Rationale For this module I would like to have the confidence and knowledge to be able to self-initiate and self-direct live briefs as well as my own. I want to take projects that will be relevant and useful for my future practice. Honestly I don’t see my practice remaining in the same field I will want to keep exploring and developing. For my projects I would like to explore surface pattern, embroidery, publication, stationary, greetings cards and editorial) Themes / Subjects
Travel Nature Animals Food Music Observational Miniatures Textures Mixed media Process
Products / Methods of Distribution
Editorial (Article illustrations, spot illustrations, magazine, leaflet, poster, print) Exhibition (Album artwork) Publication (children’s picture book, illustrated biography) Stationary (greetings cards, a calendar, and notebooks, wrapping paper, stickers, badges and pocket mirrors) Accessories (Collars, necklaces (pendants), brooches, chokers, tote bags, purses)
Practical Skills / Media / Formats
I will continue to explore and develop sketchbook experimentation Improve analogue mixed media skills Improve understanding of surface pattern Embroidery Improve screen printing and learn about the process of fabric screen printing and gain a better understanding of this. Develop an understanding and learn about editorial illustration Improve understanding on book publication Develop typography designed for book covers and cards Learn how to transfer projects from one into the other
Brief 1: Animal travel map
Deadline
Until Easter
Rationale: To illustrate a weekly editorial in response to BBC Wildlife Magazine. The articles on the website are quite old and I’ve been quite bored just illustrating animals so to break this up I’ve decided to explore other themes such as travel maps of cities and food recipes. I plan to do 10 in total.
Brief 2: Penguin Design Student Award 2017
Deadline
17th March 2017
Rationale: This is a live brief and an opportunity for me to work on book cover skills. I have decided to only design a cover for To Kill a Mocking Bird. This has a mandatory inclusion for strong typography so I should be able to expand my lettering.
Brief 3: YCN – UK Greetings
Deadline
23rd March 2017
Rationale: A live brief to create a collection of greeting cards, notecards, notepads, gift bags and wrapping paper with a cohesive look and theme. I want to be able to bring the illustrations I’ve developed in the editorial brief and try out the process of foiling.
Brief 4: CD covers
Rationale:
Deadline
Illustration 12’’09/02/2017
I’d like to design covers. Potentially this could be for last year’s secret 7, secret illustration or Mercury prize. I will have to listen to the Mercury Prize selection first before making a final decision.
Brief 5: Paper activity box
Deadline
Rationale: I had this idea for COP which in retrospect was very ambitious however I think because FMP is a major thing this fits in perfectly. I’d like to have some educational purpose besides being a fun aspect. At the moment I’m interested in nature and the earth so would like to do a research project on this informing young children. A possible idea- I would like to read about interesting / important people who have contributed to nature and turn that into an informative and building activity.
