This year’s Memphis Ambassador Family is the Brooke and Art Chaput. They had a healthy pregnancy and anxiously awaited the birth of their first born. Everything in the pregnancy was by the book until her second trimester. She noticed swelling in one leg and immediately went to the ER. They found her pressure to be high and was put on bedrest as they monitored her for pre-eclampsia/toxemia. Their daughter, Ruth, was born by emergency c-section 12 weeks early and spent 77 days in the NICU. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 9 a.m. Participation in March for Babies will provide a memorable and rewarding day for the whole family including a kids’ zone with face painting and balloons, a DJ, bounce houses, carnival games, refreshments, aerobics, contests, and local mascots. To register for the free event, visit www.marchforbabies.org. Funds raised by March for Babies in Tennessee help support prenatal wellness programs, research grants, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) family support programs, and advocacy efforts for stronger, healthier babies. The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today is premature birth. The March of Dimes is committed to preventing it by funding research to find the answers to problems that continue to threaten the health of babies.
• Each week in Tennessee, 240 babies are born prematurely or 1 in 8, which is the equivalent to 11 kindergarten classes. • Memphis has the highest rate of infant mortality in the U.S. • Nationally, 1 in 9 babies are born prematurely. • Every week in Tennessee, 14 babies die before reaching their first birthday. • In 2015, Tennessee earned a grade of “D” from its premature birth rate of 12.5%. • Nationally, more than 500,000 babies are born prematurely and 120,000 babies are born with a birth defect each year. • Birth defects have been the leading cause of infant mortality for the past 20 years, accounting for 1 in 5 infant deaths. To donate, visit www.marchofdimes.com/tennessee, or call (901) 800-0346 to help give babies a fighting chance. The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies®, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Early research led to the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines that all babies still receive.

Church Health Center Hosts Third Annual Walking As One On April 23
10
Walking As One is a community walk, fundraiser, and celebration designed to empower people, organizations, and congregations to live a healthy life. The event will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Church Health Center Wellness, 1115 Union Ave. Participants will enjoy live music and activities, including a 1.5 mile walk, that are focused on the Center’s Model for Healthy Living. The Church Health Center is a faith-based organization that provides healthcare to the working uninsured, as well as whole-health and preventive programming to the Memphis area. The Church Health Center’s Model for Healthy Living illustrates how the seven key dimensions of our body-and-spirit experience — faith, work, nutrition, movement, family and friends, emotions and medical health
— overlap at the core of our lives. All these factors contribute to a life filled with more joy, more love, and more connection with God. “At the Church Health Center, we feel healthcare is more than just prescribing pills. It’s about teaching people how to live healthy, joy-filled lives,” said CEO Dr. Scott Morris. “Living healthy lives doesn’t just mean seeing the doctor regularly. It means all aspects of life are balanced.” Registration is $15, but free to members of Church Health Center Wellness. Children are also free. Fundraising opportunities for churches, businesses and individuals are available. For more information and to register visit walkingasone.org or contact carolanm@churchhealthcenter.org.

Curb Market Hits Midtown The new Curb Market is giving life to the old Easy Way location at 596 S. Cooper Street in between Muddy’s Bake Shop and Otherlands Coffee Bar. The store is creating an opportunity for our local farmers and artisans to sell their products year-round, which translates into more sales and more money that stays in our community. COACH’S CORNER
EAT TO PLAY
Remember as a child, making certain that you were able to play outside between school and dinner? You didn’t worry about what you ate before and you didn’t focus on rewarding yourself with food afterwards. You just played hard, ate dinner, and went to bed. The good old days, right? Adulthood might not be quite as simple but the concept should still be the same. For most it looks more like grabbing a quick run before work in the morning, or squeezing in a track workout between work and dinner, or perhaps a fast paced walk around the parking lot while waiting on a child to finish practice or lessons. While working out is good for physical and mental health, often planning meals and snacks to fuel an active lifestyle can add unneeded stress and therefore negate the positive aspects.
HEALTH+FITNESS | April 2016
For some, it’s overwhelming. You have read the latest research or picked up an article that gives equations on how to calculate exactly the right number of calories and protein in your day. Our society now relies on electronic gadgets to lead us through our day and monitor our every step and bite taken. And honestly, that too can be mind-numbing.
14
If you are the type that focuses on the numbers, you may notice that exercising often burns fewer calories than we think and “nutrition” products are often high calorie indulgences. For example, you burn about 100 calories for every mile you walk or run. Yet the average energy bar provides 250 calories and a 16 ounce fruit smoothie can easily top 400 calories. Playing the numbers game takes the fun out of working out. Instead, try to shift your focus away from the numbers. They can be a good reference point but so can your body. Go back to enjoying your workout and incorporating a balanced amount of food in your diet throughout the day.
Do you have questions about getting started or finding a plan to work for you? Stop in and talk to anyone on our staff. We’ll be happy to help!
by Feb Boswell
Here are a few tips to help fuel your workout and refuel afterwards:
PRE-WORKOUT Concentrate more on hydration. Food should be light (think 100 calories or less) and mainly carbohydrates. Examples include fruits, pretzels, fig bars, energy gels, rice cakes, a small granola bar, or a sports drink.
POST-WORKOUT It’s best to include both carbohydrates and proteins in a ratio of 3:1. This is true whether you are grabbing a snack or ready to eat a meal. If you are unable to eat a meal right away, replenish with an 8 ounce glass of milk, a serving of greek yogurt, or string cheese and crackers.
MEAL SIZE Meal size should be determined by hunger. Listen to your body. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. You might be satisfied with a hard boiled egg, slice of toast, and a piece of fruit. Or perhaps a tortilla wrap with hummus and veggies.
DON’T REWARD WITH FOOD Don’t reward your efforts with food. Make sure your exercise and nutrition goals are enjoyable and bring you satisfaction. Try not to frame them like a list of chores.
ENJOY THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL BENEFITS OF “PLAYING” AGAIN.

NUTRITION
Intuitive Eating:
Being Mindful With Our Health
by Leslie Carr
Intuitive Eating is a nutrition philosophy based on the premise that becoming more attuned to the body’s natural hunger signals is a more effective way to attain a healthy weight rather than counting calories, fat, and carbs. Dieting is a short term strategy that involves depriving ourselves of nutrition and the healthy pleasures of eating. I frequently remind my clients that “food is fuel.” Learning to enjoy food is part of recovering from an unhealthy relationship with it. Paying attention to what we eat while we eat it is a simple mindfulness practice—savor the flavor. Here are ten golden tips from the book Intuitive Eating that can help women and men who struggle with food.
Intuitive Eating Principles 1 2 3
HEALTH+FITNESS | April 2016
4
16
5
Reject the Diet Mentality: Avoid fad diets that cause you to feel like a failure. Most often they stop working and you gained back the initial weight.
6
Honor Your Hunger: Keep your body fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Learning to listen to your body and recognize hunger cues lays a foundation of trust within your system.
7
Make Peace with Food: Make peace with your body. It is okay to eat! Excessive food rules set you up for failure. If you tell yourself that you can’t or shouldn’t have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and bingeing.
Challenge the Food Police: Say NO to the old paradigm that says you’re “good” for restricting calories or “bad” because you ate bread. It’s important to start challenging these unhelpful beliefs.
Respect Your Fullness: Listen to your body. Observe the signs that express hunger and those that tell you you’re comfortably full. Learn to trust your body.
8 9 10
Discover the Satisfaction Factor: The Japanese promote pleasure as one of their goals of healthy eating. However, we often overlook the sensory pleasure of a good meal. When you eat what you really want, you will be less prone to overeat.
Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food: Find ways to comfort, nurture, distract, and resolve your issues without using food. Everyone experiences their own triggers for anxiety, irritation, and loneliness. Restricting your food intake or binging will only make you feel worse.
Respect Your Body: People come in all shapes and sizes. Most people criticize some aspect of how they look. This doesn’t make it okay; it just shows us that we aren’t alone.
Exercise – Feel the Difference: Shift your focus from burning calories to how it feels to move your body. This is another way of listening to yourself. Practice yoga and other types of mindful movement.
Honor Your Health with Gentle Nutrition: Remember that you don’t have to eat a perfect diet to be healthy. Being overly fixated on weight gain from one meal or dessert is a waste of time—and unnecessary. It’s what you eat consistently over time that matters.

The fun of life is to get caught up in living—working hard, taking care of a family, and enjoying friends. The momentum carries us, sometimes too far, and we lose sight of our what’s really important: our health. It’s the backbone of what enables us to lead a successful career and be there for the people who need us. Janeen Gordon has been a busy career woman for the past 20 years. She’s a well known personality as WMC Action News 5’s morning and afternoon traffic anchor. In 2015, she started seeing the effects of her rigorous schedule. “I knew something was wrong for a long time, but I didn’t want to take the time off work,” she says. She was suffering from fatigue and her body put on weight that she just couldn’t lose. One morning she woke up with a tingling sensation in her arm and a bulge in her throat. Janeen finally made an appointment with her doctor, who ran a blood test. The results showed there was an issue with her thyroid. She was referred to a specialist for more tests. She learned that she had an enlarged thyroid that could be cancerous. Janeen scheduled her thyroidectomy in October last year. The surgery was a success and there were no complications, but two weeks into her recovery, Janeen encountered another medical issue for which her doctors had no explanation.
“The most important thing is to slow down and listen to your body.”
HEALTH+FITNESS | April 2016
“I woke up one morning and couldn’t say a word.” Her condition persisted more than just a few days. “Every time I went back to my doctor he scratched his head a little more,” she says. There was no paralysis to the vocal chords or damage of any kind; she simply couldn’t speak. For the past 25 years, Janeen had made her living with her voice on radio and television, so she felt frustrated and powerless. “When you wake up one day and you don’t have a voice, fear starts to set in.”
18
Her condition lasted over three months. While off the air, Janeen refocused her energy into making changes in her life. She started with her diet by adding in more fruits and vegetables, cutting out fried foods, and drinking a gallon of water each day. “I cook now, which is surprising. I actually use my stove and oven and use the microwave less. I’ve completely changed the way I eat,” she says. Although you can still catch her at one of her local favorites like Side Street Grill or Broadway Pizza. Janeen also got active with Bikram Yoga and Infernal Pilates. Janeen enjoys challenging herself and would like to run a half marathon in the future as well as travel more and do some exploring. Looking back on her situation she says, “I had a lot of time to myself— a lot of quiet moments. It was an opportunity to see what really matters. It turned out to be a great experience and I wouldn’t change anything about the process.” She adds, “I came out a stronger person. I get up every morning and I’m not fatigued; I get up every morning and I smile.” Janeen wants her experience serves an example to all of us who have been putting something off. “I could have nipped this in the bud over a year ago, but I didn’t. I waited too long,” she says. “We’re all busy, but the most important thing is to slow down and listen to your body. If you don’t, your body will slow you down.”

NATURAL ALLERGY RELIEF
by Robin Beaudoin
Memphis has had a historically brief winter and swaying spring temperatures are leading us into a harsh allergy season. There are many conventional treatments such as immunotherapy shots, over-the-counter antihistamines, and steroid nasal sprays. These are not always 100% effective and may require rotating them in and out to continue seeing results. However, finding relief from allergy symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean a visit to the pharmacy. Try these safe, drug-free treatments that can help prevent or offer relief from seasonal allergy symptoms.
AVOID ALLERGY TRIGGERS
POLLEN POWER
If you’re sensitive to grasses or other plants, take precautions when doing lawn work. Go as long as possible between cuttings and wear a mask, gloves, and protective eyewear to limit contact with allergens. Wash skin thoroughly immediately afterward.
Choose bee pollen over local honey to build up immunity to allergies. The amount of honey required to build up an immunity means ingesting a large amount of excess sugar. Local bee pollen is more potent and contains a negligible amount of calories. Mix 0.5-1 tsp in a glass of water. Bee pollen can be found at natural food stores and is best stored in the refrigerator to preserve potency.
BREATHE DEEP WITH PEPPERMINT Steam is a great tool to open your sinuses and is even more powerful with a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Steam your face with a towel over your head or place a few drops in a diffuser or humidifier to help unclog a stuffy nose. Peppermint oil helps the mind snap back from an allergy fog. Rub a drop into your temples if you feel an energy dip at work or school.
HEALTH+FITNESS | April 2016
HIT THE SHOWER
28
Pollen inevitably collects in your hair and clothing after time spent outdoors. Showering when you come inside and before your head hits the pillow will prevent that pollen from transferring to your eyes and nose.
UNFILTERED APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Add a teaspoon to a small glass of water one to two times per day for an anti-inflammatory response in the sinus cavity. Any more than the recommended dose may strain kidneys and damage tooth enamel. Limited research has been done on this remedy, but it has been a widely used homeopathic standby for centuries. Antibacterial, probiotic apple cider vinegar can be used safely without side effects alongside conventional medication.
FLUSH AWAY POLLEN Irrigating the nose with saline solution can help soothe upper respiratory allergies by removing irritants (pollen, dust, dander, smoke) that become embedded in the sinuses. Brands such as Neilmed sell packets of saline solution to use with a neti pot or nasal bulb sinus rinse. It’s easiest to do in the shower when steam opens your sinuses.
PAMPER YOUR PET Brush pets outside to keeping dust and dander out of your living space and bathe them often!
POLLEN PROOF YOUR HOME Keep windows and doors closed to prevent pollen and air pollution from coming inside. Wash your pillowcases frequently and clean or replace the air filter in your HVAC system.

FIT RECIPE
Naked Greens with Spiralized Apple and Salmon
by Margaret Molteni
A great way to enjoy the first greens of spring is to forego a dressing and make a salad with simple, healthy ingredients that celebrate the natural delicious flavors of the season. The trick is to pile it high with enough cohesive flavors and exciting textures so that pouring on a high calorie dressing doesn’t even come to mind.
Ingredients: q 1 salmon filet q 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil q S alt and pepper to taste q ¼ tsp parsley q 1 golden delicious apple q 2 cups arugula q 1 /2 avocado q 1 Tbsp goat cheese
Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 425F. 2. S eason the salmon filet with 1 tsp olive oil, salt, pepper, and parsley. Bake for 15 minutes. 3. W hile the salmon is in the oven, spiralize the apples. If you don’t have a spiralizer or similar tool, cut them into thin strips. 4. A ssemble your salad by plating the arugula.

5. D ice your avocado and toss it on the lettuce with crumbled goat cheese.

6. W hen the salmon is done, place it on top of the bed of greens and top it with your spiraled apple. 7. O ptional: Add 1 Tbsp of olive oil and 1 Tbsp of red wine vinegar.

Baked salmon over a bed of peppery arugula, sprinkled with creamy goat cheese and fresh avocado, topped with a crisp spiralized apple makes for a perfectly balanced combination of both flavor and texture that will change the way you do spring salads.
