Hello educator, Thank you for your interest in the Dixon Gallery and Gardens! We really appreciate what you do for the students and this community, and we hope that you have a great 2012-2013 school year! Please know that the Dixon is here to inspire and engage your students but also to assist you with your projects and lessons. We trust that this booklet will help you plan your museum visits, outreach visits, special programs and more.

The first section of this publication features the programs we offer At the Museum, including tours and hands-on programs. The second part takes you to our outreach programs and explains what the Dixon can do In your Classroom.

For each section, you will find information about grade appropriate activities, themes, how to make a reservation and what to expect.

Keep in mind that we base our lessons on the Tennessee Curriculum Standards as well as Common Core Standards.

Dixon Gallery and Gardens Founded in 1976 by Hugo and Margaret Dixon, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens is a fine art museum and public garden distinguished by its diverse and innovative programs in the arts and horticulture.

The Dixon features a permanent collection of over 2,000 objects, including French and American Impressionist paintings and significant holdings of German and English porcelain. The museum organizes and presents eight to ten exhibitions every year, the diversity of which appeals to visitors of all ages. The Dixon’s 17 acre campus is a highly regarded public garden that includes formal spaces, woodland tracts, and cutting gardens.

The Dixon is accredited by the American Association Museums and is a member of the American Public Gardens Association and Botanical Gardens Conservation International.

At the Museum

When planning a trip to the Dixon with your students you will have many options.

The Dixon offers all tours for both galleries and/or gardens. Please keep in mind that the number of students will play a big part in what type of tour is best for your group.

Self Guided Tours Self guided tours encourage teachers to take charge of the visit and walk the students through the galleries themselves. When arriving to the museum, the group will have an orientation that gives a brief overview of the Dixon history and collections.

Teachers are welcome to come to the museum prior to the group visit, and explore the different exhibitions, selecting specific areas or works of art for the groups’ visit. By request, you can schedule a short meeting with a member of the education department to help you design your tour and provide you with materials.

Docent Lead tours Your students can enjoy a unique tour in the galleries or gardens, lead by a Dixon docent. These tours emphasize critical thinking and visual literacy skills, and encourage curiosity and communication. Dixon docents are trained in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a school curriculum and teaching method, to facilitate open-ended discussions with students.

Dixon Discoveries This one hour session includes an interactive tour of the galleries and/or gardens, followed by a hands-on activity.

Each session will be designed by our Children’s Program Coordinator to meet your student’s needs and match your units of study.

Who can come: K-5 When: Fridays (subject to availability) Maximum group size: 50 students Cost: $2 per student, adults free Requirements: ratio of 1:5 adult/student Funding available for this program!

To make a reservation For all tours please contact our Group Tour Coordinator, Lindsay Ocal, at lmocal@dixon.org or call (901) 312-1240. Please have the following information ready when you call: • Group name, mailing address, email and phone number • Grade level, number of students and number of adults per level • Preferred date/time and alternate date/time of tour What happens next?

After your tour has been scheduled, you will receive an email confirming your visit time and date, as well as, our garden and museum visit policies. Additional materials, such as teacher packets or visual aids, will also be sent at this time.

If you have scheduled a special tour or a Dixon Discoveries program, a Dixon instructor or docent will contact you in advance to confirm and design your visit.

It is important that you notify us in advance if you need to reschedule or cancel your visit.

In your Classroom Art to Grow

The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is a unique place that features both fine art and horticulture. Recognizing this dual focus presents an exciting opportunity for cross disciplinary education. The Dixon has developed an education program that offers hands-on creative experiences that relate to the gallery and gardens for elementary students in the Mid South. We call the program Art-To-Grow.

The colorful Art to Grow cargo van and its talented and creative instructors visit schools and other organizations bringing art and horticulture to your learning space. The curriculum offered provides students with stimulating and creative experiences that teach art concepts and skills that meet the curricular needs of elementary students in the following areas: art, math, science and social studies.

Each lesson includes a presentation on the topic and also a hands-on activity.

Cost: Art to Grow is a FREE program. It is completely free of charge and is our gift to the community as a nonprofit organization.

Who can use Art to Grow? Art to Grow is open to Memphis area schools–city, county, private and parochial. In addition, the program also travels to other Mid South communities within a 60 mile radius of the Dixon. Reservations are made on a first come first served basis with any teacher in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th. Teachers can only make one reservation for their class per school year.

Times: Art to Grow operates in area schools Monday through Friday from approximately 8:30am-3:00pm. In order to best utilize the program, the museum requires at least two sessions or teachers from one particular school to book a program on a given date.

To make a reservation Art to Grow begins taking reservations two weeks before the fall semester, typically the last two weeks of August. The quickest and most efficient way to make a reservation is by filling out the online reservation forms. It is also possible to email bpetch@dixon.org for grades 1 through 5, or you can call the Art to Grow line at 901-843-4273. For Kindergarten, please contact Amy Grossman at agrossman@dixon.org. Please do not send letters or call the museum information number.

You will need the following information to make your reservation: • Your name, school and location, your email and phone number • Grade level (must be Pre-K- 5th) and number of classes (at least 2) • Choice of study and preferred dates and times (choose at least 3 so your request can be accommodated) What happens next?

After you have sent your email, or left a message, you will be contacted by the instructor confirming the date and time of your visit. A booking has not been made unless you receive confirmation from the instructor. You will also be contacted (if applicable) closer to your visit via phone or email. If you have any questions regarding your visit feel free to contact the instructor at any time. Please be patient, due to the nature of the job the instructor may take a few days to get back to you.

Policies and Regulations • Due to the high demand, it is important that you contact the instructor with any cancellations, if possible, two weeks prior to your visit.

• The instructor has the right to turn down reservations upon request for any reason.

• The classroom instructor is not to leave the classroom during their Art to Grow visit.

• Please help the instructor by participating in the lesson; refrain from using cell phones or text messaging Failure to comply with the above may jeopardize your chances of booking future Art to Grow visits.

Art to Grow Lessons: Grades 1-5

Lesson topics change every three months, along with the Dixon’s exhibition schedules in the galleries and gardens. Choose your sessions from the following:

JANUARY-MARCH

OCTOBER -DECEMBER

Present Tense: Art from Memphis (February 3 –April 14) Objective: Present Tense: Art from Memphis will be a celebration of work from local artists over the past 10 years.

Students will learn about local artists and compare and contrast different styles of work featured in the exhibition.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir; The Wave, 1882 Objective: To learn about the life of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1841-1919; the French artist was one of the founding painters of the impressionist movement. To investigate Renoir’s techniques and how they influenced other artist’s work. To discuss the color and textures of the painting The Wave.

Grades 1-2 Activity: Students will produce a ‘The Wave’ inspired felt.

Students will mix different colors of roving to produce a one-of-a-kind piece.

Grades 3-5 Activity: Students will produce a mixed media multi-texture wave collage.

Target Skills for Art: Textural qualities, tactile texture, visual texture, contrast/ variety, color. Target Skills for Social Studies: Finding a location on a map, recognizing components of culture, how art reflects culture

*Grade 5 students will carve into rubber blocks using professional cutters to create their print (maximum of 15 students per class session due to nature of tools)

The Dixon Arboretum

Target Skills for Art: Primary and Secondary colors, warm colors, tints/shade Target Skills for Social Studies: Components of culture, how arts reflect cultures

Objective: Dixon Gallery & Gardens is a certified Level IV (four) arboretum

Daffodils

with more than 120 identified species of trees. Students will study various trees from the Dixon gardens and look at the effect of the changing seasons, habitats, and the impact trees have on the environment.

Grades 1-3 Activity: To create a mixed media tree sculpture.

Target Skills for Art: Textures within the environment, Form, 3-D design.

Target Skills for Science: Physical properties, balance, weather, seasons Grades 4-5 Activity: Students will focus on the Gingko tree and its Chinese origins. To learn how to use brush and ink to create a masterpiece Target Skills for Art: Line, shape, space. Target Skills for Science: Weather, climate

Grades 1-5* Activity: Students will carve a matrix from Styrofoam to make a print inspired by the work of a local artist.

Objective: To identify a few different types of daffodils that can be found blooming in their thousands in the Dixon gardens. To use scientific vocabulary to name parts of the Daffodil.

Grades 1-3: Students will use textured and patterned paper to create a folding fan of decorative daffodils.

Grades 4-5: Students will fold, clamp and dye paper to create beautiful daffodil designs.

Target Skills for Art: Primary and Secondary colors, warm colors, tints/shades.

Target Skills for Science: Parts and functions of plants, lifecycles of plants, needs of plants

Art to Grow Lessons Grades 1-5

Art to Grow Lessons: Kindergarten APRIL-MAY Bijoux Parisiens: French Jewelry from the Petit Palais, Paris (April 28-July 21 2013) Objective: To learn about the original design, materials and the significance of different jewelry from the exhibition which will showcase jewelry, design drawings, lithographs and etchings dating back to the 18th century to the early 20th century and include famous names such as Cartier.

Each lesson relates to The Dixon Gallery and Gardens and begins with story time from a children’s book, followed by a hands-on, educational art activity.

OCTOBER-MAY Nature: Garden Creations Art exists in the Dixon museum and also in its stunning gardens as well!

Objective: In this hands-on activity, students will turn into cubists, surrealists, and abstract artists. We will bring the outdoors indoors by exploring edible art!

Appropriate tools and techniques will be applied to inspire little sprouts in this engaging activity.

Grades 1-3 Activity: Students will make decorative clay medallions

Target Skills for Art: Line Recognition, Textures in the environment, Pattern,

Grades 4-5 Activity: Inspired by French design, students will create metal tooled shields.

Seasonal Art: Art Seasoning

Target Skills for Art: Placement/spatial relationships, symmetry, carving techniques. Target Skills for Social Studies: History and culture

Color, Placement

Whether it is fall, winter, spring, or summer, this seasonal lesson will inspire artists with this lively activity.

Objective: Students will work with mixed media to create a piece of artwork that will coincide with the current season of the year.

Landscape

Target Skills for Art: Line Recognition,

Objective: To see how different artists in the Dixon’s permanent collection capture the beauty of nature in landscapes including, Paul Cezanne’s Trees and Rocks, Near the Chateau Noir. Students will discuss the scenes, style and media used to form the images.

Pattern, Color, Placement

Grades 1-5 Activity: Inspired by beautiful landscape paintings from the Dixon’s permanent collection, students will draw a chosen landscape using a variety of media.

Objective: Students will explore
