Established in 1871 and on a mission to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has always been much more than a membership body and now, thanks to an innovative application of products from the HARMAN Professional Solutions portfolio, its London home at Savoy Place is also much more than just a headquarters building. Yes, thanks to a £30 million refurbishment, this unique London venue on the River Thames now boasts the very latest AV, VC and IT systems; making it both a fitting home for this inspiring organisation and a showcase for the transformative nature of engineering and technology.
In rising to the challenge, the integrator harnessed the power of AMX NetLinx control technology to provide a robust and scalable platform that combines high performance with extensive network security features. Designed to control AV and building technology that uses multiple analogue and digital formats, integrated NetLinx NX controllers allow the IET’s electronic equipment to be centrally managed and easily controlled, as part of one all en-compassing system. A range of NX-1200 and NX-2200 units meet the control and automation needs of the smaller, more informal areas including the soft seating booths and brainstorming rooms, while in the larger meeting rooms, video conferencing suites and lecture theatres, NX-3200 units deliver the processing power and number of physical ports required to serve these technologically-driven spaces.
With Savoy Place being a popular venue for BBC live broadcasts and the Prime Minister’s press events, as well as the recipient of the award for ‘Best UK Venue Brand’ for three consecutive years, expectations for its refurbishment were understandably high. In addition to the integration of cutting-edge technology, the project would include a brand new roof terrace, permanent engineering exhibitions, an enlarged riverside suite, a new lecture theatre and a suite of boardrooms. “Engineering and technology have transformed all our lives and continues to advance our health and wellbeing. Boasting state of the art facilities, the refurbished Savoy Place will provide a global engineering hub for IET members and the wider engineering and technology community.” Nigel Fine, IET Chief Executive. A leading systems integrator was given the challenge of meeting the IET’s comprehensive set of system requirements and realising its ambition for an upgraded AV infrastructure; one that was capable of generating higher revenue flows, as well as better working environments for both internal and external clients. Modero X Series touch panels provide both the IET’s staff and its visiting users with an intuitive interface and the ability to easily control AV devices and in-room systems, regardless of their familiarity with the system. Wall mounted 4.3” and 7” panels provide simple inroom control while, in the impressive lecture theatres, 10” panoramic panels give the in-house technicians in the galleries all the touchpanel real estate they need to control these high-specification areas. Given the stature of the client and the brief, which specified best-in-class infrastructure, AMX was the go-to brand system and live twitter feed, and the ground floor video wall. A highly flexible and intuitive system was required for live event production. BSS Networked Audio products were deployed due to their configurable I/O, configurable signal processing and their high bandwidth, fault tolerant digital audio bus; a solution which the in-house technical teams have found particularly useful and relevant, given the complexities of hosting live events. While an integrated JBL speaker system in the conference, meeting and exhibition rooms, as well as the Riverside Suite banqueting area, provides the IET with optimum sound reproduction via discreet speaker units that are appropriately sized to blend with the historic setting. As well as surpassing client expectation, the system’s impressive audio capabilities more than meet the high audio standards required for a premium, central London venue.
