Ready, Set, Ride!
P
lanning rides this time of year is always challenging. Did you know early February is the coldest time of year in the Metroplex? It’s also the snowiest. I was pondering that thought as we rode to Weston on February 3rd. Why, it was darn near 70 degrees, sunny with a few clouds with a steady breeze. As we roll into March the weather improves and we start to plan longer rides. We didn’t get to have our Valentine’s Game Day at Raven’s Nest due to illnesses. And “Papa Duck” still owes us a ride out in the country so we’re looking to try and come up with an event to make up for those two events. Hopefully as you’re reading this, Dr. KT’s Voo Doo Chili team of Kerry Turner and Mike Savage has brought next year’s regional chili cook-off to Dallas H-D. We have some dates you might want to mark on the calendar. Don’t have a calendar? Well Denise Hefner has got the solution for you. Once again, we have D.H.O.G. calendars for sale for the low price of $5 each. Here are some of those dates you might want to make note of: March 17: 29th Annual St Patty’s Day Run. For those who have never participated in a poker run this is a fun-filled day of riding, food, and door prizes. If you have a question, just ask one of the officers. April 12 - 13: 11th Anniversary Party & Spring Demo Truck Event. Wanted to check out the 2013 H-D’s but found those 100 degree days last summer just a bit much? Come out and see if your perfect bike is waiting for you. May 16 – 18: Texas State H.O.G. Rally in San
Antonio. You can register online up until March 28 and you can always register on-site. We have several members planning to go and you can expect a good time hanging out together or exploring the city and countryside on your own. For more information, go to www.TXStateHOGRally.com. April 27 – July 7: Return of the annual Ice Cream Run. Denise is planning 12-13 stops and maybe a couple of bonus stops. As always, I look forward to seeing everyone get out there and join us on rides. The days are starting to get longer with sunrise on March 1st at 6:54 am and sunset at 6:25 pm, and by March 31st sunrise is 7:16 am and sunset at 7:47 pm. Daylight savings time starts March 11th. So it’s time to stop wasting daylight, and let’s ride! Ken Ballard Director

D.H.O.G. Makes $20 Worth Your While
W
ow, another month has gone by in D.H.O.G. There are different ways to look at a month of life gone. Some would say, they are closer to dying, which is too radical for me. Personally, I like having one less month, because it puts me that much closer to retirement. Yipee. Hey, what will twenty bucks get you these days? Well, if you take that twenty bucks and get a membership in D.H.O.G., here’s part of what you get: • Membership in the best H.O.G. Chapter in the country. Oh yea. • A not so stylish membership card in some yucky color • Invitations to some really terrific motorcycle events all year • Twelve issues of the best damn newsletter of any Chapter • A monthly calendar of opportunities to ride to awesome destinations where you can eat too much and get fat • A group of board members who work hard to make your experience with the Chapter awesome and fun • Some experienced Road Captains who will find the best places to ride and eat again and help you stay fat • A reward card so you can spend more money on
your bike and maybe your wife, girlfriend, or yourself • Over four hundred co-members to hang out with and eat more You get the picture. So join up, ride, have fun and get ready to start a diet. You will need to. You all know who the new Board Members are, so give them some extra support, because they are going to need it to put up with you guys. Seriously, help them by telling them what you want to do on rides and events. Your ideas will provide some new and interesting rides. Your new Head Road Captain, the honorable James Pate, has been working hard to get the March calendar together. He has done well, and takes pride in your rides. So, tell him how much you appreciate the work. The pay for Board Members sucks, so if you feel like being really nice to someone, pay for a Road Captains meal or a Board Member. They will appreciate it. Spring is here early and this is the best time of the year to ride out into East Texas and enjoy the scenery, peace, and quiet. Well, it was quiet until you showd up on that noisy motorcycle and scared all the cows. Until next month, Ride Safe, Mike “SMOKEY” Carter Your Assistant Director

Tami King Parts Associate Tami King started at Dallas HarleyDavidson in May 2012 after graduating from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Being an enthusiast of everything that is mechanical, it was only a matter of time that she fell into the world of motorcycles.
Check tire pressure, always. And she really knows her stuff. Within six months at the shop, Tami earned her position as top ten in parts sales of RideNow Powersports. Her advice to motorcyclists this month is to get their tunes in order for the riding season and check tire pressure, always. With her endorsement ready to go, Tami hopes to one day feel the wind in her hair as she rides her dream Fat Boy — with a Thunderheader exhaust system, of course — into the sunset.

MUSINGS FROM THE DUCK POND
by Ken “Papa Duck” Kennerly
Great Times Happen in Small Places
G
reetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. With the relative mild weather we are experiencing lately, I hope you are getting in some saddle time on your scooters either on your own or with friends on a
Chapter ride. I had the grand opportunity last month to be a part of a Sunday Chapter ride up to Weston, Texas, to dine at the Weston Café. We had 30 bikes and trikes with 36 folks fall in behind our very own Steve “Paw Paw” Scott as he led us on a really great route to the café. Paw Paw put together some new roads and some old roads that furnished us with really good twists and turns to get our senses active. I will say that our group was a good mix of seasoned riders and several new ones, and everyone held their own during the ride. I heard no complaints at all. If you have not had the chance to dine at the Weston Café, it really does not differ much from any small rural café you might find in small town Texas. Good, plentiful plates of food at a very reasonable price. I would recommend the pulled pork sandwich with homemade chips. It was also only $7.99 and had a great flavor. Now the other thing to consider upon arrival at one of these cafés is the fact that they usually do not have 36 customers walk through the front door at the same time on a regular basis. So, even though they knew we were coming and had closed the café for us, we still kind of overwhelmed them. They had one cook and a couple of waitresses serving us. Yes, it did take a while for everyone to get their orders, but we were patient and used the time to visit with each other. And, with the push to
get the food prepared and out to us, they did not cut on quality or fail to properly cook each meal. We sometimes lose sight of the fact that we can overwhelm an eating establishment very easily. Now I am not talking about these chain restaurants that are designed for large groups, but these smaller restaurants that work with a smaller staff and in most cases are making some of the meals from scratch. That is why we need to relax and enjoy our time together while the folks are working hard to serve us. There will always be someone who gets served first and someone who will be the last to receive their meal. It just works that way. So please be mindful of some of these smaller eating establishments and how they work to take care of us. Now, of course, if they are ignoring us or are sloppy in their service, then we just will not give them any repeat business. The month of March will see us going to quite a few of these smaller eateries, many being new to us. So, if you have any problems, share them with an Officer on the ride and let us know what the problem is. It will influence us as to whether we return there or not. And, if you’re free on Saturday, March 2nd, join Mike Savage and me as we ride over to Angelo’s BBQ in Fort Worth, Texas. This is a really good place for some BBQ. I’ve been eating there for over 35 years and look forward to taking you there. Come ride with us and have some fun. As always, I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together… Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey! Papa Duck

Practice Session Makes Perfect for Bike Games
H
ere it is, mid-February; It’s 77 degrees outside and the sun is shining — simply a beautiful afternoon. Yes, I have been out riding.
If you missed the “Party After” in January, don’t worry, we did talk about you. It was a really fun evening. Heck, I won two prizes. March looks to be a fun-filled month with lots of great rides. Don’t forget, Sunday, March 17, 2013 is St. Paddy’s Day and we will be having our D.H.O.G. 29th Annual St. Paddy’s Day Run. I have a great route for you to ride and there will be bike games. Oh yeah, food and prizes too. Keep an eye out for a couple of “Games Practice” sessions. I know a few of you were surprised at last year’s Lone Star Run; It’s not as easy as it looks. I am going to try to pick out a Saturday and Sunday in March so we can all practice our bike game skills. Hopefully there will be some more great weather in store. Ken Rideout will get his Monday night bike practice back into full swing after the time change. By the way, that happens Sunday, March 10. Keep an eye on your tire pressure and oil levels. If something is not right, drop by the shop. I know they
will be glad to take a look at the problem. There are only a few square inches of tire rubber on the road. Make sure they are good square inches. Keep your tank full of fuel. We just might get a ride in or two. Don’t just sit there and watch the leaves sprout out, come on out and ride with your fellow D.H.O.G.s! I hope to see you all soon. Thanks, Paw Paw Assistant Director activities@pawpawhog.com

LADIES OF HARLEY
by Paula Lowrie
Motorcyles: The Cure for Stress
I
have been asked many times why I ride motorcycles. The answer is very simple: because I have to. I need it. There is nothing that compares to the exhilaration of riding a Harley as you experience the freedom, the power, the fresh air, and the way all your troubles and worries melt away. My first experience at riding was when I was 16 and sneaked my brother’s 100cc Yamaha out and rode it in the country without his permission. But my real riding started in 1993. I was like a lot of women riders then; I bought a bike because it was something my husband was interested in and I wanted to participate. Riding behind him was not an option for a control freak that liked to do things herself. Little did I know how much I would love it.
We bought our Harleys in 2009; this was even a greater pleasure because we also joined Harley Chapter and I joined Ladies of Harley. We have made some of the best friends we have ever had in this wonderful group of people. All of our Ladies share the love of Harley-Davidsons in whatever capacity they feel the most comfortable with. What is really special is that no one really cares if you’re rider, a passenger, or just a supporter of your significant other in their passion for Harleys; you are still an important part of our Chapter. We have a group of people that enjoy each other and share many values and beliefs. Our chapter and the L.O.H. have somehow blended these people from being acquaintances to friends, and then to family. Paula “Elmo” Lowrie
