Move it or lose it dude! This holds rather true in regards to the human body, especially when one is looking to keep surfing or improve some skill in the water. Some surf fitness can be the catalyst to improving your surfing, keeping you in the water with more energy, helping to reduce surf limiting aches, and just helping to keep your body in a state that it can surf. That’s what it is all about, keeping some movement in your life, not becoming sedentary. As well as utilizing some movements to keep your body capable of surfing and getting into some surf fitness so you can keep getting in the water! 1. The Guy Who Surfs 2 Or 3 Times A Month Surf fitness, surf workouts, whatever you want to call it is defined as movement with a stimulus to the body that replicates some of the essential movements that can keep you strong and efficient in the surf. If you are only surfing once every week or so, another session or two per week of some well-designed functional surf training can be exactly what is needed to keep up your fitness levels.

If you are only surfing twice per month, why lose out on some waves because your arms are too tired to paddle? Why lose out a set wave because your pop-up was too slow, you couldn’t get to your feet, and you kooked it!

Get Into Some Quality Surf Fitness Training Not only can you improve your health, physique, and all the other benefits that come along with exercise, but you can train to improve you skill in the surf. Bottom line, you don’t get to be in the surf as often as you like, so keep your body in a condition that can keep you surfing when the opportunity does come about. 5. Use Some Surf Fitness Training 45 minutes just a few days a week can keep you in the water game. 6. The Guy Whose Body Hurts In The Surf I hear you on that one. My body has had consistent injuries for a few years now. If I am in the surf for an extended period of time, it is either the low back, right shoulder, or left knee that starts screaming at me, pissing me off, and in the past would force me out of the surf. 4. High Quality Surf Training That’s what has gotten me to be able to surf for as long as I want to without a low back furiously screaming at me, or a right shoulder feeling like it will dislocate. Surf training doesn’t have to be high powered rotational kettlebell swings, or stability ball shoulder presses. Highly efficient surf program design is the use of exercises specific to your particular needs, to get you back into the surf. Perhaps you need some specific attention to that rotator cuff before getting back into surf paddle training. Maybe your foot and ankle is still too weak, which is pissing off your knee. Your surf training may be basic single leg stability work and glute activation, before getting back into explosive single leg training. Surf exercises are simply movements that are tailored to getting you back into the water. To be able to surf because it’s so damn fun and too fun to miss out on.

Your body and nervous system move the way a surf body needs to So how can surf fitness training be of benefit to you? Three primary areas: 1. Specific Skill Improvement This comes down to moving your body, and how efficiently you can move your body. What’s your surf coach have to say about what you could improve. Are you dragging a foot in your pop up? Is your right ankle collapsing during your heavier turns? This is specific skill improvement. The details of what can help you improve your surfing. Maybe during a squat you sway your hips to the right, Deactivating parts of your right side posterior chain presenting room for low back problems. Specific skill improvement is finding what specific attributes are somewhat lacking or providing a weak link in the chain and then improve it with some skilled surf training. 2. Injury Prevention If you are in the comps, you are not surfing if you are hurt. This type of surf fitness becomes focused on typical problem areas. Special attention to the shoulder girdle using movements to keep those muscles as strong as possible. Hip mobility and core stability work to keep the body moving well with big leg movements, and keeping your back healthy and pain free. Special surf specific exercises to keep your knees in top shape, as those damn knee joints can be a pain in the ass when problematic.


3. Improved Power Or Strength

If you have a stronger more powerful body, you will surf faster, with more control, more power, and more efficiency. This requires some detailed assessments to figure out where your strong points are, and where your weaknesses are. If you can improve your weaknesses, you will surf better.
