CASE THE COLLECTION HAS EVOLVED IN NEARLY EVERY WAY, CONSTITUTING A MORE IMAGINATIVE USE OF FABRICS, STYLING AND COLORS, WHILE THE BASIC TENETS – DISTRESSING, OVERSIZED SILHOUETTES AND MUTED TONES – OF YEEZY SEASON REMAIN INTACT. PERHAPS MOST STRIKING IS KANYE’S USE OF COLOR-BLOCKING AND SELECT PATTERNS, WHICH CAN LARGELY BE FOUND THROUGH THE WOMEN’S COMPONENT OF THE DROP.

MY MOODBOARDS PREVIOUS TO THIS SLIDE REPRESENT THE THEMES I HAVE TAKEN FROM STEPHEN JONE’S WORK ON FIRST IMPRESSION. I WAS ABLE TO EXPLORE MULTIPLE THEMES THAT HIS WORK REPRESENTED, I BRANCHED OFF AND LOOKED INTO VISUAL COMPARISONS, AS WELL AS HOW JONES’S WORK MADE ME FEEL. THERE WAS A LOT OF COLOUR THEMES I WAS ABLE TO TAKE AND CREATE A MOOD FOR. HERE I LOOKED AT ARTISTS WHO I THOUGHT WOULD FOLLOW THE THEME OF DISTORTION. I REALISED THAT STEPHEN JONES’S WORK IS VERY ASYMETRICAL AND I BRANCHED OFF TO THE IDEA OF DISORDER AND DISTORTION. I THEN CAME ACROSS FRANCIS BACON WHO IS ALL ABOUT BODY DISTORTION AND STRIPPING EMOTIONS. THIS LED ME TO MAKE A MOODBOARD ON ARTISTIC BODY DISTORTION NUDE COLOURS AND RE SHAPING THE BODY. HOWEVER I WANTED TO FIND A LESS KNOWN THEME AND REALLY DEVELOP IT. I THEN LOOKED AT SALVADOR DALI WHO IS ALL ABOUT ILLUSTION AND NOTHING BEING THE CORRECT TO THE EYE. I THOUGHT WHAT IS OUT THERE THAT IS NEVER THE SAME NO MATTER WHAT AND THAT IS WHEN I CAME ACROSS THE OCEAN AND WAVES. THIS INFLUENCED ME TO LOOK INTO TEXTURE AND CREATING SOMETHING THAT REPRESENTS THE WAVES BUT YET RE SHAPES THE BODY. AT THIS POINT I HAVE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THEMES THAT I HAVE TO MERGE TOGETHER WHICH IS A CHALLENGE AND A RISK THAT I WANT TO TAKE.

EVALUATION

I LIKE THE IDEA OF A COLLAGE ON THE BODY, LEANING MORE TO COLLAGING COLOURS RATHER THAN MATERIALS. MY INSPIRATION STEMS FROM WHO I AM. I LIKE TO WEAR SPORTSWEAR AS IF IT WAS THE LATEST OUTFIT TREND. I WANT TO REFLECT THAT IN MY WORK. THAT IS MAINLY WHY I AM MAKING A SWIMSUIT TO WEAR FOR LEISURE RATHER THAN A BODYSUIT. HOWEVER I DO HAVE PRACTICALITY IN MIND IN THE SENSE OF CHOOSING SUPPORTING MATERIALS AND CREATING SHAPES ON THE SWIMSUIT TO SUPPORT THE BODY YET LOOK COOL. THE CHALLENGE IS KEEPING STEPHEN JONES IN MIND AND NOT COMPLETE DITCHING HIS DESIGN ETHOS IN THIS PROJECT. THE FABRICS I CHOSE ARE MESH AND STRETCH FABRICS SUCH AS RIBBING, SPANDEX AND JERSEY. I DID MULTIPLE TESTING PROCEDURES SUCH AS LOCK STITCHING DIFFERENT FABRICS TOGETHER, TO GET A RESULT OF HOW THEY STRETCH AND GATHER AT THE SEAM.

I WORK BEST WHEN I HAVE INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW, I AM VERY CALCULATED IN THAT SENSE AND IT IS EVIDENT IN THE MAKING OF THIS SWIMSUIT. I WAS ABLE TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THE PROCESSES BEHIND CONTOURING THE BODY. I BELIEVE I DID VERY WELL IN THE MAKING OF THIS SWIMSUIT IN TERMS OF CLEAN SEAMS AND ACCURATE SEAM ALLOWANCES. IN THE PATTERN MAKING PROCESS I CAME ACROSS THE NEED TO EXPAND MY PATTERN SO WHEN I USE MAXIMUM STRETCH WITH THE CONTRASTING FABRIC IT WOULD CURVE BACK INTO IT IT’S ORGINAL SHAPE.

HERE I REACHED THE FINAL SHAPE OF MY FRONT PATTERN PIECE. I DID TEST IT OUT WITH SCRAP FABRIC AND IT WORKED JUST AS PLANNED.

HERE IS IMAGES OF MY MAKING TRIAL AND ERRORS. IN THE LEFT PICTURE I WASN’T ABLE TO ACHIEVE THE GATHERS I WANTED BECAUSE THE MESH I USED WAS TOO STIFF. HOWEVER I REALISED THE TOP STITCH LOOKED GOOD. THE MIDDLE IMAGE IS MY ATTEMPT TO STRETCH THE MESH HOWEVER IT JUST MADE THE MESH CURVE INWARDS AND BECAUSE THE MATERIAL IS STIFF, THE IRON COULDN’T FLATTERN OUT THE SHAPE IT CREATED. THE IMAGE TO THE RIGHT I HAD PUT PANELS INTO MY PATTERN WHICH WHEN MADE DIDN’T LOOK VERY GOOD SO SOON AFTER THIS I CHANGED THE POSITION OF THE PANELS. amy

TO THE RIGHT OF THE PAGE I HAD TO DEVELOP THE CAD IN A WAY TO SHOW WHAT WORKED IN THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS. THIS WASN’T MY ORIGINAL DESIGN BUT THROUGH A FEW ATTEMPTS I WAS HAPPY WITH THIS SHAPE OUTCOME.

THIS IS THE FRONT OF THE SWIMUIT WITH ALL THE GATHERS I WANTED HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE GATHERS THE SWIMSUIT BECAME VERY SMALL SO I COULDN’T FIT IT ON A MANNEQUIN. I FEEL LIKE IT WOULD LOOK BETTER ON HOWEVER IN PERSON IT LOOKS VERY WRINKLED NO MATTER HOW IT IS SHOWN.

THIS IS THE BACK AND I AM VERY PROUD OF THE SHAPE ACHIEVEMENT. ONCE BINDED THE BACK SCOOP NECKLINE WILL LOOK VERY CLEAN. I AM GLAD I HADN’T PUT ELASTIC IN THE LEG JUST YET BECAUSE I REALISED THAT MY PATTERN PIECES NEED TO BE SCALED UP SO THE GATHERS AND THE ELASTIC DO NOT SHRINK IT TOO MUCH

FOR MY COLLECTION THE EYES SHOULD ALL BE ON THE SWIMWEAR HOWEVER THERE IS OVERSIZED CROPPED JUMPERS TO CO SIDE THE SWIM SUITS. THE COLOURS ARE PRETTY MUCH COHESIVE AND ENGAGING TO THE EYE AS IT HAS A PRIMARY COLOURS FEEL TO IT. THE MATERIALS IS WHAT CREATES INTEREST.

EVALUATION IN TERMS OF THE BRANDING SIDE OF THIS PROJECT I FOUND I DID STRUGGLE AS, NOT ONLY WAS I LEARNING ABOUT WHAT IS INCLUDED UN BRANDING BUT I WAS ALSO TRYING TO SHOW MY UNDERSTANDING ON PAPER AS WELL AS I COULD. THE CASE STUDY WAS THE BIGGEST HELP IN TERMS OF PROGRESSION BECAUSE IT WAS ME UNDERSTANDING SOMEONE ELSE’S BRANDING PATH IN ORDER FOR ME TO THINK STRAIGHT AND CREATE MY OWN. CULTY WAS BRINGING MY COMPLETE OPPOSITE IDEAS TOGETHER, AND MAKE SENSE OF IT. BY DOING THIS I WAS ABLE TO CREATE MY OWN DESIGN ETHOS. WRITING ABOUT MY INTRODUCTION AND PROPOSAL WAS EASY BECAUSE I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO ACHIEVE. IT WAS THEN RESEARCHING WHO WOULD BE A POTENTIAL COMPETITIORS AND MAKE SENSE OF WHO IS ON THE SAME LEVEL AS MY BRAND. FOR ME IT WAS A RISK TO SELECT A CONSUMER GROUP I DO NOT RELATE TO AT ALL AND CREATE SOMETHING THAT THEY COULD POTENTIALLY WEAR.

NEXT TIME I WOULD CHOSE STREETWEAR AS IT IS CLOSER TO HOME IN THE SENSE OF MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONSUMER GROUPS ARE STRONGER. THE DESIGN PROCESS LITERALLY WAS A BUILD UP TO THE FINAL DETAILS E.G. SHAPE, COLOUR AND FORM. I WENT FROM BODY CONTOUR TO GATHERS TO PANELLING. NEXT TIME I WISH TO AVOID THE BASIC PANELLING AND REALLY CHALLENGE MY PATTERN SKILLS. EVERY CAD I MADE WAS CLOSER TO MY COMFORT ZONE AND I AM VERY PROUD OF MY RANGE PLAN.
