We are pleased to be celebrating the wonderful work of the students on the Textiles: Innovation & Design programme. This catalogue, with its accompanying web-pages represents the diversity of the textiles spectrum and marks the end of an exciting and challenging 3 or 4 years at Loughborough, whilst looking ahead to the future. Skills have developed through one of the specialised pathways – Weave, Print or Multi-Media Textiles, all of which are supported by excellent facilities, and high level technical expertise. Textiles practice is informed by individual identity and encompasses exciting contemporary design, artefacts for gallery contexts, research into innovative materials and processes and the integration of new technologies with traditional craft processes. We can see the results of the students’ commitment to learning new skills, and their ability to experiment with ideas, materials and techniques to produce a rich and diverse range of innovative work. The textiles programme at Loughborough University, is internationally renowned for the calibre of its students, who graduate with the skills required to succeed in a broad range of roles within the textiles and the wider design industries, from fashion, to interiors, trend forecasting, education, research, and to media and TV. We have recently been privileged to work on a number of live projects with high profile international companies, and the students have benefitted from the opportunity to take part in European trips, national and international placements, competitions and exhibitions. We have strong industry links and aid our students in gaining work experience and placement opportunities in the UK and internationally. Some students have taken advantage of the opportunity to spend a year out, either on Industrial Training, or International University placements, which lead to the qualification of a Diploma in Professional Studies or a Diploma in International Studies. At a time when future employment in the sector is a clear goal our students have been educated to be inventive, innovative, professional and hardworking giving them a head start on a diversity of career paths. This catalogue is a credit to their professionalism, and celebrates the end of an exciting and challenging time at Loughborough, whilst looking beyond to the future. This is the point at which our students embark upon new career paths, and as evidenced here these will extend across a variety of opportunities within the Textiles sector The staff would like to take the opportunity to wish our graduates all the very best for the future, and encourage everyone to keep in touch for many years to come!
Programme Director Textiles: Innovation & Design School of the Arts
Sophie Smith, Emma Simmonds, Ali Walker, Alison Mason (Chair), Katherine Taylor, Helen Paynter and Jodie Pearson.
The work presented in this catalogue by the Textile Graduates of 2015 celebrates the culmination of three, and for some, four years of work. It signifies the end of an era, but also the excitement and potential of a new journey. It has been an honor to represent such a diverse, innovative and talented year group. Many of us have received design awards, scholarships for travel, and have sold designs nationally and internationally. This prolific level of success would not have been possible without the support and guidance of our tutors, technicians and peers. Many of us have gained valuable work experience in the industry through a variety of placements ranging from small independent craft companies to internationally renowned designers and businesses. We have been incredibly fortunate to work with companies in the UK and also those around the world: in exciting locations such as Australia and New York. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the companies and independent designers that have taken us on, and express our gratitude for their continuing support throughout our final year. Studying at Loughborough has been exciting and engaging, offering us a wide range of extracurricular and recreational activities to supplement our studies and support our development as dynamic individuals. We have benefitted from a creative and collaborative environment that has enabled us to forge friendships that will last a lifetime. We are excited to share our final exhibition with you and hope that you will continue to follow and support us in our future endeavours.

The Printed Textiles pathway at Loughborough University has an excellent reputation and our students are renowned for their individual creative practice and innovative approach to printed textile design. Students have gained skills developing their ideas into design collections that explore hand crafted screen-printing processes and digital design on a variety of materials and surfaces. They have experience working on live projects with H&M and Abercrombie and Fitch. Many have enjoyed the opportunity of short placements in design studios, or have chosen to spend a year working in industry around the world; graduating with a Diploma in Professional Studies. Many have exhibited their collections at the trade fair ‘Indigo’ in Paris and many have sold their designs to prestigious International and UK Companies. This years graduates are highly motivated and passionate about their creative practice and I wish them every success in their chosen careers.

IZ ALLEN
This collection is an exploration of Space imagery, focusing on strong graphic forms and narrative pieces. Inspired by 1960s science fiction illustrations and photography, the aim of the project is to use such imagery and style to create a distinctly contemporary set of designs for autumn/winter men’s fashion. Contrast and boldness within the colour palette has enhanced the almost futuristic mood of these prints, a mood that is furthered by the accompanying photographic digital designs. I hope to have captured the excitement and strangeness of the Space, as the unknown. By looking at the natural elements of space such as the planetary system and astronomy alongside past, present and even future technology we may use to explore it. My work is a representation of beauty and possibility.

A key part of my research was looking at famous painters such as L.S.Lowry, I was inspired by his street scenes. I have experimented with my love for painting in an abstract way. My mark making is conveyed through a bright selection of colours to make the collection fresh and current.

The body of work has evolved from an inherent interest into the notion of the everyday, specifically, the habits and routines which consume us through our daily lives. This has been reflected through mixed media documentations, formed from a devised set of instructions to emphasise elements of everyday life which although appear monotonous, their mundanity causes them to be overlooked. The resulting archival material which is a translation of traces of human life into document form blurs the boundaries between the private and the public, through the revealing of snapshots of the artist’s everyday experiences.

My project is focused around the oriental gardens of Niwa. Using mark making and tone to convey shape and colour that is synonymous with the oriental style but ensuring it is fresh and unconventional with the mix of subject matter though pattern in print. The choice of fabric and scale will identify my theme. Individuality and unique handwriting enables a creative set of designs forming a spring/summer collection based upon high end girlswear fashion. Girlswear is a side of fashion that is unusual but is something that is very relevant for the chosen theme. It is a very mature theme that will be translated into a sophisticated high end girlswear design collection.

Urban Geometry is an interiors project inspired by the artists of the Futurist and Vorticist movements of the early 20th century. Both of these art groups embraced dynamism, geometric shapes and the idea of a modern culture, looking to the future. Urban Geometry takes a look at the ever developing view of a city, abstracting the scenes into geometric patterns. With a sophisticated monochrome colour palette injected with subtle metallic tones and bright pops of colour, combined with a variety of luxurious fabrics and wallpaper, Urban Geometry is a high end collection for domestic interiors.

‘Captured Nature’ entwines flora, fauna and entomology with geometric structures. The project intends to illustrate a sense of growth and movement, bringing together man-made and natural elements that burst and weave through geometric forms. The title, ‘Captured Nature’, has also been used in a literal sense, as the project explores the preservation of butterflies and moths, potted plants and birds, further highlighting the juxtaposition that forms the basis of the project. ‘Captured Nature’ is a high-end interior textile collection that is realised through the upholstering of vintage 1960s G Plan furniture. The Modernist style of the 60s furniture further underlines the geometric inspirations within the project, additionally putting the collection in a modern-retro context.

JASMINE FRANCUS
jasminefrancus@hotmail.co.uk
I would describe my style as illustrative with a hint of quirkiness. My use of colour is often bold and striking. I initially wanted to do my project on wildlife, gaining inspiration from documentaries such as Birds of Paradise by David Attenborough. This allowed me to gain a true sense of wildlife and exotic birds. My theme for my final major project demonstrates a mixture of wildlife and tribes. I decided to incorporate an element of wildlife and tribes to convey a naturalistic vibe. Designers such as Clover Canyon, Kenzo and Mara Hoffman inspired me in my Final Major Project. Their use of colours and designs encouraged me to push boundaries with colours and scale. It has been an exciting project to work on and I am looking forward to seeing my final outcomes.

ALICE GREAVES Based on the theme of Helsinki, my final project is a kidswear collection for Autumn/Winter 2015. Inspired by a trip to the Finnish city, my aim was to encapsulate a variety of elements that stood out to me during my visit. From the iconic furniture of Alvar Aalto, to the numerous dog walkers; this project brings together a fusion of themes in a fun and fresh collection of prints. It was important to me that this collection be as organic and eco as possible, so all of my screen-printing was done on organic fabrics with water-based pigments.

My project is an exploration of Shropshire landscapes, along with the natural growth of plants and foliage found within these sceneries. I have a great interest in photography and have taken time to collect various images, capturing aspects of the surroundings with a focus on the physical elements of landscapes. This is a strong component in the project and gave me a rich source of images to draw from, or include in my digital designs.
HANNAH REMIARZ My theme focuses on the beauty within a winter landscape. Creating abstract images with different mediums forming a contrast of delicate floras alongside the bold landscapes. Investigation of the translation of texture and mark in the landscapes was an important feature.
I wanted to create an elegant contemporary print collection, suitable for women’s wear Autumn/Winter. I chose to use a palette that includes the natural colours found within the landscapes but complementing them with accents of colour.

RUPINDER KAUR SAIMBI Delicacy, beauty and colour are among the central themes, which inspired me to further develop my understanding of English Garden flora. The exploration of pattern, a soft colour palette and the accompaniment of fantasy elements amongst flora, have been the foundation of this collection. I took inspiration for this collection from my travels to many quintessential English gardens such as Kew Gardens in London, from which I collected a broad series of images which formed part of my research and gave me deeper insight and knowledge of English garden flora.
It was my aim to convey the softness of the flora by using an assortment of fabrics, namely; Chiffon, Georgette and Silk. These fabrics aided in creating a gentle surface texture, which complimented the soft colours, and gentle imagery they were married too.

The Multi-Media pathway at Loughborough is highly regarded for its experimental and individual approach to Textiles. Throughout the course MMT students have developed a comprehensive understanding of design, materials, and process through hard work and determination, pushing boundaries and challenging traditional notions of textile design, to create innovative collections, underpinned by individual conceptual thinking. Over recent years many multi-media Textiles graduates have gone on to work for prominent design studios in fashion and interior design contexts, some have used business knowledge developed on the course to set up their own companies, and others have chosen to progress their studies in specialist post-graduate education. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the students this year, and to help them develop individual collections of exciting work, and I wish them all the very best for the future.

RHIANNON COFFEY My project is called Urban Geometrics; I will be focusing on completing a collection of sophisticated prints mixed with geometric elements.
The project will begin with many photographs around the city and of interesting geometric and striking shapes, capturing the repetitive shapes and structures we pass every day without a thought. My aim is to make these simple shapes interesting and innovating through print, laser cutting and embellishing. I want to create an exciting collection that demonstrates a high standard of designs. The use of colour will be simplistic and fresh to make my designs and imagery stand out. My aim is to design a collection that is suitable for interiors, so the use of materials is very important. I wish to use a combination of materials, light and heavy weight fabric as well as plastic so there is a good range of depth to my work. My final project showcases the beautiful designs I have created; panels of a large fabric that have movement, flexibility and structure.

My collection was inspired by the theme of Fairy Tales and Fables. I was particularly interested in how each story conveys messages of both purity and corruption. This led me to translate elements of light and dark within my work to create atmospheric merits, a quality found in paintings of the illustrated stories I was enthused by. Within my photography and drawings I aim to capture dramatic scenes through intricate linear detail intertwined with bold elements of colour in the aim to create distinctive qualities to my working style. Through initial development of colour experiments and sketches, I was able to create printed designs for the foundations of my pieces. This provided a guide for my embroidery, using stich and beading to enhance elements of the fabric forming radiant detail. Such detailed backdrops combined with embellishment enabled my collection to display rich layers of depth, intricacy and story; reflective of my initial inspirational theme.

Exploring the unseen and obscured sights of the world, my collection is inspired by aerial perceptions. A recent skydiving experience heavily influenced the motivation for this topic, revealing to me the beauty of the landscape from a rare viewpoint.
My collection considers the splendor of aerial photography, revealing both its structured and organic forms, along with its colours, patterns and finer details. Experimenting with a variety of surface treatments, manipulation techniques and mark making, enhanced with delicate embroidery and unusual embellishment, has enabled me to create a contemporary interior surface collection suited to current and upcoming trends. Furthermore, the combination of traditional textile fabrics and unconventional materials, such as patinated copper, has enabled me to create a unique and stimulating array of work.

‘Crystal Armour’- an exploration into the protection of fragile crystal formations. My work incorporates tactile and rigid geometric surfaces into one collection to demonstrate a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques. The integration of armour and crystals has inspired the use of digital embroidery, laser cutting and pleating to create responses, which provide a background for detailed embellishment. Heavy stitching and beading has been applied to men’s suit and winter fabrics to act as a modern form of armour and in contrast sheer fabrics have been shibori dyed and delicately embroidered to represent fragile crystals. My collection brings two juxtaposing themes together to create ‘crystal armour’.

Hidden Reality: Chic Favela During a research trip to Brazil in 2014, I saw the diversity in the lives of Brazilian people from the luxury enjoyed by the wealthy to the poverty of those in favelas. My design concept intends to highlight the disparity using different surfaces and materials to reflect contrasts with the rich and poor and show a transition between the two. I aim to show the beauty in everyday materials, focusing on their patterns and textures to reflect the Brazilian mentality that every item has potential. My drawings are based on scrap pieces of wood which have been distorted through reflection. Everyday materials such as found corrugated cardboard are used to highlight how materials can have a second life. I have combined simple materials and colours with reflective, shiny, surfaces to represent superfluous wealth. The outcomes have an interior focus and are one off, large-scale, surface texture panels and designs for soft furnishings including wallpaper and fabrics. My pieces are aimed at the luxury sector but the irony is that they will have originated from waste. The surfaces reflect a distorted view and each piece represents the hidden reality of the problems going unnoticed in Brazil.

A collection of fashion based samples aimed at a luxury Ready to Wear market, exploring the co-existence and relationship between the man-made and natural world. Beginning initially with first hand images, the concept has evolved through drawing and experimentation, translating into diverse material samples demonstrating both natural and manmade influences through traditional and digital techniques. Overall the collection has a constructed geometric feel, expressed through both 3D and 2D surfaces.

My project is inspired by birds. In particular crows, ravens and magpies have always fascinated and intrigued me. Each have their own unique beauty, strength, quirkiness, unpredictability and weaknesses. To me birds represent eternal life and freedom. I am particularly intrigued by the dark mythology, omens and superstitions attached to these species of birds, and consequently my work reflects darkness and light by my use of monochrome. Throughout my collection I have tried to capture the unpredictability, excitement and darkness of these birds within my prints and material experiments. I have made extensive use of neoprene as I like the fact that it has similar properties to birds’ feathers, as it is flexible, waterproof, insulating and intriguing to work with. I like to apply unusual textile surfaces onto my work to create a level of depth in order to produce more tactile imagery.

My project ‘Alive with Water’ explores the different states and areas in which water inhabits. It has allowed me to discover and combine the beauty of water, to syndicate the living, moving and frozen together, in order to capture the eccentric and intellectual shape and pattern within water. My colours come alive with the natural blues being contrasted with vibrant hints of colour captured under the water, accompanied by subtle metallic. The combination of printed textiles complemented with fabric manipulation and sophisticated beading leads to a unique set of bold and unusual fabric samples, created for a Spring/Summer sportswear collection.

The outcomes are artefacts which can be used in a fashion context and reflect garment shapes. They are embroidered using both traditional and haute couture techniques. The work produced is subtle and reflects the initial concept.

‘Sinister Anemone’ is a fashion-based collection, exploring the natural growth and decay that transpires within a stormy costal environment over time. Heavily influenced by the organic growths beneath the sea, my collection considers both the abstract and elegant floral forms, along with its colours, textures and intricate patterns. Experimenting with various fabric manipulation techniques such as embroidery, embellishment, laser cutting and layering of technical fabrics, has allowed me to generate a contemporary Autumn/Winter Menswear fashion collection, suited to present and forthcoming luxury styles.

‘Out of this world; the sublime’ investigates explosive and unpredictable reactions created in and outside the world, without barriers or limitations. By collaborating with the Astromony Unit in the Department of Physics, I was able to collect in-depth research of the Universe and Space. These initial primary images and drawings provided the backdrop of my work, and enabled the composition of a vast range of heavily embellished samples, with more simplistic designs. They are carefully considered embellished pieces, immersed with the cosmic blackness of space. To create these embellished samples, I was able to laser cut and make beads with shapes captured from my primary research. I combined both elaborate details and hints of colour, with more simplistic designs, in order to produce an impression of the immensity of space with the intricacies of rock formations. Both are natural phenomena and so provide an interesting structure for my designs. This project aimed to create organic, mystical, transcendent, bold and dramatic pieces, in order to portray the eccentricity and eeriness of space.

The collection shows intricate linear structures by exploring route and root imagery found in maps and veins in nature. Detailed drawings are translated onto a selection of materials that reflect the underlying concept. The collection aims to create a range of surfaces that interact with light. Different combinations of materials and innovative techniques have been used to produce interesting visual effects. Traditional and contemporary techniques such as embroidery, print and cutwork have been used to achieve unique designs. Natural materials have been combined with a neutral colour palette to produce a sophisticated, high-end interior collection.

KATHERINE TAYLOR I am interested in the idea of value being added to abject or overlooked materials through investment of time and skill, and the way that unassuming items can be elevated to hold greater meaning through use and human contact. Treasured items such as heirlooms and historical artefacts are preserved because of the connection they represent with another person or time. I am interested in themes of authenticity, harmony with nature and humility in craftsmanship. The Japanese word for this is Kenkyo, and it refers to the humble or anonymous work of a craftsman free from egotistical ambitions. It also suggests modesty and a ‘beauty without splendour’ which harnesses a subtle beauty found in nature and does not seek praise or glorification.

My work embodies these elements through the use of natural and biodegradable materials; up-cycled and remade fabrics fashioned using hand processes and traditional craft skills. The items are not designed to be static; they will change shape and texture subtly with time and use as they come to reflect the life and experiences of the person who uses them.

The Woven Textiles pathway is highly regarded and respected both nationally and internationally. The students have an innovative and individual approach in the use of materials and equipment. Many students have spent time on placement working in the textile industry and in design studios giving an extra Diploma in Professional Studies. The student experience has been greatly enhanced by exposure to external requirements. This year’s graduating students have entered major competitions as well as exhibiting their collections at the international design trade fair ‘Indigo’ in Paris, where many designs have been sold to prestigious clients. The weavers graduating this year are well equipped to face the challenge of the increasing demands made upon them by the industry.

A journey through the city of London at night inspired my collection of woven fabrics. The reflections of the bright lights on some of London’s most well-known landmarks led me to select a bold and lively colour palette, where shots of neon contrast with dark tones. Using a variety of yarns, such as metallic lurex, viscose and silk, and also the process of devorÊ, has enabled me to create fabrics with interesting texture and fresh aesthetic.

With visual research centered on the growing of salt crystals, this collection aims to explore the geometric aspects of crystals and how these surfaces react to natural light through the skill of weaving. Flat surfaces with sheen are contrasted with random areas of fringing and floats. The collection works on placement designs rather than repeats which plays upon the randomness of crystal growing. Drawing and mark making are an integral part to this collection with lightweight digital prints adding another aspect and dimension to the collection.
