Ave Maria Mission Statement
Ave Maria University Founded in fidelity to Christ and His Church in response to the call of Vatican II for greater lay witness in contemporary society, Ave Maria University exists to further teaching, research, and learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the abiding tradition of Catholic thought in both national and international settings. The University takes as its mission the sponsorship of a liberal arts education curriculum dedicated, as articulated in the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, to the advancement of human culture, the promotion of dialogue between faith and reason, the formation of men and women in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith, and to the development of professional and pre-professional programs in response to local and societal needs. As an institution committed to Catholic principles, the University recognizes the importance of creating and maintaining an environment in which faith informs the life of the community and takes expression in all its programs. Ave Maria University Athletics Department Mission Statement The Ave Maria University Athletics Department strives to enable students to live out Pope John Paul II’s vision of sports and the overall idea of physical, moral and social development through her athletic programs. The program provides students with a constructive learning experience that enables significant growth and enhances the development of values that will be critical for personal and professional success in the future. The ultimate objective of Ave Maria University Athletics is to integrate academic and athletic experiences successfully. In order to uphold this primary objective, the athletic program ensures that every student participating in any intercollegiate, intramural, or club sport, is a student first. Therefore, our athletic programs are developed and maintained in an environment where academic pursuits have priority and all students are expected to maintain the proper balance between athletics and academics. To this end, the Athletics Department seeks to: • • • • •
Be a community of scholar athletes, coaches and staff whose primary focus is to achieve academic excellence while also striving to produce teams and individuals who are committed to athletic competition and outstanding performance. Support of the broader Division of Student Affairs Mission Statement in terms of enhancing the development of the total person. What is a Gyrene? The origin of the name “Gyrene” has been the subject of much controversy over the years. First applied to Marines as a jocular reference by other branches of the service, the Marines quickly adopted it as an affectionate, self-descriptive phrase - one that made them stand out from other services. During World Wars I and II the phrase “GI” was applied to all service members as being “Government Issue.” Then and now, Gyrene was understood to be special kind of “government issue” - a “government issue Marine,” or “Gyrene.” While not a commonly used term today, it is remembered with great nostalgia by older Americans who identify the name with that special breed of young men who fought the desperate battles of Belleau Wood and the island campaigns of the Pacific. These men formed the battle history of the United States Marine Corps and fashioned an ethos that inspires the men and women who serve in today’s Marine Corps.

Coaching Staff
Raymond Morgan enters his first season at the helm of the Gyrene men’s soccer team at Ave Maria University. Morgan comes to AMU from Barron Collier High School, where he spent 13 years with the girls’ soccer program and 12 years as the head coach. During his tenure at Barron Collier he led the Cougars to 10 district titles in just 12 seasons. Morgan was a Cougars assistant for one year under coaches Marla Ramsey and John Winfield before taking over the program in the fall of 2000. Morgan was named the Naples Daily News Coach of the year twice at BC and received the State Farm Sportsmanship Nomination three years consecutively.
1st Season Head Coach
Raymond Morgan
Morgan has seen success in the club soccer arena throughout his career and the helped the growth and rise of youth soccer across southwest Florida. Morgan coached two years with Florida Premier U17 girls and U15 boys as well as led his U16 boys team to a United States Club National title in 2010.
Morgan developed the Southwest Florida United Soccer Academy along with his brother Dwight in 2008. The academy is a camp for athletes from six-years-old to high school seniors that runs for several weeks throughout the summer. It allows young athletes the chance to experience a variety of coaching perspectives, learn about playing opportunities outside of school, and to become better overall players. Dwight will be assisting Ray at Ave Maria. A 1988 graduate of Barron Collier, Morgan played soccer for two and a half years at Wisconsin-Milwaukee before giving up the sport to focus on his architecture studies. Morgan received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 1994. He began coaching in Milwaukee before returning home to Naples several years after college. Morgan’s coaching licenses include the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) D Youth National License, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National and National Licensure.
