TEACHERS AS GLOBAL LEADERS

2019 THREAD REPORT:

GLOBAL COMPETENCY AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Learning about who we are, what we believe and how we want to make a positive impact in the world is a lifelong task. This year, the Global Scholars have been discussing what it means to engage in fair and thoughtful service in both domestic and international settings as well as holding Skype calls with Ecuador, hosting guest speakers from Greece, making photo projects, and writing Portal proposal letters. In addition to the Global Scholar program, AIM Academy offers an International Service Learning class that helps students study the culture and geography of the place they will travel to on their spring break service trip which helps students begin to peel back the layers of what service learning includes. Participating in authentic service learning requires an open mind and a willingness to examine expectations, intentions, and expose a wide range of motivations before engaging in the work. The Center for Global Leadership at AIM Academy hopes to provide a variety of experiences for students in all grades to learn about such terms as social justice, global citizenship, interdependence, and more. This newsletter is meant to summarize some of the incredible programs that have been taught through a global lens. The Center for Global Leadership is one of the 4 Threads to the Future programs at AIM.

DEVELOPING DEEP READERS LOWER SCHOOL

This year students in grades 1 - 5 discussed topics of race, class, justice, and gender. Beginning these topics early makes it a little easier to understand the complicated world in which students are growing up.

5th Grade Long Journey to Freedom Unit. This year, the Long Journey of Freedom Unit focused on Westward Expansion and Women’s Suffrage. Under the direction of Aviva Coyne-Green, students studied how perspectives were impacted by how different groups were helped and harmed by the events of the time. Understanding the challenges and experiences various groups lived through included the voices of the Oregon Pioneers, Chinese Immigrants, Mormons, Mexicanos and Native Americans. In

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP in the LOWER SCHOOL Cross-divisional partnerships proved to be effective learning opportunities for both the 5th grade and 11th grade students involved in understanding the mechanics of basic wind-mill electricity. After reading the book, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind about William Kamkwamba’s journey of building a windmill to help his community become more self sufficient and prosperous, the students built their own windmills.

Mr. Ervin explains principles of basic electricity to the 5th and 11th grade students before they built their windmills.

E-NABLE and LITER of LIGHT

This year, Kathy Brandon used her Writing Across Disciplines course to create a “Be The Change” unit which included writing, research, guest speakers, 3D printing, and building solar powered lights. Students made 3D printed hands which were made in connection with the global organization called E-Nable. The hands they are printing will go to those that need them in Lebanon. Izzy Jolinger, senior global scholar, taught Kathy Brandon’s class how to make handheld lights using Liter of Light circuit boards and found materials. It is our hope that these lights will go to Kenya with Jamie Stratton this summer.

DECONSTRUCTING RACISM

MIDDLE SCHOOL LESSON

Sometimes discussing racism can be abstract or uncomfortable, but Beau Martin demonstrated a way to help students think visually about the mechanics of racism. He gave them a multi-colored pen to deconstruct and present as a way to communicate the topic through visually. Here is one example of a students work. Stop by Beau’s room to see other students work. The lesson yielded astute and perceptive examples of student thinking.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INTERACTIVE HUMANITIES

Interactive Humanities at AIM is an impressive example of both interdisciplinary and globally based discussions. This year the Middle School history classes covered a wide range of topics that included the Enslavement of people in Haiti and Ghana, phobias, stereotypes, the significance of unconscious bias, equality, and much more. The class constructed stained glass representations that symbolize the connections and overlapping themes that people experience across religions.

MODEL UN

This year, nine students participated in the Jr. Model UN diplomat program. Students focused on international affairs and cultural diplomacy in Greece. Participants were broken up into groups to tackle the issues of ending forced labor and providing clean and affordable energy for all. The emphasis on building diplomatic skills, language and vocabulary, expanding knowledge of world geography, cultures, and political structures, as well as finding ways to increase understanding of how national and international institutions tackle key global issues are key components of this program.

UPPER SCHOOL SPANISH

This year, for the first time, AIM Academy offered Spanish classes to Upper School Students. Ms. Terwill Tomino taught half or year-long classes in Spanish as an Academic Elective. Ms. Terwill used the TPRS or Total Physical Response Stories teaching method which helped students practice their Spanish speaking skills and act out stories they had written themselves. The class also wrote Spanish letters to students in Ecuador through the E-pals pen pal program, did research on Spanish speaking countries around the world and more. We are excited to continue to develop this program in the coming years.

-Mei Rosenzweig

LEARNING ABROAD SENIOR SEMINAR

Traveling abroad naturally expands a person’s perspective of themselves as the world around them changes. The foods, sounds, smells and experiences constantly remind students that they are in a new land with new customs and norms. This year, the senior class traveled to Spain for eight days where they toured mosques, cathedrals, an olive oil farm, watched tapas being made and more. The senior seminar experience is rigorous and immersive. Students begin the year by learning about the science, history, art, and literature of their destination. This epic field trip will help them choose their interdisciplinary capstone topic which will leads to deep research, a 12-page paper, a 20-minute presentation and a hand-built 3-D artifact of their research. Learning this way is deliberate and mindfully crafted. AIM Academy believes that, with clear teaching goals and effective methodologies, each student can rise to the expectations placed upon them. GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM Developing Global Scholars at the high
school level is a tall order. This program is built on the idea of providing time and support to students who choose to engage in deeper research in global or internationally based topics. The word "global" refers not just to different places on the planet, but to the great variety of interconnected people, cultures, ideas, problems, and opportunities that constitute all human experience. It is our hope that a globally competent student will learn how to synthesize information and ideas from many sources and perspectives, and make well-informed decisions to act on what they have learned. As the Asia Society authors state in the publication Leadership Is a Global Competence, “It is this constellation of knowledge, disposition, and action that characterizes Global Leadership”. This year, two graduating seniors will achieve the Global Scholar designation on their transcripts. We congratulate Izzy Jolinger and Roxy Bobadilla.

INTERNATIONAL PORTAL VISIT

Understanding what it’s like to stand in the portal and have a conversation with someone in Africa, the Middle East or anywhere else is transformative. Although unusual, this form of communication allows both parties to ask, share, laugh, sing, dance and learn about the other person or groups culture and perspective through an old fashioned conversation. AIM Academy had the chance to host the portal for two days because the amazing Steve Chinosi, the Director of Strategic Innovation lets us borrow it with the help of CJ, the portal’s curator. It is our hope that next year AIM will host our own portal so that teachers and students can build short and long term units that help deepen learning across disciplines and geographic lines.

The Shared Studios Portal visit was Incredible! Thanks to Steve Chinosi, Director of Strategic Innovation at Andover Public Schools we had two full days of connections. CENTER FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION This year, AIM hosted a panel of distinguished guests pictured here. The panel included Rodney Glasgow, Founder of the National Diversity Practitioners Institute and The Glasgow Group, Penn Pritchard, Curriculum and Instructional Leader at AIM Academy, Courtney Portlock and John Steele from The Diversity Quotient. This 90-minute event was attended by students, faculty, and community members, and provided a forum for discussion, and questions on the topic of diversity

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The POCC conference is open to students in the Student Diversity Leadership Course and has been incredibly impactful for both students and faculty. It is our hope that more faculty will be able to attend this conference in the future.

This year, motivated students in both middle and the upper school started Affinity Groups. In the Upper School, Journey Jones and Nasir Pitts started the Black Student Union (BSU) and the MSU Mixed-Race Student Union met just before the end of the year. Middle School also established three Affinity Groups listed in the picture at the left. AIM is making strides to create a community that is diverse and made up of more deeply educated on topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion. CENTER FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP
