WELCOME With the motto ‘JOIN OUR FREEDOM’ the City of Amsterdam welcomes you to our celebration of freedom. The freedom to be who you are and love whoever you like. Amsterdam supports gay men, lesbian women, bisexuals, transgenders and people with an intersex condition in their fight for equal rights and social acceptance. Every young person, every tourist and every Amsterdammer must know that being ‘different’ just adds to our city. It makes Amsterdam more beautiful, stronger and special. The municipality’s LGBTI policy, established in the Rainbow Agenda Implementation, firmly focuses on bisexuals, transgenders and people with an intersex condition. If necessary, there is consideration for the cultural backgrounds of Amsterdammers or people coming to Amsterdam. We seek connection, commonalities and ways to use differences to create a better society. This approach has not done Amsterdam any harm. Since the sixteenth century, Amsterdam has been a haven for free spirits and dissidents. The atmosphere of freedom at that time helped Amsterdam achieve enormous economic and cultural growth, enabling it to become the metropolis it is today. A city with 180 nationalities and unprecedented freedoms. A city that often leads the rest of the world when it comes to civil rights. Take civil marriage which became open to same-sex partners in 2001. For the first time anywhere, women could marry women and men could marry men in Amsterdam. A first that has since been emulated throughout the world. In conclusion, I would like to thank everyone who has made this Europride possible. I believe that the festivities, as well as the numerous conferences and meetings, will be an inspiration to the many visitors from all over the world. A EuroPride that makes us realise that everyone should be free and born with the same rights. In Amsterdam and everywhere else in the world.

CONCHITA WURST Conchita Wurst has a schedule that’s fully booked. The singer, fashion icon and LGBT activist has been extremely popular ever since she won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen. She’s travelled the world many times for concerts, TV appearances and prides, from Vienna to Sydney to Tel Aviv and back. And today she’s in Amsterdam for a short visit, also known as work. Dressed in a simple, yet beautiful black and white outfit by French designer Jean Paul Gaultier, she’s here for a photo shoot. A shoot which also marks the start of her ambassadorship for EuroPride 2016.

1994 In 1991 it was decided in the UK that, every year, a different European city would be tasked with organising and hosting the EuroPride event. As the ‘founding cities’ of EuroPride, London, Berlin and Amsterdam would start the ball rolling: London in 1992, Berlin in 1993 and Amsterdam in 1994. or ban the event entirely, as the city of Niksic in Montenegro experienced three times in the summer of 2015. It is difficult to brand prides as irrelevant when so many LGBTI activists are still struggling to hold them in the first place. No two prides are the same. You cannot untangle the event from the social, political and cultural context of its host city. EuroPride itself is still a very potent symbol and hosting it can send an unambiguous message. The notion that Amsterdam is hosting the event in 2016 is hardly ground-breaking – but the 2015 host city certainly was. Last year, Riga welcomed LGBTI people and allies from all over the world to the first EuroPride to ever take place in a former Soviet state. The Latvian capital held its first pride in 2005 and LGBTI activists were outnumbered by hundreds of protestors. Ten years later, over 5,000 people took part in the 2015 event, highlighting how pride events can be valuable evidence of the public appetite for social change.

Via Libanon I flew to Istanbul. But I couldn’t work or pick up my studies, and Syrians are heavily discriminated against. In short: I did not fit in. So I did some research and chose Holland as my final destination because of the political and sexual freedom.” He left Turkey by boat and paid a smuggler 2,200 euro to go to the Greek island Rhodos. “It was hell, the boat trip on a stormy day, a wild sea and no life vests and it was freezing cold. It was my worst experience ever. I will never in my whole life forget that. In Athens, I bought a fake ID and went by plane to Amsterdam. My God, I was so happy. It felt so unreal. Finally I was home in a country with absolute freedom. I felt at ease when I went to the customs to tell my story.” However, the long journey had just begun. He was sent to Ter Apel in the northern part of Holland. “The stay there was horrifying; I was shocked and I felt awful. Many nationalities with different cultural backgrounds are mixed in an asylum centre (AZC). It was a very bad situation. Because the other refugees knew I was gay, I was completely treated as an outcast. Abused, bullied and harassed because of my homosexuality. Once a guy said to me, “Hey you pussy, don’t make me mop the floor with your body.” It was deeply humiliating. So I went to the COA, which is the government organisation that is responsible for the reception, supervision and departure of asylum seekers. The COA transferred me to Zaandam so I could get some rest.” However, things became

even more difficult. He sighs and says: “The journey of my life is almost over. I am glad to be in the Netherlands where I can be myself. No longer fearing the government or police. Finally, my dream has come true. I am really looking forward to the EuroPride this summer. People who have freedom should start appreciating it, knowing there are people out there who are not free to be themselves. For what I have been through, I deeply understand

both because of the war and the fact that he could not be himself as a gay man. He had told his mother that he loved boys, but could not tell anyone else. “My family already had planned my future, having a wife and children. That was not a tempting idea. From my childhood, I knew I was different from the other boys. I felt very unsure and always had to lie about my sexuality. In Syria, I was sent to a psychiatrist who gave me pills so that my homosexuality would go away. But it did not work out that way, of course. I was born this way. The situation for LGBTs is very bad in Syria. The constitution says that everyone who is “abnormal” will be sentenced to three years in prison. Being gay means you are a criminal. Well, I knew that I didn’t have a future there, so I decided to leave my country.

15 YEARS OF SAME SEX MARRIAGE

Every love counts, the road to marriage equality

Recently I was at a party and a young woman asked me: ‘Is it true there was a time that gay and lesbian couples could not get married in the Netherlands?’ Kind of surprised by her question I nodded. ‘But that’s discrimination!’ she exclaimed. The social acceptance of marriage regardless of gender is high in the Netherlands. Even several members of parliament from the Christian party who voted against marriage equality at the time now admit they were led by fear. ‘If I could do it all over again, I would vote in favour’ one of them said publicly. I remember different times. When I was a member of the Dutch parliament and proposed marriage equality in 1994, the response was by and large negative. Not only the obvious opponents with religious-based arguments, but also the Dutch LGBT organization COC criticized me. ‘Marriage is an old fashioned institution. It goes against our gay life style. We should get rid of that heterosexual institution instead of reinforcing it.’ It took years for most people to understand that fundamental human rights like equality and non-discrimination also apply to legal recognition of relationships between two persons. 7 years later and after heated debates, in 2001 the first ever same-sex marriage law in the world came into effect. In the city hall of Amsterdam four gay and lesbian couples said ‘Yes, I do!’ and the world was watching. This is only 15 years ago.

Ansgar (41) Vincent (40) Jonathan (5) Benjamin (3) Charlotte (1) Ansgar: “Saturdays are more laidback, because we don’t have to work. I usually start with a run and come back with nice food from the bakery, including some chocolate pastries our kids love. We really take time to have breakfast together. In the morning and afternoon, we go out to play. When it’s nice we go to a playground. If the weather is bad we go to Minimarkt on Beethovenstraat, which is a children’s café where kids can play and parents have a cup of coffee. Our boys love to eat pizza on Saturday evenings. So we sometimes give in to that. It might look like we’re unhealthy eaters, but that’s not the case. Authentic Dutch Shopping with Elio Heres Elio won an Absolutely Fabulous award last year because of his extravagant fashion and nightlife looks. He left his strict religious family when he was sixteen and has learned the hard way that true happiness can only come from truly being who you want to be. This mindset is reflected in his limitless, extravagant, fabulous and androgynous looks. He took us on a spin through town to find some authentic Dutch fashion. Elio: I’m a true believer that people should wear whatever they believe is beautiful and will look beautiful on their bodies. I also fight conformity. People should accept other people for who they are, and not pigeonhole them. You’re here to celebrate the fact that people are free to do what makes them happy, regardless of their sexual orientation. Why can’t we apply the same freedom to fashion? You’re born male or female but you don’t get any say in that or your sexual preference. So why shouldn’t you wear a fashion garment that was originally intended for the opposite gender? Who cares which gender it was originally intended for? I hope you can share my freedom and just wear whatever you think is beautiful. Feel free to wear what you want, regardless of what people say.

46 EuroPride 2016

JOIN MY FASHION FREEDOM! The gay community is known for its unique and outlandish fashion, so it is hard to stand out. And we do love to make a statement! Already stressing about what to wear? You definitely want to wear something festive to show that you are as happy to be here as everybody else. Maybe you have an outfit in mind. But ask yourself, is it unique? Is it festive? If your answer is unsure or just a plain no, then let me help you. If your answer is an astonishing yes, I know you definitely want to know where to find more good stuff. A real vintage bitch – that’s what I like to call myself. Vintage makes me happy because most pieces are unique. You also give the clothes a new life. How fabulous is that! I love to stand out with some gorgeous statement designs by Dutch designers. I will give you a few tips about where to find some nice vintage shops and amazing clothes by Dutch designers. X-Bank is a gallery that recently opened on the ground floor and the store on the first floor is full of fabulous designs by Dutch designers. It may cost you the earth but you will walk out with a striking and unique Dutch design. De Negen Straatjes. This is one of my favourite shopping areas. It’s full of stylish fashion shops like PRJCT ams and vintage shops like Bij Ons Vintage, Episode, Laura Dolls and Lady Day. Designer Karl Lagerfeld has a shop there as well and you can drink lots of coffee and chill out in a cute little lunchroom when you are strolling through these nine lovely little streets. You can find fabulous fashion in more places than the city centre. You should definitely check out Lola Luid! in Amsterdam-West. Lola Luid! is a hotspot and pop-up mall with lots of vintage shops. It is also home to two of my favourite designers, the colourful and eclectic Sabine Staartjes and the masculine, tuff and chic Aziz Bekkaoui. Still time or money left? Visit the Pijp area where you’ll find two of my favourite vintage shops Het Kaufhaus and Marbles and Vintage. You can combine it with a stroll around the famous Albert Cuyp market and don’t forget to eat a sensational piece of pie at De Taart van m’n Tante (Auntie’s Pies). Let me know what you bought and how it looks on www.elioheres.com Koeskoes! Elio Heres Photos: Jeroen Ploeger

Arts Pride GET INSPIRED!

During Arts Pride, many museums, theatres, galleries and other cultural institutions in Amsterdam go pink. There are dozens of cultural activities taking place between 23 July and 7 August. COC’s Shakespeare Club at the Amsterdam Museum COC, the world’s oldest LGBT-organisation, celebrates its 70th anniversary with the Shakespeare Club, a central hangout during EuroPride. The Shakespeare Club takes place in the courtyard of the Amsterdam Museum in the city centre, and offers encounters, connections and culture: the leading forces behind change. The Shakespeare Club is open daily from 23 July until 7 August, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday until 11 p.m. The Shakespeare Club stages DJs, artists and initiatives from the LGBTI-community. Join us in celebrating a summer of diversity and enjoy with drinks and nibbles. #MOMENTSINTRANSITION On 29 March this year, Gabriella Dania used Instagram to share her story about finding her gender identity. ”I was highly depressed, felt trapped, unhappy and fucking low. It took a while for sure. I was just a gay boy experimenting with my image, but now I’m a transitioning woman, almost getting to the next step of major surgery that I never imagined would be on the cards. I went through a lot of struggles but my struggles made me a confident woman.” Thousands of transgenders all over the world have since shared their stories, using before and after photographs on social media. #MomentsinTransition. THE GENERATION THAT FOUGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM Upcoming EuroPride we celebrate the tenth edition of the ever popular Senior Pride Concert at the Paleis van de Weemoed theatre restaurant. On top of that over 40 events will take place at several Amsterdam nursing homes. More and more homes for the elderly organize activities specifically aimed at LGBTI inhabitants. A good thing, for it's not always that easy for elderly LGBTI people to be open about their sexuality or gender identity in nursing homes. We spoke with two residents.

I’M ACTUALLY QUITE PROUD THAT THINGS ARE DIFFERENT FROM WHEN I FIRST CAME HERE Interview with Nanda (73) Lives in age-friendly housing at Humanitas in Rotterdam I liked it here from the start, from the day I first came to look around. The atrium was huge, and so light; with everybody sitting around chatting. I told my son I wouldn’t mind living here. I had been ‘out’ for years. I was married twice. My first husband and I divorced in 1972, because something wasn’t quite right. I just didn’t know what at the time. I didn’t know that I preferred women. The penny dropped in the early eighties, when I divorced for the second time and moved in with my girlfriend. I have two children from each of my marriages, and two from my relationship with my partner. The sperm bank refused to help us; they said I was too old. I was 43 and my partner was 25. They said she should enjoy my children and grandchildren. So we decided to arrange things ourselves. She had one child fathered by my son and one by my niece’s husband. Since I’ve been here I’ve made no secret of the fact that I prefer women. I did run into some resistance at first. People telling me I didn’t belong here, calling me a dyke… That sort of stuff. They used to ram my legs with their walkers. It was around that time that I was asked to help with a book about what it was like for someone like me from the post-war generation to come out in Rotterdam. I met other gays and that gave me courage. That was when I thought: Damn the lot of them! I am Nanda. I like people but I prefer women and if they can’t accept that, it’s their problem, not mine. I asked the Humanitas management if I could organise something for pink seniors. We brainstormed and came up with an idea for a Pink Café on Friday afternoons. At first I found myself sitting alone at a table in a corner of the atrium – just waiting. But after a while, someone joined me – a bit cautiously at first – then someone else. Most of them lived outside this facility. Six months later, there were between fifteen and twenty of us. Then more came along and soon we were a thriving community. We started a choir and organised all sorts of activities, we even put on shows. Humanitas has been awarded a Pink Passkey in recognition of its LGBTinclusive environment in its care of the elderly. I’m actually quite proud that things are different from when I first came here. Recently our Pink Café has been getting just a bit too outgoing. Sometimes we forget to show consideration for our straight neighbours. It’s hard to strike the right balance sometimes. Texts: Eric Kollen Photos: Martijn Gijshertsen

I really want to do more for the community. That’s why I started the Rainbow Awards, an award for the most outstanding LGBT achievements, and that’s also why I want to be an ambassador. It would be wonderful if I could empower a bigger group this way. And if I can make LGBTs more visible, that would be even better. Visibility is the most important thing. The less gays, lesbians and drag queens you see on the street, the more it becomes strange. When people see you out and proud it becomes more normal. LGBTs should be able to be themselves without any nasty consequences like getting hit in the face because you’re walking hand in hand with your lover. You know yourself that being visible as a gay man does come at a price sometimes. Last year you had two violent encounters on the streets of Amsterdam because of who you are. True, but it’s the first time that something like that has happened to me, and in my case I think it wasn’t just homophobia. There are young people hanging on the street, who have nothing to do. They get drunk. They

The second major breakthrough happened in 2008, with the publication of the Swiss Statement, which reported that successful treatment also has an impact on infectiousness. In other words, if you are taking medication to halt the progress of the HIV virus you can no longer infect another person. So treatment for HIV also prevents HIV. Safe sex took on a new meaning with the advent of PrEP, which became available in the US in 2012. We are lagging far behind with implementation in the Netherlands. The HIV field was at first suspicious of this valuable addition to the anti-HIV arsenal, but the tide appears to have turned and the AIDS Fund, COC and the HIV Association are all in favour of bringing PrEP to the Netherlands. Hopefully it will be licensed next year and the 1,000 new cases that are annually diagnosed can be drastically reduced. The pressure to make PrEP available is coming from the community in the form of the PrEPnu Action Group, established by Poz&Proud, which is sailing in the PrEP boat in this year’s Canal Parade during EuroPride. It is no surprise that gays with HIV are heading the campaign for PrEP. They know it will help to get rid of the stigma. PrEP also serves as the medication known as Truvada, which people with HIV take for their health and people without HIV take for protection. PrEP will take us a step further towards ending the HIV epidemic, but on its own, PrEP is not enough. More is needed. New HIV infections come from people who have recently contracted the virus and pass it on without their knowledge. In Amsterdam efforts are underway to identify these acute HIV cases. The prevention message is now: get yourself tested regularly, if the result is positive start treatment immediately, because then you can stop the virus in its tracks and you will not pass it on. If we are really serious about ridding ourselves of HIV as a community, we must shed the shame that still hangs over it. Only when we shake off the shame, guilt and prejudice will we find true liberation and be able to look beyond HIV. Riek Stienstra, the now deceased former director of the Schorer Foundation once said to me that there will come a Safe sex guerilla

Almost 22 million people living with HIV don’t have access to life-saving treatment. At the same time we all ‘suffer’ from luxury problems. What if we could make our luxury problems more valuable than ever before? What if they could save a life? The proceedings of the First World Problem Pills are used to give people access to real HIV medication that saves their lives. Medicine for medicine. The idea that intersex is a social problem and not a medical one has been endorsed by governments outside the Netherlands for some time. We are only at the start of that process. But we can follow the example of Malta, for example, where the medicalisation of intersex is prohibited by law. We’re still trailing behind in the Netherlands, but I’m expecting a lot of changes in the years ahead Why and when did you decide to be a human rights advocate for people with intersex? I can’t remember the exact moment. In 2003 I took part in a TV programme – watched by an audience of almost one million. That was my coming-out and it probably marked the start of my work as a human rights advocate. But I was negotiating with doctors most of the time. Around 2006 I realised that I had been doing that for years to no avail. That was when it struck me that something else had to happen. Even then, it took ages before I made contact with the appropriate human rights organisations. Somehow or other, we managed to Miriam van der Have is director and founder of Stichting Nederlands Netwerk Intersekse/DSD (NNID, Netherlands Intersex /DSD Network Foundation) and Co-Chair of OII Europe. IN THE PAST, A WIDE ARRAY OF CULTURES AND RELIGION BOATS HAVE TAKEN PART IN THE CANAL PARADE. WHAT WAS THEIR AIM AND HOW DID THEY BENEFIT FROM PARTICIPATION?

Turkish boat Year of participation: 2012 Organiser: Initiative of Döne Fil and Serdar Manavoglu, supported by the Elance Foundation. Aim: To enhance the visibility and strengthen the voice of Turkish LGBTs and maintain the focus on the debate. Result: A lot of media coverage and, regrettably, many negative responses. But the Turkish LGBT community was very glad that they were represented and that the boat participated. Young Turkish adults found people to talk to and no longer feel alone. Holy Boat Year of participation: 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Organiser: LCC (Plus) Projects, an alliance of three, and later five Christian LGBT organisations. Aim: Give visibility to Christian LGBTs. Show the wider LGBT community and the churches that the combination of LGBT and the Christian religion is no longer a problem for the people on the boat. You can be both holy and happy as LGBTs. Result: Attention in church and non-church media. We have become much more visible. We have been invited several times by churches or church organisations to share advice on LGBT questions. A lot more doors are open now than before.

92 EuroPride 2016

Dushi & Proud (Kingdom Boat) Year of Participation: 2015 Organiser: LGBT organisations Alternative Lifestyle Foundation Aruba, St. Martin Alliance for Equality and Curacao Pride Aim: To draw attention to unequal legislation and regulations for LGBTIs within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. To highlight the huge differences between the countries in the kingdom as a result of different cultural backgrounds. Result: Enormous exposure and visibility for the LGBTI community in the Caribbean part of the kingdom, momentum to bring the theme to the attention of the public via dialogue, debates and the documentary One Kingdom One Love. Moroccan boat Year of participation: 2014 Organiser: Initiator Ilias Zian in association with Stichting Art.1 Chris Belloni. Aim: To increase the visibility of Dutch-Moroccan LGBTs and start the debate; can you be a Dutch Moroccan, a Muslim and LGBT? Result: An educational programme in more than 50 classrooms. Dutch-Moroccan LGBTs came into contact, friendships were established and new role models were found. Jewish boat Year of participation: 2014 Organiser: Stichting Exodays, founded by Gideon Querido van Frank. Aim: To express pride and visibility. The boat trip was part of a weekend for LGBTQ Jews and their friends. Collective exploration, realisation and celebration of our background as Jews and LGBTQs. Result: Visibility in national and international media, support for Jewish LGBTQ youth who are wrestling with their orientation. A stronger international network of Jewish LGBTQs and a vision for the future. Hindustani boat Year of participation: 2011 Organiser: Stichting SaVo Aim: To lift the taboo of homosexuality in the Hindustani community. Result: Experience as an organisation of dealing in depth with this theme. Reaching the community and beyond. And the increasing courage of people, especially young people, in contacting us.

CELEBRATE EUROPRIDE WITH A RAINBOW OF CHOIRS

AmaSing Choir Festival Music highlights and promotes emancipation and diversity in a universally accessible manner. It is with this in mind that AmaSing Choir Festival, founded by Amsterdam-based choirs Manoeuvre and Galakoor, is organising the European Choir Festival par excellence as part of the EuroPride celebrations. Fourteen European choirs – from classical to pop – will perform on 4 August and then come together for a mind-blowing musical event in the Amsterdam Concertgebouwon 5 August.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? A rich array of music: some will challenge the stereotyped image of gays, some will not. The LGBT musical scene is rich and diverse. Take, for example, the camp culture and the Comedian Harmonists, still a source of inspiration for many gay men’s choirs. There is also a more serious and classical genre, represented by The Fourth Choir from London. AmaSing features a wide variation of styles and levels – male choirs, female choirs, mixed choirs in all age groups.

PROGRAM Thursday 4 August You can watch and listen to the choirs all over the city. In the streets, in parks, at cultural hotspots, in businesses and offices. Friday 5 August

That kind of behaviour is totally out of order in 2016! And, just for the record, in case you were thinking otherwise, the assailants were indigenous white males. The pattern of events is not new. I have noticed before that lesbians are tolerated if they are pretty and feminine (in fact, plenty of straight men fantasise about them) but those who are not seem to awaken aggression, which apparently makes some men resort to fisticuffs, the excuse being: if you look like a bloke, you should fight like a bloke! But when I hear about incidents like these I realise beyond a shadow of a doubt that we need to continue for at least another twenty-five years. We are needed! Two women or two men should be able to walk along the street holding hands in a loving relationship without fear and without running into sexism or intolerance. Also in the middle of the night!! TARA MCDONALD EuroPride 2016 Anthem - ‘I Need a Miracle’ For the EuroPride Anthem we have the privilege to work with UK artist Tara McDonald. The extravagant Queen of Dance will be performing at several outdoor stages during our EuroPride festival. Please tell us something about Tara I’m a singer/songwriter signed with Mercury/Universal, music is my first love. I’m also a music manager - my company is called Give Me More Music - I’ve just signed my first 2 artists with Warner and Universal. I’m an animal lover obsessed with my white miniature Schnauzer Annie. I’m a vegetarian and recently developed a big love of vegan cooking. I’ve been called the Queen of Dance. Where is my crown? What does ‘equal rights’ mean to you? Equal rights for me is such an important issue, I believe anything less than equality is an insult!. It’s unjust to give a selected few preferential treatment, we are all human after all! Everybody deserves to be treated fairly, equally and not judged or held back by their race, sexual orientation, gender or religion. This is an issue I will spend my life campaigning for, until the laws are changed to protect and implement this and for all the countries around the world to unite and have the same global vision for equality. What is the message of your song ‘I Need A Miracle’? Last year I performed at the Bataclan to raise money for the PRIDE event in Paris, 2 months prior to the terrorist attack at the same venue. I was in the very same dressing rooms where you saw people hanging from the windows! It was a very strange feeling and I felt that I wanted to release a song about hope for the future, the world needs a miracle! I had grown up listening, dancing and loving the Fragma version of “I Need A Miracle” the lyrics about accepting nothing less than a deeper love really struck a chord and resonated with me. FOOD & DRINKS

Yummy, yummy, yummy, I’ve got love in my tummy! Text: Marco Hohl

When I was asked to write an article about fun places to eat and drink in Amsterdam, I immediately said yes because I love food. Amsterdam has a gazillion places to eat and drink, but I managed to select five spots that are LGBT friendly or owned and that offer great food. Some of these places are in every tourist guide, because they’re simply amazing, and others are little gems known only by locals. Hungry yet for one thing or the other? Keep on reading! (Oh, and on a side note: I’m one of those nasty vegetarians, but my fiancé is a regular meat eater. So every restaurant has one of my favourites and one of my lover’s favourites listed.)
