My four chosen music videos follow the typical structures to all music video’s however to be different they need unique qualities and to focus on the band, the artist themselves and the purpose of the song itself: lyrically, purpose to the band and what it I believe the songs about. I have chosen these videos because it shows similar and differences in this genre of music. In my research I have looked at and I have followed the works of: Joan D Lynch; Steve Jones and Joe Gow

Metallica With One •

This song by heavy metal band Metallica , the song itself is on their third album “justice for all” . The video was directed by “Bill Pope” and “Michael Salomon” in January 20th 1989. By Joe Gow he would categorize this video as a song and dance number as it focuses on the bands ability of musical ability but also as an enhanced performance extended video which uses different imagery with the band and also the extra video is intended to extend the songs true meaning. The beginning of the music video it begins with sound effects including; gunshots, the bomb exploding then It fades in the guitar introduction. The lighting in this video is very limited but shows a moving light which is shown to look like a natural light which moves across the band members to make an anxious feeling the lighting also reflects the story as the video as its very dark and the only light is a slight natural light across the band which make the band seen out casted in some way. The song itself based on the 1971 film (Johnny Got His Gun and the video itself is simply preforming their song in an abandoned warehouse featuring typical rock/metal close-ups and low angle shots. The clothing is casual everyday wear the look is intended is to look not planned but in actual fact it is. The shots themselves show an intimidating view i.e.) of the surgeons/ doctor all

The camera shots use close ups and areal or sky shots to show the band preforming in a different eye. According to Andrew Goodwin characteristics for music videos with the second video added into the music video it gives the video a narrative point it gives it a purpose and full meaning , no real choreographed is produced however the bands performance with this genre of heavy metal the movements and facial expressions are portrayed through out the video, there is a ink between the visuals and the music according to Andrew Goodwin characteristics is a story about human rights and the thought of being cut off from the outside world, yet it's close enough to grasp if you only could reach as the man in the hospital was injured in war. No sexualisation of women is portrayed in this video ether but the nurse in the extended video is portrayed as the helper/carer. The shots of the instruments is highly inspirational for my music video as it shows the bands talent and music capability

Evanescence With My Immortal •

Evanescence is an American rock band which the song “my immortal” this song is on their third album which was released on December 8th 2003, the song itself was written by Ben Moody who also is in the video. Lyrically the songs meaning is about the spirit staying with you after its death and then haunting the person until they actually wish that the spirit were gone, because it won't leave. According to Joe Gow's theory on music video's this would be categorised as again enhanced performance as it shows a narrative point, a video of the bands movements and their feeling’s portrayed i.e.) body movements and their position, maybe some clips are memories from the bands past. The music video was filmed by These shoots can be seen as a “David Mould” and was filmed all perspective shoot or maybe a in black and white in a Gothic memory of each band member, part of “Barri Gòtic” of Barcelona for example Amy Lee seeing on October 10th 2003. These children playing she then gets shoots purpose is to show distracted by a bird flying the vulnerability and emotion of the bird in before I found out the true bands feelings but these also purpose of the music video my conveys the bands isolation and opinion this can be a way of lonesomeness, they could be the symbolism of her leaving her soul reason of what the song is childhood or a memory flying about. The camera shots are not into her mind, however the only beautifully taken but shows actual purpose of the video is the bands emotions through body about the spirit staying with you motion and posture, also with the after its death this is also shown clothing as the man “Ben as the feeling of loss is Moody’s” clothes is of a suit, his witnessed though this video . shirt is un-tucked which says that The shot of Amy Lee’s foot something has not gone well as touching the water symbolises well as his facial and body vulnerability and purity as water movements. . When conducting is seen as pure, also the colour my ideas for my music video I of her dress is white and white really love the idea of the symbolises purity or the colour negative or black and white affect that shows feelings/ presence, but most of all the camera shots however also The Mise-enof the band which shows their scene including the piano and emotions i.e.) the shot of Amy other instruments, the clothing Lee in tree which shows she is which as been described, but the isolated and lonely. The Camera background images such as the shots show feelings as well i.e.) mirror and the lack of modern

Black Stone Cherry With Lonely Train The band “Black stone cherry is a southern American rock band, the song “lonely train” the album “black stone cherry” was released on July 18th 2006. ”According to Andrew Goodwin’s theory on characteristics and identity in music videos there is clearly a link between the images/clips of the video and the song itself. With visuals such as the rail road crossing, quick clips and movements all foreshadow a train hence the name ‘lonely train’. With this particular genre there is no particular image as such just casual clothing however the video itself is very typical for it’s genre with the shots of the band playing and the beat and speed of the video with the song. The bands iconography is not that accruing however the bands style of performance is their. These shots purpose is about the location, the name ‘lonely train’ is the reason why the first clip is of a rail road crossing. The other clips show random images of people and houses which foreshadows wealth and wellbeing of the citizens and the buildings. The moving clips I will not be able to consider for my video i.e.) the shot outside the moving car even though it’s a great perspective of the movement of the driver I can not use this, the other clips of movement however I can use i.e.) the perspective of the running child which I may consider in my video. The video as a category is a sudodocumentry as it created on a home camera, it’s especially categorised as this right at the beginning with the rail road sign. The purpose of the music video is the band wanted to show through song‘ an anti-war statement as well as a song about people in poverty/

These close shots of the bands instruments is a great idea to show capability and of performance, especially on a solo or distinctive part of the song i.e.) guitar solo which means a close up of the guitar. I will really consider using this idea for my own music video as it shows of the bands talent and is used constantly in rock music videos. The clips of the bands facial expressions is another aspect of this and many other videos as it can tell the audience feelings and the literal meaning of the lyrics/song. The band themselves. This song and the video is different to normal songs by Black Stone Cherry as normally their songs are more of rock music and mostly happily up-beat however this video produces a gloomy feeling and also the feeling of an aggressive manner of the song it does conduct a slight gloomy and depressing feeling with the aggressive manner of the song.
