of 50), bound in publisher’s gilt cloth, which indicates that the publisher considered this the final unfinished volume of the complete work. Cobres I, 381: „Ein Werk ohne seines gleiches, in der ungemein sauberen Ausführung, daher höchst schätzbar‘.; „ ... eines der prächtigsten Abbildungswerke der Lepidopterologie ...“ (W. Junk). Its really marvellously executed plates are the culminating point of entomological illustration. Almost complete copies as the one offered are of great rarity. The publication of this work which according to Nissen probably started as early as 1728, stopped two hundred years later, when in 1928 the author of the third series, A. Brants, deceased after having completed only the first ten parts of the first volume. The famous publishing house Sepp & Zoon was a firm which excercised the utmost care in producing colour-plate books of outstanding quality. In the present case Sepp was the author as well as the publisher. “First series started by Christiaan Andreas Sepp together with his son Jan Christiaan (1739-1811) published in issues and in the format after the model chosen by Roesel von Rosenhof; Sepp followed his own path for the descriptions of butterflies and their illustrations. A history (1996) the present title played an important role in the attraction of opium in artistic circles between the two world wars. Furthermore, it has been suggested that Laloy re-acquainted Jean Cocteau to opium while he was suffering from deep depression after the death of his friend Raymond Radiguet.

?, 1694 - Uitgegeven in imperial folio; in halflederen band - Het Caartboeck van Voorne bestaat uit 35 kaarten met een prachtige titelpagina. De kaarten zijn gedeeltelijk oud gekleurd. - Op 1 juni 1694 werd in de Generale Dagvaart besloten tot het vervaardigen van een Caartboeck van Voorne. Van elke polder zou een kaart worden vervaardigd waarop elk perceel met de precieze afmeting stond aangegeven. Op die manier kon het schot nauwkeuriger worden bepaald, en waren vronen en tiendhoeken overzichtelijker in beeld te brengen. In 1695 werd definitief besloten tot vervaardiging van een kaartboek en de opdracht daartoe werd aan Heyman van Dijck gegeven. € 6.000,49

Folio (32.6 x 19.4 cm) with 249 engraved plates and six engraved title pages (four resembling frontispieces, engraved by Matthias Merian). Contemporary uniform full mottled calf. Spines with six raised bands, compartments with rich gilt floral patterns and two green morocco labels with gilt titles. € 9.000,-

A nice and complete set in the rare first edition of Jonston’s famous ”Historiae naturalis” depicting all then ”known” animals including insects, snakes, ”dragons”, shells, birds, etc. This is the Frankfurt edition, which is much rarer than the second edition that was printed in Amsterdam (1657). With the fine plates of such animals as an elephant with its driver, famous different horses, but also the more dramatic ”draco’s” depicted after ”aldro” (Aldrovandus) and the Hydra with seven heads. Most plates are quite accurate and the animals depicted are easily identifiable to the species level. Some, however, are rather vague; perhaps composites or entirely mythological. The part on snakes and dragons, and the one on molluscs, have a ”regular” title page with a large vignette; all the others have a frontispiece-like title page, with the title as part of the engraving. Several plates bound out of sequence. A few pates with old paper repairs. The combined index to volumes IV and V much toned. Several text pages browned, the plates usually in much better condition. Some endpapers, a few plate figures, and several text page margins with ink annotations in an old hand. Provenance: ”Prof Rey” handwritten on a few front pastedowns and title page margins. Very few complete copies of the first edition ever came to auction and the portrait is often lacking, as in this set. In all, a nicely bound, uniform set printed on rather thin paper (as usual) with age-toning, especially in the text and margins, and other minor defects being the result of over 350 years of use, but most engravings cleaner, with a strong impression and overall a good to very good set. A fine, hand-coloured and uncut copy of the third volume (mainly dealing with molluscs) of one of the most splendid and largest natural history works from the mid-18th century. Seba’s ”Cabinet of Natural Curiosities” is regarded as one of the 18th century’s greatest natural history achievements and remains one of the most prized natural history books of all time. Though it was common for men of his profession to collect natural specimens for research purposes, Amsterdam-based pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665-1736) who made a fortune working for the VOC (Dutch East India Company), had a passion that led him far beyond the call of duty. His collection of natural history objects was displayed in four very large volumes, which are nowadays very rare, and of which this is the third, edited by Aernout Vosmaer (1720-1799) assisted by Pallas and Houttuyn. This part deals with marine life, in particular fishes, starfish, crabs and - mostly - molluscs, as well as corals. All the figures are in contemporary colouring. ”Coloured copies cost fl. 200.00 per binding making Seba the most expensive book in this period” (Landwehr, p. 185). The colouring is fine and comparable to the copy signed by J. Fortuyn in the Royal Library in The Hague. The images of the shells depicted in this volume belong to the most beautiful and decorative, produced in the second half of the 18th century. The colouring is in general quite accurate; only some shell sections have a more frivolous colouring. This, however, is not peculiar as the tropical shells then available on the European markets were often ”enriched” with additional colours, painted on the shells themselves. Two editions of this work were simultaneously published, namely a Latin/French one, and a Latin/Dutch one. This is the French one, which is the rarer of the two (see Landwehr, p. 70). Jozef Cantré - (Set of ) 6 (illustrations) woodcuts, hand printed, titled, signed & dated 1922 by the artist; illustrations to Karel van de Woestijne - Christophorus. Together in folder, obviously also made by Cantré. These illustrations, made by Cantré for this story by Van de Woestijne, were used later in 1926 for the edition published by De Sikkel & Van Dishoeck in 110 copies (10 on Japanese paper). When this as a play was brought to the stage, my father, the artist Wim Schuhmacher, designed the setting. He also painted a wonderful portrait of the dancer Elisabeth van der Vies, who acted the princess in this play.

First edition of this book of poetry, considered to be his very best. Printed in 35 copies only, on Ossekop paper (Van Gelder Zonen) by Alexander Stols at his Halcyon Press. One of the very few copies bound in full morocco (black) by Louis Malcorps. white double paper selfwrappers printed and decorated on both sides in blue, black and red after design by Piet Zwart, the frontcover with a large perforated circle covered from inside with transparent red paper showing the ‘R’ form title-page. € 13.500,Zwarts advertising booklet known for his famous photomontages. Only his 2 books NKF (cable) are more sought after. But probably due to its size (18.2 x 25.7 cm) it is even more scarce. No copy in his archive. So no complete copy auctioned by Bubb Kuyper in Harlem, there recently only some specimen leaves. Complete with the often absent yellow paper strip attached to the cover; some tiny creases.

On Elizabeth's accession he left England rather than conform to the new religion, going to Louvain and Paris to study theology. In 1563, back in England, he was summoned by the Anglican bishop Barlow to repudiate the pope's authority but refused. He retired to Louvain and in 1568 he went to Douai where he helped founding the English College there. He soon became a professor. In 1584 he resigned the preferments to enter the Society of Jesus, but did not complete his novitiate. Philips II appointed him professor of Scripture at Louvain in 1590. His fame as a theologian had spread to Rome and Pope Clement VIII invited him twice to Rome in vain. He remained at Louvain untill his death in 1598. With manuscriptual provenance of 1593 (Fr ....?), the stamp of a former library at Leuven and two names of formers owners or users (Willem Gods? & Catelyn Wantels?) on the verso of the last free endpaper. Closing-ribbons partly gone; vellum binding with some traces of use (a small hole in the right downer corner); otherwise a good copy.

Rare first edition, published anonymously, with disguised address. Lodewijk Meyer (1629-1681), a physician in Amsterdam, was a friend of Spinoza. In this most challenging of his texts, he argues that the Bible should be interpreted through Cartesian rationality. “Unsurprisingly, given the book’s sensational content, there was an immediate outcry throughout the United Provinces, precipitating a major commotion of great importance in Dutch culture” (Jonathan Israel, Radical Enlightenment). Zeldzame boekjes met belevenissen en indrukken van de jongens, de meisjes en de kampleiding die deelnamen aan de jeugdkampen in de oorlog op Buitenplaats Ipenrode te Heemstede dat in 1944 toebehoorde aan drukker B.F. Enschedé. Naar schatting zijn er ongeveer 50 kampboekjes gedrukt. Beide delen zijn typografisch verzorgd door Theo de Wal. Deel 1 (48 pp) bevat gedrukte verhalen met originele ingeplakte foto’s van met name het jongenskamp in de maand juni. Duitse legerofficier Carl Gottlieb Heinrich, lopend over de jaren 1802-1818. Oblong boekje geheel in leren band met ca. 90 inschrijvingen, waaronder 16 aquarellen en 4 tekeningen en 2 geborduurde bladen. Los in de kaft. Heinrich kwam uit Bischofswerda in Saksen, waar zijn ouders en verdere familie woonden, die in 1802 bijdragen leverden. Edges somewhat vagued, board at frontside also rubbed. 570 pages. 23 engravings by Hendrik Schwegman and H.Roosing and a folded map of France. € 2.100,Very nice, rare account of the travels of Adriaan van der Willigen through France. First ‘modern’ Dutch account of Paris. In 1802, the author , at the age of 37 went for a long journey through France, Italy,Oostenrijk, Switzerland and Germany and returned to Holland three years later. He could afford it because of a huge inheritance of his grandmother that made it possible for him to devote his life to arts, culture and travel. He was raised in a conservative Royalist family, but at certain age felt sympathy for the democratic patriots-movement. He was very curious about the revolutionary Paris in those days and so it became his first destination. He took the usual route from Antwerp, Brussels, Valenciennes, Peronne and Roye. He would stay not less than two years in Paris and wrote a fascinating portrait of the city. He writes about the houses of the Parisians, about their fashion, their way of living , the bathing in the Seine and the inside of their homes, about food, religion etc. He also wrote about the political system of France, and about science and arts.

Op vrijdag 3 en zaterdag 4 oktober wordt in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, aan de oever van het IJ, de Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Na vier succesrijke en spraakmakende edities zal de antiquarenbeurs ook ditmaal worden georganiseerd door de Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren (NVvA) en de Bond van handelaren in Oude Boeken (BOB). Beursambassadeur Ewoud Sanders zal de beurs openen op vrijdag 3 oktober om 13.45 uur. Sanders vertelt over het antiquariaat van heden en verleden aan de hand van zijn boek De handel en wandel van de boekenjood. Op zaterdag 4 oktober vindt op de beursvloer de feestelijke uitreiking van de Boudewijn Buch-Prijs plaats. Deze prijs wordt uitgereikt aan iemand die zich onderscheiden heeft om het antiquarische boek onder de aandacht van een groot publiek te brengen. Vorig jaar werd Redmond Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hanlon tijdens een onderhoudende middag geĂŤerd. Bibliofiele drukkers, uitgevers, boekentijdschriften en letterkundige genootschappen delen hun laatste nieuwtjes en tonen hun laatste uitgaven. This year’s Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair will be held on Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4 in the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam. For the fifth time in a row both Dutch antiquarian booksellers associations, the NVvA and the BOB, are taking part in the fair, which will have up to 60 Dutch and foreign participants.

This year’s fair will be opened on Friday, October 3 at 1.45 pm by language historian and journalist Ewoud Sanders. On Saturday, October 5 at 3.00 pm the Boudewijn Buch-Prize will be awarded. This prize is awarded to someone who has brought antiquarian books to the attention of a large audience. Last year the Britisch writer and scholar Redmond O’Hanlon was honored during an entertaining afternoon with interesting speeches.
