The city of Newport is facing challenging times in the current economic climate. One visible face of this can be seen in the shopping streets of the city with a proliferation of empty shops and “To Let” signs. To counter the impact of economic decline in heavy industry and manufacturing Newport Unlimited, an urban regeneration company, was established. Representing public and private sectors, the Welsh Government funded organisations’ vision is to initiate major physical change and attract investment to the city. One of the key redevelopment projects is Friar’s Walk, a major retail development in the heart of the city. Alongside this proposed development is a small but significant site on the banks of the river Usk known as Blaenavon Wharf. It occupies a prominent position between the riverfront theatre and the University City campus. The site has been identified by Newport Unlimited as one for redevelopment. For this year’s major design projects students were asked to develop a proposal for the Blaenavon Wharf site. Acting as a developer/ client and designer there was an open brief with the only stipulation that the proposal contained a mixed-use element. Most of the proposals fall within a typical commercial mix of restaurant/ bar and private apartments or offices. A few considered leisure and recreational facilities whilst others proposed a heritage museum to house the medieval ship uncovered on the riverbank nearby, Regardless of the proposal and its viability the project acts as a vehicle for students to demonstrate their ability, as architectural technologists, to organise a design, present their ideas and develop them as a detail design. The work on display is only a snapshot of students’ projects. Underpinning each is a substantial amount of work including choice of structure, construction and material specification. There is also a requirement for students to produce a detail design that complies with statutory requirements and demonstrate an understanding of the environmental servicing requirements for their building.
