The Monarchic Institution in Thailand part 28: Chakri Dynasty
Defence of the country
If the Thai kingdom (Siam) had had no freedom it would not have been possible to develop the country. So King Buddha Yodfa (King Rama I) strongly defended the Thai kingdom. He used various strategies to fight with his enemies, particularly with Burma. When Thailand was at war, he went out to ambush or attack the enemy army before the army came to fight, this could cut the energy of the enemy and make it easy to defeat them. He usually invaded the enemy rather than defending himself. That is why when he went to war he always won the combat.
T
he big enemy of Thailand was Burma. In the reign of King Buddha Yodfa, Thailand was at war with Burma 7 times: The first war was in 1785. This significant war was called “Nine armies war”. The Burmese king wanted to defeat Thailand by sending 144,000 soldiers divided into 9 troops from the

North to the South, while King Buddha Yodfa had 70,000 soldiers, but in the end Thailand won this war. The second war was “Ta Din Dang war” in 1786. When Burma lost the war with Thailand, This time the Burmese fought for 3 days, but the Burmese lost again. This result made Thailand larger than ever Chakri before. The third war was in 1787. After the Burmese lost the war to Thailand, many Burmese colonies tried to free themselves. The Burmese king moved his troops to war and attacked them, including Lom Paang and Pha Saang of Thailand in the Northern Thailand region. Thailand sent 60,000 soldiers to war and won the war. The fourth war was in 1787. It took place in Tavoy, but both troops were withdrawn.
There might have been a fifth war in 1793, in Burma, The 3 rulers of Tavoy, Tanow-si, and Marid, the Burmese colonials wanted to be loyal to Thailand. King Buddha Yodfa sent his troops to protect them, Burmese king knew and moved his troops to attack his colonials rulers, later the colonials changed their minds and Dynasty wanted to be with Burma again. This time there was no fight. The sixth war was in 1797 in Chiang Mai, and Thailand defeated the Burmese. The seventh war was in 1802. Thailand won the war with Burma again.
ship with Laos as well as Cambodia and Yuon.
Administration
King Buddha Yodfa’s administration of Krung Rattanakosin (Bangkok) was similar to that in the reign of King Borom Trilokanath, the Ayutthaya period. He was the supreme administrator of the country, the second was the viceroy. He divided it into the department of defence, (the head of the department was also a royal advisor) and the department of the interior, this department administered the civic welfare. The government’s affairs were divided into 4 departments or Krom. They were: Krom Veang - which dealt with civic affairs. Krom Vang - which dealt with the laws of the state. Krom Klang - which dealt with King Buddha Yodfa used his wisdom to financial affairs, and deal with foreign policy, to be friends with Krom Na - which was concerned neighbours with whom to get and to give continue to page 21 policy. This could make a good relation-

amthaiAbhisit London visit By: Patcharin Wongsatien
Abhisit Vejjajiva, the former prime minister, arrived in England one day after he was informed by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) that he was to be charged with murder over the death of a taxi driver shot by soldiers during 2010 Bangkok protests against his government.
D
uring his visit, Mr.Abhisit and Korn Chatikavanij, his former finance minister who was named Finance Minister of the Year 2010 by the Financial Times, gave a talk to students at University College London (December 9). Mr.Abhisit, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oxford University, said he would go back to Thailand to formally accept the charge and would respect the judicial process and the court verdict. However, he urged his opponent, Thaksin Shinawatra, the ousted former prime minister, to do the same. “If the court finds me guilty, finds khun Suthep [Thueksuban, who faces the same charge] guilty, the biggest punishment they can hand to me is the death penalty…That is the verdict of the court. I’m willing to accept [that ] because I want to show that all politicians must be under the law…All we’re asking from the government is the former prime minister does the same ,” said Abhisit. Mr.Thaksin, who is said to be one of the most influential and divisive figures in Thai politics, skipped bail and fled into exile after the Supreme Court found him guilty of corruption and handed him a two-year jail sentence if he returns to Thailand. He was convicted in absentia on a conflict-of-interest charge. In his talk, Mr.Abhisit stressed that peace and reconciliation in Thai society can only be achieved if the government, and Mr.Thaksin, brother of Yingluck Shinawatra , the prime minister, respect the rule of law.
“The court has already passed a verdict on the corruption charges, so go back and serve your sentence,” Mr.Abhisit said in remarks directed at Mr.Thaksin. “You have the right to seek a pardon, and that will be within the King’s power to grant that pardon. But you have to show that you accept the rule of law. If the government were to do that, the way we’re accepting the judicial process, that is the way that we can achieve reconciliation. That’s the way in which we can restore politics as it should be in our maturing and still vibrant democracy.” Mr.Abhisit said. “Imagine what happens if the government decides to rewrite the constitution or pass laws simply to grant amnesty to the former prime minister. That’s not how you seek true reconciliation… that is not how to allow democracy to mature and grow. That is just continuing with the same old the conflicts and perpetuating this cycle of violence and protest and street politics,” said Mr.Abhisit.
government policies could hamper Thailand ’s economic potential especially when Asia-Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region in the world.
reputation of Thai rice as farmers have an incentive to grow low quality rice to cash in on the scheme. O
pened in 2004, Yauatcha is a fantastic restaurant by Alan Yau, famous for Asian fusion cuisine. They serve delicious dim sum throughout the day. Traditional dishes such as har gau and prawn cheung fun are served along with modern ones such as venison puff, scallop shu, maienoki mushroom dumpling, and pork and prawn shu mai . Nation Branding in the 21st Century (2)
Last time, I have partially written about “Nation Branding in the 21st Century” which was a topic I spoke at International Conference on marketing or IBA-ICM 2012 hosted by Institute of Business Administration in Karachi, Pakistan. This week, I will explain more about the topic.
B
randing a Nation in 21st century will be different from the present. Apart from the increasing objectives, broader limits and various kinds of tools, there are a number of things which have been changed.
More partnerships: More stakeholders will participate in nation branding In the past, state agencies such as the tourism agency or Board of Investment were accountable for nation branding. However, in the 21st century; nation branding will not be only a responsibility of state agencies, people both in the country and from other countries will also be able to proactively participate in nation branding. In addition, private sectors will become more engaged in the process via Public Private Partnership (PPP). This will happen because the democracy ideology has become widespread. It has created political value. Every country must be democratic like the western countries. This causes people to become more aware of political participation which in turn causes increased democracy in the country. There are more expressions of opinion via the telephone or internet. People are eager to participate in shaping the direction of the country. They want to be a part of the policy decision making process. They are more willing to organize a political movement concerning public policies that relate to them.
To illustrate this point, in Slovenia, the government hired a private company to help organize a market research-study-based campaign that would survey members of the public and obtain their input and feedback. In Mexico City, the Tourism branch of Mexico City announced a contest to design the brand identity of the city. The contest was open to the general public and offered 1 million Pesos (approximately $75,000 U.S. Dollars) as the grand prize. The contest received generous media coverage and publicity because it was not limited to residents of Mexico City, citizens of other states and other countries were encouraged to participate. In the USA, “Brand USA”, a non-profit organization, public-private partnership (PPP), was set up to launch a global advertising campaign as part of the country’s concerted effort in marketing tourism to the world. The core mission of the organization, created in 2010, is to “encourage and inspire travelers to explore America’s boundless possibilities”. More global responsibility: A successful nation branding program must incorporate goodness into nation brands I have proposed a concept of 7 waves of social revolution. The 0th wave is a nomadic society. The 1st wave is an agricultural society.

The 2nd wave is an industrial society. The 3rd wave is an information society. The 4th wave is a knowledge – based society. The 5th wave is a wisdom society. The 6th wave is a virtue society. The world in the 21st century will be a virtue society where people are interested in goodness. This is consistent with the concept of marketing 3.0 of Kotler (2010) who said that consumers in the 21st century would change. In the past, marketing experts once looked at the target as normal consumers; they emphasized products and services that only satisfied emotional needs. But the marketing experts in the next era must look at the consumers as perfect humans consisting of minds, hearts and spirits. Thus, consumers will seem to start looking for things that make the world more pleasant. So, the consumers will look for a company that has the vision, mission and the value that can satisfy their highest economic, social and environmental needs. Consumers will want a product not only because of its function, but also because it is able to fulfill their spiritual needs. We can see in the business sector that companies have engaged more in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and the number of social entrepreneurs has increased significantly. At the same time, we can see investors, tourists and skilled labors are seeking the place that has the vision, the mission and the value that are able to fulfill their spiritual needs. For this reason, in the 21st century, nation branding has to give priority to the virtue aspect. A country has to engage in the national global responsibility (NGR) activity which is similar to a company engaging in the CSR activity. Therefore, a country that is interested in the environment, society or the global community will be more attractive. For example, Bhutan positions itself clearly and uniquely by giving high priority to goodness, the spiritual aspect and responsibility to the global community. Bhutan has used natural resources without exploitation of the earth and has measured its development using Gross National Happiness (GNH), instead of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is an emphasis on spiritual development more so than materialistic development. More Effectiveness: The effectiveness of a nation branding program has to be measured Because nation branding has become more important and it is a part of public policy, it has to be measured. In the 21st century, politics will be more transparent because there will be increased participation by the people in the check and balance process. Additionally, marketing is going to be the “Return on Investment (ROI) Marketing Era” as Kotler (2010) mentioned in the concept of marketing 3.0. Every business organization and every country has to spend their budget economically. The return on investment will be the main topic that the executives in every organization and every country give priority.

Therefore, in the 21st century, the effectiveness of the nation branding campaign/program has to be measured more clearly. Nowadays, there are many indicators relating to nation branding such as the Nation Brands Index (NBI) which surveys 20,000 consumers from twenty countries to rank 50 countries or the East West Global Index 200 that follows the national news from the international media and indicates the proportion of positive and negative news reported about these countries. Nevertheless, both indicators which are popular in nation branding are perception surveys. They do not measure the efficiency or the effectiveness of the nation branding program. How to measure the effectiveness of nation branding in achieving its stated goals is still a question for further and ongoing research. More refined focus: It will be more difficult to establish brand identity in nation branding In the future, to brand a nation will be very difficult. This is because there are about 238 countries around the world. One region might consist of many countries, geographies, and histories that are similar. Also, in the 21st century, there will be a cultural globalization and hybridization that will cause many countries to have similar uniqueness and there might be competition in using some identities. Therefore, a country that comes later in building their brand will find it very difficult to position itself in the global stage. To illustrate, there are many countries on the African continent that try to claim that their country is the “Heart of Africa”. However, the first country which used this concept as its position is Malawi. Then, Nigeria also tried to create their new nation brand with the idea of the “Heart of Africa”. However, that attempt by Nigeria was not successful because that positioning had already been used. For this reason, to brand a nation in the 21st century, a country must emphasize its uniqueness and position itself differently from other countries. To conclude, nation branding will be more important in the future and there will be many changes in objectives, scopes, tools used in branding a nation, partnerships with who is involved in the process, how to measure the efficiency and effectiveness, finding the identity of the nation or even the increasing dimensions about the accountability of the global society. So, the state that is interested in nation branding should understand these changes for the benefit of their own countries in the future. ‘amthai’

Amthai: how do you feel about your performance in this concert? Hucky: Fantastic, I feel great. This concert was very special to me because it was a concert for His Majesty the King’s 84th birthday. The concert was dedicated to His Majesty at his 7th cycle of his birthday so I chose 7 compositions by His Majesty which I think are the most popular. There’ re also other music, other Thai classical music and Thai folk song. Some are related to the film I did for the Royal Highness Princess Mother. I focused the whole programme around His Majesty the king and it was a very special thing for me to do here in London. The audience was wonderful, the hall was wonderful, and the sound was very nice. It was very enjoyable to play. It’s a totally different thing when you focus on one composer. The people were very nice and concentrated on listening very carefully to every note I played. So, it’s different challenge to play in the Taste of Thai. Amthai: How did you get to know our King Bhumibol? Hucky: I have lived in Thailand for 32 years. I went to play my classical guitar concert with the classical western music. When people made applause I wasn’t quite sure that they’re really understood the music but they’re very polite. I thought if I stay in Thailand I should find the way to play music that people really enjoy it. I originally had a contract in Thailand teaching music for 2 years from 1979. My first was job was a professorship in Manila for 2 years at the University of Philippines. Then I was supposed to go back to take a professorship in Stuttgart , Germany. After going back to Europe from Asia it was quite a shock. Then
there’s alternative been a scratch in Bangkok and I love that challenge. So I joined a department in Chulalongkorn University. That time it wasn’t Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts but Faculty of Education. At the moment I only teach master class at Mahasarakarm University. Unfortunately I don’t have time to teach regularly. Back then I still did a tour every year through Thailand. That time I was quite shocked as there’re only 3 people who could play classical guitar. Basically, the classical guitar was totally unknown. I discussed with all my friends. At the time there’s a very small group of musicians and we all know each other like Danu Huntakul, Surasri Ittikul, Assanee Chotikul, etc. This small group of people met and sat together every day. They all said that if you really want the guitar to be known you have to play the music by His Majesty the King. But I had no idea at that time. It was not so easy to listen because it’s hard to find any recording. But every Friday afternoon the King was playing on the radio. So I could listen from the radio. The more I listened the more I like his music and the more I realized that it suits so well to the guitar. It’s such a sweet and soft character of the music and the sound of the guitar are very similar, it could merge together very well. When I was ready it was 2-3 months so I asked the permission from His Majesty the King and to my big surprised I get permission in 2 days. I should do it before the visiting of the king of Belgium who was about to visit Thailand in 1981. Everybody was working very hard. My friends were arranging upstairs, my first studio in Thailand was the Butterfly and I was recording downstairs. Within 10 days we had the album ‘One Night’ (¤×¹Ë¹Öè§) ready. It wasn’t on CD but on cassette. ‘One Night’, my first album, was a selection of 10 pieces of His Majesty the King. There was only one record company, Peacock Record, who sold it. My big surprise was it sold like hot cakes 700,000 copies in a very short time. Within no time the sound of the classical guitar was known because of the music of His Majesty the King. Everybody know the king music. That was fantastic experienced . Later on I did the other album with ÍÑÊ¹Õ called Kamka Kamka (¡ÑÁ¡ŒÒ ¡ÑÁ¡ŒÒ)
but the starting point was the album of the music of His Majesty the King. Following that suddenly at the major Universities have the guitar as a major subject. If you look now I’m doing a tour through Thailand every year, about 10 concerts 10 workshops every year in the big cities. We have so many students that we have to select. Last tour there were 500 students all guitar major from different university. Amthai: How many people are there in one group? Hucky: Each university has different size of hall but there’s about 600 – 3,000 seats and it completely fully book every time. It’s great fun I really love to play and people are so enthusiastic and happy. The numbers of people who come are getting bigger and bigger. People who play the guitar in the university is amazing , only in Mahasarakarm are 185 major guitar students. More people pick it up, there also few very talented girls such as Tanmart Chueusawat (¸Ñ¹ÁÒÈ àª×Íé ÊÇÑÊ´Ô)ì she used to be a student and she’s very
brilliant but she doesn’t perform or take it as a career. She is married to a diplomat. I think she’s the best player in Thailand. Amthai: Do you have a family in Thailand ? Hucky: No, not really. I have a cat. Amthai: Are there any other big concerts by you coming up in the future? Hucky: After this I have to go back to Germany I just ordered some new guitars. I’m working with a guitar maker and a new model of the guitar. On the 25th I’m going back to Bangkok to release the new album. It is already recorded and will be released in the middle of next month. ©ºÑºË¹ŒÒàÃÒÁÒµ‹Í¡Ñ¹´ŒÇ¤͹àÊÔà µ Orchestra â´Â The Bangkok Pro Musica Orchestra áÅФ͹àÊÔà µàª×èÍÁÊÑÁ¾Ñ¹¸ ·Ò§ÇѲ¹¸ÃÃÁâ´Â Beatle Nuts 㹧ҹà·È¡ÒÅ´¹µÃÕ Beatles Festival Liverpool 2012 â»Ã´µÔ ´ µÒÁ ©ºÑºË¹ŒÒ ‘amthai’ Í‹Ò¹µ‹Í©ºÑºË¹ŒÒ
