Ballina TÚS Programme contributes to success of Other Voices 2018 Ballina Karen Community Garden wins at Dublin Green Communities Photography Awards

Pictured in St. Michael’s Church, Ardnaree, the location for Other Voices are Leium Armstrong, Richard Devers, Anthony Sweeney and Chris Neville.

Elizabeth Fair, Tús Supervisor, said she was delighted to be able to assist in the preparations for Other Voices. "Programmes such as Tús contribute to the social and economic wellbeing of the Mayo North East Area. Involvement in such an event as Other Voices has many advantages for TÚS participants themselves. “The Tús Scheme has contributed to the recovery in the economy with many people returning to full time employment after a TÚS placement” Tús provides opportunities for people who are unemployed to break the cycle of joblessness and helps to

improve a person’s work readiness and support them in returning to the labour market. In addition, it is hoped that participation on Tús will boost a person’s motivation and confidence, offer them opportunities to experience different work environments and provide them with employment related experience to re-enter the labour market.

Ballina Karen Community Garden (an initiative of Mayo North East Partnership Company), scooped a first and a second prize in the Dublin Green Communities Photography Awards 2018. They won first prize in Gardening Activity and Nature in the Garden category while finishing second in the Landscapes and Cityscapes category. Celebrating the beauty and diverse character of Ireland’s Community Gardens this new Green Communities photo competition promotes the best images of community green space projects from across the whole country in one exhibition. The photography competition was opened to everyone, the only requirement being for photographs that feature volunteer community green spaces. By bringing together the best images of these gardens An Taisce Green Communities celebrates the success of community spirit in making Ireland a greener place for people, plants, and biodiversity. Nearly 40 different community gardens, allotments, orchards and community parks entered the competition.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018-2022 is funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development and co-funded by the European Social Fund under the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020

Community events guide

Killala remembers its WW1 Dead Mr Yeats returns to Killala in November for another in this series of community heritage events. The highly successful Mr Yeats’ Visit To Killala events celebrate the influence that Killala, its people and events had on William Butler Yeats; most notably as inspiration for his play ‘Cathleen Ni Houlihan’; set in 1798 Killala. On Saturday, 10th November – the eve of Armistice Day centenary commemorations – WB Yeats’ World War 1 poem ‘An Irish Airman Foresees His Death’ is the starting point for a programme of music; song and original arts commemorating the 22 young men of Killala who died while fighting the Great War. It takes place in Killala

Community Centre at 8pm on; Saturday; 10 November. The lives of the 22 soldiers will be at the heart of the commemorative programme with their stories researched and brought to life, both in the context of the community and homeplace they left behind and in the context of their experiences at war.

Move and Improve event an outstanding success ~ Words by ~ Victoria Tomlinson

~ Pictures by ~ Chris Sweeney Photography Despite greater wealth and easier access to sport and healthy pursuits, poor health and obesity are on the rise. Our positive mental health and well-being are always rooted in the care of our body. A healthy mind is closely related to a healthy body. It is much harder to thrive and be happy while at the same time neglecting your health and fitness. The three pillars of physical health are eating well, being physically fit and getting enough relaxation and sleep. With the aim of supporting all of us to enjoy the best possible health and wellbeing Mayo North East LEADER Partnership Company, in collaboration with Ballina Community Sports and Leisure Centre and local groups and clubs hosted a new initiative 'Move & Improve' in Ballina’s Community Sports and Leisure Centre on Thursday, 13th September. The event encouraged all adults – male and female of all ages – to look after their health, fitness and well-being by taking up a hobby to help alleviate isolation and loneliness; start a new activity to get fitter, learning how to relax and ease stress which will raise your spirit and to a better work/ life balance or make you feel more positive

and ready for education, employment or progressing into something new. The event showcased a range of stands from local groups, gyms, fitness and nutrition experts and businesses. There were numerous live demonstrations and give it a go trials. There were free health checks, CPR life saving skill demonstrations. In fact, everything one needs to begin their journey to a better life. Mayo Mental Health Association were tin attendance promoting positive mental health; as were the

local Taoist Tai Chi group who gave fantastic demonstrations in the art which helps to balance your energies into a calming and relaxing stress free life. I enjoyed the optional 'give it a go' sessions, especially the Zumba which I participated in and am now going to continue with this fun and energetic activity! There were taster sessions of yoga and meditation, traditional dance, art, craft, singing. There were free health checks on the day as well as some very impressive and informative guest speakers.

The attendees were also given demonstrations on martial arts, juicing, cookery, art and creative writing. There was also a challenge yourself to what is described as one of the best activities to raise our mood and fitness level with a skipping rope. There were fantastic spot prizes on the day and a number of limited goodie bags. Overall it was one of the best fun and informative events I have attended recently and as a result I am going to take up many of these new challenges and get on my way to better healthier fitter me! The event was organised by Mayo North East Leader Partnership Company under the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme 2018-2022 which is funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development and co-funded by the European Social Fund under the programme for Employability, inclusion and learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.
