Posed with the task of producing a provocative intervention along the stretch of SE Division, often referred to as Restaurant Row, my interest quickly narrowed in on the lack of public space in the area. Navigation of space along the stretch of 26th Avenue to Cezar Chavez on SE Division Street is improportionally driven by money. In mapping the circulation of money I am mapping circulation as a whole, as movement (or rather existence) in this space nearly requires that one spends or recieves money. My objective became to provide space to exist that is not monetarily driven. A new agora. A place for exchange of thoughts, culture, memories.

From OMA’s Elegy for the Vacant Lot “The permanence of even the most frivolous item of architecture and the instability of the metropolis are incompatible. In this conflict the metropolis is, by definition, the victor; in its pervasive architecture is reduced to the status of plaything, tolerated as décor for the illusions of history and memory. In Manhattan this paradox is resolved in a brilliant way: through the development of a mutant architecture that combines the aura of monumentality with the performance of instability. Its interiors accommodate compositions of program and activity that change constantly and independently of each other without affecting what is called, with accidental profundity, the envelope.” The agora mobilia can be understood to have the same ideals, but with even less regard to an ‘envelope’,in most cases eliminating it all togehter. The percievable entry point might instead take place through a shift in ground plane or other consistencies that together begin to build an architectural vocabulary.

This evolution of the Agora Mobilia is a social housing (SoHo) project. SoHo aims to provide an alternative to housing in a city that, amidst a housing crisis 16,000 apartments sit empty. The alternative solution should be afordable and meet the needs of an underserved working class. The agora is a place for exchange. The project is social in that it exists amidst the agora and within the city. In a district that houses less than 4,000 long term residents but is made up of a dozen hotels and sees thousands of commuters via commerce, work and transit each day, it is important to take into account the mobile and temporal aspect of the community that is formed from this.
