What is a Gyrene? The origin of the name “Gyrene” has been the subject of much controversy over the years. First applied to Marines as a jocular reference by other branches of the service, the Marines quickly adopted it as an affectionate, self-descriptive phrase - one that made them stand out from other services. During World Wars I and II the phrase “GI” was applied to all service members as being “Government Issue.” Then and now, Gyrene was understood to be special kind of “government issue” - a “government issue Marine,” or “Gyrene.” While not a commonly used term today, it is remembered with great nostalgia by older Americans who identify the name with that special breed of young men who fought the desperate battles of Belleau Wood and the island campaigns of the Pacific. These men formed the battle history of the United States Marine Corps and fashioned an ethos that inspires the men and women who serve in today’s Marine Corps.

Coaching Staff

John Leonard begins his third season at the helm of the women’s volleyball program. Leonard guided the Lady Gyrenes to their second post-season appearance in the history of the program in 2012 by way of a 4-13 record overall and 4-9 record within the Sun Conference. Leonard first came to AMU in the fall of 2011 where his team completed an overall record of 12-19, and a 5-7 record within the Sun Conference. The Lady Gyrenes made their very first postseason appearance, paving their way to the Sun Conference tournament after a regular season 5th place finish.

3rd Season Head Coach

John Leonard

Coach Leonard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience having coached high school and club levels for over two decades. His coaching career began at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois where from 1990-1993 he was the head coach for the boys’ and girls’ varsity volleyball teams. In 1993, the Glenbrook North High School boys’ volleyball team won the Illinois State Championship under his direction. While at Glenbrook North, he also served as the junior varsity girls’ basketball coach.

After earning a Master of Science in Sport Management from Western Illinois University, Leonard returned to coaching in 1995 to serve as the assistant varsity coach for the boys’ and girls’ varsity volleyball teams at Lake Forest High School in Lake Forest, Illinois. Today, in addition to coaching the Ave Maria University volleyball team, Coach Leonard serves as head coach for the Volleyfrog Florida Club program based out of Fort Myers, Florida. He is the head coach of the U16 USAV Girls’ Club Team and the U15 AAU National Boys’ Club Team. Prior to earning his master’s degree, Leonard received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health at Northeastern Illinois University. At NIU, Leonard was captain of the men’s basketball team while also earning letters in tennis and cross country.

Ave Maria Mission Statement Ave Maria University Founded in fidelity to Christ and His Church in response to the call of Vatican II for greater lay witness in contemporary society, Ave Maria University exists to further teaching, research, and learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the abiding tradition of Catholic thought in both national and international settings. The University takes as its mission the sponsorship of a liberal arts education curriculum dedicated, as articulated in the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, to the advancement of human culture, the promotion of dialogue between faith and reason, the formation of men and women in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith, and to the development of professional and pre-professional programs in response to local and societal needs. As an institution committed to Catholic principles, the University recognizes the importance of creating and maintaining an environment in which faith informs the life of the community and takes expression in all its programs. Ave Maria University Athletics Department Mission Statement The Ave Maria University Athletics Department strives to enable students to live out Pope John Paul II’s vision of sports and the overall idea of physical, moral and social development through her athletic programs. The program provides students with a constructive learning experience that enables significant growth and enhances the development of values that will be critical for personal and professional success in the future. The ultimate objective of Ave Maria University Athletics is to integrate academic and athletic experiences successfully. In order to uphold this primary objective, the athletic program ensures that every student participating in any intercollegiate, intramural, or club sport, is a student first. Therefore, our athletic programs are developed and maintained in an environment where academic pursuits have priority and all students are expected to maintain the proper balance between athletics and academics. To this end, the Athletics Department seeks to: • • • • •

Be a community of scholar athletes, coaches and staff whose primary focus is to achieve academic excellence while also striving to produce teams and individuals who are committed to athletic competition and outstanding performance. Support of the broader Division of Student Affairs Mission Statement in terms of enhancing the development of the total person. Field disciplined and competitive student-athletes and teams committed to the highest level of sportsmanship. Create an atmosphere of respect, fairness and graciousness among all of our constituencies including our own student-athletes, coaches, opponents, faculty, staff, alumni, supporters, fans and neighbors. Focus on student athletes and the University’s academic mission, and provide them the support that they need to be successful.

Ave Maria University is committed to the philosophy that academic excellence and athletic excellence are mutually compatible.
