Proposal on Formulating a National Progress Index Establish a “Stakeholder Matrix” to clearly show the stakeholders in every dimension Developing a National Progress Index will require the involvement of many people. ThaiHealth has brought together many agencies, both public and private, who are interested in this subject and concerned to see its success, or that carry some responsibility in terms of collecting statistics or organizing development together with technocrats, media networks, and civil society networks. ThaiHealth has tried to mobilize people to express their opinions in formulating this index. This is a good practice that I also agree with.
hai Health has the support of the government to develop an indicator that is able to measure Thailand’s real development. In the past, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was used to measure economic growth. However, using GDP as a measurement may not reflect income distribution, social welfare provision or environmental problems caused by economic development, and it cannot demonstrate social However, I think that ThaiHealth’s method to equality or generosity. include stakeholders may not cover all appropriate stakeholders. In addition, I’d like to suggest that there should be a synchronization process that balances information, both top-down and bottom-up. The information from the committee and other associates should be mutually shared online& real time via the medium of information technology, so that both sides can access useful information at all times. Another important point is that pushing the future-time formulation agenda for the National Progress Index importantly orders a good time frame for driving the issue. Now, we are at a political juncture. The committee should monitor the situation closely to see when this proposal will be driven furthest. I believe that such a time will come soon.
As this conference was just a first meeting, it will take a long time before the index will become visible. During this time, it is my hope that Thai Society will be driven continuously into a better position through all sectors participating in the process to formulate a Apart from this, I think that creating some National Progress Index. ‘amthai’

The Monarchic Institution in Thailand In 1534 Somdej Phra Chairajathiraj was crowned the 13th king of Ayutthaya capital, the king won his crown by conquest. While he was on the throne, it was the first time Thailand had gone to war with Burma. In 1538 the Burmese king, King Tabengchavety of Hongsavadi capital, moved his troops to fight Chiangkran, West of Ayutthaya capital. Somdej Phra Chairajathiraj with his army squashed and defeated Burma. When the war was finished he rewarded the volunteer Portugees soldiers who were expert in gun fire and skilful at fighting, by giving them the land to build houses, called “Barn Portugal” or Portugal village, as well as to build a Catholic Church in Thailand (Siam) for the first time.

Art Has No Boundaries

While the clashes between the ThaiCambodian armies over the “imaginary” border has attracted a world-wide attention and stirred nationalistic discourses from both sides, a group of young Cambodian circus artists made their recent visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand to deliver the message that war is absolutely terrible..
Distant Haze istant Haze depicts a story of a girl named Sokha (lit. Healthy), who is traumatised by the tortured and horrified experience during the Khmer Rouge. Her daily life is always haunted by the horrible past and this endless fear never seem to disappear. Until one day Sokha is saved by a foster parent whose love and kindness bring her comfort and eventually become a remedy for her to overcome the pain of the past. Realising that there are countless Cambodian children who suffer the same plight, Sokha returns to her homeland on a mission to help healing their wounds.
D
Through the spectacle of circus, dance, shadow play, and theatre, a group of the 3rd generation performers of PPS’s circus school bought us harrowing memories of war and its destruction to human. Scenes of childhood happiness are presented with various circus acts: acrobatics, balancing, juggling and wheeling. Another scene, for example, in the scene where danger looms and the war erupted, circus skills like contortion and tightrope walking are used in order to express human suffering and fear. In one particular scene when Sokha determines to end her fear, the performer displays her highly skill of contortion by shooting an arrow to the heart- shape ballon with her feet!
The show was followed by a workshop to some seventy young participants, to try several circus acts: juggling, balancing, contortion, acrobatics, and diabolo deals. Piyashat Sinpimonboon, an organiser at CNX Art Connex, who invited PPS to Chiang Mai noted that PPS members’ personal backgrounds and success can be a source of inspiration for young Thai juveniles to learn from: “PPS was actually founded after the end of Khmer Rouge war. Members and founders of the PPS are the living proof that they survived the war. Moreover, many of the young practitioners also experienced numerous kinds of troubles - some were street children, some invloved in stealing, some came from broken homes, some lost their self-esteem, etc. But with their passion in circus and rigorous training, they successfully overcome their problems and drawbacks,” she said.
Human Dialogue During their Chiang Mai visit, PPS staged a show and conducted a circus workshop for young juveniles aged 14-18 years old at the Regional Juvenile Vocational Training Center 7 Chiang Mai (RJVTC)
Teenagers who were trained at PPS now become talented circus artists who can earn a living for their families and receive respect. “They should be given an opportunity to share their experience with our youngsters who have similar backgrounds. It is great that RJVTC understood our mission and invited the group to perform and conduct a workshop there.” Piyashat added.
The Distant Haze performance received a very warm welcome by a very large enthusiastic young audiences, both male and female, who gathered around an outdoor open space. Despite no safety equipments and proper lighting and sounds effect, Pin Phounam, a 19 year-old leading perthe show proceeded with full energy and former of the group and who takes on thrilled so many fainted hearts. the role of Sokha accepted that since joining circus many years ago, her life
(photos Piyashat Sinpimonboon)
has been improved dramatically: “I came from a very poor family and a terrible background. Since I joined the circus, I found myself getting strong physically and mentally. To be able to practice in the circus arts, you need three things: some natural talent, hard- working mentality, and concentration - I believe I have all qualities. Performing circus boosts my confident, at the same time, I can earn some money. Moreover, since we developed better skills, we could participate in International competitions. By presenting in International stages, we gain recognition and thereby many benefits follow. These are reasons I decided to learn the circus arts.” Whether the group of young artists from Battambang managed to raise our awareness about human sufferings as a result of war or to entertain us with the beauty of circus and visuality of the craft, we all agreed that we both speak the same language - the language of humanity and peace. Art has no boundaries and so the human souls. In the last scene, we were reminded of the importance of peace, as a young man read out his poem to the dying Sokha : “Do notdistress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. Keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. I wish, all the people in the world, especially the children,
will have peace physically, mentally and socially.” Chiang Mai residents certainly enjoyed and appreciated the recent visit of the PPS circus group. The timing of their visit could not have been better. In the end, perhaps, it is not the ugliness of war that Distant Haze brings to our attention. But, the celebration of human spirits, peace, and the courage to re-emerge from our own abyss of fear. That positive message is what Sokha is whispering in our hearts. CNX Art Connex is initiated aiming to act as a bridge that connects art works, artists, communities, environment, as well as, art related concepts and knowledge altogether. Our mission is to bring together artists, art learners, audiences, communities, and art related organizations in Chiang Mai. With your kind support and suggestions, we would one day become a real strong bridge. Thai restaurant in Brick Lane restaurant review Sponsored by
Tiger Beer
Brick Lane is steeped in history. Nearby Hanbury Street is where Jack the Ripper claimed one of his victims several hundred years ago, but these days the East End is unrecognisable from what it once was. Nowadays, Brick Lane is renowned for beigels, Beyond Retro and Bombay-style cuisine. I visit nearly every week to stock up on chopped herring beigels, and to beg my mother to buy me nice things, but it’s probably the last place in London you’d expect a Thai restaurant to pop up. However, in the last three months, there has been a change in the area. A nondescript place I never went into has been closed and replaced with a brand new Thai restaurant. Being curious, I naturally had to try it out.
first impression, it does not really stand out from the crowd, but you have to look closer. As you walk inside, you will immediately notice the Northern Thai influences – the tables and chairs are carved out of teak wood, and perhaps you will hear a traditional Northern song playing in the background.
We recommend that you visit this restaurant in the day time, as it is not so busy then and there is a very nice set lunch menu on offer. We originally ordered the set menu, and the starters that arrived were satay kai (chicken satay), and peek kai yad sai (chicken wings with vermicelli and minced chicken stuffing). Although the satay kai was a little bit too dry, the peek kai yad sai made up for it as the spices compleinkao restaurant sits right in the mented the chicken meat perfectly. heart of Brick Lane, directly opposite the Brick Lane Market Barclays Cycle At this point, I decided to not continue Hire stand, and a few minutes walk away with the set menu, as I had opened the from Shoreditch High Street station. On menu to find my favourite dish, seafood

issues as soon as we tasted the food, however. The yam pla salmon was not too spicy or too sour, and the hoh mok tasted almost exactly like the ones you would eat in Thailand. Thanks to the large portion sizes, we were too full for dessert.
On arrival, we were slightly annoyed to discover that the rice they had served us was broken rice as they did not mention this in the menu. Also, the seafood hoh mok was advertised as being served in a young coconut, but turned up wrapped in foil instead. We soon forgot about these
If you are in Brick Lane and are looking for something different, we highly recommend Kinkao restaurant. The food has a traditional Thai taste that not many Thai restaurants here have, and is located in a very promising area of London. We look forward to visiting it again in the future. ‘amthai’

In the reign of Somdej Phra Yod Pha there were several important events such as in 1546 there was an earthquake, the same year as his coronation. In 1548 he went out to the field and ordered an elephant fright, the tusk of his elephant was broken into 3 pieces, and in the evening another of his elephants was weeping. Also the palace door made a noise, this was a sign of bad luck. In the same year Phraya Mahasana (a member of the peerage) was murdered, because he knew the secrets m hai’ mt of Taao Srisudajan and Khun Voravongsathiraj. ‘aamt
