Stefano Giovannoni’s expressive designs skilfully play with the symbols and metaphors of the sub-conscious and their narrative qualities are fascinating. The brands Stefano Giovannoni works with include Alessi, Flos, Helit, Inda, Laufen, Magis, Nissan, Oras, Seiko, Siemens, 3M and many others. Not only does he design industrial products in the fields of kitchen, bathroom, furniture, the home, cars and electronics, he also designs interiors and architecture. His work is part of the permanent archive at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris and at the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Stefano Giovannoni was born in 1954 in La Spezia and studied architecture in Florence. Today he lives and works in Studio Giovannoni, a restored old factory area in Milan city centre. With ILBAGNOALESSI One he launched one of the most remarkable bathroom designs of recent years on the market. The bathroom was the result of a partnership between Alessi, LAUFEN Bathrooms and Oras. The floorstanding basin TAM TAM is a visual anchor and definitive element in the bathroom’s design and received the Design Plus award. Its fluid, round shape marries a feminine style with a masculine requirement for functionality. Alberto Alessi commented on ILBAGNOALESSI One saying: «With its extremely innovative design that I would call meta style, Stefano has done a superb job of creating objects with shapes familiar to all of us and made them exciting and appealing at the same time. I believe this is the direction design will take this century.»

Where One's soft lines tone down the architectural lines and edges, the bathroom becomes a place of privacy. Equal attention is paid to the technical aspects as well as the shape. So all WCs and bidets have specially developed wall mounting systems for quick and easy fitting. The freestanding bathtub is made of high-quality sanitary acrylic; its form perfectly complements the world of ILBAGNOALESSI One.

The quirky, slightly eccentric shape of the basins surprises and stimulates the imagination without neglecting functionality. ILBAGNOALESSI One proves that good design can be adaptable with a variety of washbasins. From small to countertop washbasins, the distinctive character of the series stands out. All washbasins have a ceramic hidden overflow. The washbasin ceramics are finished with Laufen Clean Coat and are therefore particularly easy to clean.

The WCs and bidets do not just look state-of-the-art, they are technically advanced. Because the floor is easy to clean, the wall-hanging WCs and bidets are particularly hygienic and have a specially developed wall-fitting system that enables quick and easy installation. The WC seat with lid keeps bacteria at bay. And thanks to the hydraulic automatic lowering system, the seat and lid close softly and quietly.

The designs of Dutch architect and designer Wiel Arets are both intellectual and pragmatic at the same time. His most important works include the Academy of Art and Architecture in Maastricht and the headquarters of the AZL pension fund in Heerlen. Wiel Arets was born in 1955 in Heerlen and graduated from Eindhoven University of Technology in 1983. In 1984 he founded the office of Wiel Arets Architect & Associates in Heerlen, which then relocated to Maastricht in 1996. He has taught all over the world at academies and universities, including London, Vienna and New York. He currently holds the Berlage Chair at the Technical University of Delft. ILBAGNOALESSI dOt – a partnership between Alessi, LAUFEN Bathrooms and Oras – is his first bathroom project. While creating this range, Arets focused particularly on ensuring that the individual objects do not distract from the actual purpose of the bathroom – cleansing of body and mind. Wiel Arets comments: «The whole ensemble is based on the strengths of its parts. Each of these has to fulfil its purpose without become a dominating force. All objects should serve the purpose of relaxation, right down to the last detail. The formal design is understated yet consistent in all the objects, so that it exudes a sense of calm. It takes a second glance to appreciate their very practical side.»

Formal and minimalist. The perfect description of the components that make up dOt. The circle is what they all have in common â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even if this is not always immediately obvious. The extremely subtle design with its closed shape radiates calm in its smart yet understated way. The distinctive slant defines the asymmetrical washbasins and bathtubs and repeats itself in the WCs, bidets and urinals. Rounded corners and the centre circular hole are the typical features of the ILBAGNOALESSI dOt furniture series. The vanity units, the cupboards and the trolley (special order) are available in white.

The frameless shower cubicles blend discretely into the bathroom. All the corners are rounded, the sliding door runs on sturdy plastic rollers and the extremely curved safety glass is set into the stable shower tray, which collects every drop of water. Harmonising usefulness: an extensive collection of accessories, including ceramic shelves in two sizes in white or black options, allow individual bathroom design.

ILBAGNOALESSI dOt is a meeting of extremes. With a matt black look, IlBAGNOALESSI dOt gives planners even greater freedom to create original bathroom concepts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in combination with other authentic materials like wood or natural stone for instance, or with high gloss surface finishes. In addition to the whole ILBAGNOALESSI dOt spectrum in white, the TamTam washbasin, wallhung WC, urinal and ceramic shelves are now available in matt black to create different combinations.

One of the most natural things in the world is the desire for a feeling of well-being. Hartmut Esslinger was one of the first designers to recognise the fact that industrial society needs more than just pure function. Following the maxim that form follows emotion, he lent his unmistakable signature to countless consumer goods. The pioneer of German industrial design, Hartmut Esslinger studied at the University of Design in Schw채bisch Gm체nd. He formed the Esslinger Design company in Altensteig in 1969, which spawned the frog design studio in 1982. Today the company is one of the best-known design agencies internationally, with its head office in Silicon Valley, California. In 1990 Hartmut Esslinger became co-founder of the Karlsruhe College of Design. Since 2006, he has been Professor for Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. frog design created the successful mylife series for LAUFEN Bathrooms and the matching bathroom furniture series ml-furniture. The design language of this series is one of clarity, timelessness and coherency that tones in with diverse materials, accessories and architectural styles.

ml-furniture is the bathroom furniture series to match mylife. It is available in White and Wenge decors. Fronts can be obtained in white. Elegant vanity units with functional interior details are perfect for the washbasin bowl and washbasins in 255/8" (650 mm) and 373/8" (950 mm) widths. All doors close with a soft-close mechanism and the door handles are integrated into the design of the front.

PALOMBA COLLECTION design Ludovica+Roberto Palomba

Ludovica+Roberto Palomba have made a name for themselves with their unconventional designs. This couple have shot to stardom in the Italian design scene through their bathroom, kitchen and living room interior design work for brands such as Moroso, Poltrona Frau, Cappelini and Boffi. Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba studied architecture at Rome University. They have worked together as partners since 1994 and are co-founders of Palomba Serafini Associati (ps+a). The company is based in its studio in Milan. The PALOMBA COLLECTION is the couple’s first bathroom project for LAUFEN Bathrooms. The design of the collection of sanitary ceramics, accessories and furniture is inspired by the natural boundaries between stone and water. Ludovica+Roberto Palomba describe this concept as a fingerprint of nature – which has now become the signature of both designers. Several items from the PALOMBA COLLECTION have been awarded design prizes, including the red dot award, the iF product design award and the Design Plus prize. The PALOMBA COLLECTION offers a wealth of infinite permutations because many of the objects can be combined with one another. LAUFEN has become passionate about constantly adding new design solutions to the PALOMBA COLLECTION. In the three thematic, organic, soft and pure design moods, architects, interior designers and collectors planning a bathroom will find a wide range of advanced, high-quality products. With innovative and pioneering creations, a new chapter in bathroom design has begun. Symmetrical tubs are available in a freestanding version with a 15/8" (40 mm) edge and in a built-in version with a 77/8" (200 mm) edge. Their shape and generous size calls to mind a small lake that you dive into to relax and recharge your batteries.

The bathroom is also a form of architecture. By re-arranging bathtubs, washbasins, WCs, bidets and furniture, this room can become a true part of your home. In the classic type, the WC lid repeats the dual contours; in the modern and design series, it is kept simple. The WC and bidet ceramic range is identical in all Lb3 types. The harmony in a room depends on the dimensions and proportions of the furniture. As a result, the washbasins in the form by LAUFEN series are available in different sizes. mimo by LAUFEN – the daring bathroom. Phoenix Design’s creation is a departure from corners and edges. From the ceramics to the furniture, mimo is a bathroom that reflects an urban spirit. mimo lets the small bathroom take on a starring role, with a fresh, colourful and fun appearance. mimo washbasins appeal to all the senses. With many colours and sizes to choose from, they brighten your mood. The ceramics all in white, trendy pink or elegant black can be combined to produce exciting results. Regardless of the bathroom’s size, the vast selection of washbasins makes ideal solutions possible. WC and bidet as a wallhung version and the appealing and unusually deep bathtub are an explosion of ideas that are bound to banish boredom. Ceramic shelving in two sizes and three colours create fresh highlights. It’s the same with the typical mimo shower curtains, for which a high-quality rail is available. Generous in size, but with no corners and edges: mimo mirrors in two sizes.

The mimo by LAUFEN bathroom concept was presented with the coveted red dot design award.

Perfection in a small space: the mimo bathtub does not take up much room 551/8" x 311/2" (1400 x 800 mm) but offers ample space nevertheless. The unusual depth of the tub 227/8" (580 mm) is exceptional. 106

This totally different graphic design originates from the Basle designer and architect J端rg Heuberger. He is a past master at creating interpretations of urban living that are understood internationally. He manages to produce a distinctive design that straddles urban living and ornamental graphics. White, pink and black: the basic mimo colours are part of the ceramics and the mimo decorations. They are impressive on the own or combined with a second colour. For example, in the washbasin with a different colour pedestal or siphon cover. The vanity units are all available in six attractive mimo colour combinations (some as special order).

Wallhung and with a first-rate, scratch-resistant finish made of recycled material, the round vanity units are available in white or black, the rectangular furniture in four colourways with mimo decoration, or in pure white or black. Doors that close with dampers is a just as clever detail as the concealed siphon outlet in the washbasins. The permutations mimo can offer range right to white bathtubs with panels either in white or black. mimo really can offer choice.

«Design of the human touch» is the credo of Process Product Design, the design hotbed based in Lucerne. The members of this interdisciplinary, international team surrounding Swiss designer Peter Wirz accompany the development processes of industrial products in their form and function and see themselves as generators of ideas – not only in matters of design, which is seen as an interdisciplinary process in a wider context. Peter Wirz studied mechanical engineering and was born in 1960 in Switzerland. Before turning to industrial design he was a successful top-class athlete, twice taking part in the Olympic Games and becoming world champion at middle-distance running in 1984. Since 1997 he has been supporting customers from Switzerland, Europe and overseas at Process Product Design. Process’s field of activity ranges from medical technology to consumer products, sport and lifestyle, engineering, computer user interfaces and interior design. Since 2001 Process has developed several product lines for Laufen Bathrooms, the most recent being «LAUFEN pro», which has been highly successful on an international scale. In line with its philosophy, this design hotbed was in close contact with the development team at Laufen Bathrooms during the development of «Laufen Pro» in order to ensure that production costs were optimised whilst achieving a high-quality look. Peter Wirz: «LAUFEN pro is a design product that has been purposefully created to be good value and which has been optimised for the ceramics manufacturing process.»

Based on the simple geometric shape of the rectangle, the LAUFEN pro washbasin series brings extreme functionality and clear aesthetics to the bathroom. With a pedestal or ceramic siphon cover, as a countertop washbasin on a chrome frame or matching furniture or as a basin built-in, the contemporary basins fulfil different demands in elegant style.

For any application or interior, you can find the right basin in the right size. Which is why architects, planners and fitters equally like the LAUFEN pro series: pro stands for professional. LAUFEN pro offers vanity units from the case/case plus furniture series (see page 150) and the open series (see page 160).

LAUFEN pro offers good design in many sizes. From the small washbasin to the 413/8" (1050 mm) wide washbasin there are over 10 LAUFEN pro washbasins in the range. 118

Built-in washbasins

This ceramic basin is dropped into the cutout in the washtop from above. In contrast to the washbasin bowls, the lower surface is not ground, since the washbasin does not stand on it. Individual bathrooms can be composed by combining the washtops and basins in many forms.

The ceramic basin is integrated into the washtop from below. The basin and the washtop made of natural stone or other materials form a single unit without cracks or crevices and are thus particularly easy to clean.

Previously, to change the siphon of a urinal, it was often necessary to completely dismantle it. With Lema, the siphon can be released with a special key and extracted from above. Compared to conventional urinals, Lema prices itself competitively based on the lower cleaning expense and an astonishing water saving.

LAUFEN presents the innovative Lema 0-liter urinal. The Lema 0-litersystem functions without water. It requires neither a water barrier nor electricity in order to hold the drain closed. The urine itself helps to lock in the gases and prevents them from streaming out. The holes in the sifter are therefore held small, so that as little air as possible can pass through. The principle of this «trap» is well known as an Erlenmeyer-container in the chemical industry.

The evaporation of the urine in the «trap» is extremely little. Even if the urinal was not used over a longer period, the odour emissions remain minimal. The little residual air that gets out, passes an aroma stone with a citrus scent. The 0-liter-urinal should be cleaned regularly with water, corresponding to the use. The water can flow off directly through the existing drain. The exchanging of the siphon functions just as simply as the 1-literurinal. Regardless of whether it is the Lema with the 0-liter or 1-liter siphon, in comparison with traditional 2-liter urinals, the potential for saving water is enormous. When flushed 300 times a day, five Lema 1-liter urinals will take just one year to save the amount of water used by a family of four in almost three years. A stainless steel lining separates the contents of the drawer from the siphon and keeps the inside tidy. The drawer slides out noiselessly on top-quality rollers and closes gently thanks to the soft-close mechanism. The Swiss architect and designer Jürg Heuberger is an all-rounder where design is concerned. He was born in Basel in 1945 and worked for many years as an architect and designer in Paris and in Switzerland. He has been Art Director at LAUFEN Bathrooms since 1995 and is responsible for many successful designs. open is one of his masterpieces. He has created furniture with an architecturally modern style which provides a stage for various washbasin series from LAUFEN Bathrooms, instead of pushing itself into the foreground. As Jürg Heuberger comments: «The most exciting challenge was to develop a design that fitted in with LAUFEN's different bathroom series – and not just anyhow but perfectly.»

Four cabinet and drawer elements in walnut, light maple dĂŠcors or in white fronts, invite you to give free rein to your ideas. Three drawer elements and a cabinet with doors that can be fitted under the washtop or to the vanity unit frame awaken the desire to mix and match. The drawers have extensive interiors, slide noiselessly on high-quality castors and have a soft-close mechanism. A stainless steel siphon cover neatly separates the contents of the drawers from the siphon.

Designing the bathroom as a living space: design, quality and function interact to unfold the personality of the traditional Swiss brand, a leading international manufacturer. The original cornerstone of the LAUFEN company is its ceramic manufacturing expertise. For more than 110 years the oldest natural materials known to mankind have been processed in Laufen, in the Swiss canton of Baselland. There, washbasins, bidets and toilets are produced in state-of-the-art facilities with Swiss precision. This ceramics expertise has spawned a talent for creating fully integrated bathrooms. Each room, interpreted by LAUFEN as a haven of relaxation within the home - is fashioned to a high design standard. What makes LAUFEN design so special ist the Swiss manufacturerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original approach, which views Swiss design as a symbiosis of two important schools of design: Italian design from the South and Modernist style Ă la Bauhaus from the North. Forged in outstanding Swiss quality. LAUFEN views quality as a two-sided coin: one side being production expertise, the other being function and outstanding benefits the finished bathroom communicates to the customer. The first side is an obligation, the other part of the free discipline practiced in the international bathroom market.

The foundation of the clay products factory in 1892 in Laufen was the first chapter in the history of a company that today ranks as a world leader for complete bathroom solutions. LAUFEN Bathrooms has a workforce of over 1800 in 28 countries. Three million sanitary ceramic items are produced in five production facilities annually and more than 800 sales partners send the products on their way to end users all over the globe. LAUFEN has been part of the Roca Group since 1999.

Just like its products, the architecture at the LAUFEN headquarters is superlative. At the top, the daringly curved central warehouse; at the bottom the futuristic LAUFEN Forum, inspired by a PALOMBA washbasin bowl. Nearly all bathroom sets are showcased in the internationally trendsetting showroom.

Sanitary ceramics Tradition, innovation

Ceramics are natural products. Clay, China clay, feldspar and quartz sand are the raw materials required to produce the extremely durable ceramics. The basic materials are the plastic mass and the glaze. These are refined from different raw materials according to a special formula. A pourable slip, chiefly made of china clay and clay, has to be made for the plastic mass. Homogenisation and cleaning of the mass takes almost 24 hours.

Using the most traditional moulding methods, the slip is poured into absorbent plaster moulds. They remove water from the slip, so that a solid layer is created on the mould within about an hour. Afterwards, the object can be removed from the mould and cleaned and reworked by hand. Large-scale production runs are created in battery-driven mould systems or in the innovative pressure die-casting methods developed by LAUFEN.

After drying and subsequently glazing, the blanks are fired in the tunnel kiln at a maximum temperature of 1240 degrees Celsius. The kiln is operated with eco-friendly natural gas that combusts without producing pollutants. The kiln run passes through the kiln on the fire-proof bogie over 20 to 22 hours.

At the final inspection stage, equipment is subjected to an additional technical test after the initial quality control process. All WCs and urinals are tested for leak tightness with a vacuum. Fitting sections are chekked and ground smooth where required. Now the equipment is approved, recorded electronically, packaged and transferred to the warehouse. 168

The ceramic hidden overflow, the alternative to the standard overflow in washbasins and bidets, only has a positive side. Thanks to the attractive overflow system, washbasins and bidets no longer have an overflow hole where dirt can accumulate over time. The ceramic remains in one piece and does not just look better – it is also easier to clean thanks to the smooth finish. The ceramic hidden overflow is the ideal alternative to one that is visible. But at the same time the hygienic and aesthetic innovation is based on a simple principle. Water reaches the washbasin and simultaneously floods a channel integrated into the ceramic that starts to overflow when the water reaches a certain level.

LCC (Laufen Clean Coat) provides incomparable features for the surface that have a positive impact on hygiene, durability and the effort required for cleaning. LCC is one of the most ground-breaking ceramic finishes that exist. It has virtually no pores and is extremely smooth. As almost nothing can be deposited, particles of dirt and bacteria can be simply rinsed off with water. The sophisticated ceramic finish also ensures that drops of any size immediately merge to become pearls of water and more easily drain away with the dirt and limescale that has dissolved in them. The ceramic stays fresher and is easier to clean. Due to the glaze-in-glaze method, where the LCC glaze is directly melted with the ceramic in one single firing, the LCC approx. 100 µm Glaze approx. 550 µm smooth finish of LCC remains hard and robust. All LAUFEN WCs are water saving too. They are 6-litre /3litre tested and compliant with WaterSense. With a maximum of 6 litres per flush, they achieve perfect results. In contrast to traditional 9-litre cisterns, a family of four saves over 25,000 litres of drinking water per year. LAUFEN’s flushing systems are all made by Geberit, one of the world’s leading companies in sanitary ceramics.

Nearly all LAUFEN cisterns have an insulation layer to prevent unwanted condensation forming on the outside.

Tailored flushing systems: LAUFEN products are available in many different versions, tailored for customers and for countries. The washdown toilet has the advantage that it prevents the formation of unpleasant odours.

The lowering mechanism ensures that the WC cover and WC seat close gently on the bowl. For easier cleaning, the seat and cover can be simply removed with a flick of the wrist. Antibacterial coating: LAUFEN WC seats are treated with an antibacterial and antimycotic substance which is not superficial, but penetrates the material thus durably preventing the spread of bacteria.

Acrylic panels: simple fittings make assembly and adjustment easier. The acrylic used is high quality, supports the design of the tub and is also easy to care for.

LAUFEN’s variable soil pipe has been specially developed for installing toilets to existing drains. This makes things considerably easier during renovations. The soil pipe can be installed horizontally or vertically and at any distance from the wall between 23/4" and 133/4" (7 and 35 cm) – and all this either fully or partly enclosed.

The installation bracket developed by LAUFEN allows the siphon cover to be removed quickly for thorough cleaning.
