days of self portrait
labor of love
O
n a particularly chilly January 1st 2009, I decided to give the 365 days self-portrait project a go. It was a labor of love so to speak, especially after how creatively dry it leaves you at times. My chief motivation behind it was to document my year and to push myself out of my comfort zone. Needless to say, I was pushed in ways I didn’t think possible.
I was pushed in ways I didn’t think possible
I
t might sound sappy to some extent but I can remember a story about how each of the 365 images came into being. I have been hesitant to set up shots that might attract public attention but when taking these shots, it almost didn’t matter. It was the rush of creating the images that mattered at the moment, not my public image. Plus, the more work the image required, the more ‘worth’ it had for me. At the end of it, I think I came out more extroverted and more self-confident.
T
he first ‘roadblock’ of sorts came when my camera died on me. My trusty Canon Rebel XTi suddenly decided to stop working on February 21. Crappy way for the project to go eh? Thankfully, I had access to my office cameras so I kept on with the project.

I
t never hit me about the audience that was following my project until a few of my friends started doing similar projects. It was an odd place for me – being the so-called ‘inspiration’ but it gave the project a new direction. I felt the need to create at least ONE great picture each month. With the grind of classes getting to me, even getting a shot done used to become an accomplishment. Thinking about it now, I wonder how I managed to juggle work, classes, life and this daily routine of shooting my face everyday. The only answer is might be with extreme persistence.
I managed to juggle work, classes, life

ooking back at the shots, it truly makes me feel proud. It was exhausting and I know for a fact that not all of the shots are ‘great’ but it was the process that was rewarding. I cannot even imagine how less I would have grown as a photographer if I had not gone through with this project. As the saying ‘putting yourself in other’s shoes’ goes, I feel I can connect more with the people I am shooting now that I have been the victim of my own lens. I can understand if someone feels awkward, uncomfortable or even ugly in front of the camera and I make it a point that I make them comfortable… I mean if I can get decent picture out of MY face, other much better looking people would be a breeze right?
Yeah... It’s all about the memories.
I
n conclusion, these self portraits are some of the ones that mean a lot to me. Some for its technical reasons, some for the fact that they got completed. As I write this, I have the ‘May 2009’ album open and remembering a graduation party at my friend’s house. Yeah… It’s all about the memories.
